Ryan came and met with us at our house and talked with us, then went out on a training walk in our neighbourhood. A lot of the advice was what we had already learned (which was actually reassuring, because we prefer the positive reinforcement model) but he gave us some helpful tips about how to actually apply it outside. He also gave us some really useful insight into why our dog was behaving the way he does, plus he gave us a better idea on where we had been going wrong in the past (basically moving ahead too quickly without really perfecting the good behaviours). We've seen some improvements in our dog, though I admit that any delays are always due to our lack of consistency. I do wish Ryan could just magically transfer his cool and calm demeanour to us on our walks -- as soon as our dog was in his hands, he calmed right down and followed all of his commands. Of course our dog was so perfectly behaved when someone else was around, but this actually proved a big point about our own body language affecting our dog. I would definitely recommend Ryan to anyone.

He then proceeded to urinate himself and poop (our dog is potty trained) from being afraid. This was brought on by him persistantly not remaining in a sit position on command. We were told he tried to bite her after the pinch (he is a cockapoo weighing no more than 20 pounds, she was able to hold him up with one hand) but maybe that was an appropriate response for a dog that is being physically hurt. Yes our dog is a bit of work due to his energy level and excitement and no, he doesn't bite people ever normally and is not aggressive. After seeing him wail in pain and horror we were just reminded of why we got a dog in the first place. We love them and are lucky to be their companions. They do not need to be scared into obedience like this. Disappointed to see so much force used on the dogs. Again, she held him up in the air by just his martingale collar for a long moment. We were horrified by the sound of him wailing. While some pet owners may be more inclined to use punishment and physical force to train we found it was not right for us. It may or may not have been an isolated incident, but it was enough for us to decide not to go back.

Always have and always will. Sometimes they break your heart when you have to say goodbye. Sometimes it's for other reasons. I just want the world to know Ted's and Molly's story. They deserve to be heard. We bought Molly, a Berne doodle from a back yard breeder at the end of COVID. She was skittish and scared of her own shadow, but she was never hostile or aggressive. Until the horrible time, when we decided to put her in overnight care with somebody, we thought we trusted, her former trainer. We were also at that time taking Tara's dog for lengthy periods of time. He was also a doodle and the sweetest little guy imaginable. I should have twigged in to how bad things were for him as every time we returned him, he would latch onto my hand, almost like begging us not to send him back. Then we went house hunting on the island and had Tara look after Maggie and Molly at her shop, which mu husband had spent hours building for her! When we came to pick her up, Molly was missing her leash and her collar. Again, we should have twigged in that maybe she was being kept elsewhere or? Once home our nervous Molly changed completely in personality. Where once I could feed her by hand, she was aggressively biting me every time I did. If anything was left on the floor, she would attack you over it. She bit Len badly and he ended up with sepsis and we had such a horrible hospital experience over it. I went to various vets, all who told me that they didn't believe in euthanasia for such a young dog and that she should be rehomed to another family. This I could not morally or ethically do. She was too dangerous to say the least. One night out of nowhere, she attacked me on the couch. Thank goodness for a good friend who contacted her vet about the situation. When I saw him, I explained to him what had gone on. He said Molly was too dangerous to be rehomed and nothing we could do could ever change her. The fact of the biting meant we could never trust her. No amount of training or meds could undo the damage that had been done to her at the daycare center. So we came to the horrible decision of putting her down. Meanwhile my husband went through months of rehab, learning how to walk and recover from the draining after effects of the sepsis. We went through months of hell as a result. Now fast forward to a night this past August. We got a message from Tara asking if we could come and get Ted as her landlords were wanting him gone. We thought maybe this was a noise problem. Getting there we soon learned differently. Her landlords told us that she was looking after other dogs as well as Teddy in a coach apartment. NONE of the dogs was being walked or pottyed outside the apartment! They did a check of the apartment and discovered that they weren't being fed or watered either. When I saw Teddy, my heart just broke. He was muzzled and looked like he came from a Third World country. I contacted a rescue person I know and she is actively trying to help the landlords with an SPCA complaint and the cops as well. We can't take Teddy given all the stuff that has gone on, especially with a pup and a senior citizen dog too in our care. He will need a lot of rehab and I think the SPCA is the best agency to help him. I have cried and cried over this and wished that I had seen the signs earlier and done something about it. It would have made things better for both Teddy and Molly!
