When I take Maisie out for walks, she likes to head over to Petco. Maisie loves going to Petco. The staff knows her. They stop for a couple of minutes to interact with her. They give her cookies, say hello to her. Of course, Maisie gets excited and loves the attention she gets from them. I find the Petco staff being very knowledgeable and helpful with products. They listen and provide alternatives. In the back, Petco houses a grooming area for pets. However, some of the prices can be a bit steep for average consumer. The prices for snacks, food, and harnesses look expensive. Petco offers training classes for dogs to learn basic commands. Maisie attended classes there. She loves getting the treats. The energy feels comfortable and relaxed there. read more

Recently moved to Chicago over a year ago. Our pup is definitely a California boy (like his dad). So we send him to California during the coldest months. That's where he usually gets his vet care and grooming. A routine formed over years. I have had frustrations with navigating the new system here in Chicago- and rarely seek "corporate" for his care. But I will say that we were finally able to get him groomed after months of (vaccine update maneuvering) we've merged updated info now . The care and concern that Angel and Wyatt took to ensure our pups well being was highly appreciated. I usually prefer local grooming businesses to corporate - and while I maintain that for all other needs - I will definitely trust Angel and Wyatt with our dog again. Additionally the Vetco care on the day we brought him in for an updated shot was great too. Thank you. The overall staff at this location seems great, knowledgeable, professional . Horrifying Experience at Petco Grooming - December 19, 11 AM Just before Christmas, I wanted my fur babies to look beautiful for the holidays and the New Year 2025. I had a truly horrifying experience at Petco on December 19 when I took my two dogs for grooming. I was booked with Vanessa, who I was told has 30 years of experience. She even assured me herself that she'd been working there for a very long time. This gave me some comfort as it was my first time trusting this place with my two fur babies. I was very specific in my instructions: just a basic grooming, please clean them up, and do not touch their tails. I wanted their tails to grow out fully and emphasized this multiple times. My plan was to see if I liked her work so I could decide on a new groomer. However, the results were nothing short of disastrous. When I picked up my dogs, I was shocked. Their grooming looked unprofessional, careless, and far from what I expected from someone with such experience. Worse, Vanessa avoided me completely--she rushed to the back of the grooming salon without saying a word. It felt like they knew the work was subpar and just wanted me to leave quickly before I could fully see what had been done. To make matters worse, they handed my dogs back to me without their harnesses, as if they were trying to rush me out. What horrified me the most was witnessing one of the groomers slap a dog hard on the temple. I felt the force of it from where I was standing and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was so shocked that I immediately reported it to headquarters and filed a complaint about animal cruelty. If no action is taken, I will escalate this to the news because no animal deserves to be treated this way. After bringing my dogs home, I noticed they seemed uneasy, as though they'd experienced something traumatic. As pet owners, we know when something is wrong with our animals--they speak to us in their own way, and it's our responsibility to listen. I urge anyone considering this location to think twice. I took my dog here for grooming and when I picked him up, his nose was bleeding. I asked them about it and they said he must have licked it too much (??). Of lesser concern, I also mentioned he had two mats behind his ears, and was told they'd brush out. The mats were still there when I picked him up. They did brush them out after I pointed this out, but after nearly three hours, I'm confused why he was still damp with mats behind his ears (especially given that I paid for an additional thirty minutes of brushing). The grooming was sub par, but the injury to his nose and their failure to mention it to me is inexcusable. read more

I think they could honestly take better care of their reptile enclosures and clean the poop out of them a bit more frequently. There's droppings all over the bearded dragon and gecko cages. There one cup of horn worms are shriveled up but still advertised out on stock for $10. I recommend ordering your hornworms from Dubia.com instead. Look, I know PetCo and PetSmart have a reputation for poor reptile care. Only my first beardie was bought at a petsmart. That's why we don't buy reptiles from them and only from breeders. I don't think that's stopping a lot of other uninformed people from doing so. Overall, probably useful in a pinch but try curious creatures for reptile adoption instead and order hornworms from Dubia.com. We normally get our Shih Tzu groomed closer to home, but she's quarantining at college with her big sister. Chose this Petco in a clutch. I was very nervous, because we build relationships with the folks who deal with our dog. I was pleasantly surprised by the service my daughter received when she took our cutie patootie to get groomed. There were only a couple downsides. One, calling to confirm the delivery of vet records was difficult. Petco sends you a text & email saying they need the vet records. When I called grooming, I literally was placed on hold for 15 mins. I had to hang up. Call back to the main line and ask for a store manager to go into the grooming section to find out how do I get the info sent. Two, there was a separate charge for matted hair, which I found weird. I'm used to paying $60 for our dog, so this itemized bill was weird. I would've respected just getting a bill for $60. Especially, considering my dog literally only had some mat behind her ears. Overall, my pootykins has a good visit. We will go again. This is a review of the PET GROOMING at Petco. I made an appointment online a day or so before which was super easy and quick. I brought my dog Lucy in, who can get really anxious with grooming (especially with her nails) and warned the staff of these tendencies. They were confident she'd be fine and got me out the door. I picked her up about an hour later and was delighted to hear she was (almost) an angel! They were able to get ALL of her nails clipped, teeth brushed, anal glands expressed...and wow, she was just not stinky anymore! While she was still pretty anxious and wanted to get out of the store, she still seemed super happy and I'll definitely be keeping Petco in mind for my last-minute grooming needs (or at least for her anal glands...can't beat $10)! read more

I've been going to this location for grooming for years and until today it's been great. The groomer Vanessa is outstanding, kind and very patient with my dog. This morning she had a helper named Maggie checking dogs in as it's a busy place. I had asked Vanessa for extra time during the groom so my dog could take breaks. My dog is 13 and has arthritis in her back legs and back pain too. Vanessa said that it would not be a problem and she would call when Kenzie was ready. Maggie the assistant came by to get my stubborn dog to bring her to a waiting area, but my dog resisted leaving as all dogs do, so instead of gently picking her up she pulled her by the leash as hard as she could. My dog ducked down and winced audibly from the pain she felt from the impact of being dragged back to the holding room. I composed myself and spoke to Vanessa who didn't see this happen. She told me that she was very sorry and they've "spoken to Maggie several times about NOT being so rough with the dogs". Oh my GOD there's a history of dog mistreatment/abuse and no one fired Maggie or reprimanded her? I spoke to manager and told her what had transpired and she assured me she would have a serious discussion with Maggie when she returned to work. To clarify, the groomer had nothing to do with this and is a terrific person. She is an excellent groomer too. read more

Selection was pretty good for cat food and I got just what I needed there. The conditions of the animal enclosures were just sad. I don't know if it's the whole chain or just this store, but the reptiles and birds were not in appropriate enclosures. Many of the habitats were mostly barren and looked like miserable places for the animals to live. I've worked in retail too so know that this often isn't the fault of the employees so I don't necessarily blame them, but someone higher up needs to be making sure this doesn't happen. There were four $600 conures, and at that price I don't expect them to be adopted too quickly. Why not give them a decent home while they're living in the store? The poor things' cages were almost empty; they must be bored out of their minds. Lots of arboreal reptiles and amphibians with nonplace to climb. Dead betta fish all over the shelves. So here is the thing, the store section is great! large selection, tons of treats. They have almost all kinds of pet foods. I was able to find a dry kitten food that doesn't contain starch from here. The store manager is amazing and super helpful. This review is solely for the grooming experience I had. I recently took in a kitten and found out the previous owner was just letting fleas leeching off the poor little thing. So being a noob I didn't want to traumatize the kitten so I brought him here, where I thought it would be professionals who can help bath him and trim his nails and also get rid of the fleas. The staff is super friendly, can't deny that. Wonderful people, but the job was so poorly done: -I saw them taking selfies with my kitten while he's all wet, uncovered, shivering. -he was given to me wet...a 6 week old kitten, wet! -there were still fleas on him afterwards, so I had to give him a bath myself... -his nails grew back so I wanted to trim them myself and bond with him a little more yesterday, and that's about 10 days since his last trim, the nail on his thumb is missing a HUGE chunk! which means they literally cut the nerves off my kitten's nail, traumatized him and made him bite and scratch the second his paws are touched. - They put tea tree oil in my kitten's ear, which I later found out was toxic to cats. Which caused him to vomit, have diarrhea, and disoriented. I had to take him to a vet. Basically anything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. read more

I get home and take it out of the box and start to blow it up only to realize not only is it not blowing up but it's already dirty and covered with hair.. Upon further inspection I realized the collar is covered with worms/parasites. I go to return it and the employees were disgusted and ready to give me some preventive heart worm medication for free... Only the manager.. ROB.. didn't want to give it to me for free. ROB also tried telling me it was a sead and not worms/parasites. The spineless manager couldn't be more dismissive of the issue at hand and deserves to be fired as he had zero compassion for my animal and the disgusting product they sold me. Eventually the other employees convinced him to give it to me for free. PLEASE CHECK ALL PRODUCTS LEAVING THIS STORE FOR WORMS AND PARASITES. I will not be returning to this disgusting branch of petco ever again. I would rather go to a newer branch that's worm free with managers who have common sense. read more

My dog fell in love w/her, and greets her when we arrive. Because Bichons are prone to have growth like moles as they age, she remembers all of his idiosyncrasies and proceeds accordingly. I saw Rosco through the glass before he saw me when I was picking him up, he was happy as can be tail wagging behind the counter. She brought up a small scab near his mouth (I already knew about it), but she wanted to make sure I did, I appreciate that. They need to go in, gut the place and completely renovate it. It's a sad situation because most of the employees are very friendly. The young lady working the cash register was super nice and others around the store were quick to say hello. This location has it's own parking lot which makes things nice & easy in the city. I went here for their Black Friday promo of getting a Dr. Seuss head costume with purchase and they only had size XL for dogs! It's sad that I should have to point out that NOT ONE of the interior photos in this listing are actually of the store this listing is for. I want to like this store. It's easy to get to compared to some other locations and most of the employees are well intentioned. If you're lucky to find someone who has somewhat of a clue, there's usually another issue lurking nearby that you will have to deal with. Before I get into the big issue, I will say that the staff are good about refunds. Unfortunately, this becomes a necessary practice (virtually no questions asked refunds) due to the kind of stock this store sells. I have been fully reimbursed for all the fish that have died on me, however, the time and effort put into caring for and treating what you could purchase here would be better spent researching better options to purchase from. I say this because I speak from experience. The issue is thus: Most of the pets they sell are sick. If you're lucky to get a pet that isn't full of diseases or parasites, you just won the PetCo lottery. I went here to see if they had female cherry barbs because my males had reached maturity, outnumbered the females in my tank and were going to start becoming more aggressive. I was unable to find female cherry barbs in stock at a PetSmart location I frequent and came in here to see what they had. Having bought many fish from here before, I tend to know what to expect... but this was a bit of a shock. When I walked in, I saw streaks on the glass of the aquariums that looked as if they wiped it down with a dirty, oily rag. Then when I checked the fish themselves, I saw several cherry barbs with ich (a parasite) covering their entire bodies. In other words, a very, very severe outbreak. Typically drastic measures are taken when visible signs of ich appear (one or two dots) on just the fins or tails of affected fish. I tried to flag down an employee to report this issue. Their "aquatics specialist" was not in and their staff vet was out for lunch, they said. In trying to explain to me what was done for the fish when they came in... they said they had that ONE that was closest to the front in a hospital tank in the back and put her back on display because she was "on the mend." Only there were multiple barbs that were severely infected. Slight problem with the "on the mend" statement as well. Ich is contagious and spreads by having affected fish contaminate the tank (and water) while visible signs are present. If the fish seemed to be "on the mend," the fish would have absolutely no signs of ich whatsoever. Each dot of ich is actually a cyst and the beginning of the life cycle of the parasite. It drops off, multiplies and becomes free floating theronts that attack fish. In other words, when you see white dots on a fish, the tank is already contaminated. I was told the fish also had "arrived that way." Which means they put infected fish directly into the display tanks to infect their existing stock. Knowing how the tank columns are set up, every pair of tanks from top to bottom is one water pool. 6 tanks now are full of ich because they couldn't be bothered to quarantine their incoming stock for sickness before putting them up on display. It's hard for me to figure out if this was incompetence or carelessness. I'd hate for it to be the latter because that's not how I'd like for anything that could be my pet to be treated beforehand. I took my senior chocolate lab (13 yrs old) to get groomed here Monday. And she hasn't stopped limping and babying her left leg since. Shes also allergic to the "all natural" shampoo they use, she's been biting her legs so much they are bleeding. Never again will I go here. The price is great and they seemed nice when I dropped her off and picked her up, but that's about it. I would rather pay quadruple the price at a dog boutique and know she's in good, gentle hands than ever come here again. Maybe it's okay for smaller, younger dogs that can handle their roughness. But I would not suggest for older more fragile ones. I will post a picture of her legs once she lets me close enough to them Hopefully the vet can get us some topical cream, senior dog pain Meds and suggest a more senior dog friendly groomer. Huuuuuur-tin'. That's the only way I can describe this Petco. I worked at Petco when I was in college as a stock manager. This location was a big deal store back in the day (I'm old). I went in today and was shocked by how worn down it looks. Hot mess. The floor looks like it has seen a war and all sorts of shit was broken in the fish section. We made our way through the employees standing around talking about the cost of rent and what bars they had been to that week and found ourselves in the small animal section. I was looking at a guinea pig that seemed a little wheezy when one of the children I had with me shouted, "look! A mouse sleeping in the food bowl!". I thought that sounded odd. I've kept mice and they wouldn't sleep in the... It was the eternal slumber. Rest in peace, mousie friend. Oh, and those other two dead mousie friends. I suspect that guinea pig will be following them shortly after, make room for him in small animal heaven. We turned around and left after that. This place is where good animals are sent to die.
