Philly Phlava tries to bring a cheesesteak to Tampa. They mostly bring a decent version of this Philadelphia staple to Tampa, however it pales in comparison to what you would get in the City of Brotherly Love. But to capture the advice Dorothy had in "The Wizard of Oz," we certainly are not in Philadelphia. If you are seeking a true cheesesteak (just a tip from someone who lived in Philadelphia, please do not call a cheesesteak a "Philly." It is what we call a city, not a sandwich) you won't find it here. However, it is a reasonable facsimile, though a bit on the high price side. I was on the fence about giving it three or four stars. I ended going with four stars more out of kindness than anything else. It might be a bit better than other places, especially for here in Florida, but I woukd not say that it was anything truly wonderful. If you want a cheesesteak, I guess you could do worse. read more

I'm a South Philly transplant on the hunt for the best Cheesesteak in Tampa Bay and found this place here on Yelp. The place is tiny with just a few tables. But, t looks like they are doing a huge takeout business. I ordered a Cheesesteak with Fried Onions and American Cheese ($8.95) they use Ribeye and it's a decent portion for the size of the roll. The Onions were nicely cooked with a good amount of cheese. The meat was nicely seasoned but a bit chunky. I also ordered a side of Onion Rings ($3.95) it was a nice size order, crispy, plenty hot and not greasy. Their O Ring Sauce was really nice and had a good bite to it! Overall one of the better Cheesesteaks I've had in the Tampa Bay Area. I'll be back, there are a bunch of things on the menu that look really good. read more

I came in on a Friday afternoon at lunchtime by myself. The place was moderately busy, but I was able to find a table without talking up to much space. The restaurant was clean and pleasant, except for the Philly sports teams memorabilia scattered throughout...Being a lifelong Buccaneers fan, I can do without that. I ordered the half steak and cheese with mushrooms and onions. Yes, they have wit Whiz, but I opted for the provolone. I've had both Pats and Ginos. I can say that Philly Phlava tastes like neither. If your from Philly, you'd probably say that is a good thing! I made my meal a combo, choosing some Herr's Sour Cream and Onion chips over the fries. I was in and out as fast as I need to be. First timer! I've heard good thing about this spot so I decided to check it out for dinner recently. This is a small spot but has a few tables and seating available. I ordered a Buffalo chicken hoagie with bay fries (old bay seasoned). Everything was made to order so hot and fresh when it came out. My hoagie was stuffed with nicely sauced chicken with plenty of mix ins such as onions, peppers and lettuce. The fries were fried to perfection and well seasoned. Why 3 stars? Because this is another solid lunch option in my neighborhood. --- --- --- I was recently sitting at a light at Fletcher and Dale Mabry, when I looked over and starred at Philly Phlava. I knew it was there, but it was one of those weird moments where it suddenly just hit me that I'd never been there and I wasn't really sure why. I looked it up on Yelp to see it carried a 4-star rating and I was pretty much mentally committing to visiting during the upcoming weekend. I floated it by the wife and she had a similar reaction, so off we went. It's a small shop with only a few tables, but we ordered ours to go. We both custom built our cheesesteaks - I added steak, mozzarella, provolone, peppers, onions, mushrooms, oil, vinegar and mayo. I also ordered the garbage fries, which is basically their code for "fully loaded cheese fries." I definitely didn't dislike mine, but I wasn't blown away either. The garbage fries were the highlight of the meal, for me. My wife was pleasantly surprised with her chicken based sandwich, for what that's worth. But for me, I think it honestly landed right about where my expectations were. With that being said, the menu is pretty expansive, so I will happily try something else on a future visit, as it's just too close to home to not check them out again. read more

WARNING! During my visit, I witnessed that staff of this store are not practicing the COVID-19 safety guidelines put in place. They are putting together cold cut sandwiches without fully covering their faces. See attached photos. There were 4 staff members working and 2 of the younger ones PREPARING THE FOOD were not covering their nose. By doing this they are risking health of patrons in the store as well as the cold-cut food they are preparing. They are also putting their own other 2 co-workers at risk. Such blatant negligence to guidelines is very hard to witness and observe. I threw away my cold cut sandwiches that I got via carry out. I'm not going back here again. This visit to Philly Plava was prompted by our trip to Philly a few months ago. Typically a Philly cheese steak wouldn't necessarily excite me but after our food adventures in Philly my mind is forever changed. The prices here are good. The usual suspects are on the menu but they also offer Italian subs too. Skip the wings, although they were cooked nicely there was no flavor whats so ever on the hot garlic. The garbage fries were great. Real bacon, jalapenos, whiz. Do you like your Philly wit or witout? I can tell you I like mine wit cheese whiz, chopped onions and hot cherry peppers. Philly Plava does a good rendition. The meat is chopped very finely. Could use a bit more whiz bit overall very good. My son loved his hot Italian too. He gave it a 9 out of 10. Overall for 3 or dinner was $40. No bad when we had 3 meals and wings. I will definately revist. read more

Everything was just alright. Skimpy on cheese, you can't even see it on the Philly. Online ordering is weird and not user friendly. You are forced to modify certain items for a charge when they don't need to be modified. And then they don't come out as advertised on the menu bc you had to modify just to send it through. This place was pretty good. Very fast order. I walked in and did a to go order on Friday. I had my food in about 7 minutes. They are a bit pricey. $20 for 2 sandwiches with no drinks or sides. The bread is really good. I got the chicken philly and it did have a bone in it. My boyfriend was really excited that they have cheese whiz and he wished there would have been more on his steak philly. So, walking in to Philly Phlava, I thought, "I dont know if they have anything I can eat". Well, they DO and I can! Their Chicken Philly was more than I expected! I ordered it with mushrooms, green peppers and sauteed onion. SO GOOD! Served on Amorosso bread, which is shipped from Philadelphia, the sandwich has a delicious taste all its' own. It' s foot-long sandwich stuffed with all the afore-mentioned ingredients. I was certain I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, but before I knew it I was staring at an empty sandwich container. Even if you're not from Philly, do yourself a favor---stop in and enjoy one of their delicious sandwiches on that "Straight from Philly" Amorosso bread. But, be sure to save one for me. read more

If you love authentic Philly's with great customer service, enjoy this story: Someone in my office had an order scheduled for the following Monday and the delivery man brought it a week early. When we told him it was the wrong day, he seemed confused and left. We weren't going to take it. Because it was a mistake. It's for a specific occasion why would we want to steal one sandwich? It isn't the Mona Lisa. So after the delivery man left, my coworker just handed out the sandwich to all of us, which we ate. What else do you do. The delivery guy comes back and says "I need the sandwich." Now, let's pause here. If you knew that this was the policy to bring the sandwich back, you shouldn't have left. 100% your fault. Also, the people who ate it didn't even know. They just thought they were given a free sandwich by this coworker. Anyway, so he says "I can't go back without a sandwich." yatta yatta. Spoiler alert. He went back without a sandwich. My coworker tried calling all week to make sure the sandwich would be delivered on the right day, because it was their mistake. "You'll have to talk to the owner". Day after day. FINALLY the owner calls. He's like "you can't have a sandwich on Monday because you ate that one." And after some arguing he caves and says "fine it'll come Monday." My coworker says "I'm a little concerned with how you're acting that you're going to spit in it or something." And he erupts "How dare you question my reputation" etc etc. Notice the quotations. That's how you know I'm not making this up. So all to say, we, as a business, won't be going here anymore. The customer service was absolutely laughable. Act like a grown up and a professional. Grew up in Philly area and have been called a "Cheesesteak Snob" and I LOVE that Philly Phlava is making REAL Philly cheesesteaks right here in Tampa! They use the Amoroso rolls, they offer the only two cheeses acceptable for a Philly cheesesteak (Provolone and Whiz), and you can hear the metal spatulas chopping and tossing the thinly sliced ribeye on the charred flattop grill. For just a few minutes, I was HOME. If you're from Philly and you left the area you know what I'm talking about. Places put "Philly cheesesteak" on their menu all the time and it's just a lie. If there's no flattop grill it's not a Philly cheesesteak. If it's not on an Amoroso roll it's not a Philly cheesesteak. This place gets it, 5 stars! read more

My boyfriend order a cheesesteak with mushrooms, lettuce, onions and cherry peppers with provolone cheese. I got a cheesesteak with lettuce and pickles with cheese wiz. I normally avoid anything that's not chicken but I'm a sucker for a Philly cheesesteak. So I just had to try it. We ordered online and our food was done in 20 minutes. Literally perfect! My son and I ordered Steak and Cheese Subs from this place and the name says it's all. It was one of the best steak and cheese subs I've ever had. The bread was melt in your mouth soft and the steak and cheese was loaded with flavor and tender you barely had to chew it.
