    Lechon Kawali

KEEP COMING BACK Several times when I go grocery shopping at Island Pacific with my dad I noticed the line for Phil House. My first time was on a Sunday in August just past Noon. I order the BBQ chicken sticks. Usually I order BBQ chicken sticks outside Island Pacific. I thought since the chicken sticks were grilled in premise at Phil House they would be moist. The chicken sticks at Phil House were dry and stringy. After my first experience at Phil House I wasn't planning to come back. I eventually three more times. Why? There is a food porn addiction I have. That is crispy pork skin with meat (ex. lechon, lechon kawali, crispy pata). Instead of elaborating every visit I'll just provide a quick snippet. The second time was two months later I ate here I ordered the crispy pata. The skin was crispy. The was tender at the beginning of the bite, but the more I ate the meat it was too crispy for my liking. Two months after that I ordered the lechon kawali. Of all the items I ordered from Phil House the lechon kawali was my least favorite and that's unfortunate because I never had a bad lechon kawali before. The skin was chewy. I believe the reason is the fat wasn't rendered at all. In addition the meat was oily. Just before the start of Lent I was ambitious. Despite my feeling if I'm going get one more time I might as well buy one of the most expensive items. I bought half a crispy pig head for about $29. The skin was crispy. The meat as with the crispy pata was too crunchy for my taste. After multiple visits due to items like crispy pata, lechon kawali, and crispy pig head I don't plan to buy food from Phil House anytime soon.

Hospitality is a trademark of the Pilipino culture & this is very evident here. I come at least once a week to pick up 3-5 items for our weekly meals. Whether it's the arroz caldo, or BBQ, kaldereta, menudo, Ginataang Sitaw & Kalabasa, or ginataang langka- we've never been disappointed. Food is always good! It's the closest to a home cooked meal for us.

Finally opened up in Island Pacific and it was on and poppin'. Lots of people in line and plenty of food for everyone. We came on a Sunday afternoon around noon and the line wasn't too long, but after us, a lot of people began coming in. It was a bit confusing to order or how the line worked because we wanted to go see all the foods before deciding but there was just so many people it was hard to take a look. But one worker helped us with our order and we just pointed out what we wanted as we waited in line. So many options and everything looked so good! The BBQ sticks are yummy and must have. We also got the fried shrimp, fried little crabs (so cute), and chicharron bulaklak. All of which came out to around $60 something. For the fried items, you order it by the pound or half a pound. The chicharron bulaklak came out to almost $20 per lb. The little fried crabs were about $8 per half lb. That was the first time having those fried crabs and I loved them! Would def go back for those! I can't wait to try all the other foods because they have so many options!

There's a new fast food right inside Island Pacific. Browsing around, I saw a lot of Filipino food being offered. They have a section for vegetables, fried meat, fish, desserts, and BBQ sticks. There is a bit of a line and it was slow since the customers can't decide what to buy. There are only a few servers assisting which makes it slower. The price for the food is posted but I noticed a lot of customers asking for the price for small or large containers. The selection is enormous and mouth-watering. If you're Filipino, you'll be able to take home a lot of dishes that your Mama or Lola don't cook. Some of the items are your favorite Filipino food. We had a large-size Lomi. It's a soup with large noodles, beef, and a fish ball. It's delicious and didn't taste salty. Those who want to cater a party, also have a choice of items that will serve a big group or family. This place is a big hit among Filipino in Union City. I'll definitely come back and get more of the food in their selection.

YUM YUM YUM!…read more Everyone is still going on about how AMAZING the cupcakes at our reception were. Before the wedding we must have gone to about 10 cupcakeries looking for delish cupcakes. While some were great, Minals cupcakes just blew us away. They aren't dry or super dense, they have the perfect amount of fluff and sweetness that you don't want to stop eating them! We ended up ordering a bunch of different flavors: lemon, strawberry, coconut, mint-choc chip, and red velvet (my fav!).. and all were exceptionally good. The cupcakes look like a piece of artwork, which is always a plus. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Sweets & Treats for their one of a kind cupcakes, their affordability and professionalism. You will not be disappointed!

I have been a longtime fan of her strawberry cupcakes and request them for my birthday every year but have to admit that each one of her creations is simply sinful. Her cakes are very very moist and each cupcake actually tastes like the flavor it is meant to be! I was lucky enough to have her make her famous truffles at one of my wedding events and they went like hotcakes! Some guests didn't even get to try any because they were gone too fast. Don't make the same mistake I did and when you order from her, be sure to order way more than you think you need because more than likely, it will still not be enough!

It started off well as they let me customize Order 2 and Order 3 on two different days but when the food was delivered it went downhill. The Monday delivery had Dal Makhani (the only tasty dish which earns the 1 star - I give credit where it's due) and it had paneer vindaloo which was just watery gravy and exactly 2 pieces of paneer in the 16 Oz box... talk about cheating!! and the mixed vegetable sabji had bell peppers, onions and channa!!! where is the word does mixed vegetable sabji have channa? and yes it had paneer pieces too it was it tofu? not sure. but it tasted spoilt. When I told the person about it they said they will check with the kitchen and get back but they never did, till I asked them on the second day of delivery. On the second day, there was shahi paneer (btw their food is delivered cold) which was made of coconut milk. yes the flavor was decent but guess what happens when you heat coconut milk? it becomes watery!! and this time there were 4 pieces of paneer floating in the watery gravy. Yes, they gave me two dabbas to make up for the first delivery but I have had food from many other places where every single mouth had a paneer piece literally with the gravy ... PM me and I can share the names!! This is pure daylight robbery. Pricey to the boot (yes they deliver for free but it is incorporated in the price) and substance is less. And finally the bindi masala - the Bindi was so fibrous and had so many end pieces. For charging so much can't they get good bindi?? I will definitely not order from them again and wouldn't advice anyone to either!

My (now) husband is a severe Celiac and so making sure all food is completely Gluten-free was the number one concern. The Chef was quick to respond and so helpful in brainstorming a potential menu for the event (we settled on Mexican). She then got started on putting together the recipes and gathering the proposed ingredient list. This is where the Chef went above and beyond for us-she sent us the full recipes and proposed ingredients(down to the specific brands) so that we could ensure that everything was free from gluten and free from cross-contamination (a shocking amount of spices are processed on the same equipment as wheat). She even was able to find a way to make gluten free Tres Leches and Tiramisu (our favorites). For our wedding cakes! Menu: Crudités with Green Goddess Dip Queso Fundido with Chorizo Pico de Gallo Chopped Salad Chili Verde Stew Slow Cooked Barbocoa Tacos Roasted Zucchini Sweet Bell Pepper Rice Spicy Citrus Black Beans Tres Leches with strawberries Tiramisu Preparation: The chef packaged up all of our food so that my sister could pick it up and transport it (our venue was 4 hours north of the bay). She provided detailed instructions for reheating the food and prepping the cakes. She even made sure we would have any additional utensils that would be necessary. She gave me an accurate and in-depth invoice that broke down the expenses and made it easy to work into our wedding budget. Food: WOW WOW WOW! The best part (obviously) was the food! Everything was fresh and vibrant and so so delicious! The Queso provided the best cheese pull I have ever seen and my husband and I are still drooling over that Tres Leches and my family keeps bringing up how incredible the dinner was! Additionally my husband was able to freely eat everything to his hearts content, confident that he wouldn't become ill on our special day. I cannot recommend Chef Johanna enough!!
