NOT THE PUPPY'S FAULT I am very concerned about the standard of care Petland's puppies receive. I dropped by to see if they had any yellow labs or goldens, they did. They had a yellow lab boy between 10-12 weeks old. I looked at him and thought, okay sweet. I know what puppies this age are like--they are curious, energetic, and TEETHING. For their own safety and comfort they need to have something to chew on at all times. They're a lot to handle at this age but I've done it before. They offered to let me sit with him in one of their visiting stalls. First red flag was they picked him up and brought him into the stall with nothing. No toy, no leash, nothing to occupy him while he worked through his excitement. First two minutes were rough, he immediately started nipping at my ankles and hands, then backing up and pouncing on my arms. I did my best to calmly redirect him but it was no use. Poor thing was desperate to bite into something. So I called for help, no one answers. I then crawled up on the bench and decided to grab my keys & cheap little wallet attachment and take all my cards out so I could throw him my empty wallet to chew on till we got a toy for him. I managed to get someone's attention and they brought him a small plastic chew toy. That occupied him for a good 2 minutes. While he was chewing I looked myself over, there were claw marks all over me and I realized his nails on his paw had not been filed or clipped in a VERY long time. They were sharp as nails and starting to curve back inward toward his foot. He was just playing around with me, but with his nails like that, it was like having a toddler run around with knives strapped to his hands, just inherently dangerous. I stayed a little while longer because I was still(!) interested in this sweet boy but he got bored of his chew toy pretty quick and remembered how fun it was to pounce and nip at me. So he went into hardcore play-fighting mode, started chomping at my hands and arms. Clawing at my face--at one point he knocked my glasses off my face and across the room and I couldn't see him well anymore. All the while I was yelling, calling for help from an attendant. I couldn't leave the visiting stall without being let out. I was disoriented, couldn't move because I didn't want to step on my glasses, and at that point bleeding in several places from scratches that drew blood. The more I tried to contain him and hold him down the harder he fought back and the harder he bit down. I loudly called for help 3 times before he bit my wrist so hard he broke straight through the skin and came out the other side. It hurt and shocked me so much I yelled out an explicative and only then did someone come check on us. At that point I was sobbing, hyperventilating, bleeding, with my ponytail pulled out and my glasses gone. I wasn't crying from the pain as much as the frustration and worry I felt about how they'd react to the dog. I kept saying it wasn't his fault as they led me to the bathroom to get cleaned up. Moral of the story: These guys have no idea what they're doing caring for these dogs. This whole situation could've been prevented with some basic preparation: a leash, a puppy-friendly toy, some nail care, ample exercise/play time to regulate his energy, and adequate supervision of the visiting stalls. I still feel bad for the poor pup but it was an awful experience and I won't be coming back.

So Petland recently opened in Memphis much to the dismay of plenty of people, but I won't get into that as I feel its rude to discuss politics in mixed company, lol. Anyways I was out and about one day and saw the newly minted Petland nestled snuggly in the corner on the side of Home Depot, seeing that I just love, love, love puppies, I had to stop in. The building was very well lit and neatly set up, and immediately reminded me of the old Pet stores in the now closed Mall of Memphis back in the day, lol, showing my aging. The puppies were set up behind glass enclosures and there is also an area where perspective buyers can meet, greet and handle the puppies to get a glimpse of their personalities and behavior and compatibility. They of course did not have every breed of puppy, but their selection seemed to be very well planned as they had a very good selection of puppies, there were American bulldogs, schnauzers, miniature Pinschers, French Bulldogs and other very adorable fluffy pooches, cuteness overload!!. Having wanted a since puppy forever, I inquired about the prices of these adorable pooches, I was told they ranged from 2K to 10K!!!!, talk about sticker shock!!, as much as I love puppies I could not in good conscience buy a puppy for that much, I would rather have a mutt from the shelter. However to each his own, if your looking to add a new addition to your family and a hole in your wallet, be sure and visit the new Petland in Memphis.

I recently got a Mini Aussie puppy from this establishment. He was originally from a breeder and…read morewas sold to the store. I called and set up a meeting with the puppy before making my decision. DO NOT be fooled by the niceness of the staff!! Over the phone they mentioned that the puppy was going to be between $1,500 and $2,000, with monthly payments. after I had gotten there and been playing and loving on the puppy for over two hours they told me he was going to cost $3,600 with monthly payments of $100, which is an EXTEME difference to what they told me over the phone. They had me fill out an online form, without telling what I was filling out. the whole time i though i was filling out a form to be approved to take the dog home. Proof of income, Proof of housing, ect. in reality, I was filling out an application FOR A LOAN. No one made it aware to me that i was applying for a loan and by the time i submitted the form it was too late. I didn't figure out it was a loan until i complemented the working helping me how it was good they make everyone fill out those forms. Then he informed me that yes everyone has to fill those out to be approved for the loan. i said "loan?". I have the puppy at home now and was doing research on his lineage when i found out the the breeder he came from was not only being bashed on the internet for mistreatment, changed their name to avoid bad press, but were also selling these puppies for $500. Puppy dreams added another $3,000 to his cost. I am extremely pissed off how badly they ripped me off. I genuinely feel bad for the puppies that are still in that place, and for the people going their to find their best friend for life but instead they get deceived and taken advantage of. I am a 20 Y/O college girl who was looking for a dog to help with my mental health and anxiety; they knew that and still decided to rip me off. I am so ashamed of not only them but of myself for trusting the very "nice" guy helping me through the process.

I brought this to the attention of the clerk and he also called the owner by phone. I wanted the lower ticketed price. He refused stating it was not the price in the computer. The owner refused because it was stated "they changed the prices by hand and it was a mistake." I stated "this was not my fault." I wanted the item for the price ON THE TICKET. The clerk argued with me and stated other retail stores would agree with their position. I stated to the contrary, I too was a former store owner and if this situation was in my store I would have to give the customer the lower ticketed price. The clerk stated (in front of another customer I might add) "I rest my case." You USE to own a store. Before exiting the store I stated "it was a shame that they were willing to lose a repeat customer over a dollar!" To add insult to injury, the clerk degraded a customer in front of another customer. Believe me, I will tell everybody I know the poor customer service I received and I would never recommend them! All over a dollar, I hope that sale was worth it!
