The fizz drink. Definitely a good choice.

I had heard about this chain in Birmingham. I thought it was an upscale steakhouse but I personally would not label it as one. This one is located in the popular Albert Docks. We didn't have reservations but they sat us immediately for a late lunch. First, it felt like they didn't want us in the restaurant. It is pretty big and there were quite a few open tables. Yet they sat us at the closest table to the door. We had a direct view of the bar and kitchen making it frustrating when we saw our cocktails sitting on the bar alone with nobody delivering them. The drinks were on special for £4.95 as it was before 7pm. I had an awesome cocktail called something like Grey Goose Fizz. It was sweet and limey served in a lovely champagne glass. It was so good I had 2! We had two starters, nachos and garlic bread. The nacho chips is what made the dish great. They were like a combo of tortilla chips and pitta bread. Garlic bread was standard. For a main, I had fillet wellington with a side of lobster mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was almost £5 extra and had maybe 2 bites of lobster. Quite a disappointment. The Wellington was tasty but not the best I've ever had. Plus for a "medium" steak it was cooked too long for my taste. This place was expensive and did not leave me with a strong desire to return. I want to give 2.5 stars but can't so I rounded it up. The bathrooms were extremely filthy too which is disappointing for a place marketed so upscale. Perhaps it was just an off day for them.

I had the special which was served with pulled pork, a mushroom and peppercorn sauce. My friends really enjoyed the Vegetarian option 'The Green Angel'. The large party options offered a menu with three choices of starter and main or two different banquets with steaks, wings, Mac and cheese etc. We opted for the large party menu and as requested by the restaurant placed our orders in advance midweek. Normally pre-booking gives me a bit of a headache. I'm indecisive at the best of times when I'm out to eat so having to choose days in advance makes me worry that the notion would have worn off by then. I'd ordered corned beef hash croquettes for my starter and the rump steak with peppercorn sauce and beef dripping cooked chips. And luckily by the time Saturday night came I was really looking forward to having a delicious medium-rare steak! The restaurant is upstairs and is quite small, but they had changed the layout slightly to ensure that our group didn't feel cramped in which was a nice touch. We had a drinks order taken (a very deep, fruity Zinfandel for myself) and then our starters were brought to us quickly after. Three huge, golden brown potato croquettes with a side of crunchy red cabbage slaw were placed in front of me. Was this the starter?! The breadcrumb coating was crisp and coated a fluffy, tangy centre. There was a good balance of flavours, with some spring onion lifting the milder potato and corned beef flavours. In my head I was going to eat two and save room for my steak but they were delicious and I ate all three. Our plates were cleared and the mains were brought out. I immediately regretted polishing off my starter as another huge plate of food faced me. My steak was a perfect medium rare but the peppercorn sauce was full of whole peppercorns and was a little bit too hot for my liking. The onion ring was encased in a light crisp batter but the onion was slightly undercooked. The chips on the other hand were unanimously decided upon as the highlight of everyone's meal. Well seasoned, fluffy, a good bite to the outside and perfectly golden. Just delicious. We were very well taken care of here and they gave us 20% off our first round of drinks in Bar Bodega downstairs too. A really lovely place, with wonderful food and attentive staff. If you're looking for some proper steakhouse style food then Rookwood should be on your go to list.

The chef definitely needs to use some Argentinian salt, that would make a world of difference. The lasagna and guacho burger were pretty good, but the sides were just okay. They didn't quite reach the level of a great steakhouse. Overall, it had the potential to be a really great restaurant, but it just didn't quite make the cut. Servers were very friendly.

I really cannot figure this name out. Is it a play on words? It's a play on words that doesn't…read morereally make sense. I know there's lots of meat, thus Argentinian Meat, perhaps 'meet' is a noun in this case? As in short for meeting place? I'm sure I'll ponder that one in the wee small hours whilst attempting to drift into slumber, but meanwhile I'll tell you about the restaurant itself. Business districts are tricky when it comes to food. Take Spinningfields in my home city of Manchester for example. During the evening, the likes of Nando's and Carluccio's are desolate, with the occasional ball of tumbleweed whistling through with the breeze. But by day these places are crammed with suits. It's those after-work hours that are tricky. Argentinian Meet at the bottom of Brunswick Street however has managed to pack them in, conquering the difficult post-5pm slot and having done so since its opening in 2006. But what of the food? The restaurant claims that unlike its owners, all the beef is Argentinian. The staff happen to be Hispanic and South American but we're not eating them, it's just an interesting fact. How about the vino? Only three Argentinians on the list there I'm afraid, and they come with a high price tag. The rest are just your average Pinot Collapsos you'd find in your local pub, nay, Thresher's even. All the dishes here come with a fresh and colourful little side salad which is crispy and refreshing enough to take the edge off the spicy mains and clean the palate, and chimichurri, a traditional Argentinian accompaniment dip. It's nice. If you're veggie you'll be REALLY disappointed. You've been assigned to the rudimentary pesto spaghetti or the Portobello mushroom lasagne with spinach. Hardly Argentinian, really. Still, if you're a pescetarian/vegequarian like me you're in for a little more of a treat with whole lobster, grilled tuna, salmon and cod. The tuna cooked with chilli, garlic and coriander butter is delightfully cooked and melts in the mouth. You might notice a little hit and miss vibe with the old steaks though, the whole reason you'd come to an Argentinian place. They have a habit of tenderising the meat, such as ribeye, and in bashing the bejaysis out of it they also bang away the flavour and the thickness, thus resulting in something stretched and disturbing. Kind of like that guy attached to the fish hooks in Hellraiser. Oh god, I've just put you off tenderised steak forever. Nay mind. The steak here might not be as good as Gaucho Grill, but heck, they do follow orders and cook it to your exact tastes. The ribeye, however Frank from Hellraiser it might be, will be as medium rare, rare or well done as you asked. Simples. Service is good and while you might be privy to a lot of phone calls about Monday meetings and targets and 'but he's not pulling his weight in terms of the Johnson account', the atmosphere's pretty bustling too. And there's even chips. Well whaddya know!

Wheeler's of St James Liverpool is one of two restaurants owned by Marco Pierre White in the city,…read moreit is one of two "Wheeler's", with the other being in London. After a great experience at the MPW Steakhouse, also in Liverpool, I have wanted to try this place since it first opened recently. The overall feel of Wheeler's is nice, it is inside the new Pullman Hotel in overall it has a nice, modern, new feel to it, with Marco Pierre White inspired decors, such as the "sofa", and various pictures of him and his career around the restaurant. The service here was also very good, the staff were friendly and had a great knowledge of gluten-free, albeit there was no gluten-free menu made available online, but they did have a self-written menu which shows what items could be made gluten-free from the festive menu, examples included the Christmas Turkey dinner, excluding the pigs in blankets and stuffing, or the pumpkin soup which could come with gluten-free bread on request. I ordered three courses from the lunch menu which came to £22, this is a price per person yet it is increased after 5pm to a "dinner" menu at the price of £30, remembering, of course, this price is subject to a 10% service charge so ends up going to £24.20 and £33 respectively. I dislike the idea of service charges, as I feel it should be the customer's choice whether to leave one or not, and it is just adding price to the menu which I can't understand, if they want the prices higher why not charge 10% more rather than adding it at the end? The feel of this place was also nice in the sense that, there was a huge open-kitchen, meaning during lunch service, you can see and smell and even hear the kitchen and the food cooking, from the flames used in the cooking process. The location of this place also is good, it is quite central and within walking distance of the city centre and Liverpool One, as well as being under a mile away from the train station, and part of the ACC Liverpool complex which includes the Echo Arena, Convention Centre and Car parking. Starter: For my starter, I ordered the pumpkin soup with mushrooms and parmesan, this was also made available with gluten-free bread on request, the gluten-free bread was unlike any other bread I've tasted which is gluten-free (GF), It tasted and looked fresh, and it didn't even have any holes in which one normally associates with Gluten-free bread The soup its-self was reasonable quality, however, I found the mushrooms to be a little slimy and the soup on its own didn't taste great, perhaps it was the flavour combination of pumpkin, some parts of the soup, in my opinion, were too thick, hence I had to spit it out, yet still the soup was edible and nice to dip my bread in, but not really for anything more. The choice of starters wasn't fantastic from the festive menu, there was a choice of 4 and the pumpkin soup was one of three which was gluten-free, the other one which contained gluten being the Haddock Chowder, my friend ordered this and appeared to enjoy it, she commented "I rarely eat chowder and the thought of it would normally turn my stomach, but the taste and quality of the fish was good." Main: The best selections for GF were the mains, again I could eat 3/4 items as long as they were modified, the only item which wasn't suitable was the vegetarian option, the pasta. I decided to order Traditional roasted turkey breast and leg, chestnut stuffing, roast parsnip, duck fat potatoes, sprouts, Chantenay carrots, this was made gluten-free by removing the stuffing and "pigs in blankets" which came with it. The quality of the food overall was good, the turkey quality was good and it was seasoned well, however, I only tended to like the bits of turkey breast, the other parts were a little chewy and fatty. The duck-fat potatoes were a good dish, they were flavoured well with the duck-fat, the portions of potatoes were good, but also offering mashed potatoes would have made it better. The carrots were a bit hit and miss for me, on one hand, the flavours were great with the Chantenay, but overall I found them to be a little hard. On the same topic of the veg, the parsnips were decent. Dessert: For my dessert, I had the Chocolate Mousse with Peppermint Marshmallows, made gluten-free by having no Graham Crackers, the mouse very rich, and although fresh and good quality, I feel the mouse could have done with some a flavour such as orange or peppermint inside, rather than just the small layer of marshmallow on the top, which did, however, taste good. My friend ordered the chestnut and white chocolate pannacotta, I also tried this, we found it to be too creamy and it didn't burst out with flavour, it was one panna cotta on a base of white cream. This is briefer than what I would have liked due to 5000 character limit; this, however, is a good restaurant and warrants a four-star rating.

Oh deer Oh deer. It didn't warrant A round of Santa-plause, Away from the puns, it seemed everything which went right last time I visited here seemed to go wrong, from the service, one staff member, in particular, seemed so disinterested, she became argumentative when I mentioned my Long Island Ice Tea didn't taste good, and she also didn't allow me to see a list of the spirits and I basically had to guess what I wanted to order. The fact they added a service charge onto the bill was the icing on the cake. Now I don't mind giving a well-deserved tip, but considering the service was poor and the fact it was added onto the bill was a nightmare, especially considering they refused to knock-off my beverage which I didn't drink. I really did hope my food would be better however it wasn't, my French Onion soup was hot (so hot I burned my mouth!), but that's the only positive thing I can say about it, the colour was awful, it looked like diarrhoea with floating bland onions. Considering how much I enjoyed the soup last time I came to this specific location it was a huge let-down. Hoping my main would be better, I opted for a Christmas Dinner with modifications to make it gluten-free, these modifications include removing the stuffing, bread sauce, pigs in blankets and adding bacon (while still not giving me more or anything else, and charging full price), it already felt like half a dinner. The food again didn't taste as good as it looked, infact it actually seemed to look better on my iPhone 12 Pro Max camera than it did in the flesh. The turkey was rather chewy, the sprouts were undercooked and the vegetables were bland, the gravy which is supposed to make a dish did nothing, considering this is quite a high-end place and it is affiliated with such a great TV personality and chef nonetheless, you expect better but what you get is rubbish. On my last visit, I was surprised to see such a low average rating and right now, I can truly tell why.
