I love taking my daughter here to see all the puppies, rabbits, and fish! It use to be a mess around the store, however, I have seen a lot of changes lately and it seems a lot more organized! In regards to the prices, I feel they are overpriced on the puppies! You can do a payment plan, but you are definitely spending too much. They do however take care of a lot of the medical needs of the puppies so that is a plus. As always, I would recommend looking online or at your local shelters for dogs that need a good home! read more

I shopped petland Joplin MO Saturday April 8,23. I ask for crickets and superworms. They only had large crickets so I only got 50. I paid $.25 each and half were dead. I ask for the superworms and the container said it had 50. I ask the employee twice if there were actually 59 worms Both time she assured me there were 50. I got home and counted there were only 23 and they were the size of a straight pin and smaller and they called them superworms. I have bought hundreds of super worms and NEVER had I seen something so small you couldn't event out them on a hook for fishing read more

So I called and the associate said she could not give me pricing over the phone because she wasn't a manager which is always super sketchy. She scheduled me a reservation to come see the puppy without asking me if I wanted her to do that and said at that point they'd give me the pricing after I visited with the puppy in their play rooms and said I would have to call to cancel if I couldn't make it...I wasn't going to come in without knowing the price and since I didn't ask for a reservation I'm not calling to cancel. If you don't have a price listed for every pet in your store and you need to see me in person to size me up before giving me the price you think I'll be willing to pay, I'll just buy direct from a breeder. Petland is nothing more than a legal expensive puppy mill. My wife received a Dachshund puppy as a gift. Puppy was very ill with pneumonia, and was under weight. Ribs and back bones showing. Took puppy to their contracted vet next door. Didn't like their practices and or attitudes. Ended up taking puppy to emergency hospital, otherwise may not have survived. Petland did reimburse for 1/2 the hospital cost. Found another great vet, that has helped nurse our little one back to health. When asked for reimbursement was turned down flat. Took 3 months, and $1,000's out of pocket, to cure pneumonia, and put on 8 lbs. Puppy also was younger than they stated to us. Sophia is now a healthy and happy family member and has our 3 other dogs as friends and playmates. Looked at it as an expensive rescue, as she surely would not have survived at Petland. Petland needs investigated and shut down. Lesson learned. read more

Petland is always fun. They are more than happy to let you play with the puppies in areas that are made just for that and are clean, even after you tell them your not buying a dog. Our girls love to go there and play with the puppies. Of course what children wouldn't. Staff is very friendly and it's kept nice and clean. They have a good variety of pet foods and toys but are a little pricier than their local competitors. Price is the only reason they get 4 instead of 5 stars. read more

Where do I begin? I was here a year ago and bought a dog only to find out that the dog was malnourished, had worms and didnt have all its shots. When I approached them abt this issue they said that there was no refunds. They didn't offer any warranty or anything on this pet. They lied saying the dog was up to date on shots. It is truly outstanding how poor and unprofessional the customer service is at Petland in Joplin. Today, I called the store to ask a question. When I called, an employee answered the phone with "Hello?" As I am usually met with a greeting and an announcement of the business establishment, I assumed I had the wrong number, but I responded, "Hello, is this Petland?" The employee responded to me, "Is this Cassandra?" I replied, "No, this is not Cassandra" (and I was shocked that an employee would lack such etiquette). The employee then replied, "Oh, okay, never mind then, what can I help you with?" For the second time, I asked again, "Is this Petland?" as I still was not yet informed if this was the correct business that I had contacted. I recently rescued a pair of a pair of ferrets and went to Petland to purchase a small animal water bottle for them. When I had come home I noticed the ferrets were having a hard time getting water out, I tried getting the water out myself and even I couldn't get the water to drip. After I realized this, I took it back to Petland and told cashier at the time that It wasn't working right after we bought it and ask for a refund. Even though I had the receipt and the item, they refused to take it back. I proceeded to tell him that the item had no use for my animals, and I wanted a refund, but he still refused. Recently, I came into Petland to buy items for a cat that I had just gotten and the guy who helped me was very nice and did help me find all the items I needed. Unfortunately, my cat died the very next day and I went back to return the items. When I got there I informed the staff at the register (the very same one who had helped me the day before) that I didn't have the receipt, but that I had my card I used and all the items. He informed me that he couldn't do anything for me even though I was crying in the middle of the store explaining that my kitten had just died and I had no need for the items. AND after I had searched my purse and my car for the receipt. Called the next day, the manager said she would give me a call right back. I called her an hour later and she said there was nothing they could do not even scan my items or look up my credit card number. After three phone calls and two trips back to the store I finally (with attitude from staff) got my money back. I would have not given any stars but then it wouldn't let me type anything!! We bought a puppy from Petland in Joplin on September 8, 2018. They encouraged us to purchase the pet insurance because they said you never know when you will need it. Well, a month later, the collar that we had purchased from the store broke and he got to the road and was hit. He didn't make it. We called to see what we needed to do. We had to take him in so he could have an autopsy. The insurance we purchased, we were told, would replace the puppy that we had lost. Over the past 13 months, the store has NEVER reached out to us. We have been the ones that make every single phone call. We get nowhere!!! We must have really good timing because every time we call, the owners are not available! They apparently go on many trips! At first they would call us back and tell us that they were reaching out to their suppliers but now have gotten to where they don't even return our calls. We have been nice, we have not been so nice..... nothing helps! We have even tried going over their heads since Petland is such a huge company. Little did we know that each franchise stands alone and has nothing to do with each other!!!!! I would never recommend purchasing a pet from this store! read more

I will never buy another dog here again. In 2012 I purchased an OES from Petland. A week into my ownership I discover that he is deaf. I contact the store manager and ask if I can be refunded or exchange him for a non defective product. I am asked if I purchased the warranty. I say 'No, because it was suggested by the employee that I shouldn't need it because they very rarely have issues with their animals. Obviously this was one of those rare circumstances. The manager I was speaking to simply said 'Sorry.' And that was the end of the conversation. So in short I paid full price (probably even more than what an OES should cost) and received a completely defective product. The manager did say that I could use my free vet checkup and they could do tests to see if he was in fact deaf and they could offer me some guidance in owning a deaf dog. No type of monetary reimbursement though. The "test" the used to determine if he was deaf was to bang some pots and pans together and see how he reacted. Worthless. So if you really have your heart set on purchasing an animal from here be sure and buy the warranty. But I wouldn't recommended purchasing an animal from here with such pathetic business morals. read more

The store is decent but this company has gotten in trouble before for getting puppies from puppy mill situations. 500 for a dog is ridiculous when there is one who needs a home at a shelter that you could adopt for no more than 100. The cages for the puppies were fairly small and most of the dogs didn't look all that happy. I'll stick with adoption events at stores like petsmart or going to a shelter to adopt. read more

A breeder will offer a two year guarantee on their puppy and you see the mom/dad on site so there's no question about breed. Recent puppy purchase has turned disastrous. First of all, if I could give this place zero stars, I would. They not only get their pets from absolutely horrible places like puppy mills, rodent mills, ferret mills, and pretty much every other kind of animal mill out there, but they treat their pets horribly. I've seen a lady cleaning the puppy cages and spraying the glass with cleaner, and while she was wiping it off, her arm proceeded to hit one of the dogs in the cage. Granted, it seemed to be an accident, but she looked very unapologetic and unsurprised in general. This wouldn't have been too bad, but then she continued to leave the top cage door open, with dogs inside, and physically stepped away from the cage leaving the puppies at risk of falling out from that dangerous height. They also keep their bettas in horrible, small bowls or cups, some dead or dying, and sell their ferrets way too young when they should still be with their mothers. And on top of all this, they have some pretty rude employees who won't refund brand new items without a fight from the customer who just wants their money back. And finally, they give horrible advice to people buying pets. Please don't support them or the animal mills that supply them, and don't take their advice when it comes to getting a new pet. Do your own research and rescue pets that actually need homes. read more

Do not shop at Petland in Joplin. For one thing, their prices are twice as high as Petsmart which is just down the street. That is why I never buy any of my food, bedding, etc at Petland. And their manager looks like a teenager and doesn't care about pleasing the customer. I bought a second rat there today. I was not asked if I wanted a male or female, and we were not able to choose our pet. When we bought the first rat in January, it was a sweet girl working there and she brought several out to choose from. I have a female and wanted another female. I was sold a male and brought it back within an hour. They would not take it back! And the manager was absolutely NO HELP! They have lost my business over a $7 rat. They say they will return a puppy within 48 hours, but can't take a rat back in less than an hour. That is insane! Well, I just tossed the box with the male rat in it on the floor and told them to keep it and I would give them a bad review. And then one of the associates was TAPING ME as I was driving off. So ridiculous! I never cussed, hit anyone or made any threats other than to give a bad review. The whole store is run by teens it looks like to me, and there is not a manager who is older and cares about keeping their customers happy. I would like to be positive but it's hard to when you deal with dishonest people. We purchased a puppy 13 months ago. We were told he wouldn't get no more than 4 lbs. He weighs 11 lbs.( considering we drove 2 hours and paid 1750$ for him.) So we got over that. Also purchased puppy for life extended care. Which is almost useless it does cover shots..but living 2 hours away and Making a appointment for simple care.we arrived and were told it would be later in the afternoon before he would be ready. We asked exactly how long it would take when we made the appointment.we were told 2 hrs for the care we were asking to get done. We get there the grooer told us there were 2 ahead and it would be later. She claimed she was unaware of our appointment. So we walk back next door to the desk and the lady has the odaisity to talk trash and we could hear her through the door. I will not be driving back for anything from there. I would have upped it to 4 stars, but the owner, who said he would clear his schedule to meet me at 1 o'clock, was not there at 1 when I showed up. Puppies here are way overpriced. They wanted to charge me $3300 for a Maltipoo. You can do a payment plan, but I've never heard of someone having to make monthly payments for 3 years on a dog, and he wasn't even able to be AKC registered because he was a mixed breed. I signed the papers and paid a deposit that night and wanted to pick up the puppy that next morning as I was staying in a hotel. I started thinking about it and realized I made a mistake. I went back the next morning and they tried to talk me into taking the dog. They even put me on the phone with the owner. I was told that I owed a 25% fee because I 'returned' the dog. I NEVER even took possession of the dog. I was told that they did me a favor by holding him 12 hours, all of which they were closed. She told me she would cancel the lease to do me a favor even though that was in the contract. Don't buy your dogs here, they jack up the price and try to justify it. It's not worth it. And don't sign any papers unless you're willing to make payments on the dog. read more

This store was awful to us, customer service was completely and utterly disappointing. When we went to look for our fur baby we were constantly watched and harassed by the sales rep there. Her name was Heidi I believe. We were never once left alone to discuss our options with purchasing this puppy. We also went looking for accessories for the puppy after purchasing him and Heidi continuously placed items in the shopping cart and I presumed to ask her if these items would be free and she would say "yes you will not be paying for any of these items" we kept walking through the store and she kept placing items in the cart and I continuously asked if these would be free and she continued to reassure me the items would not cost anything even in my disbelief I feel for her false truths. After we purchased the puppy and she rang up all of the items in the cart we still were skeptical about the situation at hand. We were not shown a receipt of all the items charged and we just believed they weren't. As we traveled back home we noticed we were charged $476. My girlfriend was completely unaware of these charges and was not made aware. She called Heidi and she exclaimed that we could not return any of the items because we "signed" a contract. I called her and told her we were going to report them and as I was doing so she called back and apologized and said we could return all of the items. When we went back we were treated with such disrespect and such horrible customer service. We will not be returning. read more

In 2013 I purchased a 4 month old female Golden Retriever. She came with a 4 generation pedigree and she was registered as UABR (united all breeds registry). I am a former employee of this establishment and we received no education on registrations or breeds or anything other than what we found in the breed books provided at the register. I quit shortly after the purchase of my dog. However I have always been suspicious because my parents have a Golden as well. Mine doesn't have the same build, snout, ears, feet or bark that my parent's Golden does. I did some digging and found out that 4 generation pedigree doesn't mean much considering "breeders" can make them up. I also found that UABR the registry that my Golden is with is pretty much a puppy mill registry! On the list I found it had a majority of the registries found at Petland to be puppy mill "breeder" registries! The only reason they get 1 star is because I have to leave one to post this. if i could give negative stars i would. their pet care is TERRIBLE. leopard geckos, african fat tails, and bearded dragons should NEVER be kept on sand, and definitely not babies, yet they always have them on sand. pac man frogs need very high humidity but their enclosure is always dry. they have a macaw that is in a cage with two perches and one rope- which, when i asked an employee if they had toys to put in with him, she said WAS his toy. birds need SEVERAL perches of different sizes so they dont develop arthritis in in their feet. they will become depressed and angry if not provided with enrichment thats more than a single f*cking rope! i have three birds that have tons of toys and perches and they STILL could benefit from even more! every time i go in i hope theyve improved, but its very obvious they dont care about their animals at all and only the money they can make off of them. i work at a pet store as well, so i know that you cant provide the perfect, ideal environment for animals, but its like they arent even making an effort to keep the animals healthy and happy. i dont even want to think about what condition their feeder rats and mice are, since they arent visible to the customers. i understand that if youre in a pinch and they are the only store that has something you desperately need (which is why i was there) youll have no choice but to shop there. but i HIGHLY recommend going somewhere else for things that arent an absolute necessity. this compay neglects their animals and keeps them in terrible conditions, and buying things from them will only allow them to stay in business longer. read more
