I stopped into Petraroia Deli on a recent weekday and was immediately charmed by this classic Italian-style deli tucked into a beautiful old red-brick building. From the moment you see the elegant vintage sign and bright red double doors, you know you're in for something authentic. The interior feels warm and welcoming, with a big, clear menu board that makes ordering easy. They have a solid selection of hot and cold sandwiches, breakfast options, and coffee. I went with one of their specials -- it looked like a chicken cutlet or eggplant variation with fresh greens (possibly arugula), roasted red peppers or similar, and what appeared to be a touch of egg or cheese. Whatever it was, it was excellent. The sandwich came on a perfect crusty Italian roll -- the bread was fresh with a great chew and slight crisp on the outside. The fillings were generous, flavorful, and well-balanced. The greens added a nice peppery bite that cut through the richness of the protein and any sauces. It was one of those sandwiches where every bite tastes just as good as the last. Service was friendly and efficient (the guy behind the counter was busy but still took time to make sure everything was right). The place has that old-school deli atmosphere mixed with modern touches -- exactly what you want when you're craving a quality sandwich. If you're in the area and looking for a no-nonsense, delicious deli sandwich made with care, Petraroia Deli is worth a visit. Rating: 5/5 (Would give 4.5 if I could!) We stopped by this place before a hike to pick up a couple of sandwiches for afterward--and I'm so glad we did. I'd honestly give it a 4.5 if that were possible, but since 4 felt too low, I'm rounding up. It was stellar. The spot itself is super quaint, tucked into a charming little rural town that seriously felt like it belonged on a Hallmark movie set. The staff were incredibly friendly and helped us choose our order, which was much appreciated. I went with the classic Italian combo, and it was absolute perfection. Seriously, a sandwich doesn't get better than this. The meat-to-bread ratio was spot on, and the mix of mayo with oil and vinegar added amazing flavor. The bread was just right--chewy enough to have a nice pull, but soft enough that it didn't fall apart or make the sandwich hard to eat. Highly recommend. We also tried the turkey club, which was tasty but not quite as successful due to the ciabatta bread. It was a bit too hard, and the fillings kept sliding out, making it tough to eat. I have to say - I enjoyed my sandwiches and they were fairly well appointed for the price. The Italian combo was savory and delicious on a crusty French/Italian hybrid loaf (not at all NJ/NY traditional Italian sub roll). Previous reviewers lamented it not being packed enough - I have to disagree. I found it to be ample, fresh, and well dressed. Any more meat on the crusty bread would have made it impossible to eat. On a whim, I also ordered half of their popular fried artichoke sandwich. It was fine. I wish I hadn't tried it - but my curiosity got the best of me. I wanted it to taste like spinach and artichoke dip on a baguette. It wasn't. And I found the luke-warm fried artichoke brineiness was fighting the lemon vinaigrette - with the peppery arugula urging them on. But, still very good portion - and for those who enjoy the combo - I am sure they can appreciate the crusty baguette and fresh ingredients. Next time I'm getting the Cuban and pastrami. Very good place in the area to get a sandwich when you're in town and do not want to hit the more traditional italian delis in Watertown, Torrington, or Waterbury. What has me really scratching my head is... this is not a deli. It's a sandwich shop with a very definitive and powerful coffee-shop vibe. There is no salami or garlic hanging from the ceiling - but, rather, the smells and array of different coffee roasts greet you immediately upon walking in and the customers are seated in cozy window nooks or large Soho Community tables reading books, sharing delicious looking baked goods from the dessert case, and, likely having esoteric conversations centered in academia while listening to the coffee house jazz in the background - while the staff (out of NYC coffee shop Central Casting) does an amazing job making sure everyone is cared for. There is a polite shelf of imported dried pasta and basic trimmings for sale, as well as a cold case of traditional salads and alike. The sandwiches were very good. The staff was welcoming, attentive, and polite. I will absolutely be back. But with an understanding this very good business is a sandwich and coffee shop - not a traditional deli and I should, therefore, manage my own expectations. read more

Great little deli in the heart of town. Large portions and service was fast. Seating is limited for eating in.

I came in yesterday and will return for the fried artichoke sandwich. It was sublime- the perfect combination of flavors. I loved it and dream of the next one. The bread is the key to the sandwiches here- it is delicious- a delightful combination of crusty and chewy. My husband enjoys the Italian combo. I feel the prices were commensurate with the value and quality of the food received. read more

It has improved since it first opened - the first sandwich someone picked up for me from Petraroia was small. Their bread was very hard. But coming in more recently, it seems quality has improved. The bread was soft, and the chicken, bacon, and avocado were all fresh. The service was friendly, even though I came in half an hour before closing and things were being cleaned for the day. There is some indoor and outdoor seating, and a water bowl for canine passersby. There are also some grocery products available - noodles, cheeses, drinks... You could make a good meal with what was available for sale. Of course there are chips for sandwiches. Parking is the biggest issue because it's on the Litchfield Green. A Caprese Sandwich is simple, and because of that, the few ingredients have to be fantastic. Unfortunately, this Caprese just didn't meet the par. I had to remove the tomatoes completely from the sandwich as they weren't red and juicy, but rather hard and tasteless. The bread is probably fantastic fresh. First time here. Very bright, clean and inviting. Simple sandwich menu, but not simple sandwiches. There are some nice twists and new ideas, as well. I had the Eggplant sub (or whole, as they call it). It came on a very fresh and soft roll with lightly breaded eggplant, roasted red peppers, broccoli raab, fresh mozzarella and a delicious garlic aioli that just brought it all together. The fingerprint cookie was very good. The chocolate chip cookie was good, but needed a touch of salt. We sat to eat while waiting for additional take out sandwiches, which were brought out to us at our table by the friendly, but somewhat overwhelmed staff. Great grinders! Not much more to say. Service is great, nice people working...........

The sandwiches were good, but the portions were a bit of a let down after viewing previous photos on Yelp. Multiple photos of the chicken cutlet sandwich showed the chicken double stacked and filling out the roll, whereas I had one extremely thin cutlet and way more bread and arugula than chicken. Again, it was tasty, but level set your expectations that you may get a hearty sandwich or you may not. I personally don't like too much bread, I would have preferred more chicken to balance the bread to filling ratio. Also my husband's cordon bleu didn't have enough mustard, it was spotty and some sections had none at all. But with the line a mile long, there was no going back to ask for more. They were very nice and the quality of the food was excellent. They just need to work on consistency, because the sandwich that I got wasn't worth $10, while the other one from the other photo definitely was. They were very busy when we went, so maybe they are cutting corners. I did hear them say later they ran out of bread. So maybe on busy days they cut portions to feed more people? But then that's not fair to charge the same prices if that's what they're doing. I'll give them another try to see what they offer next time! read more

It's called a deli, but from the moment you walk in and smell the basil and fresh marinara sauce, you know deli is not the correct name. Had a turkey club and my wife the pesto sandwich. Bread is the key, delicious ingredient. Everyone working there is polite and efficient. Line moves quickly. Seating inside and a few tables on the sidewalk. The decor was so classic, I loved it. Everything was very clean inside and the staff was extremely friendly. They have tons of grab and go items in their fridge, and unique brands of pastas, sauces, spreads, etc on shelves against the wall. We ordered the chicken cutlet and the Italian sub. Both had very good flavor, however, I was a little sad they lacked in size. The meat was laid flat instead of folded and/or maybe there just wasn't a lot on there.. the grinder could have been a little thicker is all. I still plan to support this deli and see how some of their other sandwiches/grinders compare. I can't wait to come back I think they will do great in Litchfield. read more

My first time at this deli. It's well staffed, clean, has lots of food to select. Sandwiches are kind of expensive (over $10) so I just went with a simple egg and cheese on a hard roll. It ran $5.50 plus tax, but it was quite large. It certainly filled me up. I swear it was an ostrich egg, and the roll was rectangular and beefy. I will definitely return to explore. I just didn't have the time to really dig in and engorge myself. Next time (hah). read more

What a beautiful new delicatessen in the heart of the Litchfield green! A variety of sandwiches, grab and go salads, cut up fruit, cookies, and more! We stopped in on a weekend afternoon. They were busy but they are very efficient so we didn't need to wait long to place an order and find a place to sit. We ordered a Cubano sandwich and a salad with chicken on the side. Delicious!! There is not one thing I'd change about either of these items. The Cubano had amazing flavor! My salad was fresh, perfect ingredients for a hearty salad- and the chicken was flavorful and warmed up which I love. We also got a few chocolate chip cookies and those were really yummy as well. Litchfield family, my mom was born and raised, we have seen many businesses in this spot in town over the last 60 years. I have memories of a different deli when I was little! Nothing ever seemed to stick... until now. We are so happy the deli is here, and so happy they always seem busy. The food is wonderful. Our favorites are the meatball parm sub and the Buffalo chicken sub. Very cool beverage selection-- the yuzu soda is great! Their tuna and egg salads (in the to-go section) make lunches at home easy. The staff is friendly and courteous. I've eaten there about 3x/week this summer! Thank you For cutting up chicken breast for my toddler-- you guys are his favorite, too! Xx read more

In a town full of unfriendly places, this place has got to be the worst. No one who works there ever smiles, the people at the counter look at customers like they are inconveniencing them, they never say thank you, just "no problem" if they say anything at all. It wouldn't matter so much if you weren't paying like 15 bucks for a sandwich and if a %20 tip weren't suggested on the tablet when you pay with a card. read more

Wish I could recommend this restaurant the food looks really good. Absolutely the worst service today. Ordered by phone which is recommended and was told 20 mins. I left extra time and arrived about 40 minutes after ordering. Was told while paying my order was still not quite ready. I then observed the cashier go and hand them my order to make because it had not been turned over to the chefs. I went and asked if that indeed was happening and yes he'd never given our order. My wife and I visited Petraroia deli last Saturday and throughly enjoyed our grinders we got. I got the Italian combo and it was one of the best I've ever ate. The bread was fresh, the cold cuts were cut fresh and the condiments were perfect. My wife got the chicken combo and said it was also one of the best she ever had. Came here twice while visiting Lichfield. The sandwiches are excellent. Both times I got the buffalo chicken sandwich so I suppose that is all I can speak to, but my wife also loved her sandwich was well. Mine was a good sized sandwich that was just so tasty. It's a hip, trendy spot with great food at a reasonable price. If you're in the area and feel like a sandwich, you can't do better. read more

Tasty Italian delicatessen on the green in Litchfield that has been opened for a couple weeks now. Nice spacious clean atmosphere with plenty of seating perfect for remote working too! The chicken cutlet is thin, breaded and perfectly seasoned. The grinder rolls are also delicious, soft and springy without adding too much bread to the grinder. It perfectly complements and showcases the filling! A little pricey but what isn't at this point. I think the quality of ingredients and the care put into the product justifies the price for me. The pasta salad is traditional but much better than the usual IMO. There are plenty of snacks, beverages and prepared items as well. I can see getting together with friends for a casual but tasty lunch here. Staff is friendly and quite organized as you can see right into the kitchen/prep area. Don't want to sit inside? One of the best Italian combos I've had in a while. Most deli's just use ham and salami, here they used Proscuitto di Parma, Mortadella, Capicolla and salami. The bread was phenomenal, airy with a nice crust. Not doughy and filling. I will definitely be back to try some other sandwiches and definitely coming here when I need a Italian combo fix! read more
