Are the classes done CrossFit style?

Hi Nikki, I'd say we differentiate ourselves from Crossfit in a number of ways. Every class is different, and designed to challenge a set of muscle groups and movement patterns that are multi-planar (several planes of motion), while being led… Read more

The Gym: the facility is small but clean, and the patrons range in age and fitness levels. Everyone is very welcoming and understanding of the sometimes tight quarters that can take place in a smaller place, and they do their best to keep out of the way or allow others to pass. It's a great place and I enjoyed it a lot. The Trainer: Diane is amazing!!! My wife and I wanted to learn how to safely carry out weight training with dumbbells and a variety of other equipment as we're getting to the age where it's important to maintain our muscle mass. Diane did a great job developing a program that we felt like we could tackle, and over the course of eight weeks we saw massive improvements in strength and balance. She's also very sweet and fun to hang out with as you sweat your way through your hour. We highly recommend her!!

I've been meaning to write this for a while, but life has been busy. I'm 74, and have never been as…read morefit as I should be, but I got into really bad condition during the pandemic, way too much sitting. I started having severe back pain and found that walking with hiking poles helped this. I thought it was due to my spinal curvature (but it turns out it was due to weakened muscles!). I used to be a member of the Berkeley YMCA, but didn't like it as much when I returned after the pandemic, with the women's fitness center gone. So I was mainly walking at the Marina. But last summer I had 2 falls there, both stupid things, tripping on my pole and on the edge of a raised surface. The second fall caused a fracture in my ring finger and I had to get my wedding rings cut off, as they quickly became tourniquets on my swollen finger. So I decided to look for another gym, where I could hold on to the handles on the treadmill. I asked my kids for recommendations. One of them mentioned All in One Fitness in Albany, a few blocks from his house, where he'd seen a sign welcoming people over 40. So I went and checked it out, and this is what I found: To start, it's easy to get to from my West Berkeley home, easy free parking, comfortable and friendly atmosphere, wonderful and friendly trainers, all the equipment one could need in a small space. My trainer, Diane, who is also the manager, is not only excellent as a trainer, but her enthusiasm and support has been really been encouraging. I feel comfortable there with everyone; I don't feel out of place at all. This place, and in particular Diane, my trainer, has truly changed my life! Diane said at the beginning that she wanted to make it fun for me to come to the gym. I thought, "Oh, right!" (in a skeptical, eyeball rolling way). But it happened - it is fun! And I feel so much better! And I can walk without my poles and carry grocery bags! I have personal training twice a week, which has been wonderful for learning new things and keeping up the variety and fun. I have so many things I can do now, not just the treadmill and bicycle, and I can do them on my own between training days. I think it's been 5 months now, and I'm getting stronger and feeling so much better! As I said, it's changed my life! I highly recommend this gym!

I really wanted to like IBX fitness. I went for a solid 10 months to classes. I thought their…read moreclasses were fine, they weren't amazing but they got the job done. What struck me immediately about this gym was how anti-social everyone was. Even though we were in a small class with a lot of the same people, nobody really talked to each other or even said hello. I tried to make an effort every time to at least say hi to one person, but it was always awkward. I thought maybe if I just kept coming things would change. They never did. I finally brought this up to the coaches after a few months and offered some possible suggestions of how to foster some more connection, but nothing changed. I don't need my gymmates to be my best friends, but it's just more fun when people know each other or just even say "hi" or "good job" at the end of a class. The gym hosts social functions occasionally but being a busy mom I never had the luxury of attending these (though it didn't seem to matter during class as people still didn't talk). There were other frustrating things about the studio as well, such as how difficult it was to book a class. The owners were so focused on increasing their membership that classes filled up 2 weeks in advance, and unless you didn't work and could go to a class at any time during the day, it was impossible to get in otherwise. In addition, they have extremely strict policies about being on time, (which I totally appreciate as a on-time type of person), but things happen, and sometimes even I might be a couple minutes late. If you are even a couple minutes late, they don't let you into class. As a busy full-time working mom of 2 kids, I just found these aspects to be really frustrating, as I needed some sort of flexibility. Overall, it always felt like they were more concerned about marketing and getting new members than they were about their actual members' experience. Not once were we offered any kind of way to give feedback anonymously, such as a survey (aside from adding new class times). There was no way I could provide feedback aside from going to the coaches directly. I've been a member of several other gyms and never felt this way before. I tend to love fitness classes and studios of all types!

I had a membership for four 50 minute stretches a month and sometimes I wouldn't be able to get all four in for that month and they would extend the last stretch into the next month for me as a courtesy! I've gone to a lot of the staff before but my favorites are my girls, Molly and Lucia. They do book up pretty quickly so book your appointments as early as possible. Definitely try out different people cause our bodies are different and different people can help out different ways. I've tried to make sure to refer my family and friends to get stretches with them cause even if you are adamant about doing them yourself, it's nothing like getting it done by someone else especially an expert. Can't say anything negative about the Albany staff. They are amazing. I tell them all the time. Do yourself a favor and check them out. No pictures to share as I want to protect privacy when I come.

I came to Bay Strength after many years of on and off weight training with self-coaching using primarily the Starting Strength book and video resources. My form was "good enough" that when I tried getting coaching at other gyms I was always disappointed because they would say, "looks good," although I knew I needed some fine tuning. At Bay Strength I did the "Learn to Lift" package and while my form actually was pretty good, Kelly had plenty of specific feedback to make it better. Then I joined Gwyn's weekly class and get programming based on my needs and goals, and valuable feedback in every session. I love the group coaching format because it allows for the coaches to provide more attention to people who need it but still give plenty of attention to people who need less. It's a super-efficient model that gives you access to a coach during your session but you don't end up paying for a coach to watch you warm up, after you've properly learned how. They can just focus their attention on your work sets. Then as things come up (i.e. technique, loading, programming questions, weird pains, etc.) it's great to be able to talk with an expert who can help. Aside from the expert coaching and high-quality equipment, there are two benefits I think are unique to Bay Strength: 1. Outdoor workouts: From a Covid19 perspective this is an extremely low risk environment, which is one reason I started here. I then grew to really enjoy lifting outside, especially during a rainstorm! 2. Inclusive community: I really like training with a group of people who are quite diverse, but all there for a similar purpose. I go to lift first, but it's great to have the social connection and support of other lifters without that "gym bro" vibe.

He was kind, seemed to know what he was doing, felt he could help me with my chronic low back pain and elbow tendonitis. I was feeling hopeful when I left. He said he'd like to see me twice/week if possible. Went straight to book the appts at the front desk, but was told they couldn't get me on the books with him again for three weeks. Not great for continuity or knowing whether I was doing the exercises correctly, but I figured it would get easier with time, so I made two appointments, three and four weeks, respectively from the first. After patiently waiting the three weeks, unsure if the exercises were helping or making things worse, it was the day before my 2nd appt with Eric, which I was very much looking forward to, and I got a confirmation text saying I had an appt the next day with "Nia." I looked on the website and she is a PT assistant. And, more importantly, not Eric, who I had the appointment with. That I waited three weeks for. I called to explain this and was told that they don't have enough PTs and that's part of the deal that you'll be seeing PT assistants. No one explained this from the beginning or even mentioned it when I was told by the front desk person I had two appts booked with Eric. This is not the way to treat patients. Eric might have been great and helped me with my pain. I'll never know. I won't be going back.
