In a world of supermarket pet stores this PetCo is not very Super. This store deals in your basics, birds, fish, dogs, cats, reptiles and vermi...I mean small fluffy creatures. And I will tell you they do none of it well. They carry the typical chain foods and supplies for the above mentioned animals but they fall completely flat when it comes to customer service. Staff are rarely ever helpful and the store has become incredibly run down over the years. Aisles appear to be rarely swept, and while not a huge deal realize people bring their animals in, and if they don't sweep what makes you think they MOP? The fish section is dismal, they offer saltwater and freshwater but no one here is knowledgeable enough to tell the public how to actually CARE for them. Tanks are dimly lit and most of them have dead or dying fish. The only saving grace is they sell tank raised fish, but at the same time mix them with wild caught fish (huge problem). They sell a handful of birds including smaller parrots, but because of minimal human interaction the hand tamed birds become caged birds pretty quick. The ONE nice thing about this place is they recently began selling Wellness Core which is the only food I will feed my dog, but I'm not sure if the 5 dollar savings is worth the lack of anything resembling a knowledgeable and caring staff. If you can try to hit some of the smaller pet stores in the area to buy, it's worth paying a little extra to support mom and pop. read more

So, I hate that they always have only 1 cashier but 4 check stands...I feel like I always end up waiting in line longer than I shop (that includes the days I spend 15 minutes cooing at the baby kittens). Sometimes I feel like I'm actually benefiting with my PALS card...other times, it's not even worth the drive. I love the groomer though! I been coming here for my pet supplies since August 2007. Parking is horrible so I plan my visit ahead of time (shop at Trader Joe's next door, buy dinner at Boston Market, treats at Dairy Queen, etc...) Over the years, I feel that the customer service at this location has dwindled down. I didn't want to write this review but I encountered similar situation last month. Yesterday, I made a Quick stop to purchase a bag of dog food. Adrien, the rude cashier, was chatting with another worker the whole time I was trying to complete my transaction. The conversation was annoyingly loud, full of giggles and smirks, and not work related. He tells me my total purchase amount without even making an eye contact and continues talking to his coworker. After sliding my debit card numerous times, he turns to my direction and makes a snarky remark "it's not working!!!" then roles his eyes and looks away. Then, he realized he forgot to press something in his keyboard to activate the payment system. Providing good customer service makes a person and the company look great. read more

I have been using the Petco grooming services for over 10 years they do an average job. I go there because Trader Joes is next door. Evidently they don't do dogs that show signs of aging or are 19 years of age even if healthly. While they can refuse service to anyone including me, They instead put me through a lot of humiliation trying to find an excuse not to groom my dog. I called in for a Shampoo, they said they would not groom him. They said he was having trouble standing up on the tables. I said use a towel or mat he slips on smooth surfaces. I went on to say, We were in twice in the last two months the last groomer said there were no problems. I said, if there was a problem they should have told me. (I ask every visit.). I told the groomer I only wanted a shampoo. The groomer says ok. I go down with my dog they say he has to past a walk test for the shampoo. He does. They now don't want to shampoo him. The groomer says talk to the manager of Petco. I do, and The manager says,I can only have the Zoom Groom. I say I just want the shampoo! The dog passes another walk test in front of the manager. The manager asks the groomer, if she wants to do the shampoo. I even tell the groomer, she does not have to do it, if she does not want to, its ok. She says, she wants to do the job, and tells the manager and me what she will do, including file the dogs nails. The end result of this is I get a phone call in about thirty minutes from the groomer who says they are not going to finish the dog. When I come in to pick up the dog, they give me the dog wet and unfinished. The groomer says, he was " a little floppy "when putting him in the tub, She said, he then peed on the floor! Really He's wet how can you tell! It is obvious they made up excuses because they don't want me to come back in, even for the Zoom Groom. And after, seeing the complaints and Lawsuits filed against Petco grooming, and similar stores. I think it is best not to go to any Large Pet stores for grooming especially if grooming a Senior dog. They acted Unprofessional and wasted my time. They did not charge me, for this service, and I am sure its because they knew I would complain. The only place I go for dog food. The Wellness brand they carry is great stuff. My dog has fun in here. The people are helpful and friendly, especially that first day after I got my little guy from the shelter. They were fantastic about helping me pick out good food, treats, bedding and such. Some of the regular "crazy dog ladies" you'll see on the weekend are pretty creepy, but you can't not fall in love with the dogs, cats, rabbits and everything else they bring. Took my 7 yr old, female Australian Shepherd to Sam to get groomed & she came out looking beautiful & smelling oh so fresh and clean. I felt so comfortable leaving my pup with Sam, as she was very professional and knowledge about dogs, and how to groom them. The grooming took about 4 & 1/2 hours (as my pup just came from a shelter and came to us severely ungroomed). Sam called to check in with us to let us know how our was doing. When we came to pick her, our pup looked happy and clean. Sam even gave us pointers on how to keep up her grooming when we are home. Choose Sam for your pet grooming, she is soo friendly, professional and passionate about her job. She definitely aimed to please us & we will be back. Thanks girl! read more

This Petco is our go to store for our dog's food. My dog lives a specific brand of food that the other stores like Petsmart doesn't carry. It also helps that this store is literally down the street from my house. It's just your typical Petco. No frills. One downside is that they don't keep their paper towels stocked in their cleaning stations. So if your pet accidentally pees in the store, you'll have to hunt down an employee. read more

Our go-to place for puppy supplies. They sell Natural Balance unlike Pet Smart. The grooming department is always great with our furry baby and the prices are really good. Unlike other grooming places, they don't keep her there for 8 hours cooped up in a cage until they can get to her. And she always looks adorable when we pick her up. read more

I love coming to this Petco! They have amazing customer service and different healthy cat food for my cats. I love how they have a wide variety of healthy food unlike other places. They have an amazing Aquatics center where I purchased my first aquarium. I love how they are very friendly and take the time to tell you what you should get for your pet. Without them, I would of been lost. I love how you can Adopt fish from here I have gotten tons of fish that needed a new home. I love coming here and will never go back to Petsmart everytime I go there they always give me the right food or don't know what they are talking about. I will be coming back here a lot. My dog left their groomers with multiple cuts and bald patches around his body. There were also a lot of missed spots that I didn't find until I got home! I understand accidents happen but this just seemed like a careless job. I was not only worried because of the cuts I found but the place looked dirty. I asked them to shave him without a style but they didn't listen and gave him a style anyways. They also charged me almost double what my usual groomer charges me, which wouldn't have been a big deal if they did a good job. This is the first and last time I will shop at this Petco. I bought a dog carrier, then I looked at the Petco's website and the same carrier was over $20 cheaper. I took the carrier back to get a price adjustment and they refused. Apparently, they don't price match their own website. The associate who explained this was also very rude and condescending by talking to me like I was an idiot. Good place to shop for pet items and food. Staff are friendly here and will assist you with questions you have. I would comment however, that they need to better staff the aquatics area. Seems that there is never anyone working that area and you need to seek out assistance. Very impressed with the re-modeling that they did. Nice and organized. Best groomers in the area! Kim is by far the best we've found since moving here 6 months ago. We went through 3 other groomers before we finally found her - the upseller ("you really need to buy this special ear medicine"), the deaf (I said take 1/2" off, not leave 1/2" on!), the scolder ("you need to brush him more. I spent 2 hours combing him out". Hello - that's what I'm paying you for). Kim is awesome with our dog, does exactly what she says she'll do AND she does it for half the price I've been paying at other places. Give her a try, you won't be sorry. read more

Now I know why others call it PetNO! I made the mistake of going to this place for crickets. First of all, their crickets are overpriced. Natural Wonders have them 12 for a $1. So, I recommend those looking for crickets to patron their local Santa Clarita small business just up the street, instead of going to this awful place. Not to mention the kind lady that owns the store is very friendly and helpful. The main reason for this review is that I experienced terrible customer service. A few of the kiddys' that work there are downright rude and unhelpful. I walked out of there in a horrible mood and called later to speak with the manager who was understanding. I wonder if they get these kind of complaints often? I'm not one to call and complain or even write reviews but the service was so bad, I feel I need to let other animal lovers know that this place should only be used as a last resort. Michael in Aquatics is fantastic!!!! My daughter brought home a turtle from China town and I was not to happy to discover they sell illegal turtles. I was not going to make her take it back since god only knows what would happen to the turtle if we did. We know nothing about taking care of a turtle so we went to Petco in Santa Clarita. We found Michael who works in Aquatics and he has been so helpful the last year in teaching us how to take care of our turtle. He has been a real blessing and I am so thankful he works there. I've been going to this Petco for all of my dog and chameleon needs. The staff is SUPER nice and helpful, and the manager, Chuck, is the nicest, most caring manager you could ask for. He truly and genuinely cares about the well-being of your pet, and is extremely knowledgable about ALL animals - especially reptiles! I am very disappointed in Petco especially with the District Manager who fired the only groomer who did an amazing job on my 3.5yr old Pittie. Lets start from the beginning, the first time I took my dog here the groomer was okay she told me she couldn't brush my dogs teeth. Although she still charged me for the service, however the girl was sweet and kind to my dog so I wasn't going to push the matter. Second visit was the worse one of all!!! When I picked up my dog my poor baby was stinky and completely wet not ever dried off a little I was pissed and was not happy but what could I do? Force her to take him back and dry him off. Instead I took him home and re-bathe him and DRIED him! I was ready to throw in the towel and just drive to the valley to have good quality service since Valencia groomers tend to do crappy jobs. However I thought maybe the third time is the charm and oh boy it was! My third groomer was AMAZING!!! My dog absolutely loves her and guess what she brushed his teeth and guess what else!?! He was dried and smelt amazing when I picked him up!!! Give this girl a big raise and teach the others to groom like her because she is great!!! However we did have an incident where my dogs nail did get stuck in a drain and ripped off which ended up in a vet visit which cost Petco over $500 which cost my amazing groomer to get written up because Petco management was to lazy to listen to there groomers and change the drain heads. It took my dogs nail and over 2yrs to get them changed out. Now let me tell you not once did I complain about the incident or anything I knew it was an accident it was not intentional my dog was taken care of and I was so appreciative with how attentive she was to my dog I even told one of the store managers who helped us with everything that this was not her fault she is amazing and she is the only one who is allowed to groom my dog for now on. Well fast forward some months later and I get the saddest call telling me I can either cancel or reschedule my appointment with another groomer because my amazing groomer has been let go. Ahhhhh! I was not happy about this at all and I offered to talk to whoever made this dumb decision although I wasn't allowed to. However all good things come to an end and although my sweet baby boy will no longer see his crush she is on to better things and not working with a company that cant take accountability for there actions and listen to there employees. Instead of thinking of your profit, district manager.... You should really think about your employees and maybe one day listen and understand how they can be helped. I give Petco 1 Star.... Our little beagle (Boomer) can be a handful, and he doesn't always cooperate with being groomed. I'm so glad we found this place. Sam, is amazing. I am writing about the GROOMING department. If I can give it a zero I would. I got the call to pick up my GSD. In the back ground I can hear her barking....but it was a bark that something was wrong. I told my boyfriend that we need to hurry because something wasn't right. We got to the store and Sammy brought our GSD out and OMG our dog looked traumatized and I can tell she wanted to get out of there. . I told my boyfriend lets do an assessment before we leave (all dog owners should always do that) So we did. We had her walk back and forth and we noticed she was limping on her left leg. We had her walk again just to make sure and sure enough she was. I went back in the grooming and asked what and how do they treat my dogs and other dogs. I told Sammy (she groomed our dog) that my GSD is limping and the other lady that was grooming another dog said "maybe her leg fell asleep when she was inside the grate" I replied " no, because she goes in her crate to sleep and that never happened" I asked who the store manager was and they said it was Kameron. I asked to talk to him and he came out. I explained what happened and he replied " is your dog old?" I smiled and answered "no, she's turning 9 months this month?" He went on and explained how Sammy has been with them for a long time and no one had made any complaints. That's a lie because I read complaints on Yelp right now. So I walked out because it didn't seem that he cared and I just told my boyfriend that we will never that our dog here again. So we walk to our car (it was brighter outside) and my BF replied "wth" and I asked him what was wrong? He replied " look at her forehead" I looked and now I was upset and hurt because she had an abrasion on her forehead. So we walk back to the groomers and I asked Sammy to look at her forehead and asked her what she did to our dog. She replied " I don't know how that happened. Kameron came out and he said he had no explanation and he would write a report and we can take her to the vet and they would pay for the expense. I explained to him that money isn't a problem and I'll pay anything for my dog. From the look on his face, I don't think he really cared. It seemed more like he was upset at me...the customer. Brittany is by far the best dog trainer around! We have taken our dogs to 6 classes between the two of them with her, and she has been great every time. She is professional and patient, and does a lot of positive reinforcement, but also encourages your dog to "think about it" and figure out what you want them to do. My dogs have both improved a lot, and loved learning with her. We recently moved out of the area and so far, have not been able to find anyone even half as good as her, sadly. read more

When I called to confirm if the fish that I wanted to purchase this evening were available, the lady in the department told me that she would not sell me any fish because she believed that we were going to use them in a wrong way. We plan to give the fish to children tomorrow and were wanting to buy them for that reason. Because of her we will not shop at Petco anymore. We will take our business else where. read more

My wife and I went to PETCO in Santa Clarita, Calif. We got there at 9:02p.m. Sat. May 7,2011. I was approached by a young sales lady telling me that the store was closed. She also said that the register was closed but there was one still open. It was like they wanted you out of there maybe because she had a date. I told her we just wanted to purchase a janitor fish or sucker fish. She was far less than friendly to me. She then proceeds to ask me what size fish tank we have. How many fish do we have in it??? I said look all I want to do is make a purchase and she tells me that she cannot sell me one of these fish. I said you have got to be kidding me. What happened to SERVE THE CUSTOMER and that the CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. She goes and gets the manager and the she says it is our company poliicy to make sure the fish are properly handled and cared for. Oh yes she asked what size tank we had and how many fish are in there??? I said 10 gallon and 6 small fish. Her reply is that is too many fish and that the janitor fish we wanted to buy would get really really big. She also said that they were a tropical fish and that I would need a heater to make the water warmer. I do have a heater for our aquarium. She says I cannot sell you these fish I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!!!!! WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE??? Got my dog a wash here, was last minute so it was nice that they could accommodate me. His wash was not bad, but he wasn't really dried and my poor dog was stuffed into a kennel for a few hours before they called me to tell me he's good to go. He couldn't even "go" because he was stuck in there. Don't like that. Will take my business else where. read more

Usually have a great experience in this store but not today. My 5 year old grandson was looking at the fish and a door panel at the bottom fell off and scratch his leg. It wasn't bad but I sought out a n employee to tell her it fell off and I just leaned it up against the wall. I could see that one side had a piece of cardboard wrapped around the bar to hold the door on. I found a blond woman working on the guinea pig area. She did come over and then told me he shouldn't stand on the door . He did not but his knees touched the door and it fell off scraping his knee.I told her he also looking at another tank and his knees touched the door and it also opened but I was able to close it since it stayed on it's rack. She walked away loudly saying ok Ma'am in a rude tone. I was not seeking compensation, as many young children go to look at the fish tanks, a door shouldn't fall off. I could have left the door on the floor and not let staff know. I really didn't need a rude sales person discounting a child was scraped by a patch up door. Left the store so upset instead having a good experience. My family spends a lot on food and litter for our 3 cats in this store. I'm truly disgusted at this woman's behavior as a store employee. I've been in retail for a long time and have empathy for store staff but I would never have a customer like that especially when a young child was involved. read more

After comparing prices for Frontline on the Petco and Petsmart websites, I went to Petco because of the lower price. At the store, I found the price was just as high as Petsmart. The sales associate explained that their store does not necessarily match the advertised website price. What use is the website if you can't rely on the information there?
