Hungry and moreover,…read morein the mood for a nightcap; finding nothing else open for business, we piled into this place, expecting nothing at all. It's a bowling alley bar, in far North central Wisconsin. No frills, no atmosphere, and swelling with the sad vibes of being some of the onliest people in the place besides the staff VERY close to closing time. We had just played a sold-out show at a wonderful Arts Center in Minocqua, so we were not bereft of self-esteem, we were just hungry and thirsty. Well. Cocktails first-being in Wisco, I had to order a Brandy Old Fashioned. It came in a generous plastic cup, the same size as my wife's Diet Coke. It was well-made. Goal #1 achieved. We learned, gratefully, the kitchen was "still open" The menu was a bit surprising. It didn't look like a typical "Bowling Alley Bar" menu. I ordered a "Patty Melt"-not my usual order, but the menu claimed it would come on rye bread with Wisco Cheese. Wife ordered Burger and Fries, and our pal Max ordered "Shrimp"--thinking it would be the typical frozen crap one would expect at a bowling alley bar near midnight. Well. The "Melt" and Burger were delicious, the Fries were excellent, and the Shrimp were nicely steamed and very fresh. WHAAAAAAAA? I was sober, folks. and not THAT hungry to mistake mediocre for anything else. Somebody had some pride in that kitchen. Although they locked the doors, they didn't throw us out. A cocktail or two more and a fine nightcap was had by all. Kudos to Morgan the Bartender, who appeared like a droll Gen Z'er, but turned out to be most pleasant. We were encouraged to see her doing cleanup most enthusiastically--told us a lot about why the experience there was so enjoyable. They care...You find that a lot in Wisconsin Restaurants.

Though it was my first time there, I kinda got the vibe that the regulars are treated really well and the rest...well, not sure. The place seemed clean and we ordered these huge mason jars drinks that are about $5 each....basically every flavor of Long Island you can think of. Overall, I'd say it's a great place if you're hanging out in the area. I didn't get a chance to check out much of their menu, but we took one of their BLT pizzas home and what a disappointment when we found they put ham on our Bacon-Lettuce-Tomato Pizza. It was still pretty, good but nothing I'd go back for, reminded me so much of a digorno's crust.

We were told the kitchen had closed early, which honestly wasn't a huge deal--we understood and decided to stay and have drinks anyway. What was frustrating was that by 9:30 PM, while all 8 of us were still there drinking and spending money, the staff started making comments about how they were closing and we could only get one more drink. If you advertise that your bar is open until 11 PM(sign outside even says bowling is open until 11), customers shouldn't be made to feel unwelcome an hour and a half before closing, especially when you have a group of paying customers. Also minimum of 8 more people came in and got turned away for a drink. I completely understand closing early if business is dead, but when you have 8 people sitting there actively ordering drinks, it's pretty disappointing to feel like you're an inconvenience. We would have happily stayed, continued ordering, and tipped well. Unfortunately, the experience made us feel like our business wasn't wanted.

I was definitely cheering for the pack once I found this out. They also had very cheap $5 pitchers. This made for a fun night...especially considering our assumption was how are we going to have fun at little bars in middle of nowhere wisconsin. We never ended up bowling though... the bar was too much fun with the game on. The crowd was a mixed bunch...from camo wearing outdoorsmen to rich Chicago suburbanites. Everyone was into the game and having a great time though (probably cause of the free shots). They also have some pretty good food here...MASSIVE quesadillas in particular! I had the pulled pork with the fresh cut fries. The pulled pork was dry but it did have good flavor. I like the fact they give you the BBQ sauce on the side and you have the option of spicy or regular. I opted for the spicy and its not really spicy but did have a good flavor. I like to dip on the side and dont like it drenched on top. If the pulled pork wasnt so dry I would not have even put the sauce on. It came on pretty big size bun but would have been nice if it was toasted or not so dry. I would say there was a nice quantity of meat on the bun and they didnt skimp on that. The fresh cut fries were good and not limp like some places do. They did not salt them so you had to yourself. My friend had the soup and salad bar which was part of their lunch special so not sure if they have it up all the time or just during lunch and that was $5.99. My mom had the chicken quesadilla and she said the flavor of the chicken was very bland and not very much meat on it. It did however look good. Came with lettuce, tomato on top and sour cream. She said if she returned there she would not order that again. The place was clean and the service was fine. Nothing above average by any means. I would go back if I was in the area as they seemed to have a nice variety on the menu from wraps, burgers, pizzas, apps and several diffrent kinds of sandwhiches.

So it was starting off good but we decided to still give it a try, but we should have stayed at the cabin. The bowling situation was a complete mess. No organization and no list of those waiting for lanes. Felt chaotic and stressful. The workers also had a lot of attitude and do not know how to work in the service industry. We got the "well I don't know when a lane will be free so" speech. A family took one of our lanes, even though we were waiting for two lanes first. Pizza was decent, wouldn't recommend the fajita wrap though. The balls were another problem. Very few balls under 10lbs, which makes zero sense. Bowling took longer due to sharing balls between kids and adults. Wasn't able to get pitchers of beer...are you even a bowling alley if you can't get that??? Wouldn't go there again, ever. So much for "up north nice." Not a thing there.
