I took my 17 year old miniature schnauzer there to get him groomed. The groomer shaved off his eyebrows, and all his facial hair! He looked like a little lost lamb! He was my special boy and sadly I had to send him to heaven looking like that. It broke my heart. He was so handsome. read more

Petco values their POLICIES more than their CUSTOMERS. I bought a 75 gallon Aqueon filter in May of 2023. It stopped working yesterday. 7/3/23. I am an aquarium hobbyist of 20 years. I have been a customer of Petco through many, many, many managers. I asked for an even exchange for the filter and because of their 30 day NO exchange, refund, don't ask, question or inquire policy - would not even consider an exchange even tho they had three on the shelves. I needed to invest in another filter because I did not want my fish to die. After going through Petco Corporate Headquarters, I called Aqueon. This company stood by their product and I was able to speak to them as a solid customer of their product and got a satifactory resolution FROM AQUEON. Aqueon products are sold ONLINE. I would recommend buying these products online and NEVER going to PETCO for anything - ever!!!!!! Can exceptions be made?? Of course they can. Hello Petco! This could have been a much different review. I don't need to get anything at this store. I supported it through the 12-4 opening only hours. What a waste. Now I know - Now you know. Went here to buy cat food. Early Monday afternoon - store was quiet, only saw one employee on his phone at register. The store was messy, dirty floors untidy and under stocked shelves. I went to the ferret enclosure. The ferrets were cute but there was a pile of poop in their litter area. It didn't look like it had been cleaned for a day or two. They didn't have the brand of cat food that I was looking for. I got another type instead hoping that my cats would like it. Instead, I found, as I was walking out the door, that the food I had just bought was expired. I was able to get a full refund (the prompt service warrant the extra star) but really, who sells expired cat food? Petco, it isn't 2020 anymore. Increase your wages. Hire people to stock your store and clean your ferret enclosure. Don't think I'll be back as there are better pet store options all over Charlottesville. read more

I always bring my own bags, and the last two times, the checkout person stared blankly at my bag after ringing me up. When I didn't move, she asked if I wanted my purchases in the bag. Don't bother making an appointment. I showed up on time for grooming with my dog only to be told that the groomer my appointment was with had quit. They claimed to have called and texted me, but there was absolutely no contact attempt made. Over the previous days I received about 6 reminders of my grooming appointment and absolutely ZERO attempts by staff to tell me my appointment was cancelled. I was given no apology, not even a courtesy "Sorry." No wonder they can't keep staff. read more

I made my first appointment at Petco Grooming Salon because they had the first availability in my town (now I know why). I drove over to drop of my Maltipoo puppy. I spoke with one person and she was helpful. Then the groomer, Jes came out, sat in a chair, no smile, and said "address." I didn't even know she was talking to me. I tried to warm Jes up during this process by smiling but she was having none of it. She was miserable and never smiled once or addressed me like a human being, let alone a customer. When it got to the length of the cut, she said "how short do you want the cut." I had never been asked this precise direction before, not to give an exact length. I don't know what size clippers groomers have used in the past and my dog is not an AKC champion, so why does it need to be so exact? Jes referred to a nappy, matted, dirty, faux dog hair chart which looked like it would never represent what actually resulted from the clipper. I showed her a picture of his last cut. She just said "I can't tell length from a photo," and shut me down. No recommendation, no smile, no discussion. Jes was making it SO HARD for me to give her my business because we couldn't get through the hair length obstacle. If it was me, if i sensed a customer struggling with a question/decision, I would recommend a common length for the breed or looked at the dog and recommended a solution so we could move forward. I really don't think Jes wanted any more work and was going to do as little as possible to help the process. Finally, I was frustrated since she was supposed to be the "expert" and I pointed at a middle length on the chart. Jes could sense my frustration and said to me "If you don't want to be here, you should leave." And I did. My husband and I have bought lots of food and supplies at this store for YEARS for our three dogs, as does my mom and sister for their farm. It was our go-to pet store. We will never set foot in there again. I called the manager, David, to share my experience and all he said was "have a nice day." I have never seen a store work so hard to repel business. read more

Not a super big pet shop but it sells all the essentials. They have a nice selection of birds and mice. There's some beta fish, ferrets, and guinea pigs. No fancy rats though. There's not a whole ton of accessories for small animals compared to PetSmart. I found a hammock for my rats but couldn't find a nice house for them. Oh well. Prices are average, too, slightly more expensive than Pet Smart. I just get stuff here because it's in a convenient location and parking is great. Service is good, too! I have been taking my dogs to Petco in Charlottesville for years. They have always done a wonderful job on all of my pooches! I had Smokey groomed last week and he looks wonderful and had Sophia groomed just this past Sunday, 6/3/19, and she looks amazing! I really appreciate that the staff takes the extra time with Sophia as she is a rescue, is older and requires a little bit of extra attention. I would highly recommend this location for a grooming session for your pooch! read more

I brought my dog for grooming and provided staff with shampoo. Upon check out i was charged an additional 7 dollars. when asking for an explanation from the grooming salon, they could not provide me with one except that it was "policy". I was then transferred to the store manager "Carlos" (after holding for 10 minutes) who was extremely rude, provided the same "policy" explanation, raised his voice, would not provide me with his supervisors name and hung up on me. The grooming salon has many organizational issues to work out and have made many scheduling mistakes with us in the past, but we have tolerated this because the staff are all very sweet and usually do a good job. After this interaction, we will no longer be using Petco's services. read more

We have been using Jennifer to groom our dogs for years. We were disappointed when she left and thrilled when we heard she was back! She listens to the client and grooms the dog exactly as requested. We have an unusual breed a Long Haired Weimaraner. She requires very little trimming but Jen does a fabulous job trimming her long silky hair. read more

Jen in the Petco grooming department did a great job with my Newfoundland. I made sure to talk with her about exactly what I wanted done (and what I didn't want done), and she drew up a cost estimate, time estimate, and services list for me to sign off on. Everything was done exactly as we had discussed, and I paid exactly what I expected to after our consultation. My Newfie came back very happy and bouncy, with all of his dead undercoat blown out, all of the mats (he only had a few) either trimmed or brushed out, his feet and ankles trimmed nice and neat, and his nails trimmed. His paw pads even seemed softer, so they may have conditioned them or something---either way, very nice. I was also pleased to hear that they don't use heated cage dryers, which aren't the safest thing for certain dogs. You'll need to be pretty specific with them about what you want, because if you just ask for a big grooming package you might be getting services you don't necessarily want (for example, my dog doesn't need his nails rounded with the dremel tool, so I asked them for the nail trim only and avoided paying for the extra cost of the dremel). You also will need to be specific about exactly what you want trimmed and how close you want it trimmed; my guy's paws were trimmed a bit closer than I would have liked, but that only happened because it was our first time there and I asked them to "trim the fur around his paws" with no further instructions. An easy fix for the next visit! They're good at the big things, and if you take the time to lay out the details for the little things, they'll be sure to accommodate you. I was a bit apprehensive about taking my dog to a big chain store with in-house groomers, but after my experience I'm glad to recommend them. read more

Most Petco's are pretty typical, but Rebecca made my visit to this particular Petco so much easier. I brought my 11mo cat in to buy a new carrier because he'd outgrown his old one. What I didn't expect was for him to hide behind the shelves, scratch me, and refuse to come out. Rebecca helped me assemble the carrier I'd chosen, got me bandages for my scratches, and made sure that Tywin made it out of the shelves and into his new carrier. I would have been freaking out if it wasn't for her. Excellent service and such caring staff! read more

Just left Petco Groomers without any dog grooming for my Shih Tzu after having made a reservation. After looking my dog over, the lady decreed that my dog was too matted for them to safely cut her, and so I should send my dog to a vet. This has to be the most preposterous business interaction I have had in years with any company. The reason I bring my dogs there is BECAUSE they are matted and need to be shaved by professional groomers. Sometimes there is a nick or a small abrasion from such an encounter, but as a client I explicitly accept small cutting rashes when I indemnify the groomers as I sign on the dotted line. I love dogs and don't want them hurt from grooming but I've never had any of my dogs suffer unduly because of having their matts shaved off after 30 years of doing so. Does this groomer believe she is more caring and of my dog than I am merely because her standards of qualifying for her grooming services are so high?? Even more ridiculous is that it is COVID-Time and companies are starved for business that they have lost due to Covid. The manager asked me on the way out why my dog did not get groomed and I told him in indignant fashion about Petco's dysfunctional social justice warrior championing the rights of my small dog over the wishes of the owner - me. He muttered some pre-recorded apologetic platitudes like he could give a crap. After dozens of grooming appointments with Petco over the years I WILL NOT GO BACK. Don't be surprised to see some responses from a regional supervisor with an asinine offer of a future discount to placate me or more rehearsed apologies coming from their risk management to team so as to sound empathetic with mistreated customers (and dogs) - too late. read more

I cannot tell you how much I hate this store and their horrible employees. It is tragic that they cannot be given no stars. After selling me hundreds of gerbils one day they told me it is "immoral" to feed my snakes gerbils and refused to sell them to me. But yeah mice are fine. Since snakes wont eat mice after gerbils now I have send people in to pretend to by gerbils for pets... good times, good times. These people were so obnoxious and ridiculous they are like sit com version of a pet store employee, only it sure isn't funny when you have to deal with a condescending 7 dollar an hour employee with one molecule of power, insisting on using it to screw up your day. Very disappointed! After taking our Chow Chow here for 2 years, since she was a puppy and even had her trained there, they will not groom her. We show up at the grooming appointment and are told if she doesn't pass an assessment they can't see her. So, the young idiot associate, Courtney, tries to touch her head unexpectedly from the BACK. Of course she is going to snap. You are a stranger that startled her! Extremely disappointed and will not ever go back to a Petco for any reason! Any person who knows anything about a dog knows that a stranger should not try to touch any dogs head, whether unexpectedly or not especially if the dog can't see you trying to touch it! She should not be working there at least not in the grooming department! They need the other groomers they have had in the past. read more

As the owner of 2 dogs, I frequent pet stores and decided to choose Petco as my go-to. First off, the location is a bit tricky to get to if you're coming from north 29, especially during "rush hour," but is closest if you live on the south side of town. Once you do get to the store, you better know what it is you need, because the staff is oblivious. I work with animals as well and discovered I knew more than several different employees when I asked questions about products. Granted, most are very friendly, just not all that knowledgable. It's not the best place ever, but it's better than Pet Supplies Plus (awful employees) and closer than Petsmart if you live on the south side of town.. read more

I took my children to the Charlottesville Petco recently for fish. We looked at the selection for quite a while. I saw dead fish in several tanks. I should have walked away, but my kids were so excited and Charlottesville doesn't have another live fish store, to my knowledge. Anyway, we finally got some uninterested employ to retrieve my oldest son's fish. He did not act like he knew or cared one thing about the fish under his care. My younger son had his heart set on a Beta. My heart actually aches for those little guys kept in plastic containers. I don't see how this practice could be considered humane. And, less than an hour after we brought the guy home, he died. Still in the container. We didn't have the chance to put him in his new home as we were still testing the water and installing the air pump that we had also purchased. His heart was broken. This place is fine for pet food and supplies, but I really hate to know that they caring for live creatures. read more

I cannot tell you how great this store us compared to the other pet stores in town. They actually take their time to help you and explain the product. I went in to switch my dogs food from iams to a natural food. I choose natural balance since it was close to a price I can afford. As far as the person above Tanya, you think about maybe it's against their policy to sell a gerbil as food? If another store wants to then YAY for you. Next time get a rat. I wish I could just leave a review about one person but because I cant i have to review the whole store. The merchandise is super expensive i recommend you buy off amazon you can get the same products that would cost 20$ each at petco for 5$. So my mom told me i should go to petco to get my puppy's nail done because they brought both of are family dogs there there whole life and they have always been sensitive about there nails. But they brought them to a girl name jess who was good with dogs that bite to when there nails are trimmed. So i brought my puppy in and the lady i talked to was very nice but when picking him up the manager said I need to tell you some things telling me my puppy bit when getting nails done which is funny because my dads been doing his nails and all you have to do is get a little cheese and let him lick and you can do his nails in 3 minutes. And i have brought him to petsmart and there so good with him. But the lady told me he was biting which makes me think they probably didn't make him very uncomfortable mabye because they bring them into a back room where you cant see these strangers taking care of your dogs, Like i want a $10 per hour employee messing with my pups feet without me being able to see him. The manager told me that biting is very bad multiple times then proceeded to tell me that I cant bring him anywhere else if he didn't grow out of this which is a lie because I can bring him to places that don't suck. This was probably the worse customer service I've ever had and I wish i gave the manager a piece of my mind while i was there. I would recommend only jess if you go there she was so nice to my family dogs, and my mom said "she would've never said that to me". Don't bring puppy's to Petco i would highly recommend anywhere else. Also they didn't even finish the job, and my dog came out so sad, my family will not be bringing are dogs there ever again. read more

Jennifer is an excellent groomer! She does a beautiful job on my miniature poodle who had a bad experience as a puppy and who can be difficult to groom as a result. She is training him in a gentle way to behave; so now when I need to bathe him or touch up certain areas with clippers between groomings, he is MUCH better for me as well. I have had no issues with any of the other staff in the store. I have found them to be helpful and check me out efficiently as well. read more
