Used Petco for the first time for my dog's grooming. The pet groomer Stephanie is very nice and accommodating. The price is decent and you can add on essentials that's extra but in our case was needed. The essentials includes a nail buff and your choice of shampoo and some other items. I didn't want the summer cut yet because it's still too cold. They did a decent job but I noticed she still had some knots in her fur on her belly. They put a scarf on her which is cute but I prefer bows for my female pup. read more

THE WORST GROOMING SALON IN THE WORLD. I made an appointment and hours before the appointment, they called me to tell me my dog was TOO OLD to be groomed. WTF!! She is a ten year old service dog that acts like she is two years old. This one is pretty good for reptiles now. They used to be worse but the employees know what they are doing now and have the supplies. I got a leopard gecko from this location. At first I just went there for supplies for a leopard gecko from a different pet store but when I saw the leopard geckos were nice and healthy and had healthy looking tails I just got one there. She is thriving now and healthy I'm still taming mine but that's usual when you get a young reptile that hasn't been handled. read more

this place will not cut cat nails or any nails unless your pet is a dog. When you look at the inventory you see they have very little for cats. I won't say the have a preference for dogs, but I bet they make much more money off of them. Cat lovers, go somewhere else for your cat needs. They don't want you there! read more

Normally I wouldnt leave a review. Bur I will say this....DO NOT go into this location if they are giving dog lessons. Stood at register waiting to cash out for several minutes with no one in sight. Went to where the classes were and asked if anyone else was working. Trainer said 2 others were there. Waited around for a bit. Now more people are in line...waiting and no employees in sight. Finally after I'm about ready to walk in the back storage area....someone shows up. She says..."sorry we have puppy classes". Wow. So you dont sell anything during classes? I wont bother coming back. Well my family had an interesting experience with the grooming here. Saber, my Alaskan malamute went in Christmas Eve to get groomed along with Princess, my Lhasa apsa. Saber got his toe nail caught in the cage while awaiting grooming. His toe nail was pulled off and this caused a lot of bleeding. It was an unfortunate event... but the store handled it with great customer service. A groomer came with my fiancé to the vet to get treatment, the store manager met them and paid for the vet bill. Also, they paid for princess' grooming. My only complaint is that we were quoted to be paying 80-100$ for sabers grooming. He is an Alaskan Malamute with a lot of hair and some matting. We were told it would cost more to have him brushed out but had no idea it would be double the quote. They charge $7 per 15 minutes worked on.... I only wish they made that clear when booking him or during the appointment to make sure that was ok. 200$ for grooming is insane. My dog looks gorgeous but I have gotten the same job for 120$ read more

I forget the name of the gentleman hat helped my husband and I, but he was so informative and made our first stop by this Petco very enjoyable! We had planned on grabbing a giant bag of Blue Diamond for our senior dog, and happened to catch us and asked if we had considered an alternative brand due to symptoms a lot of pet owners dogs experience. He then gave us even more knowledge on the brand, where it's ingredients come from, and other benefits to switching. He also recommended some senior dog toys that our dog now loves! Once we checked out, the woman at the counter was also lovely and informed us that if our dog did not like the new brand, that we could bring it back as long as it wasn't less than 3/4 full. Highly recommend the Portage Petco for food, treats and training classes! The store is always extremely clean and the employees have the best customer service around!! The manager, Michelle, is always extremely upbeat and helpful! She recommended the Petco brand no grain dog food which not only saves me a ton of money, it's improved my dog's coats and they are healthier than ever! I asked for the Make-Rover for my dog (Mini make-rover: Includes nail trim, teeth brushing or breath refresh, ear cleaning & 15 minute brush-out)...she was done in 10 minutes with the nail trim, teeth brushing and ear cleaning..now way did they brush her for 15 minutes. Then sprayed her with this Strawberry Lemonade smelly stuff that was so strong that it made my daughter and I cough most of the rest of the day. I'll be more specific next time.... read more

Usually I like this place, but I just spent 20 minutes waiting to get help in the fish section, to get feeder fish. I got sick of waiting and left. Looked like only two people working in the place and they were both at the register. The place is clean and the animals they have are used to being handled, which is nice. They just really need to pay attention more to the other sections of the store. If your making a quick stop, it might not be that quick of a stop. read more

My mom is a fish person so she goes there for the aquarium section which she also likes. I used to go to the, "other," pet store in town that has a staff of bad attitudes, but never again. I have been taking my dog to this location for about a year. I have never had a problem until today. Yesterday at the VETCO event, I made my dog an appointment to be groomed. Mind you, I brought my dogs shot record with me. While I am making the appointment, the groomer that I was dealing with NEVER told me that they needed my dogs updated shot record. The day of his appointment, my mom takes my dog for his appointment. They refuse my dog, saying very rudely that they need his shot record and that they are not going to be contacting anyone VETCO because it is Sunday and they only help appointments or emergencies. I called and spoke to the manager, she agreed that the girl should have told me at the time of making the appointment to provide his shot record. She told me that my mom could bring my dog with the receipt from VETCO and his shot record. My mom drops my dog off, gives them her phone number to contact when he is done. 3 HOURS go by, my mom has not heard anything. I get off work where I cannot receive phone calls, check my phone to find 2 missed calls and voicemails to let me know the dog is done. My dog sat at PETCO for 3 hours. This is entire situation is unacceptable and I will not be bringing my dog back to Petco. read more

We've shopped at Petco for a while but the one in Portage, IN is not up to par. The smell of urine is overwhelming there (every time we visit). We go to a lot of pet supply stores and I've never had any issue with smell or cleanliness. The staff is not at all friendly. In fact last night we went in to pick up our usual dog food and waited in line with 4 other customers for a while for no reason. There was no one working at the registers, an employee was tending to the kittens and saw us, she even went up to the registers to get something but did not say a word to us regarding whether or not she'll be with us or if someone else is coming it was very strange. When the fellow came back from wherever he was no one received an apology and he was quite unpleasant. We decided that Merrillville is worth the drive to from now on. read more

We took our 7 month old Aussiedoodle for his first grooming. Since we have never owned a dog that required a groomer, Jackie, (manager) walked us thru the process. Feeling reassured with the service and care provided, we left our puppy for his spa day. Later we received a call from Jackie asking if he had ever been groomed because he was scared of the clippers. Two months prior he had been bitten by a pit bull and had to go to the emergency vet. He was scared and hurting and did not react well to the clipper when being shaved around the wound. Apparently he is still afraid. Jackie let him relax and tried again. First she let him sniff the clippers while they were off. Once he was comfortable she turned them onto a low setting and let the vibrating cord touch him to see what his reaction was. He was still frightened. Even though he did not get groomed we are very satisfied with the care shown to our puppy. We would highly recommend Jackie to everyone. She was gentle and kind and tried everything but kept Oakley's reactions in mind and did not force it. He came away from his spa day bathed with clipped nails and spotless ears, and she adjusted the bill to reflect no hair cut. Thanks Jackie! read more
