Review of the Grooming Salon. Stars given are because in terms of quality, my dog came out looking pretty standard in terms of Petco Grooming and I was content with the results. Read on to find out why I did not rate five stars.
TL;DR: Groomer was late starting, late finishing, and left my dog alone and unattended prior to the 6pm closing time.
My dog has been going to various Petco locations for grooming since he was old enough at 3 months. He is now 3 years old and has been to grooming at Petco in OH, DC, VA, and MI due to having to move often; regardless, we have never had a bad experience like this until now at this salon and it was our first experience at this location.
I had an appointment scheduled for 2:30 pm and had plans to go out of town immediately after he was done. At 2:28 I walked into the salon to drop him off and meet his groomer. The other groomers in the salon were unsure where my groomer was, so they paged her and we waited a few minutes but she didn't arrive, so another groomer got us checked in and she was very kind and helpful, the usual type of personality that Ive experienced with Petco. I was a little wary that our assigned groomer wasn't showing, especially since it was just past out appointment time now, but I had only ever had good experiences and everyone present seemed great. Since I had a lot to do, I dropped him off and confirmed that it would be about the standard 3 hours. I was told yes and that he wouldn't be longer than 6 pm since they close at that time and I needed to be back by then. I confirmed that was no problem and headed out.
By 5 pm, I still hadn't heard from them but this wasn't entirely unusual, so I headed over to check on him and just wait until he was finished. At 5:25, I walked into the salon and saw that he was still being brushed. It appeared like he was the only dog in the salon with just his assigned groomer present. She wasn't very friendly, just asked who I was there for and I replied that I was there for him. She told me "he has a lot of fur" (he does) and "it'll probably be 20 more minutes". Again, I was a little irritated since I know she didn't start at our appointment time, but again, I also know he is a Ton of work and this was his first time with her, so I said that was fine and would shop next door while she finished and I would be back before 6.
At 5:50, I went back to the store and saw his groomer leaving as I walked in. She looked at me and didn't say a word, just kept going. At this point I still didn't have a phone call, but considering I had been in the stores it was possible that my service hadn't cooperated. Still, I was annoyed that I wouldn't get a personal update from her on how everything went, but assumed I would get it from whoever was in the salon. Until I walked in the store and saw all the lights off in what looked like a totally empty salon. I slightly panicked, thinking my dog was locked in there, but the door was open and I went in, thinking maybe someone was in the back with him. But no one came out and I wasn't waiting around to find out, so I called to the cashier that my dog was unattended and I was here to pick him up. They called someone who arrived after a few minutes, apologizing but reassuring me that they have "policies" and stating that if the groomer has to leave, then she gets notified and she checks on the remaining dogs every ten minutes, which in my book is completely unacceptable. Anything can happen in ten minutes and a lot of dogs (mine included) do not do well when left alone. I was absolutely livid that he had been left unsupervised for who knows how long, plus would have been left longer if I hadn't been there until 6 when I was told the salon closed. I've worked in customer service my whole life, I understand not wanting to stay past your shift, but given the situation and the information I was given, I don't understand why a groomer felt the need to not only leave prior to 6 but to not even wait for me when I made it clear I was nearby. Additionally, he was there for at least 4 hours and was clearly never given water. I don't know if that's standard for Petco, but he drank an entire 16 oz of water when I picked him up which is Way more than he's ever drank after grooming. I'm not writing off Petco all together but I'll definitely never come to this location again. I'm still appalled at the situation and I think corporate needs to step in for retraining and possibly rehiring. I'm supposed to be able to trust that the people I'm leaving my dog with for extended periods of time actually care about him and will treat him with the absolute best care, but this location is definitely but up to par in that department. read more
