We go here for our dog's food and grooming. They are usually in stock with the fresh food option but there have been issues when online orders need to be refunded due to not having the correct stock listed online. We stopped by this Petco to pick up a few bags of treats. To be perfectly honest, we stopped here for a restroom break during a road trip. Compared to other Petcos, this one is a bit smaller, but it appears to have all the basic things that you might need for your dog. Generally speaking, I thought the prices were fine. The cashier seemed to be a bit aloof, but that was not a major issue. I was a bit surprised that she did not offer our dog a treat. But, I guess you cannot win them all. read more

UPDATE as of 3/14/2024- the vet confirmed and reported this location for animal abuse. The results indicated strangulation (why is eyes were blood red and bulging out his sockets and the bruise on his nose was something flat and hard that caused bruising. I looped in my lawyer and almost forgot to update other dog parents to NOT BOOK HERE. Save your fur baby the trauma. read more

Then she only cut the body and did not attempt to do my dog's face and I still had to pay full price! I am livid. I have to go somewhere else and finish the service. So disappointed in the grooming department here, it has really gone down hill. I've been a regular for over 6 years and in the past few months they've cancelled my pups grooming 3 times. The first time it was because my dogs groomer went home sick. I guess none of the other groomers could take him?? They didn't even inform me until 30 min before his appointment. Not a huge deal but I took off work and already had the car started and got my toddler dressed so that was annoying. Second time it was after I got all of us in the salon to check him in , again I took off of work, and his groomer freaks out because he's part Pomeranian and she's allergic to Pomeranians and doesn't have any allergy medicine. So they cancelled it and wanted to reschedule it for another day. First let's ignore the fact that you're a dog groomer allergic to a popular dog breed and don't bring medicine to work with you, but why wouldn't she be able to switch dogs with a different groomer?? They said it was my fault because I listed him as toy poodle. I did that because the online appointment thing only lets you choose one breed and he's a toy poodle/Pomeranian so that's the one I happened to pick. They've groomed him dozens of times and he's a regular so you think they would've put it in his chart or something considering they have an employee with an allergy. Then when I came back the third time, now they are refusing to groom him because he's too matted. So they cancelled it again and told me I'd have to take him to a vet to be groomed. Obviously he'd be a little matted when all of my appointments have been cancelled since early January (there was 2 more that I had scheduled that were cancelled due to snow). Luckily after calling over a hundred groomers because I was determined to get him groomed that same day, I found one that had no problem. They saw the matted hair but it wasn't an issue for them. I won't be returning to petco anymore for grooming and I don't recommend it at all. read more

Walk in and it's nice and clean, workers were friendly and I didn't have to walk around to find a worker. Took my munchkin to get a pedicure and they had more than one worker there, they made my dog feel comfortable and she went back with no problem. I also like the fact that, they have one customer in at a time and the test line up outside the door. We have been taking our little dogs to Petco for a while and didn't have many complaints. Today I took our little blind Shih Tzu for grooming. They have it on record that he is blind and gets scared if he abruptly touched. Despite me going over everything with the groomer, who happened to be a new one (as soon as I saw her I got bad vibes. She didn't seem happy to be there), we received a call two hours later from Petco stating that our dog had bitten her and drew blood. Because of this we can never bring him back again. I went there to find out what happened. A young lady who initially checked me in told me that the groomer had grabbd my dogs back leg, he was startled and bit her. Despite being told he's a special needs dog that's been successfully been groomed there in the past I told them that the new groomer must not have experience with dogs like that. I can say that we are done with Petco. We will never take any of our other pets there nor will our relatives pets. We won't even shop there anymore. read more

I like the vital care thru Petco. It saves me money on my two fur babies. I also like the grooming of my fur babies. The only complaint I have with the grooming department is that they hardly EVER answer the phone and much less answer your messages. The message says that you can go online to get appointments, However, whenever I do and go under my groomer's name, I can NEVER find back to back appointments for both at the same time I always have to go in to see if there are any earlier appt cancellations, rather then just calling. It is inconvenient and something should be done with the phone system there! read more

As I continue my Pet Store Grande Tour, Petco continues to disappoint in this district. Stopped today to grab an additional Mystery Snail for an aquarium. While I was actually impressed with their amount of fish and healthy appearance, both myself and another customer couldn't find anybody to help us. I went to the cashier and asked, resulting in her pointing across the store to another employee who was working. He took care of us and got me what I needed. He also offered to teach an employee the fish department, but their response was simply "no". Ehhh.. Feels like an old location that could use updating, but that seems to be Petco as a whole. Took my 8 pound 5 month old puppy here for a full grooming.... never will I ever go back or recommend their grooming services to anyone.... my puppy was returned to me his nails sharper than when I dropped him off, eyes not cleaned, a long match of hair missing from his face where they clearly messed up (and they offered no apology or explanation - Cindy was his groomer, and she was no where to be found when I picked up my puppy).... and these are just the mess ups that I could quickly identify, who knows what else they did to him. If you value your time, energy and money, stay away from the La Plata's Petco Grooming Dept. I have never had an appt there without it being rescheduled or changed last minute. Initially, I thought it was just the laziness and unprofessionalism of one groomer (Angela), but recently learned that it's clearly the entire department. My dog had a grooming appt on 10/11/22 at 3:15 with a groomer named Christopher. At 2:38 when I was about to leave out the door, Christopher called me and asked was I still coming to the appt. I was shocked by the question being that they have an automated system that has you confirm your appt multiple times leading up to the appt date and I just confirmed that morning. I told him that I was indeed still coming and he asked if I could come the next day at 11 because he wasn't going to have time to give her a full bath and cut, which was a lie because the store doesn't close until 8pm. I was so disappointed and upset because it literally takes about 2-3 weeks to get an appt. After I told him that I had never had an appt time that wasn't rescheduled or canceled last minute there, what I thought about their professionalism and respect for people's time and money, that I've had an 3:45 appt at another Petco location and they had no problems with time, and why was I allowed to make an 3:15 appt if there isn't enough so called time, he told me to "just bring her on in." I ended up not taking her out of fear and concerned that she wouldnt be treated properly being that I had to force him to do a job that he clearly didn't want to do. To show the pattern of wasting ppl time and money...My dog's very first appt was with Angela and contacted me and asked if I could come in earlier. I reluctantly, scrambled last minute to maneuver my schedule around to make the new appt time. Her next grooming appt was with Angela again and this time she contacted me the day before her appt and said that she wasn't going to be there and no other groomer could take her and I would have to reschedule. The major problem with this is that once you reschedule, you can't get an appt for 2-3 weeks from the date when you're looking. Thinking that this was just Angela's lack of professionalism, I figured I would try another groomer, which I tried Christopher and soon realized that it's the entire La Plata Petco Grooming Department. They clearly lack professionalism and management. I would also like to share that I used Clinton's Petco after the second failed attempt with Angela and had zero problems. I should have stuck with Clinton's location, but tried La Plata's location again thinking that it was just one groomer, but nope, that entire location needs revamping. read more

Love Petco. To have a local place where you can get ALL of the pet supply you might need is a great thing. And Petco's prices became better lately (Or is it that the online store raised their prices...). I was here last Thursday, the place was very organized, and there was a sales person greeting us and asking if we need any help, and that he is here if we will (I think Petco actually reads reviews). After all they did not have the fish we were looking for, but we got other things. In general Petco is great, and I can tell they are improving. read more

The groomers at this Petco location are fantastic! Camden, my almost-4-year-old Wheaten Terrier hates taking baths but seems to love Mary and Tabitha. Mary is espceially patient and polite and has actually fussed at me for allowing his coat to get matted. I totally didn't mind...she was right and it was nice to see that she cared enough to be upset. After trying several groomers in the various cities in which we've lived, I'm ecstatic to find someone who A.) knows my Wheaten is not a Schnoodle or Goldendoodle or any kind of Poo-anything, and B.) doesnt' make him look like a Cocker Spaniel with a sun visor. The ladies give the pups treats and massages and kisses. I have no problem feeling comfortable leaving my rotten, attention-hound of a dog with them, and he comes home clean and handsome! Try them out for sure. The prices are a little hefty ($75 for a full groom) if you have a complicated cut, but it's worth it, if you're gonna spend the money on dog grooming at all. read more

Where do I begin... well let's start with what prompted this review. NO HELP!!! Me and 2 other customers stand in the fish department for over 10 minutes waiting on anyone to present themselves, and not one person comes. I finally say forget it and begin to walk towards the front of the store when I encounter 2 employees stocking the same shelf. Conversing among themselves, I stand and wait to see if they even acknowledge my presence, to which the shorter lady (the same lady who was annoyed the last time I came in the store and asked her a question) finally asked if I needed anything. I said "is there anyone that can help in the fish department?". She turns to the other employee and asked her if somebody else was at work today?!?!!! Lol Oh and bonus complaint, I brought my shin tzu in for a haircut (prior).... THE WORST EVER!!! I swear they gave the shears to a toddler and said go for it! Ugh, smh read more

Petco in Laplata Md is excellent. Everyone there is extremely nice and they do wonderful grooming.

I only visit Petco for rabbit food and supplies, but I must say, they aren't very friendly. I think most of the time, I am the one who speaks first. Customer service could definitely be improved but overall, this is a pretty nice location...for a pet store. read more

This PETCO is the absolute worst pet store! The staff that works there do not care one bit about their customers. Today, my husband and I went in again against out better judgement. We wanted ONE fish. The woman working in the fish department saw us. Ignored us. Didn't want to be bothered. Maybe this is a little closer to getting help from the others days we've tried. Absolutely nobody in the fish department those days. We walked right by her to the registers so I could purchase something. A line of three people at the only open register. Not bad EXCEPT nobody was working at it! A customer was running around PETCO trying to find someone to help us. We gave up. I threw what I wanted to purchase back in the cart and left. The sad thing is, this seems to be the normal there. One more thing. This is directed to whoever places birds in Petco stores and to the people who are suppose to be caring for them. The big bird at the La Plata store is so sad. There are two toys to keep him occupied. TWO of the same toy! The last bird that was there was originally $400.00. Petco marked the poor thing down to $99.00. I asked the woman who supposedly works with him what his personality was like. She said he was nasty and mean. Wonder why? I'm sure the new bird there is heading in the same direction. I also wonder if PETA could help these poor birds. This store is a shame! read more

I'm 100% for enforcing the mask mandate but there was one employee who was extremely rude and unprofessional today. She was a gigantic woman with long blonde hair and glasses. Two elderly people walked in on separate occasions without a mask on and rather than getting close enough to politely ask them to pull their mask up, she screamed at them from across the store. The employee was standing by the back wall opposite the fish section, she wasn't even visible, we were all looking around to see where the screaming came from. I was standing by the cats so it shocked me and everyone else around us. The elderly man turned bright red, apologized and left. The second was an elderly woman and the same thing happened except she was even louder, to the point my husband who was back by the fish tanks heard her. The elderly woman immediately put her mask on and apologized. Immediately after embarrassing this woman, she walked up to the nearest employees to talk about how "stupid some people are". Is this how petco trains their employees to talk to their customers? Neither one of them even put up a fight so there was no need at all to cause a scene and make the entire store feel uncomfortable. read more

I have been going here for years and something has changed! They cancelled last Friday after I took time off from work-I decided to be understanding-big mistake! I rescheduled for this morning and was 30 minutes late....there were no dogs there and the girl claimed that the groomer was in the bathroom. This became quite questionable since I waited quite a while to talk to her (she wasn't there?) The entire conversation was questionable the girl said I lost my appointment for my dogs which is odd because I have 2! We took our Labrador Retriever Stella to Petco grooming for a shampoo and nail clipping. Stella's groomer Heather was amazing! Heather was super friendly, and did an outstanding job taking care of Stella. Stella looks & smells great! We'll definitely use Petco grooming in the future. read more

I love this place. I have taken my dog to 4 different PetSmarts and have had bad results. This place cleans and brushes my dog very well.

I've been to #2739 to use the self serve a couple of times. This time I decided to have the full service which was a lot better than the service I received at another pet grooming salon (my dog was never completely dry). I called #2739 on Saturday for a Sunday appointment and was able to get an evening appointment on Saturday. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by Heather. She was very patient with my dog who was very excited. When I picked up my dog, Heather indicated how sweet my dog was and felt really soft. Heather did great job in my dog's grooming. She felt soft and smelled really good. I will take my dog to this store again. Everyone there was very friendly. read more

I took my pup for her grooming appointment at 5 pm yesterday. Immediately upon walking into the grooming salon, I was met with the most foul odor I've ever smelled. I normally take my puppy to the Petco in Waldorf, but I was not satisfied with the way they cut her hair so I decided to give LaPlata a try. Understandably, she was not allowed grooming as she had just had a rabies shot that morning. I was asked if I wanted to reschedule her groom, but I was so disgusted by the condition and the smell of the salon that I would not be returning. This place needs a thorough cleaning at least daily as it appears that it has been a long time since it had been cleaned. They could also use more customer service training. The location in Waldorf is a completely different experience And I will be returning there. read more

This is the worse petco I have ever visited. I can see why the other two reviews have good things to say about the groomers, they always seem to be busy anytime I have been in there. However as for the rest of the store, the employees could care less about customer service. They mostly seem young and uninterested that they have a job as well as need more training in their customer service skills. Where is the management in all of this you ask? I don't know, I never see the management. It's obviously a direct reflection of themselves, so do yourself a favor and just go to the petco in Waldorf. The experience is night and day, and the store just seems all around more inviting and in better shape. read more
