Rockwood is ideally placed, just off Bold Street and behind FACT. It is a specialist burger…read morerestaurant, serving delicious burgers with a twist. I had the special which was served with pulled pork, a mushroom and peppercorn sauce. My friends really enjoyed the Vegetarian option 'The Green Angel'. The cocktails were on a Sunday to Thursday 2 for £10 offer...I can recommend the 'Tommy Gun Margherita'. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. We had to wait a while to be served but it was busy!

The large party options offered a menu with three choices of starter and main or two different banquets with steaks, wings, Mac and cheese etc. We opted for the large party menu and as requested by the restaurant placed our orders in advance midweek. Normally pre-booking gives me a bit of a headache. I'm indecisive at the best of times when I'm out to eat so having to choose days in advance makes me worry that the notion would have worn off by then. I'd ordered corned beef hash croquettes for my starter and the rump steak with peppercorn sauce and beef dripping cooked chips. And luckily by the time Saturday night came I was really looking forward to having a delicious medium-rare steak! The restaurant is upstairs and is quite small, but they had changed the layout slightly to ensure that our group didn't feel cramped in which was a nice touch. We had a drinks order taken (a very deep, fruity Zinfandel for myself) and then our starters were brought to us quickly after. Three huge, golden brown potato croquettes with a side of crunchy red cabbage slaw were placed in front of me. Was this the starter?! The breadcrumb coating was crisp and coated a fluffy, tangy centre. There was a good balance of flavours, with some spring onion lifting the milder potato and corned beef flavours. In my head I was going to eat two and save room for my steak but they were delicious and I ate all three. Our plates were cleared and the mains were brought out. I immediately regretted polishing off my starter as another huge plate of food faced me. My steak was a perfect medium rare but the peppercorn sauce was full of whole peppercorns and was a little bit too hot for my liking. The onion ring was encased in a light crisp batter but the onion was slightly undercooked. The chips on the other hand were unanimously decided upon as the highlight of everyone's meal. Well seasoned, fluffy, a good bite to the outside and perfectly golden. Just delicious. We were very well taken care of here and they gave us 20% off our first round of drinks in Bar Bodega downstairs too. A really lovely place, with wonderful food and attentive staff. If you're looking for some proper steakhouse style food then Rookwood should be on your go to list.

What a revelation!…read more We had booked a table for a late lunch at 3pm on a Wednesday. From the off this place had class. It has a very apt bistro feel to it. Everything is top quality; from the glassware to the napkins to the toilets - which were incredible - boudoir style, curtain entry, Thomas Crapper pull chain loo, proper towels (!!!), there was even a luxurious corner seat incase you fancied a sit down somewhere else in the room. We ordered the special; rump, chips and a parmesan & black pepper dressed salad. In the short wait we were offered house-baked baguette and butter. The salads arrived - a lovely mix of leaves with generous shavings of parmesan and a creamy peppery dressing. A trough of fries followed (to share between us) and then smoking skillets carrying perfectly cooked steaks. My parents commented on every single brilliant song in the playlist that accompanied our tasty steak meal. Wearing my favourite Fleetwood Mac tshirt, I sat with a mouth full of juicy rump steak and listened to one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac songs. Heaven.

The chef definitely needs to use some Argentinian salt, that would make a world of difference. The lasagna and guacho burger were pretty good, but the sides were just okay. They didn't quite reach the level of a great steakhouse. Overall, it had the potential to be a really great restaurant, but it just didn't quite make the cut. Servers were very friendly.

I really cannot figure this name out. Is it a play on words? It's a play on words that doesn't…read morereally make sense. I know there's lots of meat, thus Argentinian Meat, perhaps 'meet' is a noun in this case? As in short for meeting place? I'm sure I'll ponder that one in the wee small hours whilst attempting to drift into slumber, but meanwhile I'll tell you about the restaurant itself. Business districts are tricky when it comes to food. Take Spinningfields in my home city of Manchester for example. During the evening, the likes of Nando's and Carluccio's are desolate, with the occasional ball of tumbleweed whistling through with the breeze. But by day these places are crammed with suits. It's those after-work hours that are tricky. Argentinian Meet at the bottom of Brunswick Street however has managed to pack them in, conquering the difficult post-5pm slot and having done so since its opening in 2006. But what of the food? The restaurant claims that unlike its owners, all the beef is Argentinian. The staff happen to be Hispanic and South American but we're not eating them, it's just an interesting fact. How about the vino? Only three Argentinians on the list there I'm afraid, and they come with a high price tag. The rest are just your average Pinot Collapsos you'd find in your local pub, nay, Thresher's even. All the dishes here come with a fresh and colourful little side salad which is crispy and refreshing enough to take the edge off the spicy mains and clean the palate, and chimichurri, a traditional Argentinian accompaniment dip. It's nice. If you're veggie you'll be REALLY disappointed. You've been assigned to the rudimentary pesto spaghetti or the Portobello mushroom lasagne with spinach. Hardly Argentinian, really. Still, if you're a pescetarian/vegequarian like me you're in for a little more of a treat with whole lobster, grilled tuna, salmon and cod. The tuna cooked with chilli, garlic and coriander butter is delightfully cooked and melts in the mouth. You might notice a little hit and miss vibe with the old steaks though, the whole reason you'd come to an Argentinian place. They have a habit of tenderising the meat, such as ribeye, and in bashing the bejaysis out of it they also bang away the flavour and the thickness, thus resulting in something stretched and disturbing. Kind of like that guy attached to the fish hooks in Hellraiser. Oh god, I've just put you off tenderised steak forever. Nay mind. The steak here might not be as good as Gaucho Grill, but heck, they do follow orders and cook it to your exact tastes. The ribeye, however Frank from Hellraiser it might be, will be as medium rare, rare or well done as you asked. Simples. Service is good and while you might be privy to a lot of phone calls about Monday meetings and targets and 'but he's not pulling his weight in terms of the Johnson account', the atmosphere's pretty bustling too. And there's even chips. Well whaddya know!

A lovely restaurant in a picturesque village location…read more We're a family of 4 Vegans and we ate at Y Sgwâr yesterday evening. We only booked a few hours in advance of our reservation but as the owner is Vegan herself they were not fazed in the slightest by our dietary requirements and we were given a number of options for each course when we arrived. Starters: We had the tomato tart and soup. Both were lovely and there was a choice of two Vegan soups which came with bread and dairy free spread. Main Course: We had the Thai vegetable green curry with a dhaal side and the pancake. The curry itself and the side of dhaal were great. Both really flavoursome and tasty. The pancake was fantastic and was served as a burrito with mushrooms, spinach, couscous and other delights inside. I had it with rice but you can have chips or rosemary & lemon potatoes instead. Dessert: Not that we had much room for dessert after the excellent starter and main course! We all had the chocolate cake was absolutely wonderful! Moist with lots of tasty chocolate icing on top. Apparently it's always Vegan too. They gave us the option of either whipped soya cream (which we chose) or sorbet to accompany it. There were also lots of Vegan wines marked clearly on the menu. All in all a super meal in a lovely environment, served by great staff. Highly recommended. We will be going back regularly.
