The Scholls - Bald Peak - Laurel area includes the area's Wester hills, the Chehalem Mountains, between us and the coast range, higher at 1600 feet, than Council Crest. It's Washington County and Yamhill County, rising over Gaston, Newberg, Sherwood, and Farmington.
The area is forestland, vineyards and orchards. Oregon produces 99% of America's hazelnuts, and they are considered the best in the world. You will find hazelnut and walnut orchards here, with new plantings ongoing. There are many vineyards and winemaking facilities taking advantage of the slopes. Blueberry, raspberry and the occasional strawberry field may be found. Some people grow grains and hay. There are even herb growers. Landscape plants. There are a few cattle, pigs, sheep; quite a few goats, and alpacas!
There are large gated estates and manufactured homes. The Internet requires your own special antenna and connection. Cell reception has holes.
There are not many businesses in the area. There are a few closed ones trying to come back, like the Laurel Valley Store. There is a pizza place, two casual restaurants and one church.
And there is the Petrich General Store. It burned down and the community banded together to rebuild it. It really is a general store!
They have all the convenience store items: beer, soda, snacks. Their milk, Albenrose was fresh. They have a very small produce section. Some frozen, canned and shelf-stable foods. Tools, nuts, bolts, screws, electrical wiring and plumbing parts. Light reading books and nick-nacks.
This is the only gasoline station in the area. They have regular 87 octane fuel *only*. They do have propane tank exchange. You are out in the country!
The staff was friendly and related the store history. There are not many general stores left, this one is a nice one to visit if you are in the area!
