My wife and I first met Dr. Peter Hwang a little over five years ago when he diagnosed and performed a surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in my wife's maxillary sinus. We knew he was and is a full professor at Stanford and the head of his department at the Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery unit. We were worried about her diagnosis but his experience and bed side manner gave us a lot of comfort and the end result was far better than we had hoped for. In May of this year my wife developed another complex situation that Dr. Hwang reviewed in his office and removed part of a blockage, then performed a complete surgery to remove the remainder. The quality of care at Stanford is unmatched. Dr. Hwang is incredible. I have HHT a very rare blood disease. His knowledge and manner of dealing with the issue and his advocating for the proper treatment of such was remarkable. I have had multiple surgeries, including the removal of turbinates in both nostrils. They can come back and I'm proof. This is a teaching facility. Not seeing Dr. Hwang has never been concerning. They have always been professional and their work extraordinary. As someone who has to drive 3 1/2 hours EACH WAY, I wouldn't hesitate to encourage others to come and see Dr. Hwang. If you have HHT, Dr. Hwang may be the answer he was to l for me. Fewer nosebleeds and better quality of life. Thank you, Dr. Hwang! I've spent 52 years having people look up my nose and pretend to know about HHT. I've been butchered by almost every single one EXCEPT Dr. Hwang. My wait was about 5 or 7 minutes in the waiting room and then 4-6 before I saw the assistant and a few more to see the assistant and Dr Hwang. The man advocates for patients with insurance companies! I have an HMO and I haven't paid anything. If you have an HMO and have ever needed a specialist who knows about an issue that only 5% of the world population has ever heard of/had, you'll know how rare it is to get your needs met as well as a doctor who will fight for you. I have always been informed this or that may not work and to be patient. My point, have patience and appreciate the work this man has dedicated his life to. Don't go to this doctor. If possible I would give this doctor 0 star. I feel pain on my right side of nose down to my teeth and have yellow-green discharge, I was told this doctor is No1 MD in bay area, so I took 4 month to get this doctor. In fact, it was his student to check my nose, spray some medicine and insert the camera. That student spray way too much medicine into my nose, after his check, I feel huge pain in my nose. They insisted that there is no infection. When I got home, I've been feeling pain on both side of nose and have breath problem now. I still have yellow-green discharge drop back to my throat. This is absolutely the worst experience in my life. You though this doctor would save your life , in face his student check almost everything and ruin your life. DO NOT GET SURGERY WITH DR. HWANG. I was having breathing issues on my right side and Dr. Hwang recommended an inferior turbinate reduction and limited septoplasty. As a result of the surgery, the airway on the right side is tighter than before and he removed too much cartilage in the septum and I have a vibration every time I speak and a whistle in my airway. It has ruined my quality of life. I had requested to do the turbinate surgery first and then assess the septum later but Dr. Hwang pressured me into doing both at once and said I can't make up my mind and need to stop wasting his time because it's his clinic and it's a business and people need to be seen and it needs to keep running. After expressing my concern about the last surgery, he told me it is just something I will have to cope with... Overall, not even sure I can call Dr. Hwang a doctor. Doctors are supposed to care about their patients and investigate and do whatever they can do to make sure things are better and resolved. Dr. Hwang just cares about training his assistants and fellows, and running his practice as the director. Feels like a big ego stroke. He isn't going to care for you as an individual patient. Plus, Dr. Hwang doesn't even perform your surgery. It is a fellow, who has been doing it for less than a year. So if you want to be the test dummy for a Stanford fellow, go ahead and give it a shot. not happy with the doc office as well as his assistant, 1st time wait for 1.5 hours and second time 50min. I have to raise my voice in order to be seen. Make me very unhappy was the 2nd time which less wait,but the assistant Jenn Wang who out there was not patient and saying " I am helping you save time" she asked questions, and I am sure I have to say that again to Dr Hwang again, happened. I had been sleeping with the aid of decongestants for most of my adult life. Add to that regular sinus infections at least once a year for the past 2 decades. Dr. Hwang cleaned up not only the breathing passages but also opened up the sinus cavities to reduce chance of sinus infection. I cannot recommend him or his staff of diligent doctors enough. Don't get surgery with Dr. Hwang. I'll start the review with an overview of my experience, and follow with some reasons not to get surgery with him. I underwent a turbinate reduction and septoplasty with Dr. Hwang in July 2014 to address chronic nasal congestion. Shortly afterwards, I noticed some symptoms in my left nasal passageway but thought nothing of it initially. By late 2014, I was experiencing excruciating pain, pressure, and congestion from that left side. When presenting my symptoms to Dr. Hwang, he responded defensively, claiming that everything looked fine and that the surgery had gone well. Fast forward a year later after obtaining the opinions of 7-8 different ENTs, I discovered a ENT who pinpointed the problem and has been treating me since. The last 4-5 years have been a slow grind for me - before meeting this current ENT, I experienced excruciating symptoms for a year. Throughout the last few years, my current ENT has performed an additional 10-15 procedures to ameliorate the symptoms I experienced after Dr. Hwang's surgery. Moving on to the reasons not to get surgery with Dr. Hwang. 1. I'm fairly certain he merely supervised the surgery, while a resident actually performed the surgery. I believe this is the case for a lot of hospitals affiliated with universities. I obtained a copy of my surgery record from Stanford, which seems to corroborate my theory. Essentially, you as the patient become the trial case for residents who are trying to complete their training. 2. As mentioned in my summary, he seems to care most about protecting his reputation than helping treat a patient who was experiencing severe symptoms after a surgery he supervised. When my post-surgery symptoms first became severe, I was desperate to pinpoint the problem. However, every time he checked my nasal passageway, he found no problems and was extremely defensive that the surgery went well. He didn't really seem to care enough to investigate further or attempt to extrapolate why I was experiencing such severe symptoms. Due to the volatile nature of nasal tissue, my post-surgery symptoms ended up being a little tricky to pinpoint, so my biggest grievance here is his attitude rather than his inability to find the problem. 3. One of the primary reasons I obtained the opinions of 7-8 different ENTs before finding my current ENT was that a good amount of them seemed to be intimidated by Stanford as an institution. A few of them seemed to lose all interest in treating me when I told them my surgery was at Stanford, and merely remarked that Stanford was the best for ENT treatment. As a final tip, do your research before signing up for surgery at all. In my case, I assumed turbinate reductions and septoplasties were side effect-free because they were common surgeries. Dr. Hwang also portrayed the surgery as safe and easy during my first visit. After experiencing my post-surgery symptoms, I spent a lot of time researching my symptoms and found a good amount of potential side effects from turbinate reductions, which may have made me more careful before jumping into the surgery initially. read more

I was referred to Dr Hwang a year. He did my sinus surgery which went well beside some side effects. I requested that Dr Hwang do the surgery because I was Worried about trainees. I never got an answer who did the surgery. Last week I went to see the Doctor again for serious issues. My appointment was at 2.45 pm. I got there at 2.53 pm. I had to wait for an hour to be seen, after I complained. I get in the office and like every time you wait for another 10 min. Then it is not the doctor. It is the nurse who comes in. Then the Doctors assistant comes in and waist my time till the doctor walks in. He is as arrogant as a arrogant can be. I told him I am not happy about the wait. Right away he says that I came in at 3 pm with an attitude. He showed no concern about my serious health issue an an ENT. Spends a few minutes and tells the nurse to reffer me to a Throat specialist. He has no feelings or concerns about anything. His motive is money only. wouldn' recomend him. read more
