Steam table format where you just glance at their steam table behind glass and pick and choose what you're in the mood for. One of the biggest 'pick n point' set-ups I've seen. The choices are so great that it makes the line messy and chaotic as nobody moves in a clean fashion from start to finish. People are moving all around to view stuff and many people are ordering multiple things so they'll take up an employees time much more than say 1 person trying to just get a quick lunch. They have grilled items (inihaw) which I think is sold by the pound. So I don't think you can get this inside your rice combo pick. I saw bbq'd meat sticks, whole grilled fishes and squid and whole grilled pork belly (liempo). I haven't tried anything grilled yet but may soon. For those rice plate combos you can only choose from their stewed or soup sections. So everything will be saucy and/or cooked for a good amount of time. This is where you will find your basic staples like adobo, sinigang and other common faves. A one item plate is about $11 and a 2 item combo is about $17ish. And they give you plenty of rice that I can never finish a plate here in one sitting. Towards the end of the line, there is a section with just fried things. Like the biggest selection of fried things that I've ever seen. Whole pork hocks (crispy pata), lechon kawali, fried chicken, fried fish and seafood, like absolutely dizzying and tempting. Everything here is sold by the pound. I haven't tried anything here yet, and not sure if I will ever as things are just sitting there for a time that none of us know, and some things just look overly fried and possibly dry/tough. And some reviews point to that direction. Things tried: Bistek: (3*) Pretty chewy beef slices in a strong soy flavored sauce. There's a little lemon flavor but think it could be more balanced. And there were very little onions in my packing and big chunks of al dente onions should be a big part of the bites for this dish. Meh. Dinaguan: (3*) Decent flavor but the sauce was too thick for me. I grew up with a thinner sauce, so the sauce remains more smooth and not as coagulated/grainy. The pork chunks were a mixed bag, some lean pieces and some quite fatty. I thinned this out at home and added a little more chile to it, I liked it better after I altered it. Paksiw: (4*) This is a fish soup flavored with vinegar, ginger and some vegetables. The fish is a whole steak of milk fish, so there will be tiny feather bones to deal with. I found their broth to be quite aromatic but very tart, like will pinch the joint of the jaws. Too tart for me but some Filipinos may like it this way. But I found the fish steak in my portion to be pretty good, fresh tasting with good texture. Often the meat can be reheated several times, so the texture gets mushy/overcooked. I was impressed. Mongo: (4*) This is a mung bean stew, much like a thick split pea or lentil soup. Very hearty and chunky with chunks of fried pork. They probably use chopped up lechon kawali as the protein. Decent flavor from what I can recall, like I didn't have any negative impressions. Pork Sinigang: (2.5*) Opened up the cup container and it looked decent. But the broth again was way too tart. Better mixed in with rice but too tart for me to sip on its own. And the pork chunks were totally a mixed bag, some seemed fresh while other bites seemed like an older batch that got mixed in. Total 50/50 satisfaction bites. Would not get again. This is inside the Island Pacific Grocery Store and is somewhat newish. I go to this store often and I am often enticed to try something as it is very visible and convenient. But in what I've got thus far, I'm thinking to using some discipline and opt for other nearby options. Must resist super convenience as it rarely leaves a special impression. read more

KEEP COMING BACK Several times when I go grocery shopping at Island Pacific with my dad I noticed the line for Phil House. My first time was on a Sunday in August just past Noon. I order the BBQ chicken sticks. Usually I order BBQ chicken sticks outside Island Pacific. I thought since the chicken sticks were grilled in premise at Phil House they would be moist. The chicken sticks at Phil House were dry and stringy. After my first experience at Phil House I wasn't planning to come back. I eventually three more times. Why? There is a food porn addiction I have. That is crispy pork skin with meat (ex. lechon, lechon kawali, crispy pata). Instead of elaborating every visit I'll just provide a quick snippet. The second time was two months later I ate here I ordered the crispy pata. The skin was crispy. The was tender at the beginning of the bite, but the more I ate the meat it was too crispy for my liking. Two months after that I ordered the lechon kawali. Of all the items I ordered from Phil House the lechon kawali was my least favorite and that's unfortunate because I never had a bad lechon kawali before. The skin was chewy. I believe the reason is the fat wasn't rendered at all. In addition the meat was oily. Just before the start of Lent I was ambitious. Despite my feeling if I'm going get one more time I might as well buy one of the most expensive items. I bought half a crispy pig head for about $29. The skin was crispy. The meat as with the crispy pata was too crunchy for my taste. After multiple visits due to items like crispy pata, lechon kawali, and crispy pig head I don't plan to buy food from Phil House anytime soon. read more

Finally opened up in Island Pacific and it was on and poppin'. Lots of people in line and plenty of food for everyone. We came on a Sunday afternoon around noon and the line wasn't too long, but after us, a lot of people began coming in. It was a bit confusing to order or how the line worked because we wanted to go see all the foods before deciding but there was just so many people it was hard to take a look. But one worker helped us with our order and we just pointed out what we wanted as we waited in line. So many options and everything looked so good! The BBQ sticks are yummy and must have. We also got the fried shrimp, fried little crabs (so cute), and chicharron bulaklak. All of which came out to around $60 something. For the fried items, you order it by the pound or half a pound. The chicharron bulaklak came out to almost $20 per lb. The little fried crabs were about $8 per half lb. That was the first time having those fried crabs and I loved them! I like the barbecue skewers. If you buy five, you get one free. Not bad for around 4 each. It is a better value than the BBQ guy outside Island Pacific. While it is $2.50 each outside, it is less than half the size of Phil House. Taste about the same. I like the kare kare too but they don't always have it available. There's a new fast food right inside Island Pacific. Browsing around, I saw a lot of Filipino food being offered. They have a section for vegetables, fried meat, fish, desserts, and BBQ sticks. There is a bit of a line and it was slow since the customers can't decide what to buy. There are only a few servers assisting which makes it slower. The price for the food is posted but I noticed a lot of customers asking for the price for small or large containers. The selection is enormous and mouth-watering. If you're Filipino, you'll be able to take home a lot of dishes that your Mama or Lola don't cook. Some of the items are your favorite Filipino food. We had a large-size Lomi. It's a soup with large noodles, beef, and a fish ball. It's delicious and didn't taste salty. Those who want to cater a party, also have a choice of items that will serve a big group or family. This place is a big hit among Filipino in Union City. I'll definitely come back and get more of the food in their selection. read more

BULLY SENIOR CASHIER! Today around 6:10, I was debating if I should buy or not because needed to be home by 6:20 (home is just few blocks away). First, I took a peek inside, noticed only 2 customers ahead of me, so why not take chances? The cashier was slow, a chatter and bully! She was taking her sweet time and can't multi task! A worker greeted her, she stopped doing what she was doing like wanting to chat and the way she was inputting the buyer's items was sooo slow.
