I am writing this review to warn any customer from purchasing dog food from Petco in the Durham region, specifically their line of food, Wholehearted at 4011 Durham Chapel Hill Blvd. I purchased a bag of dog food from this location that was infested with webs, moths and larvae. This is unacceptable for any product, especially pet food. When I returned it, I was only offered a refund or an exchange for the same brand -- despite clear concerns about a possible infestation issue. It was laughed about that, "this happens when we don't have climate control in our warehouse." No effort was made to offer compensation or a price adjustment if I chose to purchase a different line of dog food instead from this Petco location. I asked for a discount such as 10% off of our purchase of a different brand of food due to the major health concern surrounding Wholehearted, yet the manager was unaccommodating. This response was extremely dismissive given the seriousness of the issue and I will never be returning as a Petco customer. read more

This store doesn't look at clean as the other nearby Petco. You can tell that the grooming staff if very overwhelmed as there was nobody to help with incoming calls and they were trying to juggle so much with only 2 people available. The person (Chris) who handled my dog did a great job and was friendly with both me and my dog. He gave a helpful tip related to my dog as well. read more

Trying to schedule a grooming appointment here is beyond stressful. Improvements definitely need to be made. Phone calls are never answered and they've stopped returning all messages. They say that you can book online but I'm not sure if this is true. Every time I try to book online, it says online appointments aren't available. But when I created a new account with a new e-mail, all of a sudden I could book. When I booked an AM appointment before the store opened, I was wandering around outside wondering how to get through the locked doors to the grooming salon. I figured maybe they let me book early by mistake? And opted to wait the half hour until the store opened to come inside for my appointment. I was then told by the employee that I missed my appointment and couldn't be seen and that I was supposed to knock so someone could let me in. The grooming salon has gigantic clear windows, and its directly on the outside of the store. She saw me and could have let me in or come get me, even give me a courtesy call letting me know the proper procedure. I waited over a month for that appointment. PLEASE READ!!! It's hard looking for a groomer so when I found Petco and went for the first time in November, everything was good. My dog look great. Danielle did a great job. No complaints and very easy to talk to. The price they charged is reasonable. So I booked another appointment on February 3, 2021 @1pm for her second appointment with Danielle. We checked in. I talked to Danielle and told her what I wanted. No problem! I got a call at 3:45 saying that my dog was ready. I went to pick her up and checked her before I paid. After I paid, I went back to get my dog. I asked Danielle, "Was Jazzy good? Is everything good?" She replied, "She's good." So I took my dog and left. When I got home, my sister picked her up and hugged Jazzy. Then she realized that there was something in her tail hair. We looked and THE TIP OF HER TAIL IS GONE and it looked like they applied some glue to stop the bleeding. SHE CHOPPED OFF MY DOGS TAIL!!!! I took my dog back and talked to the managers because Danielle was off work. Jaime, Jessica and another manager helped me. They were very understanding and helpful. They sent me to the vet. Petco paid for the visit and reimbursed me. The thing that pissed me off the most is that she didn't tell me when I asked if everything was good. WTF! If she told me from the start, I would have understood and not been so mad because accidents happens. First, she didn't tell me. Second, the manager called her and she said the my dog had a scab that was bleeding on her tail. Well that still didn't make sense! You don't cut off your leg when you have a scab on your knees! And she is NOT A DOCTOR! If she was honest from the start, I would not be so mad but she kept on lying!!! People there are great and very helpful but because this ONE chopped off my dog's tail, it has left a bad taste in my mouth and I will NEVER go back to this Petco. The store itself is what you would expect from a large chain pet store. This one tends to be on the disorganized side, and clutter of often blocking a few aisles or areas of the store, particularly towards the front of the store. While it is a pet store and accidents will happen, many of the accidents don't get cleaned up. On my last visit, there were a lot of dried and fresh urine puddles in the aisles that were left ignored. One of my only reasons for coming to this location is their self-service pet washing station, which offers the lowest prices in the city for a pet wash ($10). They'll give you shampoo, conditioner, a towel, and a rubber wash mit (great for hair removal). The tub is nice and large, has a dishwasher-style sprayer, and has a dryer right next to it. It's a very basic, no-frills setup, but it's definitely worth the price. The only downside is how unpredictable the wait will be. If you show up and can use it right away, life is good. If you're stuck waiting behind one or two other people, prepare yourself for the long haul. The grooming staff will give you their best time estimate and offer to page you over the store PA system, but you're at the mercy of other pet owners. Last time I visited, the wait was definitely not worth the cost savings, so I headed elsewhere. read more

I've been coming to this Petco for over 10 years now! I'm always greeted by an employee when I enter the store. I frequent this store about 2x a week to get pet supplies and feeder crickets for my reptiles. The animals and fish that they sell are always in tip top condition and there cages are always spotless when I come. I can tell they really care about the quality and the condition of the animals that they sell. Jamie, Nick, and Katie are a Godsend when it comes to seeking advice about anything animal or supply related! Nick always greets me with a smile and he even remembers what I come in for and has it ready for me when I get to the checkout counter. Jamie has the sweetest kindest heart. She always ask how my pets are doing and if I have any updated pics to show her. Hands down they are one of the best pet supply chains in the triangle! read more

I came in to find a ferret to keep company to the one I just purchased 2 weeks ago over at another Petco. When I asked if I can get help with the ferrets the first thing I was told was they would only open the enclosure if I'm going to buy one. Then the manager Chris came over to help. Then proceeded to tell me as we are conversations about the nipping and biting that what she frowns upon. I proceeded to explain that there's ways of teaching them with out hitting or punishing them. Ex verbal cues and holding them in a proper way. Until you get the response you want. Then she says maybe that the ferrets there are not a right fit for me. That she doesn't have to sale any of them to me. Needles to say her attitude towards me the way she spoke down at me made me take my business elsewhere. read more

This store always has friendly & helpful employees, which is nice. Apparently they've changed their price matching policy...they will no longer look up their own website prices. It's their own website. But they won't look up the price even if you tell them exactly what the price is. It's not like I'm asking them to go look at all the random items I'm buying to see if any of them is cheaper on their website. If you want the Petco.com website price at the store, hopefully you already have a smartphone or a printer at home so you can prove to them what their own price is. For the past few times I have been to the Petco at this location, I have been disappointed in the management and the overall shopping experience. I say this because for starters, many of the items on shelves are in the wrong places, but the descriptions of the items match the items that are placed in their spots. This means that every time I take something new for my lizard's terrarium up to the front, they tell me it is full price because it was in the wrong spot. And they are always mislabeled. Another thing Petco is supposed to do is price check with other stores at the customer's request. When I brought up an item that was supposed to be only ten dollars at the other Petco, they told me that it wasn't an item that would price check like that because it was the other store's sale. Considering the point of the price check is to get that same sale on the exact same item, I feel a bit ripped off. When I requested that they call the store to do an actual price check, they refused and I ended up leaving upset at the service and with no new items that I needed. One thing that really irked me was the behavior of one of the store managers, or at least, who I thought was the manager. We needed help with the pricing, and he came out of the office and looked like we really made him mad for making him do work. Then, when he came back, he told me in a rude tone of voice that he indeed did have the item mislabeled, but I still had to pay the price in the system. Then he really seemed mad when I wanted him to price check with the South Point location. When he called, he basically told them that the price was the higher one and hung up. His attitude was completely rude in my opinion, and is one of the leading reasons I will not shop there again. It is sad that I am not going there because overall, the rest of the staff is helpful and nice, but he ruins it every time he is out of his office. I may shop there again if something is done about his attitude or if he is replaced. read more

The customer service is only provided by one woman(extremely nice) while the lovely store manager sits on her phone and the 2 boys, laugh and walk around the store while you are clearly waiting for service. This review is exclusively for their puppy training. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, and chose them solely for their price point, and a lack of affordable options in my immediate area. I had looked in to PetSmart, which is closer to my house, and was unimpressed the instructor and the number of puppies in the class. How can you expect a pup to focus with 8 other puppies in a class. The dog trainer, LIsa Wood, is amazing. She KNOWS dogs. She has been born and raised to be a dog trainer. She had our exuberant pup learning new tricks within minutes of meeting him. I like the approach of the Petsmart training as well. It is very treat based, but with a food focused mutt, it is what works best. She has spent her own time with us after class working with Bond about the inappropriate way that he greets other dogs. (Whining and barking and pulling and maybe growling, not cool) We are only 2 weeks in, and although there is another women in our class, we have never seen her, and we have had private lessons 2 weeks in a row! If you adopted your pup, bring your adoption paper work and ask at the counter for the free adoption packet. Inside, there is a coupon for $20.00 off a group class. We used our coupon and a special offer and paid only $69.00 for a 6 week class. Even though we have 3 other dogs at home, I feel that the refresher with a new puppy has helped me relearn how to train a puppy. It wasn't until I met Lisa that I knew that when you are teaching your pup "leave it," that you should not reward them with the thing they were leaving! How revolutionary. Now I will have a pup who knows that Leave it means leave it, not that I might give it to you in a bit if you wait me out. read more

Saw the "dog trainer" on staff hit a dog during a training session. It was her own dog but I'm still pretty sure there's no actual dog training philosophy that supports hitting an animal. If you're looking for a decent supply of pet stuff then this is your place, if you're looking for a dog trainer I recommend DarwinK9 with all my heart. Just your run of the mill big chain pet store but it's the employees who make it so great! They know all our animals, we got our sweet ferrets from them so long ago. We get our tortoise food their,anything special for dogs. A tip of you like to dress up your pets for holidays, go the day after. 30 bucks for a bee costume?? 5.57 On Nov 1st, shhh, it's a secret. Store is always clean, staff helpful and personable. I mention all this is it holds a special memory for Sophia and I. She wanted a little animal or something cuddly which was cool, I had sweet guinea pigs growing up but she fell love with a RAT of all things!! We named him Ziggy. When I first moved into the area I was thrilled there was a Petco only minutes from my house, at least until my first visit. These days I go to the Petco on Renaissance Parkway instead which may be a bit of a drive for me but its well worth the difference in the store. Now to be fair the reason I often go to Petco is for my needs related to my tropical fish tank. This location does not have a salt water fish section and although the fish section keeps salt water supplies it seems like absolutely no one knows anything about anything they stock. These days I only stop in here if I need something quickly and don't have time to make the trip to the other local Petco. It really is a shame this location doesn't do salt water because based on the other reviews people have posted it seems clear that for the stuff they are knowledgable about they do well at, but when it comes to tropical fish needs, even the most basic of needs this location is seriously lacking. read more

The best thing about this store is its amazing self service dog wash area! I took my dog here after a muddy day at the dog park. The staff was very friendly and helpful and got us set up quickly. You do need to provide proof of current rabies vaccination. The dog wash station includes a waist height metal wash tub (with ramp), hot water, long spray hose, shampoo, towels, a blow dryer, and aprons to protect you while washing your dog. It was fast, convenient, and a great bargain at $10! No bending over a tub at home and clogging the drain with dog hair, or cleaning up dirt flung all over the bathroom, or worse standing outside with a garden hose freezing. read more

Attentive staff make this Durham Petco feel like a small boutique, not a big store. I can think of at least four staff who have taken the time to: * LISTEN to my questions * Thoughtfully answer (asking for clarifications if needed) * Walk me through the store to point out my options, or tell me what I should get elsewhere if I need something they don't offer. If the store is busy and the person helping me needs to help someone else while I browse and think, they'll always check back to make sure I'm set. Extra-special shout out to Lisa the dog trainer, who rocks. I can't imagine this kind of help at the nearby PetSmart. Their staff are friendly enough, but they're always moving fast, or hard to find. Do not waste your time with the grooming salon. The only appointment they had was for 3 pm. I took the appointment for 3pm with the assurance I could drop my dogs off 30 minutes early since. I was told I could drop them off as early as 2 but I declined since 2:30 would allow me plenty of time to get to my next appointment. I went in today to be told that they couldn't take my dogs since I was late for my appointment at 2. I know I was scheduled for 3 since I confirmed it before I hung up with the associate. I was rudely told that I could reschedule but there was nothing they could do since I was late. I wasn't late since it wasn't even 3 and that was when my appointment was for. Do not waste your time with rude staff and a manager that can't even be bothered to answer calls. read more

This is a sad review since it involves some really unhealthy rats. I wanted pet rats for my daughter's birthday. I tried researching where to find healthy rats, and pretty much came up with nothing, so I figured I would go to Petco and just ask a lot of questions. The nice man that was helping me assured me of many things, these two being the most important: they get their rats from responsible breeders that keep the rats in good living conditions and they sell their rats for pets. I took home two little cuites. Bought them the rat manor. Gave them to my daughter- she was in love. THE VERY NEXT MORNING one little dude was gasping for air. We brought the rats back in. They took them, started antibiotics and said they'd be in touch (they also offered two different rats, but really, like those would be healthier?). They told us a few days later the rats would be on a two week round of antibiotics. Okee dokee. Two weeks later when I called, the guy said they needed 5 more days. I was like, man, c'mon. At this point maybe we need to just reconsider the rats, seeing that they are so ill. I said I'd think about what to do and call back. Well, he called back a bit later to say he was wrong. The vet had said "the reps" needed 5 more days, not the rats. The rats were good to go. We picked them up- they seemed fine. A mere 4 days later (Christmas Day- sad face) one rat seemed really ill and had blood coming out of his nose (though the other guy seemed fine). Upon closer inspection: LICE. Yes I said LICE. LICE LICE LICE So back they went for good- this rat situation has now traumatized my kid. I called and explained (to Nathan, a manager), they said of course they will refund me fully for the food and everything. So I come in, speak to a really nice, helpful, sympathetic female employee. Nathan sees me, says "I'll be with you in a minute" and then disappears... for 20 minutes. Where was he? Was there an emergency? Was he hurt? Looks of confusion from other employees as they page him and he still does not return (rest assured, Nathan was in fact fine, because he asked my husband if he needed help while my husband entertained the kids in the fish section). Then I saw him helping some other folks with their pet needs. It seems he just didn't want to deal with me, the lady who called and had been dealing with this big, sad rat situation for 2 1/2 weeks. So a different manager helped me (she was nice enough). But questions like "which rat is it you are concerned about?" while peering into a box with one vibrant rat and one sitting in the corner, heaving, literally DYING make me wonder: what the eff is wrong with Petco's managers? She refunded me, gave me some convoluted explanation for their illness (colds, winter, ferrets in the west with the flu...?) and that was that. So, they get their rats from horrible breeders that keep them in horrible conditions. AND THAY HAVE LICE. Do not go to Petco if you like animals, people. It's just pretty sick. read more

This is the second time at Petco for our dogs grooming. Was happy the 1st time but not this time. My one dog was completely shaved even though I told them to just trim the hair on his head and face. I don't think that they trimmed my other dog at all. Might look elsewhere next time. read more

I took my 90-lb golden retriever here for a bath and haircut, and it was the best he's gotten in his 5 years of life. First of all, it was $13 cheaper than PetSmart, and a about $30 cheaper than my vet had told me. The girl who did it was amazing- she was so friendly and loved my dog and asked me how I wanted it. She did a fantastic job, getting all his knots out, trimming inside his ears. And he feels cleaner than he usually does after his baths at other places. I can't say enough about this place! I went today to get vaccines for my dog at the Vetco (Petco) clinic. There were five people with one pet each in front of me in line. I waited more than one hour til my dog actually got the shots. The 3 yr rabies was $19, reasonable, but the bortadella shot was $32! My vet charges $16 for that shot, so their "LOW-cost clinic" price is DOUBLE the price of a regular vet. Waiting in a short line for an hour with a rambunctious pet was definitely not fun. I will never go back, to the clinic or the store. Stick with your vet and save yourself the gouging. The wholesale cost of that shot (a nasal spray actually) is about $3. They are taking advantage of low-income people by making it sound like they are helping the public save money.
