    Petco's fish selling policy.

Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Refusal of Service and Lack of Compassion at Petco To Petco Customer Care, My name is Jonathan Bayani, and I am writing to formally express my disappointment regarding an unacceptable experience my nine-year-old son and I had at your store on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m. My son had recently lost all of the fish in his aquarium due to a prolonged power outage at our home. Because the electricity was out for nearly two days, the heater could not run, the water temperature dropped too low, and his fish died. He lost a beautiful collection of cichlids valued at over $1,000, and he was absolutely devastated. As a fish hobbyist of nearly 50 years, I did not rush to replace them. I completely cleaned the tank, replaced the filter media, cycled the water for nearly a month, added a few goldfish to help rebuild beneficial bacteria, and tested the water thoroughly. Everything was stable, clean, and ready. My son had waited patiently, and this visit to Petco was supposed to be a positive step forward after a heartbreaking loss. Instead, it became a terrible experience. When we arrived at the fish department, we waited nearly 20 minutes for assistance, even though the store was not busy. We saw at least three employees, including Chris, Manny, and Travis. Eventually, Travis came over to help after Chris made the request. My son told him he wanted to buy a Jack Dempsey Cichlid and one of the African Cichlids. Travis asked the standard questions about tank size and water testing. We answered honestly: the tank was 55 gallons, the water had been tested, and everything was ready. We also truthfully explained that our previous fish had died because of the recent power outage. Travis then asked about the pH. I told him I had tested the water and that all levels were perfect. At that point, he informed me that he would not sell us any fish because I had told him our previous fish had died. I was stunned. He did not refuse the sale because the tank was too small, because the water was bad, or because the setup was unsafe. He refused the sale because I was honest. His demeanor was cold, dismissive, and completely lacking in empathy. I even asked him if he would have sold the same fish to someone with less experience who simply had not mentioned losing fish, and he essentially said yes. In other words, honesty was punished. That is not good judgment. That is not good customer service. And it certainly is not compassion. What made this even worse was that my son was standing there through the entire interaction. He had already gone through the heartbreak of losing all of his fish, and instead of being met with understanding, he was made to feel even worse. After leaving Petco, we went directly to Petsmart, and the difference was immediate. Their staff treated us with kindness, professionalism, and genuine care. They even expressed condolences to my son for the loss of his fish. That simple act of compassion meant everything. Petsmart made him feel cared for. Petsmart made him smile again. That contrast could not have been more clear: Petsmart showed empathy and humanity. Petco showed neither. I have been shopping at this Petco for nearly 10 years and have spent thousands of dollars with your company. Because of this one interaction, my family will no longer be returning. We will be taking all future pet-related business to Petsmart. Petco did not lose us because of policy. Petco lost us because of a bad judgment call, poor communication, and a complete lack of compassion in a moment when it mattered most. I ask that Petco seriously review this incident, including whether this refusal was truly consistent with company policy and whether employees are being properly trained in empathy, communication, and practical judgment. Policies should protect animals, but they should not be used in ways that punish honesty and alienate responsible customers. In the end, this experience taught my son two very different lessons: Petsmart showed him what real customer service looks like. Petco showed him what happens when compassion is missing. I hope corporate sees this and takes it seriously. You better believe I will be contacting corporate, they need to fix this. Sincerely, Jonathan Bayani

I've been bringing my pup Bonnie to Catalina at Petco for dog training since she was 3 months old (she's now 9 mos), and I couldn't be happier. Catalina is patient, kind, and compassionate with both dogs and their humans. Thanks to her guidance, Bonnie has mastered her basic commands, made some dog friends, and is more confident. Highly recommend Catalina!

The good: The store is very well organized and easy to navigate. I was able to find a hemastat product here to use on my mom's 15 year old maltese's nail because it was bleeding because he's old and they're brittle. It worked well and was easy to use. They have a lot of cute dog goodies for birthdays like hats, dog cookies, dog ice cream, toys that are birthday related, and more. They have clearance items for good prices as well. The bad: I couldn't find the spray version of the hemastat that I was looking for originally but saw online that Petco carries it. Some items are pricier than if you got something similar at Home Goods (pet bowls and beds for example). The interesting: The single cashier was very chatty and passionate about pets but as a result talked to customers for a very long time while the guy next in line was carrying a heavy and giant container of cat litter.

Well I lost my other account log in so here is another review from my new account. I have been brining my sweet pup since we adopted him 3 years ago. Azalea was the first to groom him from the terrible, dirty, matted mess he was when we got him from the rescue to the spoiled special baby he knows he is now! We are very careful who we allow to handle cheddar as he does get a little anxious at the groomers and the vets, and Azalea has been sweet, patient, TALENTED, and kind since day one! He goes in shaking, falls asleep during the bath and leaves so handsome and happy. She always asks about his medical status and listens to my concerns. I have a lot of trust and respect for her. People warned me about using a big store like Petco but as usual it's the people NOT the organization that make the difference. The gentleman at the register today, sadly I didn't catch his name, was also kind and friendly! Plus they have VIP services if your pup isn't a fan of crating and the noise. I can't recommend them enough

Dog after washed and brushed at this Petco. Great job

I have 5 stars because of the service here. The staff are incredibly accommodating and most of them I've found are also knowledgeable- seem to really know their product, I've had great experience with the grooming here, both just-wash and wash+cut. Sara and Carly are my favorites. Patient and great grooming. I don't buy the dog food here because it's pricey to me, so I can't speak to that. I did purchase a dog toy here but the dog chewed it up within an hour. I assumed the quality would be better if purchased here at Petco, but not necessarily. It was even Kong brand which I generally have good experience with. Lastly, I find the app easy to use for scheduling grooming services.

We had a very odd experience at this store. I came in with my family to buy a fish and the employee, Travis, refused to sell it to us. Maybe he was having a bad day and decided to take it out on us, I am not sure, but Petco needs to train their employees in customer service better. We definitely won't be coming back here for any other pet needs. Also, the living conditions of the fish in this store don't seem to be ideal. Crowded and dirty.

    Ollie dog treats - MOLDY

I purchased Ollie dog treats from this Petco. The expiration date on package was 7/16/25. It was unopened and in my cupboard. On 5/2/25 I opened a package and felt mold. I looked through my stash and found another packet that was moldy. I took the two packets and tried to get a refund or an exchange. They looked it up by my number and said that I bought it in February, over 60 days refund policy. They refused to help me in anyway. They wouldn't even give me Ollie's contact number. I will never go to a Petco again. This location especially is very unfriendly and not very helpful.

The way she greets our fur baby with so much patience and genuine love instantly put us at ease. You can just tell she cares deeply about the dogs she works with. Our pup feels safe, relaxed, and completely comfortable with her, which says everything. Even after we recently moved to Corona and tried other groomers, nothing felt the same. No one had that gentle touch or the warmth that Melissa brings. So now, once a month, we happily make the drive back just so our girl can see Melissa. Thank you, Melissa, for all the care, love, and patience you've shown our baby over the years. We truly appreciate you more than words can express.

I love that they're open Sat and Sun, since it is hard to make it out there on a weekday. I also like that they keep their door locked and you have to call to enter the Salon. They seem to take safety seriously, and I appreciate that since my dog has been attacked by another dog before and she gets a little nervous around other dogs. I was pretty worried about having her groomed by a stranger since she hates taking baths and only had us do it, but she has been adjusting well. Her fur is SO soft when we pick her up, and looks good too. We will definitely be back!

Let me start by saying I didn't want to write this review. I only got to this point after trying to…read moreresolve the situation directly with them. I brought my pug, Chloe, in on Thursday 4/23 at 4pm. I've used their $80 grooming service three times prior with no issues. This visit was a completely different experience. I was told the service would take about 50 minutes. When I arrived, the groomer was still not finished, and I waited an additional ~20 minutes. The groomer (I believe his name was Drew) explained that he had cut one of Chloe's nails too short, which caused it to bleed for an extended period. I was obviously concerned, but still paid and left a tip and left. Since that visit, Chloe has developed multiple bumps across her body that appear to be a reaction to the products used. She has been extremely itchy, reluctant to walk, and has had a decreased appetite. This has been ongoing for several days. I reached out to the business to address this, especially as some of the bumps began to look worse. Despite explaining the situation, they declined to take any responsibility. I was also told they rotate between different grooming products depending on the groomer, which was concerning given that Chloe had no issues during her previous visits. I explained that I may need to take her to the vet due to the severity of her symptoms and that I didn't feel comfortable covering both the grooming cost and potential vet expenses given the outcome. Their response was that they would not provide a refund and the only thing offered was to return the $10 tip. Based on the other negative reviews, it appears that the owner is hard to work with and also lacks accountability. If you look at the attached screenshots, i still decided to disengage when she mentioned she was expecting. Regardless, she should have delegated her business to someone else while she is going through something extremely important while instead coming off as dismissive and lacking empathy. I'm very disappointed with how this was handled. Additionally, it took multiple days to confirm my appointment, and I had to follow up the day before to ensure it was still scheduled. Based on this experience, I would not return. Take a look at the screenshots and you be the judge.

I was hesitant to have Honey groomed because of her age and wanted to make sure I went somewhere that would be gentle for puppies and know how to handle complicated hair. I did quite a bit of research to find a good groomer, and I am simply blown away by how great of an experience we had. Gizmo Pet Spa came to me at my work which was best for me, was on time, and picked up my little angel with such care. She showed me around the grooming truck and sent me videos of Honey being introduced to the tools once they started. She explained why she groomed Honey the way she did and gave me updates throughout without me even asking. I was informed what to watch out for after grooming and felt the experience was so thorough. Honey was in such a good mood afterward and had these adorable little flower bows put in her hair. It has been several days, and Honey looks and feels so much better. I was and still am so impressed! Pricing was so, so reasonable and incredibly fair. Gizmo Pet Spa will have mine and Honey's business for life, and for any other future puppies I have. Cheers to a wonderful small business that truly cares about animals, and is so patient and genuinely loving. It's rare to find people who love what they do as much as this business - and here it clearly shows.

I called ahead to ask if they take cats, and the woman on the phone was very kind and helpful. She explained everything clearly and reassured me that my cat would be well taken care of. My cat, Kiwi, is a very chilled cat but she has asthma and is afraid of water. The staff did a great job handling her and kept me updated throughout the process sending me messages and pictures, which I really appreciated. They let me know she did well overall, even though she got nervous during her bath, they handled her with care the entire time. The service took about two hours, which I liked because they didn't rush and made sure she was comfortable. They even gave her breaks and treats. I also appreciated that they air-dry cats instead of using a blow dryer. I also appreciate how they keep the cats separated from the dogs, unlike PetSmart. The pricing is on the pricier side, but it makes sense for the level of care they provide. My total came out to about $100 because my cat needed extra assistance during her bath, plus an additional $5 for teeth cleaning, which is not included in the base service, you have to request that. Overall, I had a great experience and will definitely be returning!
