Just don't expect anything on the scale of a Salvation Army or Savers where you can go crazy. That said, I stopped in recently and found a nice paisley shirt and an old suitcase. Unfortunately however, the paisley shirt was way too small and will never fit me and my girlfriend said she would move out if I brought home another ratty old suitcase. I ended up buying the paisley shirt anyway but decided to leave the suitcase behind. It was a big brown Samsonite, and I wanted it. But it wasn't the hill to die on. Either way, I will continue to check in from time to time as this place could definitely yield an excellent thrift store haul if you hit it on the right day.

My first negative review of this great little shop. It's very cluttered but you can find some…read moretreasures, I've been stopping in there for 24 years. The employees are always nice. Today, I dropped off a small donation, and decided to look around as usual. There were two people outside the store looking over two bins of books, really nice ones, some classics. We had a nice discussion about authors, books we've read. One customer was helping another, and suggested to one employee that she could price them per box. So she stated that they go for a dollar ea. Okay, but then she changed her mind and offered $10 for two big bins instead. Ok, so the other customer said she was glad to donate them & take the $10. She didn't want to throw them out. Another customer began picking out rejected books from the garbage bin. The employee was really annoyed and stated that we are not allowed to take things out of the garbage bin. Really???? So you're going to fill up the landfill with things that could be reused. I entered the store, and this employee was arguing very loudly with the one customer who was helping the other one. The customer did not raise a voice - the rest of us looked at each other, it was embarrassing. That employee should have handled it better. Calmly repeat your store policy, or say that you cannot accept a donation for whatever reason, nicely, politely. That you take in donations and price them for sale. She was so unpleasant, I felt sorry for the customer and the rest of us. Perhaps your little store is too crowded? Think of donating books to a Veterans organization. Be polite! There is no reason to be nasty just because you are feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, perhaps not enough help in the shop. It was very uncomfortable, so I walked out.

Total win. This spot is thrift chaos in the best way. Mostly clothes for women and men, shoes for just about every occasion, accessories, costume jewelry, random home finds and even some small furniture pieces if you're lucky. And the prices are super reasonable. As a heads up: this isn't your airy, Pinterest-perfect thrift shop. The racks are tight, the aisles are tight and the shelves are tighter. All good though. But one wrong move reaching for a ceramic piece and you might knock something- so shop carefully. What's you're also getting is a friendly owner and not someone who's brushing you off. I haven't bought any clothing yet, but the accessories and home pieces I've grabbed are absolute steals and they got their spots in my new space.

Aww...I am just going to take a moment to reminisce about Second Hand Rose, my absolute favorite…read moreplace to purchase previously loved items in Poughkeepsie and surrounding areas. Depending on the frequency of your visit you are bound to find at least one commodity you adore that can be added to your closet; maybe even two, but doubtfully more then that. Whatever you choose will likely be in excellent shape and at a garage sell price that nobody is able to disapprove of. During my first visit here I bought a black peacoat that kept me fashionably warm during winter...$4. I returned the following January and acquired another nice coat for only $5. One time my friend walked out with a $5, 3-piece suit, amazing! You almost feel like you're stealing, but you're not and I am sure if you sincerely cannot pay for something you desire or need that Second Hand will make arrangements for you to take it home. Second Hand Rose is good for more then just clothing. Stuffed animals, photo frames, pins, and the only shop I know of where you can pay 5 cents for hotel soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. I once purchased an old school fondue set for roughly $6, which I still have today. It might also be somewhere to scout out "cash in the attic" sort of stuff if that is what you're into that. The shop is small, yet clean and uncluttered; managed by sweet, little ol' Methodist church ladies who volunteer their time to the community. They kindly pack your purchases in donated department store bags so you get the feeling as if you just bought something from H&M or Gap and you are able to skip happily on with the rest of your day a little bit more optimistic about the world around you. Additional Information about Second Hand Rose: -No Cell Phones. Random I know, but I suppose since it is such a small shop that ringing and loud talking would undoubtedly disturb the other customers (fine by me, I don't need to know what you need to pick up from the store before getting home). -Cash only. For real, otherwise you have to go to the ATM located around the corner. Inconvenient, not to mention that $2+ fee. -If you cannot find street parking, use Kennedy Fried Chicken's private lot located a measly couple of stores away, but don't forget to lock your doors. -Although there was only once I went and it wasn't open, check the hours of operation before making the trip, as they are limited. -This store is not about making money, it is about letting the people of Poughkeepsie know that they are loved. The owners of this store and the volunteers who run it are true servants to the community, make sure to support them if you are able, especially if you enjoy thrift store shopping.

Their products are well tagged with prices, and service is good. Check this place out, before deciding on purchasing elsewhere(to make sure you've exhausted your search). Even for those who end up in Northern Dutchess Hospital and who have lost most of their clothes from car accidents or whatever, this store might even have some type of product to get you back on your feet at good prices, until you can get back on your feet again). No inside hallway connection between the hospital and this thrift shop exists, so walking between these two seems to be unconvincing. A person will either get hypothermic walking here, or become scorched from the hot sun walking here from the hospital). From the name, however, I wonder what percentage of the sales price the hospital takes in on money? This place doesn't look like it's been ever improved in a dozen or so years.
