I can't say enough good things about this place. We ONLY trust Pete's for our multiple aquariums. From fresh water feeders to beautiful arrays of corals, Pete has it all. I've never seen healthier fish for sale locally. The staff is filled with knowledge and really strive to help you build the perfect aquarium. It's very obvious the fish come first. Thanks to Pete's wonderful help and Stock, we have 4 thriving tanks filled with an array of salt and fresh water fish. We wouldn't dare risk our aquariums with anything other then Pete's fish/corals. I ordered a large Caribbean Octopus 10" to 12" to be shipped, what I got was a Day Octopus the size of a half dollar! I live in Florida and know what a Caribbean reef octopus is supposed to look like! What a waste of money and for the big lies! I will never buy from them again! read more

I started my saltwater tank a few months ago and was underwhelmed with Petco/PetSmart as somewhere to go for fish. I found Pete's aquarium which is about 45 minutes from my house but SO worth it. They have an amazing selection of fish that are exceptionally cared for. You can tell that everyone who works in there is incredibly knowledgeable. Not only that, but they're super helpful and friendly, and truly care about the fish. I've been there twice now and the second time I walked in they remembered me, what size tank I have, and what fish I have! They tested my water for me and pointed me in the direction of what fish would be suitable for my tank. Love this place! Also, make sure so say hi to Buddy in the back corner. read more

So I stopped here on Tuesday and they weren't open when I arrived, but their sign said they would be open soon, so I stuck around. 15 minutes after they were supposed to open, still no one. So I sent an email. " As I sit here in front of the door I am confused as to if this business is still in operation. The phone number on the windows is not in service. The hours listed on the door are seemingly incorrect. (It's quarter after 12 on Tuesday, should be open but not.) The windows and door are dirty with evaporated salt water and smudges. The only ray of hope is the two containers of fish food on the window sill. Would love to know your actual hours of business and contact information." The email I received back was simply we should be reopening next week. I really can't believe it. I suppose I have to return, since Albany is just too far for me to go for fish and Petsmart doesn't have the selection I crave. I hope I can write a positive review next time. read more

I have never been to the store but from some reviews I read it must be in big demand because the only complaints were related to open hours during the covid 19 pandemic. I rate this store with the highest rating (5 STAR) because of the personal touch with the owner Pete (whom I have never personally met). Any time I am looking for a marine fish , he has it and will even ship to me for Saturday delivery, because of my busy schedule thru the week. I live in Baltimore and prefer Pete,s Aquarium over all of my local shops because of the elite service before and after the sale. All the Marine fish I have received from Pete have been 5 stars and usually bigger than what I purchased which is unheard of now days! I have been a customer for over a year and have received all healthy and eating well fish and the prices are much lower than here in Baltimore for sure. I say just give Pete,s Aquarium a chance and they won't let you down. As far as hours at the store , I would call before I go now days because alot of stores are on crazy schedules right now because of Mr Corona. Its safer to order on line anyway and his shipping is cheaper than anyone else in the industry and free if you order like I do $$$$. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Quality fish store with exceptionally nice staff!!! Can't wait to go back!!! They have a wide assortment of fish, mostly saltwater, but a good amount of freshwater too. I got a Bristlenose Pleco and a snail from them, and both are still happy and healthy a few months later. read more

Had to wait 20 minutes for saltwater to be made. I brought my own buckets, simply for 10 gallons of water they charged me $40. Absolutely insane. Everywhere else it is about $1.50 a gallon. Complete rip off. Definitely will not be returning. The store is also empty. No merchandise to even buy. Also to add, used the water for a water change and discovered the saltwater wasnt even mixed properly. Still a very milky couldy color. read more

Went into the store last week in August to place a custom order for a fish tank we needed for a trade show. We needed it for the first week in October and were told no problem it would be in the the following Friday and they would call us once received. Never head anything so called the following Tuesday and was told on the phone they weren't sure if the goods came in and someone would check and call back later that afternoon. Never got a call. Tried again calling again the end of the week and never got anyone to pick up! Kept calling to no avail and their voice mail is full. I have sent emails and also reached out to their facebook page but no one answered! What gives! Well I will notify them here that our special order is canceled and we ordered from another place! I can't believe they wouldn't even get back to us! On another note something that turned me off when I went into the store: When I walked in I was going through option with the sales man when the phone rang. He picked up the phone and continued to have a full conversation with the person on the phone about different tank options. Personally I think a person who is psychically in the store should be given priority and not be kept waiting 5 minutes for someone who is just calling in! read more

They seemed to be more mindful of the care and presentation of their salt water fish but this not a good place for fresh water tropical fish. Tanks were dirty and lots of dead fish being munched on by tank mates. Worst of all are the RIDICULOUS prices. 4 or 5 times higher than anywhere else. Average cichlids that you'd typically buy for $7 to $10 were priced in the $20 to $30 range. At these prices the quality should be exceptional. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. I would be afraid to add these fish to an existing tank and risk fungal diseases. read more

I wanted to get back into having fish. I came here looking for a local fish store rather then going to a big corporation pet supplier. I wanted to get fish that are taken care of rather then sold in bulk. When you walk in you meet a guy named Andrew. This guys is extremely knowledgable on fish care and will take the time to answer all your questions. I come in with my son and he has tons of questions! When you look around the store, you will find that the fish are very well taken care of and the fish are healthy. This is welcoming new because I just came from the PetCo in Poughkeepsie and the fish had ick! My only complaint is, I would like to see a larger on hand supply of freshwater fish. However, if you are looking for a fish, they will order it for you. They do have a big selection of salt water fish. I highly reccomend coming here for all your fish care needs. read more

I've also called at least as many times and only gotten the answering machine, and sent an email with no response. I'd love to go to a small business instead of Petco, which has the largest selection in the area (but fairly poor quality--so many fish with fungal infections!), but it appears River and Reef is no longer an alternative. read more

As other reviews have noted, there is a lack of local aquatic stores in the area. The website looked promising, so we drove out. Will never go back - the tanks throughout the store were in very poor condition, many with dead fish (some of which had been dead for some time). Other tanks had fish breathing at the top or laying at the bottom - not distributed throughout the strata of the tank. The tanks themselves were barren, no habitat of any sort provided for the fish. We found this surprising, given the size and expense of some of the salt water specimens. Although the site advertises that they have a good selection of freshwater tropicals, we found only a few specimens, and would not consider buying from those tanks. We will not visit here again. read more

Stopped during the posted hours on a Thursday, the sign on the door says be back in 10 minutes. Wait 30 still no one to be found. There's a lack of local fish places in the area and unfortunately I can see why... hard to have customers or even repeat customers if your place is not open during the posted hours. Puts a bad taste in people's mouths. Honestly it was frustrating seeing as I drove some distance hoping to find quality fish. read more
