A dear friend of mine recently moved from Toronto to Peterborough. She let me know about the Peterborough Veg Fest. I thought that it would be perfect to come visit her and check out the festival.
I didn't realize that this year was the inaugural year for the festival. We parked a few blocks away and walked over to Millennium Park where the festival was held.
The park is beautiful. You can canoe and simply relax. My friend was telling me that many free concerts happen here in the summer. Cool!
There were plenty of food vendors. We needed lunch, so we hit Pierogi. I got four perogies for $6. Two perogies had portobello mushrooms and vegan cheddar cheese. The other two had sun-dried tomatoes, potatoes, and cheddar vegan cheese.
I love perogies. I like dumplings from anywhere, really! However, my love for them happened in Winnipeg, where they were plentiful. These perogies at the fest were fantastic. I personally have a fondness for portobello mushrooms, so I'm biased. So delicious!
My friend and I visited the Apiecalypse Now stand. The store is from Toronto. My friend got the Simpsons donut (yep, the animated show). I got vegan cereal milk marshmallows and a key lime pie slice. The marshmallows were too sweet. My friend and I shared a square. It's best to make hot chocolate that isn't sweet and add one of these marshmallows in. I loved the key lime pie. It was perfectly tart and sweet.
Naturally, I continued eating my way though the park. We both got Parmageddon, which is a tasty vegan version of parmesan. We tied it on some popcorn samples. You had me at popcorn! So good, especially for this borderline lactose-intolerant popcorn fan.
Of course, I came across another stand selling popcorn. I got the caramel version, which was really sweet and salty popcorn. The other was sea salt. It wasn't as yummy. I brought my $5 bag for my mom. I believe that my popcorn addiction came from her. It's hereditary.
There were non-food vendors, too. The most creative was Sola. The designer creates jewellery pieces that uses the Fibonacci sequence. I was blown away by her creativity and geekiness. After all, I was a mathematics minor during my undergraduate years. I took her card and I am eyeing getting a bracelet.
Nanashake recently followed my Instagram account. It also hails from Toronto. The lineup was long to get a pop with a banana base. I still endured and got a strawberry cheesecake pop as I exited the festival. It was delicious. I wasn't even halfway to my car from the park and I had polished it off!
The festival had free water and mugs. The mugs were being constantly washed to reduce waste. Nice idea!
The only negative part was the woman's washroom. My door didn't have a working lock. My friend held it for me. It also needed to be restocked with paper towel.
The festival ran pretty smoothly otherwise. It didn't appear to be its first run. It was a well-organized event. I'd love to come back again next year.
