Pho Combination with Chicken Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls
Ivan C.

Charlottesville happens to lack a lot of Vietnamese restaurants so it was a pleasant surprise to find this place (also because I LOVE the Pho!). Food: A- I really enjoyed their pho noodles here. It was al dente and still soft enough to be quickly engulfed into my stomach. The noodles weren't too soft and each bite needed a bit of chewing (just the way I like it) and didn't just disintegrate in my mouth. The egg rolls were crispy and crunchy and had a perfect balance of flavor and substance inside. The spring rolls were also a great vegan option and with the peanut sauce on the side made the whole experience better. The food came quickly; from door to table to food coming out was literally like 5 minutes (albeit I went at an odd time ~around 3pm). Staff: A No issues whatsoever. They were cordial and extremely quick with orders. The orders were input as if instantly and food was delivered very quickly. Parking: B+ This restaurant is located in a small plaza area so there is decent amount of parking. I was lucky to find parking literally right in front of the restaurant. Price: C It does seem a little bit on the pricey end. Thai tea was $5 and the rolls were around $5.50 each. The large pho Combination I got was $15.95. So the bill was higher than expected, but the taste made it worth it in my opinion. Overall: A- Just had a great first experience and will absolutely come again. This is my pho spot in Charlottesville!

Pho 3 Pho may be the better "Vietnamese" restaurant of the two in Charlottesville, but its flavors are not authentic at all. My husband and I had two of the Dry Vermicelli bowls, and while they are so neatly plated in the takeout box, the grilled chicken and pork did not taste like they should taste. We grew up eating Vietnamese foods, and this did not cut it for us. What was even worse is that I got food poisoning from my chicken. I had a low grade fever for the first night, and suffered abdominal pains for three nights. We did not have any pho so can't really speak on that.

B4: Bun Ga Nuong - lots of flavor and a colorful dish! The chicken was grilled just right and the veggies were crisp. Very tasty!

An awesome meal for the price but admittedly, I feel a bit jipped with the Thai tea. I feel like I got good bang for my buck as far as the main entree was concerned - no skimping on the chicken, all the veggies were crisp, and everything tasted awesome. What's confusing is that I don't feel like I got the same value from the Thai tea. I feel like after a few sips, I was done - and that was well before I received my entree. Tons of ice left, though. If I come back, I'll probably stick to something with refills (and at half the price?). The server was courteous and came back to confirm my order to ensure accuracy. I think I misspoke the entree number initially, but I'm glad everything came out OK in the end. I thought we ordered pork spring rolls but we got chicken. I'm honestly not sure if that was on us or not but, despite wanting pork, the spring rolls we got were tasty. Very nice, thick peanut sauce, too! Overall, I thought it was a good dining experience.

People have warned me against the Vietnamese food in Charlottesville for years, but my cravings kicked in and I came and got myself of pho. First off, the price is high for a bowl of pho compared to other Vietnamese places. As for the broth, it was decent; nothing spectacular and it's not as flavorful as I would want it but it's good enough --less than mediocre. The meat was severely lacking in flavor, quality, and quantity. This restaurant satisfied my cravings, but I wish the broth and meat quality was better because there is so much potential. I would come again to satisfy my cravings, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Came on a Friday at lunch but the poor place was deserted. Was greeted and sat right away and I ordered pho ga with chicken and without onions. It came out within 5 minutes and the side plate with the basil, bean sprouts , lime and jalapeño looked sad. The bean sprouts were soggy and not fresh as was the basil discolored darkly from going bad. The plate also had a rolled up straw wrapper on it that blended in. I wouldn't have thought twice that it was mine but my straw wrapper was sitting next to me already. Makes me think they gave me a side dish someone else didn't eat from earlier. Ugh.... Anyways, I let them know and received a fresh side plate right away that looked and tasted better. Note to this establishment- please look at what you're serving before you serve it and throw away what someone doesn't finish. I never would have thought it was served to someone else beforehand if it didn't have a folded up straw wrapper (same white as plate) on it. Lastly, the chicken was very chewy and also did not taste fresh. I'm sad that this is the first and last time I'll be coming here. Plenty of parking out front too and wheelchair accessible. The ambiance was nice but time to take the Christmas decor down! You have a choice on high tops, lower tables and booths. 8 large screen tvs above a big bar so maybe they have a nightlife/game day crowd here. I tipped well just the same but the servers should be looking at what they are serving too. Should have got a pic of the first plate but hopefully, a lesson learned for all. Was really looking forward to some good Pho!

Pretty good spot for Vietnamese food! Can't speak on if it's authentic or not, I'm admittedly not well versed in Vietnamese food and there's not much in Charlottesville, but the portions were giant and the food was fresh. There was a lot of cilantro in both entrees which (again Im no Vietnamese food buff) I would assume is normal, but if you're sensitive to cilantro it'll probably be in there or at least a garnish. Food was great, the noodle soup was definitely the winner. Thai tea was kind of a rip off, it's definitely more bland than most other spots in cville and more ice than tea. Portion sizes for the food made up for it I was shocked how big the bowls were. Very clean inside the restaurant and the server was fast and polite.

Service was good. The Pho was just meh. Not bad, but not good enough that I'd venture out specifically to eat it again.

A great place for pho. I wish the place served hot tea to wash down pho, but the place does not. That is why I took a star down from 5.

Very very nice lady (owner) and very helpful with the menu. - I had the chicken Pho ($16.50). I added the 2 included Hoisin sauce packets. It also came with a Sriracha sauce packet and a small container of chili oil along with the normal variety of noodles, sprouts, fresh herbs, green onions, white onions, jalapeño slices, and a lime wedge. The chicken was tender sliced white meat with no fat, gristle, or bones attached. The broth had a lot of flavor and was delicious. - I also had the shrimp and chive dumplings ($7.00). Not a strong shrimp flavor, but they had a nice crisp on the outside and were tasty. The sauce that comes with the dumplings is absolutely delicious. - My wife had the Bulgogi beef ($14.50). She said it was tender and very delicious. It came with rice, kimchi, and cucumber salad. I just happened to speak to Linh about the cucumber salad and she said this is how she's always made it for her kids and they love it. Well, I'm with her kids and love it too. She makes the vinaigrette herself and it has an unexpected sweetness to it instead of the usual strong vinegar flavor. We both loved it. - We had the pork gyoza ($7.00). This was cooked my favorite way, deep fried (not pan fried). This took me back to the gyoza in Japan and the Yaki Mandu I used to get in Korea. Great crispy wrapper with a tender flavorful filling. And again, the sauce that came with it is some of the best I've had. - The kimchi is not overly spicy and has a slight sweetness to it. - The Egg Tarts ($5.50) are good, not overly sweet. Could use a bit more filling for a better filling to pie crust ratio. - I also got a Chai tea bubble milk ($6.25) that was super delicious. Overall, we really enjoyed Nguyen's Kitchen and will go back with friends. It's unfortunate that it sits behind a Taco Bell and is not highly noticeable from the road, otherwise I might have tried it sooner.

As is often the case on this arcade, the restaurant also has a dedicated set of outdoor seats at the middle of the brick walkway. You'd think all of this would be an upgrade, but no. First, I ordered in advance online to spare myself a wait, not knowing that it was an actual sit-down restaurant. However, upon arriving at the space, there was no one to take an order if I'd wanted to place one, and only rarely did anyone emerge from the back with food. I just took a seat and waited. By the time someone acknowledges my presence after some fifteen or twenty minutes, my food was apparently already ready and just sitting there. I didn't leave a tip as my impression of this place was that they weren't really providing any service. There's nothing wrong with a counter service model rather than full table service, but one way or another they seem not to have figured out what they were doing. Other potential diners also seemed confused. Don't get me wrong, the good was great. My ginger lemongrass noodle soup delivered an explosion of flavors. Would order again. I just hope they improve the customer service experience, because this is a great opportunity for the average local to try some vegetarian Vietnamese food.

I ordered takeout, and a smooth process had been implemented allowing me to quickly grab it. I liked that their online ordering system had a lot of checkboxes to customize things, but was nonplussed when I pulled out my vegetable soup with the "no cauliflower" option (which they clearly wrote on the container to remind themselves) but which did in fact have a bunch of broccoli and cauliflower that imbued the soup with a sulfurous foulness that I was hoping to avoid. Setting that aside, the rest of my food was quite good. Oddly, their curries are more vegetarian-friendly than some of their stir-fry dishes. I ordered my green curry Thai hot, and they delivered a ferocious dish with no questions asked, and a small sachet of extra dried chili that I didn't need to use for this and so saved for other food. The curry with some aromatic Jasmine rice hit the spot. Some vegetable rolls with very fine noodle threads made for a good snack later. I could certainly see coming back, ordering something different, and getting high quality food.

Server (Brianna) started out good, fairly attentive until I got my food. After I got my food I got one cursory "all good?" and that was it until I got the bill. Anyway, on to the food: ordered two meat plate (brisket and pulled pork) with fries and coles slaw. Fries were the highlight of the meal. Hot, crispy, seasoned...awesome. Cole slaw was good....but it was super tangy (vinegary) for my taste. Don't get it wrong, it was good, just hard to eat all of it thanks to the tang. On to the meat. Got a pretty good sized pile of pulled pork and a couple slices of brisket. Both meats were lukewarm at best. Pork was dry (thank goodness for the NC vinegar sauce). The brisket made up for the porks dryness, it was extra greasy and extra fatty. Like, for real, do you think people are going to eat the fat layer between the lean point meat and the fatty upper meat? Yeah, not me. But since the brisket was also lukewarm (more like lukecold) it really didn't make a difference. I did think the Vision BBQ sauce tasted pretty good. If Brianna would have come back by after I got my meal I would have sent it back....and probably would have just left without worrying over a replacement, or a comp, or anything. Secondary issue: went to the mens room. It was just nasty. You get once shot to make an impression, and this one was not good. Would not/will not repeat.
