(2019) I am in my mid twenties and I have had genetic bunions ever since I was a child on both feet. I was always so embarrassed of letting people see my feet that I hid them constantly. I was never seen barefoot and I never wore sandals or open toe shoes. As my mother had a bunionectomy at my age, and the pain was getting worse and worse with each passing year, I was very nervous to have two different surgeries. I had heard nightmare stories of how painful the process is and I was suitably terrified. When my friend's mother saw my feet she informed me that she had suffered bunions as well, and had gone to Basile for her bunionectomy. I couldn't tell she'd ever had bunions or the surgery- and I listened when she recommended him. I'm so glad I did. Basile did a bunionectomy and a toe shortening on my right foot to correct a deformity and a straight forward bunionectomy on my left. Both surgeries were in and out with no complications. For my right foot I was out of work for 4 weeks- for the left 2. I was able to get back to the gym in no time and I can honestly say that I am in less pain than before the operation and I'm not self conscious anymore. Don't go to him. He uses students & supervises their work. He doesn't do the work himself. However.... Dr. Basile disfigured my foot. He did a bunionectomy in which he cut my big toe too short but swears he did not. The top of my foot is still puffy with scar tissue after 5 years. He cut a ligament in my second toe and now it sticks straight out, won't bend & is swollen with scar tissue - he never advised of the consequences when discussing how to straighten "hammer toe" which wasn't that bad. He promised to fix the baby toe & pushed it so close to the other toe, that it causes big, painful corns. Where he cut the big toe bone, I now have arthritis and it's remained painful & inflexible since surgery. I just had it confirmed yesterday with another podiatrist, via X-ray. Basile blamed me for the scar tissue, too. He has a reputation of blaming patients for their problems post-surgery. read more

I recommend him. I had a bunion that needed fixing. I saw two podiatrists before him. First said: nothing you can do. The second was not very good at all explaining the procedure, what to expect etc. He was the third. He explained everything very clearly. I understood what my problem was, how he was going to fix it, and what to expect in recovery. He also didn't try to sell me - "Wait on this if you want. You can delay surgery for a few years." I just decided to go ahead and do it. What was rather good was he didn't give me unrealistic expectations. "You're foot will hurt after surgery." It wasn't that bad. "You probably will need 8+ weeks before you are running again." It was 6 weeks instead. With this approach, the patient (me!) is totally psyched when the recovery is easier than what you planned. I first consulted Dr. Basile more than 27 years ago when the pain in my left foot was going unaddressed by several specialists. He immediately diagnosed the condition as Morton's Neuroma and treated it effectively. When I developed a similar pain in my right foot 12 years ago, I wasted no time consulting with others, and once again got very positive results from Dr. Basile. I was profoundly disappointed in my experience with Philip Basile. I saw him a year ago when he was working with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. I had been seen in the emergency room for severe foot pain following a 10-foot fall while rock-climbing and was given a referral to see Philip Basile. When I got to my appointment in 10/10 pain and on crutches, he barely looked at me, told me I'd be fine to return to work on Monday (I routinely walk up to 10 miles a day for my job and am required to lift and carry heavy items!), and asked his assistant to tape up my foot. The taping was such an excruciating process that I cried the whole time as the assistant apologized and suggested that maybe I could see a different doctor or go to a different practice altogether. When I begged Philip Basile to please take into consideration that I too am a medical professional and *know* my foot is not "fine" despite the x-rays he wouldn't hear anything of it. I asked him to write me a note explaining why I couldn't return to work right away. He refused. I returned to the emergency room that same night and was told I had a torn plantar fascia. I was given a referral to another fantastic doctor who listened to my concerns and helped me every step of the way in my 3 month recovery process. PLEASE go to a different podiatrist. I had a fairly extensive reconstructive surgery on my right foot this past January (2013). Peroneal tendon tears repaired, ankle ligaments repaired/tightened, and my heal bone cut in half...repositioned, and screwed back together. I am now two months post-op and two weeks into my physical therapy. My physical therapist was thrilled to hear how much attention to detail Dr. Basile's instructions and prep were. He made sure I was fully aware of the massive length of time it takes to fully recover from this type of surgery. I am a flight attendant and clearly, between the pressure in the cabin and turbulence, my job is VERY demanding on my feet and ankles. I am so glad he took the time to prepare me for what recovery was/is going to be like. Many surgeons care more about simply fixing you and sending you on your way. Not only did Dr. Basile go above and beyond in fixing my foot/ankle but he also went above and beyond in making sure that I was mentally and emotionally prepared for the toll recovery can take. I have little to no scar tissue, no nerve damage aside from a numb spot near the main surgery area (size of a nickel) that's still numb but that's ENTIRELY normal and will come back to normal over time. My physical therapist has been really impressed with the strength my ankle is showing this early after surgery and has marveled at how well I'm healing after such an extensive surgery. I would recommend EVERYONE to go to see Dr. Basile. His staff is great too. The ladies that work there are so friendly, funny, and welcoming. I actually look forward to going for my follow-up appointments. Reading another review here, it honestly sounds like maybe someone got names confused. I'm not saying against the reviewer personally, but the description given doesn't reflect Dr. Philip Basile of Crimson Foot and Ankle in any way. I had my left foot operated on by Dr. Basile in March 2021. He corrected my bunion, tailor's bunion, and shortened my second toe. He explained the whole process thoroughly so I was left with no surprises during recovery. I followed his instructions, I don't smoke, ate well, took vitamin D and C supplements and also had an excellent physical therapist (Norton Physical Therapy). I was running 7 weeks post surgery and I hiked the Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point at The Grand Canyon exactly 8 weeks post surgery. And guess what? No pain! My left foot is now my favorite foot. Before surgery I was hobbling after a hike and could barely stand to have any type of shoe on by the end of each day. I used vitamin e oil and mederma once the wounds were closed so my scars are minimal. He warned me the toe shortening would be the most painful part to recover from, and I agree with him. But if you are willing to put in some work and go to physical therapy if you need to, then you will be back to your normal activities shortly. Oh, and your foot will look beautiful. Also, it's not just Dr. Basile that is fantastic, his team of residents (who you will see during appointments and the day of surgery) are also excellent. A great surgeon needs a great team and his practice provides that. Including his scheduler Melinda, super organized and will always get back to you. Update September 2021: I had my right foot done 3 months after my left foot. I waa running 6 weeks post-op and did not need physical therapy. Once again, excellent work by Dr. Basile and his team. I started out with Dr. Basil's in March 2020. coming up on three years now and I have called office numerous times and left messages on the portal with lack of communication I went in during recovery and my other orthopedic stopped physical therapy because it was making me worse. I've made several attempts again to call. In December I had a phone call saying Y coming up on an anniversary I said really it's not a happy anniversary she said sorry to hear told her my complaints she said she will Dr Basil's still no contact except a text in portal when I said I was calling a lawyer. got a response it's like going to a dentist can't digamoise over phone. I said ok wow what. I said I come in the past just for a X-ray and said all ok. my points going on was the chronic pain with walking which was told I'd be able to walk pain feee has not happened I get up in the morning and can't barely walk and goes through the day. I met Dr. Basile 3 years ago when I was at Mount Auburn Hospital with a MRSA Infection in my left great toe. He removed the infection, and provided very good follow-up care. A little over a year later a callous on that same toe became infected. He told me that since the toe was mis-shapen due to osteoarthritis it would keep having infection problems. However, he said that he could fix it. He removed the arthritic bone tissue, and lined up the knuckles, which essentially straightened out the toe. I have not had any callous or infection problems since the surgery. Since then he has become my personal toe surgeon, and he is the only doctor that is allowed to do anything to my toes. He is now my regular podiatrist, and I'm very happy with how he has been able to take care if my feet. read more

I again highly recommend Dr. Basile. Dr. Basile operated on my left foot last summer with great results. Last month, Dr. Basile operated on my right foot. This surgery was more complicated, therefore the recovery period is much longer. Foot surgery is no walk in the park, in fact I was really nervous before my 2nd surgery. But again, his team at the office and at the hospital were excellent. At each follow up visit he continues to spend time with me reviewing how I'm doing, what to expect, as well as what I should and should not be doing until the next appointment. I came in with an ankle injury today for my first visit after receiving a referral. I had injured my ankle over a year ago and recovered, but the pain came back and it hurt even worse than it used to. The doctor did all the normal checks, and thought there may be a tear. They scheduled me for an x-ray, which was right next door. The x-ray was clear. They are scheduling me for an MRI, since the injury had persisted for a year and I had been resting, icing, elevating and using a brace. The service was excellent. They were very professional. I am a 73 year "young" female who recently had my bunion and a hammertoe fixed by Dr.Basile. He did a great job, told me I'd be in a sneaker in 3 weeks and I was! Boot and crutches for a week,then boot for a week! Now sneakers. At 1 month post op I walked 1.5 miles today. Can't wait to get the other foot done...but I will, until after the summer. Basile came highly-recommended from my doctor but I would not recommend him. He seems to have good reputation for reconstructive surgeries, bunion repair etc but going in for a minor infection issue, I was not treated with the customer service, care or attention that I would expect from a doctor. It is extremely hard to get an appointment with him to begin with and I think his office is hard to get to for someone without a car. And after all of that, my issue was treated as a non-issue and they didn't do anything but give bad advice and suggest I come back to see if they might do something extreme. I saw Dr. Basile for the first time maybe 15 or some odd years ago at BIDMC. Severe plantar fascitis. I am also overweight so I braced myself for the routine lecture. Once I found his office it was crazy in there. Very busy and there was a bit of a wait. I finally got in and bim bam boom, I was told I need a cortison shot and quick as a flash that is what I got. No lectures, no cynicism, no time for formalities. I liked him! I was anxious about it and asked questions which were answered in a friendly albeit harried manner. Drawers were being opened, bandages were being laid out, my foot was being felt up and placed in position. They weren't fooling around. I was done in less than 10 minutes and back on the street. And guess what? No more plantar fascitis. When I needed a toe spur removed I went back to Basile and he did the surgery. I'm an opera singer and I remember being asked to sing by Basile and the OR staff while on the table getting my toe cut open. I got applause and good drugs. Good times. I was prescribed these outrageously expensive orthotics which I had to be fitted for. After a long long long wait I finally got them and they were so uncomfortable to wear I wanted to throw them in the trash. My toe healed up well after the surgery. THEN, years later I got plantar fascitis in the other foot from wearing those ugly Crocs on my feet. Things became urgent when I was about to go on vacation to Vegas and expected a lot of walking and standing in line. I decided to go back to Basile and this time it was different. It was a busy office just like before but this time is was an older more irritable Dr. Basile. Something about working at BIDMC turns people this way I guess. He looked right through me and told me to do heel exercises against a wall and soak my foot in ice. Now folks, by the time I get to the point where I'm willing to shell out a $25 copay you can pretty much be assured I've already tried everything in my means to avoid having to do so. Plus I was in a rush. I told him this but his arms were folded. No. They weren't going to do anything and it seemed clear they wanted me to leave. Fine. I limped out of there, went to Vegas, rented a scooter, swam in the pool and didn't walk on it for two weeks. It went away but I would have much rather ventured out on foot instead of becoming a tourist attraction on that scooter. So there you have it. Basile is a good doctor. He won't botch your surgery but if you feel like he may be giving you the brush off he probably is. Get a second opinion. read more

I used Dr. Basile for FOUR surgeries. I was only planning on having two. One on each foot. I had a complicated case--bunions, flat feet, and double jointed (so he fixed up my ankle). My left foot, after the first surgery, was okay. I still experience some pain and one of my toes doesn't fully touch the floor. But it is still a huge improvement from what I had before. Less than a year after the surgery on my right foot, my big toe started sticking up and I was having tremendous pain under my big toe. I couldn't balance, as my big toe didn't touch the ground. He told me that this would go down with exercises and with soaking my foot. He told me he thought it was an issue of scar tissue. Then another time he completely changed his story. He did this a lot. He expresses his opinion with confidence, but always seems to contradict himself. But I stuck with him through this third surgery, wanting to give him a chance. After the third surgery, MY TOE STARTED STICKING UP EVEN MORE. I went to him and he gave me a completely different explanation as to why this was happening. He said that he had to do an even bigger surgery, and that he didn't do this in the first place because he was hoping that we could avoid it. For some reason, I decided to stick with him. I had my forth surgery. My toe has gone down for the most part, but was still not touching the ground! So I went to see him a few weeks ago. I expressed my concerns, politely, just wanting to hear what he thought was going on. He started getting really nasty and telling me that I was being inpatient and shouldn't be giving him a hard time about it. (I wasn't giving him a hard time--which, if I was, this would be totally reasonable--but I was simply asking why this was still happening). He wouldn't let me ask any questions and kept interupting me, getting ruder and ruder. I started to feel really uncomfortable and was holding back tears. He continued, as my father and I were apalled. I couldn't believe he was treating me this way after sticking with him through FOUR surgeries. He might have been having a bad day, but this was NO excuse to talk to a patient--and a loyal one at that. When I got to the car, I started sobbing. He was so over-the-top and disrespectful--I couldn't believe it. If you are looking for a foot surgeon, please don't see Dr. Basile. I have been debating whether or not to write this post, as we all know what a bad review can do for a business (or doctor). But this isn't out of bitterness. I don't think he is a qualified surgeon, nor do I think he is honest or respectful of his patients. read more

Dr Basile is hands.. well in this case feet down the one and only best podiatrist!! You don't have to look any further.. he's definitely the one you are looking for. Dr Basile is extremely the nicest, caring and very sincere Dr I have ever had. I know you will as well. When he's with you, he is very attentive to his patients. He takes his time with you, eye contact and he listens and explains everything, so you feel completely comfortable. I have heard horror stories about foot surgery and how bad it is etc. Well I needed to have bunion surgery, I was petrified to say the least. Dr Basile reassured me that he would take great care of me and how everything will work out. In June 2020, I had my first surgery and then 9 months later March 2021 I went back to have my other foot surgery! Yes, that's right I had 2 foot surgeries in less than a year!! Why?? Because when you have the best of the best for your Dr you are guaranteed to have the greatest outcome. I most certainly did. For the first time in my life, I am pain free and I am looking forward to going shopping for sandals, high heels, etc. I would not be able to do this if it wasn't for the best podiatrist. I met Dr Basile 3 years ago, two months ago I had surgery to remove a bunion, correct a bone deformity and removal of a hammer toe. Dr Basile and his team was very spot on, even on the day of surgery he and his team made me feel relax and calm. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Basile. I was suddenly having this extreme pain on the top of my foot and I had no idea why. Dr. Basiles office took me in in a very timely manner and they all were very polite and welcoming. Everyone from the secretary, xray tech, medical assistant, and Dr. Basile himself were very professional and courteous. It turned out I had a stress fracture in my foot. Dr Basile originally thought that when he examined me but ordered an xray just to be sure. When he told me my results he said 'I hate when I'm right'. I appreciated his humor in the matter, it is such a great quality for a doctor to have! He even showed me the xray himself and explained to me what was going on. I am finally healed now. The reviews that "aren't recommended" should be reviewed very carefully. These are real patients and their experiences correspond with mine. Not sure why they have been discarded when someone on here who had surgery 18 yrs ago is considered valid. Bottom line: he likes to do surgery- its profitable, etc. Anything else will get that brushoff people are talking about. Even post-op..he doesn't really care. Always get a 2nd opinion about whether the surgery is advised-that's the most important thing. Mine was not as it turns out, and I've had problems ever since. read more

(Update: I was billed $100 for this nightmare of a visit, even with my insurance coverage. After complaining to the office, they offered to discount my fee to $75. Because I don't want any black marks on my credit report, I suppose I'll pay it, but I'm definitely not happy about it) I've had a persistent painful callus/blister for several years now. While I can shave it down periodically to walk pain-free, if any shear force is applied at all (e.g. jogging, sports, hiking downhill), the callus swells and the pain is unbearable after 5-10 minutes. Dr. Basile met with me for literally one minute, including less than 10 seconds of actually looking at my foot. He didn't ask any questions regarding the history of my callus. He said the only option was applying over the counter callus softening cream, and he made a beeline for the door (this is 30 seconds in). Perhaps his advice was true, but he didn't ask for my history with the callus, and he obviously rushed his time with me. I had to literally plead with him as he was leaving the room to give me more information and to explain his diagnosis to me. He didn't discuss application instructions, whether to avoid exercise or for how long, or what to do if the cream didn't work. I manged to also ask about the option of having my callus professionally shaved down by a podiatrist (a solution that online forums about callus removal mention), and he dismissed that solution without weighing its pros and cons compared to foot cream. One minute after he entered the room, he was gone. I'm not sure what Dr. Basile's hurry was. Maybe he was overbooked, and my problem is admittedly not as severe as his other patients' problems may be. Maybe his visual inspection of the callus made it seem like something that would go away with a little rest and time, but he never asked about its history to inform his diagnosis. But Anna K.'s review on Yelp shows that he's overlooked very severe foot problems in the past, while ignoring the vocal concerns of the patient. Dr. Basile may or may not be a gifted surgeon, I can't speak to that. But he has been the only doctor who's manner/brusqueness has irritated me. If you have a choice, go see someone else. read more

Everything about my experience with Dr. Basile and his office staff has been exceptional. Today I had what should be my last appointment, and I was kind of sad to say goodbye! I was able to get an initial appointment easily, and within only four months, I completed X-rays, an MRI, and a surgery (along with the necessary visits to Dr. Basile in between and post-op) and am now on my way to a pain-free foot after having a benign tumor diagnosed and removed. The entire process was efficient and attentive, and Dr. Basile, along with his residents, actually made it enjoyable. They even welcomed my 3-year-old who had to accompany me to most office visits. I saw Dr. Basile over the course of about 2 years for pain in my foot. He diagnosed a fractured sesamoid bone in the ball of my left foot and started with conservative treatment (orthotics, followed by cortisone shot). When those didn't work, we decided that surgery was the best course of action, so on 1/20/16 I had a piece of the fractured bone removed and he also repositioned my first metatarsal (which means to fracture it and screw it back together) to take pressure off of the ball of that foot. I really like Dr. Basile's approach and he was a pleasure to work with. He's encouraging, straight-forward, and really knows his stuff. The office staff is great and I had a great experience at Mt. Auburn hospital for day surgery as well. I was back in a tennis shoe after 2 weeks, and after 5 you can barely see my scar and I'm pain free. read more

Dr. Basile performed a double bunionectomy for me 18 years ago, including shortening a bone in my foot and putting in a pin. It healed beautifully and I could not be happier with the results. I had a reaction to a pain medication after I went home after day surgery and Dr Basile was very concerned and followed up with me to make sure the situation was quickly resolved. All this time later, I had to see Dr. Basile again last fall, as I had started a job where I'm on my feet a lot, and was having sore feet at the end of the day. I tried some off-the-rack shoe inserts recommended by a machine at the drugstore that caused me to have a stabbing pain in the side of my foot, where I had never had a problem before. Even after I stopped using the inserts, my new problem persisted, so I made the appointment. Dr. Basile knew immediately what the problem was, and explained in great detail what was happening. I had a shot (sorry, can't remember what it was) in the painful joint, and after a few days of residual pain, my foot was much better and steadily improved until the pain was totally gone. Dr. Basile approved of the shoes I was wearing at work (I brought in two pair of sensible shoes) and recommended some other brands as well. He was very helpful and I was so happy to hear I did not need anything major for my foot. read more

My wife has had two surgeries with Dr. Basie. The first 4 years ago and the second two years ago. Both to correct the same problem with a callous on the bottom of her foot. Now being on the sidelines and caring for her after surgery, I know what steps she took for her recovery. Today she had an appointment for him to take a look at her foot yet again as she still has the callous every three months or so and it needs to be chipped out. My wife wanted to talk to him before she went for xrays about the situation and maybe the need for an xray from below. Well the student doctor came in and my wife told her that she wanted to talk to Basile before she had xrays done. The student doctor said ok. After about 30 to 40 minutes Basile came in with a different student doctor and took a look at her foot and kept shaking his head then started about my wife refusing to have xrays done. My wife firmly told him she didn't refuse,she just wanted to talk to him first. He stated he was the doctor and knew what xrays to take and she could have saved time by getting them done. He also told her there was nothing he could do for her foot.. And here he was the doctor who performed both surgeries. That was it and he couldn't help her. He even tried to blame her for the problem, saying she didn't follow his instructions for recovery. I guess it must have sounded pretty good to the staff because as we walked out of the room there were quite a few staff milling around the door. This guy seemed pretty good the second surgery. He was pleasant and told her what he was going to do to correct the problems from the first surgery. We had faith in this guy. That's what his job was. Since the last surgery, my wife has tried to contact him between 10 and 15 times with no call back at all. She had just recently, within the last month, tried to contact his office in regards to a simple question, but it went unanswered. So to end this, we both took the day off for this office visit, sat around for about an hour in total saw him for about 10 minutes,and ended up walking out of his office. Still had to pay the co-pay, oh yeah, they wanted that right away, but wouldn't refund it afterwards. I would not recommend this guy to anyone. read more
