Rick Steves tested and approved, Petra House B&B provides one of the best Bed and Breakfast experiences you're likely to encounter in Ireland.
One of the first things you'll notice driving up College Road is that there are A LOT of B&Bs on this road. In Galway, there's a lot of B&Bs everywhere, so my girlfriend and I relied on our old travel buddy Rick Steves to provide a recommendation. We decided to spring for Petra House B&B, priced somewhere in the middle of all the other B&Bs in this part of Galway. The owners, Joan & Frank Maher, live on site and are very formal and accommodating to guests. The only way to reserve a room is to email asking for a reservation, then providing you credit card over the phone or, more likely, over email. A little silly in the modern age, but it's all legit. The B&B is very posh in the best way possible (a little grandmother's house with a lot of knick-knacks), although you should probably avoid booking if you have small children. The rooms are large, modern and very comfortable, with large beds, private bathrooms and TV. Limited parking is available - if the spaces are all filled, there is plenty of inexpensive parking along the roads.
But what Petra House is most known for are the breakfasts. My girlfriend and I stayed here two nights and had excellent breakfasts both days. It's made to order and you can choose from a variety of tasty options, including eggs, sausages, all kinds of potatoes, ham, and smoked salmon, in addition to regular items of oatmeal, fruit, and the like. Whatever you order, you're going to get a lot of it, and it's so tasty you'll try to eat it all. You get plenty of value for your money.
Petra House has the best breakfast of any B&B we stayed at in Ireland. The B&B has everything going for it, but could use an online portal instead of sending out credit card information over email or making a long distance call. But if you decide to stay you'll have one of the best B&B experiences and certainly one of the best breakfasts. read more
