Waited over 30 minutes for help in aquatics for them to help a customer that came after us first. I asked for two types of fish and a plant, they "forgot" to grab the other fish. What was meant to be a quick stop, turned into wasting an hour of my time. Your employees also are terrible at catching fish and almost never offer to help. Always have to search for an employee for help. The new Pac-Man "desktop" pet are cruel and inhumane. They should have a regulated temperature home and proper care guides. What's the point in asking what the size of your tank is and how many fish you have, if you're not going to treat the rest of your animals with the same respect. read more

Don V I have been a customer for quite some time. Late yesterday I purchased a shrimp and a blue Tang. When I got home I noticed a white spot on the Tang's fin. It was too late to call the store. This morning the tang was dead. I went back to the store explained to the manager{?} that the fish had a white spot on the fin which suggested that the fish was sick and died in less than 12hrs. I asked for a refund and she told there was no refund on saltwater fish. My point, however, is that the policy needs to be a little flexible in certain circumstances such a a fish dying in less than 12 hrs. I believe that I should of gotten a full refund or store credit. Andrea yesterday was super helpful and made my experience of bringing home Simon a fantastic one. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about reptiles and I could tell she truly cares. The nice gentleman and lady at the cash register were also very helpful and made the checkout and loading process smooth. (I wish I remembered their names) Please consider hiring more workers. We arrived here at 745 when they close at 9, it was my dogs special day out as he doesn't get to go to stores with us much so we took our time letting him smell and look at everything! As we neared the front, we saw the 2 for $5 bin of toys and decided to look through them to find our pup 2 cute ones! As we were looking the man standing at the register kept saying "any day now, ANY DAY NOW" in a loud and obviously annoyed tone. Came into Petco while waiting for our food at Lefty's to be finished. Ended up grabbing her food as well as a heart shaped treat since she was such an excellent doggo today. The staff didn't interact with us until we got to the register, even when entering. We had never been in this store before so we were greatful it was organized because without any staff attention we had no idea where we were going. Our town hasn't had a Petco in decades so we weren't used to the set up, but it was a nice store and not too expensive. Decent store but not super awesome attention from the staff unfortunately. The store is tidy, very well stocked and the prices are clear. Shopping for things you need for dogs, cats, birds, fish and other small creatures is on display. April 13th I took my 3 amigos to Petco I asked for a full groom for each and their nails clipped and smoothed with a Dremel. I explained they were almost 16 years old and had issue one had a really bad eye! Their faces might be difficult! They said they would call me if their was a problem. No call ! I took my 5 month old pup in for a bath and to get her nails trimmed. My dog came back from her grooming appointment smelling good and with her nails trimmed. The reason for the low rating is because of what happened after her appointment. There were two women working in the evening. One had blonde hair and she was helpful to me as I was trying to get my dog back into her harness. The other woman had brown hair and was in the process of grooming a dog. I heard and observed this woman speaking harshly to the animal, saying "stop it! Give me your foot!" and also "this is f****** ridiculous." From what I could see, the dog was not aggressive or doing anything out of what one would expect for an animal getting groomed. This behavior is unacceptable! These animals arrive at your facility every day, coming from all kinds of backgrounds and past home lives, they are trusting a stranger to treat them well. This woman did just the opposite. This display makes me never want to go back to your facility, because quite frankly I cannot trust that this treatment didn't and won't happen to my dog. read more

I've been a loyal customer to the Portage #01975 for many years. The employees have always been nice and helpful. For the first time, I've never been met with such rudeness and unwillingness to help. On 3/26/24, I purchased several fish, which were placed into a clear bag with no printing on it. 2 of the fish died recently, so I returned today to see about an replacing the fish, since I was still in the 30 day period. When I go back to the fish department, the employee I dealt with was said that she couldn't replace my fish since I didn't have a water sample. I could get a refund but she wouldn't do an even out exchange. I was unaware of this policy. She held up 2 of the bags she had on her and said that the policy were printed on the bags. I said the bags that I was given at the time of the purchase was clear. She basically said that I was mistaken and must've gone to a different store. I was like lady, I have a receipt. It clearly states this location. And I've been coming to this location for years. Well she continues to state that well you can get a refund and buy new fish, but an exchange is not going to happen without that water sample. When I tried to ask her when this policy was implemented, she refuse to tell me, saying that it was on their bag and they've always had the bags with the policy printed on it. This makes me wonder if it's even worth to go back to that location at all or go to a different pet store. read more

This is not the nicest Petco I have been to, but Kasey was exceptionally kind and helpful. The building itself seems a little dark and outdated, but they have pretty much everything you'd expect from a Petco. A solid store overall. Again, though, Kasey helped us in a next level way. She was incredibly kind with our kids, helpful with us, and patient with all we needed. We are now thrilled to own a dwarf hamster named Fluffer Nutter, and we look forward to going back to see Kasey again! read more

the lady in the aquatics center flat out sucks my girl and I was Uber exited to get fish for our new tank did all the digging about how to set one up and care for the fish we were wanting to get.. go to get said fish lady gives us a 5 minute lecture of how they won't fit in our tank wanting to get 10 small fish that grow a max 2inch's (as I see 25 fish in a tank behind her larger fish than what i was wanting in the same size tank as mine).. and we probably didnt set it up right...and how we were going to waste our money on these fish cause they would die. we took our business down the road purchasing fish with no issues and they are fine and healthy have been for over 48 hours now.. needless to say do not take your business here and I hope the lady in the back reads this my fish are doing fine and well hope you check on those poor baeta fish sitting in a cup of water read more

Everyone I encountered was helpful and kind. So wish I'd been more organized and less hurried when I picked my pup up from grooming. I thought the cut on her head and face looked odd but she has very fine hair. Once I got her home and looked I was horrified. Uneven cut, difference of 2-3 inches. Mats left in. Hair on ears. and face just thinned. Not trimmed overall. I asked her legs get shaved down do to snow. Not done. Muzzle doesn't look washed or cut. This is a ten pound morkie that they stated cooperated very well. Usually it takes 2+ hours to groom her. It was less than 90 minutes. I can see why. Nails look barely trimmed but not buffed of filed. Truly the worse cut ever. read more

Petco is normally a pretty decent place for me snd my husband to last minute shop, however tonight it was not. My husband and I went to go to Petco because the heating lamp for his gecko had died and was not working. If it is not known, this could cause the gecko to die. We rushed over to Petco knowing they would have more lamps and strolled into the business at around 8:55. At the time we had no clue that it was closing at 9 (our bad and we did apologize). We made our way to the back of the store trying to find the lamps, when this worker says "The store is closed, please find what you need and leave." I said "Oh we're sorry, where are your heating lamps?" She told us where and we grabbed our items then headed up the front to check out. When we made it to the front two of the workers were standing there chatting clearly both happy, which is fine because its okay to be happy to be done with a shift that is understandable, so my husband and I waited patently as they finished talking. At this point we were still being polite, and we were the entire time because we both felt bad being in the store after it had closed. One of the girls finally checked us out after talking for about 5 minutes, but as she checked us out her mood changed completely. She became snotty and rude. Our card declined once and she gave my husband a dirty look and then told him to try again. Once we were done checking out the girl escorted us out, but before letting us out she locked the door and then opened it with her hands while giving us dirty looks. We both still felt bad for not knowing it was closed and my husband said "We're sorry, we didn't know you were closed." The girl then replies in the most snotty tone "You actually did know, she just went back and told you." and then proceeds to slam the door and watch us walk to our car. While I will own up to our wrongs in going into the store before closing I will not sit here and allow my husband and I to be treated with such disrespect from an employee when we are the customers. We walked in before the store was closed and were not stopped, and then were rudely treated even though we are still customers. It should not matter whether the store is closed or not, a customer is a customer and they should always be treated with respect. It is understandable to be annoyed but there is no acceptable reason to treat a customer in such manners. We will not be returning and this information will be shared so no one else will have to deal with such rude treatment. read more

I frequent this location for the grooming salon. I made an appointment online and Stacy called the day of the appointment to let me know the groomer was out that day due to a medical emergency. She offered me several other time slots the same day. When I arrived, my dog was taken right back and Stacy did a phenomenal job. When I took the invoice to pay to the cashier at the front of the store, the registers were empty. I saw a manager running up to the registers and was going to say "please don't run, I'm in no rush." Before I could say anything, she screamed "Austin!" twice. The door to the back office popped open and here comes Austin. He snatched, I have a paper cut to prove it, the invoice out of my hand and scanned it. He gruffly said "tip?" I stated my preference and that was it. The manager walked by and Austin said something about the schedule to her. I asked if he was having a bad day. He said "you could say that" and proceeded to tell me about his overpriced apartment and how he couldn't afford the rent. Dude, I'm just here for my dog. I get we all have bad days, but unloading on a customer about personal stuff is not cool to me. Also, instead of screaming twice, couldn't the manager have checked me out? The groomers are great. I've been shopping at Petco on S Westnedge for years. I'm a cat owner and pick up his food, kitty litter, and toys here. They always keep in stock the Blue Freedom Grain-Free Adult Indoor Fish flavored cat food that he likes. I also like that it is close to my office, which makes it a breeze to swing by on my lunch hour. I've never had an issue with the store but I don't use any of their services. They sometimes can be busy and don't seem to have a lot of staff on-board. I think this is a trend in this area. Stores & restaurants can't fill all the open positions they have so unfortunately us consumers have to bear with longer lines. read more

Grooming: Took my rambunctious golden retriever to get the de shedding treatment and cut. He is really big and hyper and the girls were really good at controlling him. She did a really good job and the best she could do for the amount of hair he is shedding. He is losing his puppy fur so she can only do so much. Noticed a hug difference when we got home and he looks great and smelled so nice! read more

They have a good rewards program and great sales. They also have a 30-day guarantee on the fish, which is longer than most stores. They take good care of their tanks and fish, at least for a big chain store. My experience with their customer service has been mixed. Some employees are helpful, knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. They have helped me out of a few jams. Most of the time I have to wait a long time to be served. Sometimes the employees seem frazzled from and preoccupied with other duties. One time, when returning dead fish, I was treated disrespectfully by an angry employee for not having a water sample (I had checked beforehand, and was told a sample was not needed). I was sent an online survey afterwards, and filled that out. After completing the survey, I got an automated reply that the store manager would contact me, and I have never been contacted. So, I now only shop there for "emergencies." Hopefully YMMV. Update 2/25/16: I got in touch with corporate customer relations through Petco's Facebook page, and they responded right away. I got a call from the local store manager a day or so later, and I felt he listened to my concerns and took them seriously. read more

The employees here are very disrespectful and rude. I will never set foot into a petco again. I was in multiple times for aquarium supplies and the same lady was exceptionally rude every time. She was giving us false information about the care of our fish as well as trying to sell us products that were completely unrelevent. She wouldn't listen to us and kept soaking over us. A couple weeks later we had come in to buy a leopard gecko enclosure. They were running a sale on the tank we wanted, so when we were picking it up she approached us and was asking us why we wanted that size and what we were doing with it. We would be getting a juvenile gecko so a 10 gal aquarium is what we wanted for a beginning setup. She tried to tell us that a juvenile gecko would outgrow a 10 gallon tank in less than a month, and that therefor is why we needed a bigger tank that costed much more. She talked to us like we were dumb and she gave us snarky looks if we questioned her. We left because of how rude she was and how she treated us. So we went to a local pet store and talked to the knowledgeable staff there, and they assured us that a 10 gallon is what we needed. I will not ever go back to petco again. read more

I also had a horrible experience. I took my 6 month old GSD to get a bath and nails trimmed. When I picked him up he looked okay. Except they told me they couldn't trim his nails because he didn't like it. After I got home I notices he had something gummy stuck in his fur. It was at the base of his spine close to his tail. I tried washing it off with a wash cloth. I thought I had gotten most of it. Well I hadn't. 2 days later we ended up at the vet because he had serious skin irritation. They ended up shaving 2 separate spots along his spine. He had a reaction to the shampoo that was left unrinsed on him. It's been about 6-7 month his hair is finally grown back. I would highly recommend not using this place. read more

I didn't catch her name but it was around 1 pm Sunday afternoon, she needs a class in customer service and a lesson in human communication. Absolutely the worst place to go to take your animal unless you want their hair butchered and then you treated like crap I took my Corgi in for a grooming and at no point in time did they tell us what the cost would be I just got the information of the extra cost all they would say that the cost goes by the breed but never did they tell us the cost of my breed of dog at even when I talk to them on the phone to arrange the appointment when I asked multiple times at the salon and then afterwards still they insisted that they told me but if I would have known it was going to cost $50 for my little Corgi to get her hair butchered I would have walked right out the door. Her haircut was so bad that I actually cried over it and everytime I walk my dog I get asked what's wrong with her tail what's wrong with her ears it's absolutely embarrassing not to mention that she's a purebred show dog that my children show. Due to the extremely poor job in grooming my dog I had to drop out of the show for my kids that weekend and lost that deposit as well. The groomer pretty much took a pair of scissors and did a blunt cut across her tail messed up her ears messed up her pantaloons it's pathetic never take your dog there if you want a decent cut because for my tiny Corgi it cost $80 for a job that butchered her completely. When I called and spoke to the manager about my concerns and situations I was told that they would give me a free grooming and to have her come back in but there is no way that she can get fixed because they cut so much hair off unless they magically can put it back on my dog which I doubt. She then continued to argue with me about the cost and the the haircut and the groomer who obviously knows nothing about the breeds of dog considering they kept calling my Corgi a Cocker Spaniel. By no means will I take my dog back for a free grooming after this I will go down there tomorrow to personally speak to the manager again and to show her the job that the groomer who's supposed to be trained to do screwed up. So if you want it overpriced extremely poor unprofessional job go ahead and go to Petco groomer in Portage I've never experienced such unprofessionalism from employees there at all they wanted to do was argue and refuse my demand of a refund or partial refund. read more

As far as prices go for food and treats you can find them cheaper at other stores. We mostly use them for the grooming services which are fantastic. We have an Aussie who is almost blind and they take such good care of him. You do have to tell them what you want done though such as bath, blow-out, and his summer trim. The length you want cut, no shaving under his belly only scissor cut, etc. Time wise it varies and they will call if it takes longer than anticipated. We LOVE Petco. read more

Employees don't know anything about animals. I went to this store and what I saw was horrible! There was blood in the chinchilla cage!! Many of the mice looked close to death and almost all of the rodents were way over crowded. When I informed an employee about a boy mouse in the girl mouse cage she merely replied "that's just a girl mouse with big parts." I have been keeping mice for about 10 years now, I think I can tell the difference! The one intelligent employee I saw pointed out a fish tank infected with ich and was reamed out by a manager!! The manager accused the employee of not knowing anything, saying things like "how do you know what ich looks like?" I went in for dog food but the price was outrageous! They wanted almost $10 more per bag then I would normally pay for the same brand at a different store. i would give them 0 stars if yelp would let me If you love animals please stay away from petco! read more

My mother so graciously took our two dogs to get bathed and groomed here last weekend. She has taken them here before to pretty good results. Apparently that was a fluke because both dogs came back with crazy haircuts. She requested that our malamute mix simply be bathed and thinned out from her winter coat. When she returned to picked the dogs up, she found the malamute shaved completely and looking like a sheered lamb. This was A) not asked for and B) completely insane to do to such a dog. She now looked like a bobblehead as her head apparently hadn't been touched as neither did her tail. She looks liked a completely different dog. On seeing this my mother became hysterical and starting crying about what they did to the dog. Upon seeing this the two girls on duty that night that did this to the dog immediately started blaming her and when the manager came in he too blamed her and took the receipt from my mother as to I guess erase evidence she may have? They continued to blame my mom for what they did to my dog. On top of that, we discovered later on that the other dog had also been randomly shaved a randomly different length under his chin than he had everywhere else. I can understand MAYBE screwing up one dog, but both dogs? Are you kidding me? Needless to say the dogs won't be going there anytime soon unless its for halloween. read more
