Prior…read moreto visiting Dr. Li, I had undergone an MMA surgery with another Stanford surgeon with a very minimal 3 mm jaw advancement, and because of this, my AHI remained the same one year after surgery as it was before surgery -- in other words, the surgery did not improve my sleep apnea at all. However, Dr. Li was able to help me by performing his EASE procedure, which not only helped me sleep better, but also prevented me from needing another revision MMA surgery to advance me the clinically recommended 10+ mm (instead of just a paltry 3 mm). During my EASE operation, Dr. Li even removed some of the MMA hardware from the previous surgery because it was "festering." Compared to MMA, EASE was much less invasive (I was back at work in less than a week), and after several months of gradual expansion with Dr. Li, he had gotten me off CPAP completely, allowing me to sleep much better without having to wear an uncomfortable mask forcing air into my nose every night. This was a tremendous outcome! I was surprised at how much more helpful EASE was for my sleep apnea than my initial MMA, given the latter required a month off work on a full-liquid diet. Treating sleep apnea is a mine field. I researched the alternatives to EASE heavily, and every other option was significantly more invasive and risky (any maxillary expansion procedure involving a LeFort cut is going to be rough and risk complications). There's also quite a few completely unproven / ineffective treatments that do not help sleep apnea at all that you have to be prudent to avoid. And as I found out the hard way, even at name-brand institutions, the surgeons there may not advance your jaw enough to help your sleep apnea. Dr. Kasey Li is truly the best in the world and will take excellent care of you. I am forever grateful for his help and expertise.

Chronic facial pain after EASE, with no improvement in sleep. I had the EASE procedure with Dr…read more Kasey Li in February 2021, hoping to improve my sleep apnea. I am writing this for others considering the procedure, and for the person I was before surgery. Knowing what I know now, I would not have gone ahead with it. Several months after the procedure, I developed persistent facial pain that has continued ever since. I have consulted approximately 15-20 specialists without finding a successful treatment for the pain. The cause of the pain has not been conclusively identified. I have not experienced an improvement in my sleep. The transpalatal distractor (TPD) also had to be repositioned three times during treatment. Years later, this pain is something I have to manage all day, every day. It is a daily reminder of a procedure I wish I had never undergone. Looking back, I feel the potential downsides were downplayed. The hope of finally sleeping well was very compelling, but I did not fully appreciate what living with an outcome like mine could mean. My advice to anyone considering EASE is to look beyond the hoped-for benefits. The prospect of better sleep can be very alluring and can cloud your judgment about the risks. Give the possible downsides serious consideration, including how they could affect your everyday life long after the procedure. I am giving two stars rather than one because Dr. Li has been very responsive and has continued to try to help. I appreciate his efforts, but they do not change my experience or my regret about having the procedure.

I had an appointment scheduled, I called that morning to ask if it was possible to move the time up. The lady on the phone said yes and moved my appointment to 45 minutes earlier. I arrived on time, checked in, and was told to have a seat. After waiting 45 minutes, I went back to the desk to ask when I might be seen. The brunette receptionist rudely said, "It's gonna be a while." When I asked, "Longer than the 45 minutes I've already waited?" she coldly replied, "Yup." She never apologized or explained the delay, and I don't understand why they agreed to move my appointment earlier if they were already overbooked. I wasted a lot of time on a busy day. It's unfortunate because Dr. Struck is wonderful, but some of his staff made the experience very disappointing.
