We ran into the Crate and Marrow table by happenstance at a Pro Re Nata winter market, and they were sweet enough to let our pup sniff all the goodies until he picked out the perfect bone for him! The No Hide bones they sell are made of only the most high quality ingredients, and they actually LAST! A great find. They even sent Tiger home with a little baggie of dried chicken strips on the house! We look forward to visiting the shop in person sometime soon. read more

This is the first place I go for anything dog related. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and their products are high-quality and fairly priced. They have a good assortment of natural treats and bones, and are great at making recommendations. I recently stopped in with a question about what type of harness/collar would keep my puppy from pulling on our walks. Daniel suggested that I bring her into the store so he could fit her for an Easy Walk harness. When I brought her in the next day, he made sure to find the perfect size and then showed me the difference it made, showing me how to walk her outside of the store. The change was incredible! Crate & Marrow's service and quality has made it my go-to. Definitely stop here before you consider going to a chain pet store! read more

I adore this store! It is the best place to buy high quality dog food in all of Charlottesville! They have a wonderful selection of raw food and high quality kibble (K9 Naturals, Primal, Blue Ridge Beef, Stella and Chewy's, Orijin, etc), super cute and extremely durable dog toys that last weeks to months, and just extremely pleasant customer service. Oh, and very "fresh from the farm" treats too, if you know what I mean, like chicken legs ;) I come in every few weeks to replenish our stock, and the gentleman that owns the store is always able to comment on the pros and cons of each product he offers -- and I really appreciate the honest perspective! I feel everything in the store has been carefully chosen and curated, and in addition, the prices are awesome. I get 11lbs of raw food for $50 dollars. If you go to Petco or anywhere else in Cville, prices are about double that. So check out Crate and Marrow... I think you'll love it too! read more

First: Full disclosure, this place is owned by the same interests who own All Things Pawssible, in case you have feelings (positive or negative) about that organization. I stopped in Crate and Marrow on a weekday afternoon and it was about what I expected. They specialize in high-quality foods (grain free, limited ingredient, and the like). There is a very limited selection of toys and collars - this place is very much a food and treat boutique. Their aesthetics are good. Very urban industrial feel with rustic wood touches. That being said, I don't buy my dog's food based on a store owner's decor. It is obvious they have a very scant inventory right now. I'm guessing they can't invest in 10-20 50lb bags until the know the business will be successful. This leads to a lot of small bags and one or two larger bags of each brand artfully arranged to fill the sales floor. No crates, no marrow bones (!), no food toys. Those were the big holes I noticed. They do carry my favorite brand of bait bags for training. Bottom line? I still prefer Natural Pet Essentials, although it's out of my way. This place has better hours but just doesn't have the inventory that makes NPE great. It's not a bad try and I'm always glad for another seller of wholesome food, but I wasn't wowed. read more

I went here to find better quality dog food. The employees are very nice and knowledgeable. I went back to get additional food and they were out of the size I wanted. They were getting it the next day and volunteered to bring it to me. This is fantasize customer service and I am now a customer for life. read more

What a delightful find! We are crazy performance dog people who spend an ungodly amount of time researching what goes into our dog's bowl and ways to use food for enrichment. We are extremely picky and loved this shop! However, even if you are a more laidback pet parent, we'd still highly recommend stopping by :). It's the best selection in Virginia we've found by far for dog treats, foods and supplements. Went here today for the second time and met the owner. This place is absolutely amazing! I am always looking for all natural/holistic pet shops. I have two German shepherds that are fed a raw diet and only get single or limited ingredient treats. This place has a ton of options for chews and treats with great prices (especially compared to other all natural pet stores) the owner was really nice, helpful, and friendly. Knowledgable and friendly family-run business. They really go out of their way to make customers (and their pets) feel welcome. And it's nice that so many other businesses at Stonefield are dog-friendly, so you can take your pup on your errands! I happened to find the shop shortly after Daniel opened it, and I don't think I've bought food anywhere else since then. Whether you're wondering what to feed a puppy, or how to soothe the sensitive tummy of an elder dog, they have great advice and they're exceptionally kind. Highly recommended. read more

I came here a few months ago to look for a gift for my sister's dog. The person at the counter was so nice and helped point out some things he thought were popular among others since I wasn't sure what to get. They had all kinds of inventory, from giant shrink-wrapped bones to a huge variety of natural/grain-less treats/food, a cool selection of leather/synthetic/Charlottesville-patterned leashes and leads for dogs and cats, as well as a variety of toys and other miscellaneous items. I bought a few things and when I came to the counter, the shop person offered to throw in a bag of all-natural food (one of those single/double meal types) for free with my purchase. So sad that I'm so far away from the store - I would go back again to get more gifts if I could. read more
