COVID RESPONSE UPDATE: Our pup Oliver has been feeling super cooped up over the last few months. Walks can only do so much and he was really restless and getting into some trouble around the house. He really needed some socialization so we decided to take him to BreedAbove for a play date. I called ahead to make sure his vaccines were up to date (it's been a while since he had been) and emailed the updated certificates to get him all set up. The next day we dropped him off and he was SO EXCITED he didn't even look back at me as they took him in. He had the best time and I was so happy to see him tired and satisfied. "He played hard with EVERYONE!" they told me when I picked him up! Pick up and drop off is all curbside and staff is masked. I was so happy to see some of our favorite staff members there after almost a year away, and they were just as excited to see Oliver, remembering him after all this time (they also remembered his sister Poppy, who is not so into playing with other dogs and stayed home with us). The windows are all decorated super cute with lots of positive notes painted on the side. I had to update my payment info since my card expired since last we were here and they came out to take the card and brought it back out to me so I didn't have to go inside at all. I ended up buying another batch of day passes for him and I'm excited to be able to drop him off easily and safely whenever he needs a little excitement. read more

(This is a review for their day stay program, not boarding.) Our two year old goldendoodle really loves coming here-- he always starts to whine with excitement as soon as we pull into the drive. I feel confident he is safe and having a great time. When we pick him up, he is always happy and exhausted. I appreciate that they temperament tested him before he could join: that gives me security that they are screening the dogs, watching their body language, and matching them based on temperament and play style. A few points of constructive feedback: the spa services are really expensive. For just a bath, they charged me more than an entire grooming costs (bath, haircut, nails, etc.) at our local groomer (also in west Ann Arbor). I will not be partaking in them in the future purely because the cost is so high compared to neighborhood rates. Also, a few times our dog has come home dirty, smelly, and covered with burrs. I understand this is a hazard of letting my dog go to daycare where I'm not watching him, but it does dampen the mood to know after a long day of work that I have to pick off burs and maybe give him a bath. Still, I am very happy this business exists and would recommend it to other dog owners, especially if you work from home and need a quiet, productive day. Breed Above has some great Covid policies in place right now. Their curbside drop off is run well. I toured the facility a few years ago when I needed to board my senior dog with unique social needs. They were very willing to accommodate her and I felt like she was being taken care of well. When we got a puppy in May, my first instinct was to take the puppy back to Breed Above for socialization. After a temperament test, he was placed into groups that would be good to build his confidence and socialization skills. I like that they don't just throw all the dogs into one big pack-- they really try to make sure that the groups will be beneficial for the dogs. It's not cheap to send our puppy there, but I guess you get what you pay for. read more

I've had a really positive experience with BreedAbove. Initially when I took my very timid puppy for temperament testing she did not pass so I reached out to the trainer, Chelsea and asked for support. Chelsea came to our house for four, one-on-one training sessions, got to know our puppy and set her up for success for the next time she went in for temperament testing. Since having her enrolled at BreedAbove our dog has shown great improvement in her social skills and is always excited to spend time at BreedAbove. The staff is wonderful, they are very knowledgeable about dogs and they take great care of Tessa. They always greet her with enthusiasm when we walk in the door. Tessa really loves it there and it has really helped her with her confidence in engaging with other dogs and people. read more

I'm glad business is good and there is no need for new business. Being a business minded person first impressions are so important. Knowledgeable staff, caring and listening to the customer and truly wanting my business is a must in your reception personal. I registered on their online program but when I arrived to ask some questions, I received a very cold shoulder. I gave my name and started to ask questions, but it was very apparent that she was not in the mood to actually figure out what I was looking for. I was told that based on my online registration I was added to the wait list but in looking at my vaccine records which I had uploaded, per their request, looked like hand notes not actual vaccine records and not actually from a vet. The puppy is 10 weeks old and bought from a very high-end breeder in which complete records were given. I mentioned to her that the following week our vet visit was happening to get any additional vaccines needed at his age as well as a clean bill of health. I then asked if she knew where we were on the waitlist to see if Breedabove was even an option with the needs we were going to require in the coming months. It was abrupt and an absolute no idea, our system does not allow us to see this info. Ok come on......... Maybe you cant but someone in authority could at least help us see if your facility was even an option. The bottom line is she never even found out what our needs were and to offer any kind of feedback on how they could supply these needs. Management step up your game. We do not live in an black and white world but your employees seem to think that is the world we live in. read more

Breed Above is an absolutely amazing boarding location for your pets! My dog is like my child and I felt absolutely comfortable leaving her here while I was out of town for an extended trip. I decided to look more into them when I saw how much effort was given to getting to know each dog as an individual (because, just like people, each dog is very unique and they understand and appreciate that). They pay attention to the specifics: what toys they like, where they like to be pet, what they don't like, what makes them uncomfortable - a truly in-depth personality assessment. We toured the facility before booking the stay and the owner took us throughout the entire facility. We saw dogs being boarded and staff attending to them as we walked around. It was really nice to see them in action and you could tell they were doing a wonderful job; everyone who works here seems to be a true dog lover and that is a MUST for me! From the moment I walked in the door I felt completely comfortable leaving my dog in their care and I knew she would feel safe, which was what was MOST important for me! They are VERY flexible and willing to meet the needs of each dog. They go above and beyond to make the stay as normal and familiar as possible for the dogs which just speaks to how in tune they are with these animals and their needs. Admittedly Breed Above is pricey, but I feel the cost is absolutely worth every penny. The facility is clean, safe, and, honestly, it is just beautiful. I was almost jealous of my dog's accommodations (and my accommodations cost a lot more)! read more

Although my dog was not accepted at breed above, I really appreciate the honest temperament test done by a certified dog trainer. My dog was going to another doggie day care and the 2-3 hour observation by the dog trainer at breed above alerted me to the fact that Cody was actually showing signs of stress. This was NEVER relayed to me at his usual daycare and to tell the truth I don't think they were really paying attention. I actually used this information to pull him out of doggie day care . I really appreciate the honest and professional evaluation. It was nice to know it wasn't just for the sole purpose of selling a service. From what I observed this is a top notch facility and the dogs seemed to really enjoy it. read more

Teddy The Australian has been excited to see his friends at Breed Above since he was 5 months old. He comes home tired and satisfied. He sleeps well after a day visit. He has stayed overnight for a few days too. He had a packet of classes where the last one I attended and since than he heals and listens to commands better. The positives is you never have to schedule just show up. They know your dogs name and they give each special attention The negatives is he did get croup cough late September even though he is vaccinated. Very expensive. We had our 1-year-old, very energetic pup stay here for an extended weekend. We were willing to spend the $60+/night boarding fee because this place advertises that they train the dogs while boarding them, and our dog was still learning to socialize. (Side note: We personally cared less about the "amenities" that this place has (day spa, real beds w/tvs for the dogs), but I guess some people would feel that those extras make the steep prices worth it.) When I came to pick our dog up after the 5-day stay, the owner of the place came out and told me that our dog had displayed aggressive behavior (no other dog expert -- or any other person -- has made this claim), and that they had isolated her for the last 2-3 days of the stay. They took her for walks and played with her, but kept her from playing with other dogs. Our dog has never shown aggression towards another dog, but she does have a lot of energy and needs A LOT of exercise. So not only did they not help her learn to socialize with other dogs, they also kept her from letting out her energy. I was already upset with Breed Above for isolating my dog for the weekend without calling to tell us that she wasn't playing up to their standards, but then the owner tried to upsell me on (very expensive) 1:1 coaching to help our dog learn how to play with other dogs. I was not there that weekend to witness my dog's behavior, so I can't for sure say that they were in the wrong for "isolating" her. However, I would have appreciated a phone call during the weekend, as well as a bit more effort on their part to allow our dog to socialize. This place seems to be a favorite for people who want their pets to be pampered with luxury. For those who have dogs that like to run and wrestle and behave like, well, dogs, there are more suitable (and affordable) alternatives. read more

I've been taking my dog here for over two years now. I shopped around for different daycares in the area and BreedAbove is by far the best (she got warts at another place!). My dog, Yoshi, can be a handful. They have worked with me to get her in a good routine. The workers give me an update as to her day and if there are things she needs to work on. As a single person with a dog, it sometimes can be difficult to give her the attention she needs when I'm working long hours or have other obligations. A wonderful work opportunity came my way in the fall and the only reason I was able to accept it was because BreedAbove offered the taxi service. It is expensive but you get what you pay for. I took my dog there on Friday for two nights while I attended a funeral/memorial service up north. She was a happy and healthy dog on Friday. On Sunday when I picked her up, she was not, and still isn't. She has been vomiting and having diarrhea since she got home. On day 3 now. Including blood in her stool. She is refusing to eat or drink and a trip to the ER Vet last night showed her entire GI tract is inflamed. A Breed Above claims she was perfectly fine during her stay and only ate the foot I provided. This cannot be true considering her state. Talking to some friends at work (UM), I find that this is not an isolated incident. They are causing our pets harm. Not all of them, but enough of them. And they are not claiming any responsibility. Always denying anything was wrong while in their care, even when a pet comes home covered in dried feces, they claim it just happened, which is not true as it took a soaking to get the caked feces out of a short hair's coat, in one particular case. They may have killed my beloved pet. Stay clear. read more

Since this business was sold, the quality of care and service has gone downhill very fast. My wife and I have been taking our dog to Breed Above for years. The original owner of the business ran a pretty tight ship. The facility was clean and the animals were cared for well. Although expensive, we had no complaints. Since the original owner sold out, things have gone down hill fast. Just about every time our dog has stayed overnight, our dog comes home with some sort of illness. We currently have a young, normally healthy dog. The illness is usually kennel cough, however, our dog just came home with giardia. Keep in mind that giardia is typically spread to animals through water tainted with feces... This recent illness occurred while our dog was at Breed Above for a week while our family went on vacation. During this time period, our dog lost 5 pounds and had constant diarrhea while at Breed Above. Of course, no one from Breed Above called us with any concerns, nor did they bother to take our dog to his listed veterinarian at The Ann Arbor Animal Hospital which is literally a quarter mile away. Combine all of this with the fact that it's 2019, and Breed Above still does not have any web cameras where pet owners can randomly check in on their animals. HHHMMMM, I wonder why??? I wonder what Breed Above doesn't want their customers to see? If you care about the health and well being of your pet, stay away from this business and shop around for some place better. Otherwise you'll be spending a lot of money on both boarding and veterinarian bills. read more

We have been sending our little dachshund, Goldie, to Breed Above since it first opened. We had been looking for a new doggie daycare, as our previous experience in doggie daycare land, was not a pleasant one. Our search criteria included physical safety for our dog; a stimulating environment and a caring and watchful staff. From the moment I walked in the door until today, all of that criteria and more have been met! Furthermore, Breed Above has great hours, grooming services on site and is on our beaten path to and fro work! To sum it up---Breed Above offers great service, an awesomely friendly staff, flexibility and an affection for dogs that is both delightful and genuine. We can't imagine going anywhere else. Our dog was recently bit, and most importantly, the staff had no idea! We picked him up from day stay and found a patch of fur and skin missing on his side. He needed a decent amount of stitches. He's a big Newfoundland, and some dogs don't like his size, so they bite at him. We understand that, and have actually come to expect it. We did, however, expect for the staff to be watching him. Why in the world would we pay to drop our dog off at breed above if no one is watching him? In addition, breed above did not reach out to check on our dogs condition after the initial phone call to let us know they would cover the vet bill. We have been regular customers since our 3 year old was a puppy, but the staff has completely changed in the last year. The people that loved our dog and were excited to see him are no longer there, and now when we walk in, no one recognizes our dog- which is impressive as he is a 130 lbs. brown and white land-seer Newfoundland. Needless to say, we won't be coming back and don't recommend this place. We usually don't bother to leave reviews, however this is something I would want to know before leaving my dog in someone else's care. read more

I thought we would love using Breed Above for our dog's boarding and grooming. The place seems so nice and centrally located. I've used their grooming services twice, and boarded my dog for a long stay once. They would not give me a price for my dog over the phone on dog grooming, so I had to bring my dog in for a price. The groomer looked him over and said it would be about $65. When I returned to pick him up, I was charged $80. This annoyed me, but I did not voice my opinion as I just decided the extra would be her tip. Then, the person running my charge card asked me if I would like to add a tip on for the groomer-RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GROOMER! I couldn't believe it-how rude. Even on his stay with Breed Above, the checkout bill was a good 15% more than I anticipated. I think this place is really catering more to making the dog owner feel less guilty about leaving their dogs than the actual pets themselves. Dogs just want a comfortable place to sleep and to have fun. I have since found another kennel in the area that loves dogs and respects their clients for half the price. On Monday Jan 20, we submitted our application, in hopes that we'd eventually get our puppy into a class and for boarding. The app said we'd hear back in 48 hours. By Friday that week, we still hadn't heard back so I called, and was told that they were swamped with new apps and that we would hear back on Monday. Late Monday someone called and left a voicemail on my phone. When I called back on Tuesday the woman I spoke with couldn't find our application. She put me on hold several times to try and look for it. She blamed it on there being a lot of new employees. I was then told I would hear back the next day, and after 2 weeks, have never heard back. If they can't keep track of my paperwork, I have zero trust in them to take care of my dog. read more

We've been bringing our puppy (who is now seven months old) to Breed Above for their "Day Stay" program for the last four months. It's a relief knowing that our dog is in good hands on our longest and busiest days. Their hours make it very easy for us to drop her off before work and to pick her up after - even when we have early or late meetings. On our tour, we were able to check the entire place out, and I was AMAZED by how clean and orderly it was - we've been to doggie daycares before that were, quite frankly, a little scary, but Breed Above's facility is lovely! We love that there's both indoor and outdoor space, and that they cater to each dog's individual needs. The price is a little steeper than some doggie daycares, but the comparison of quality makes that point absolutely moot. The staff is always friendly to us, but, even more importantly, they're FANTASTIC with our dog. She's so ECSTATIC on her "school" days that she's even figured out what the word means! She can't wait into the building and check in with all of her friends. When she comes home, she spends the rest of night happily and peacefully sleeping off all the fun she's had. Additionally, they do a wonderful job of teaching her household manners and socializing her with both people and other dogs, giving her both the opportunity to both play AND learn. We love that they have a mini-store up front, and only wish that they carried our brand! If they carried Acana and/or Orijen, we'd definitely make our purchases there (particularly when we forget to pack her lunch)! We're also looking forward to their upcoming coffee bar. We recommend Breed Above to ANYONE who asks. With as much as our dog loves it, we're sure to come back for years and years! read more

10/20 - Cannot recommend this place as I took my pup there for a trial night with 2 day stays and she came home with Kennel Cough. I took her to the vet today and they said they have seen more than 5 cases alone today. I called Breed Above and they didn't seem to care much. I drove by the place today and saw that it was filled with dogs. I get that kennel cough is sometimes inevitable, but I would expect that they would take greater care to perhaps close down the facility and sanitize it once it is confirmed that they have several cases. I will say that the facility itself seems nice and I do believe they take a lot of precautions to try and keep the dogs healthy (verifying vaccinations, temperament tests and trial runs). However, the main reason that I would not entertain using this place is again their lack of empathy for my dog getting ill, and clearly they are not preventing other dogs from coming to the kennel to help stop the spread. read more

We have been taking our dogs to Breed Above ever since it opened and they have provided loving care. Our elderly dog was given special attention and extra rest times during his stays. We were a little disappointed to receive no acknowledgement from Breed Above when he passed away at age 17. We thought he was more special to them than he apparently was. We did receive cards from our veterinarians and the emergency care facility when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge after so many years. Our new dog has received excellent care, and being at Breed Above has enhanced her social skills with other dogs. We are grateful to have this care option when we need it, even though it is pricey. read more

We've been taking our boy, Brinks, here for over a year. We visited several facilities prior to choosing BreedAbove. Many facilities just had pens or rooms where the dogs would chase each other all day or they would let them roll in mud in a yard that was not cleaned of waste. We were looking for a place with higher standards. When we met the staff here we knew they would care for Brinks the way we do. The facility is clean and safe. They listen to special requests for daycare and overnight boarding...this was particularly nice when we boarded Brinks for the 1st time and I was a nervous wreck leaving him. One of the most important requirements for a daycare for us was a facility that had experience with large or giant breed dogs. BreedAbove has played an important role in raising a well-socialized, well-behaved pup. They are careful not to overextend playtime and they give individual attention to all of the "kids" that attend. We trust BreedAbove and highly recommend them to others. read more

Breed Above is an amazing facility! My black lab is SO happy to go and play there and I have piece of mind that she is being well cared for. After having bad experiences with the prior daycares, it was important that we find the right "school" for our puppy. To start, this place really gets to know your dog - what they like, what makes them uncomfortable - a several hour long personality assessment takes place. They also had us fill out extensive paperwork so that they have our input as well. Additionally, they are very particular about making sure that shots are up to date and dogs are cared for appropriately. This facility has a curriculum which is great - i giggle about the fact that my dog has a curriculum, but it seems to work well for them. they work daily on obedience and try to get the dogs to have basic manners. They redirect behavior and are positive reinforcement oriented. The dogs come in the AM and play in their designated play group (which they determine based on who attends that day and what your dog prefers) and then at lunch time, if your dog eats lunch, they can eat and then they have a nap time. The dogs get their own mat to lay on and relax for a while. They use the same philosophy that parents often use with toddlers - if toddlers don't get rest midday, they are terrors - so are dogs! then in the afternoon, they have more time to play. When it is time to pick up, the dogs get wiped down and then they go home. it is really nice that the dog doesn't smell like pee/poop/nasty when I pick her up... Another touch that I really appreciate is that the handler spends 5 minutes with you when you pick up - they communicate what happened during the day, what your dog really enjoyed or if there were any concerns. This really makes me feel good that she is being monitored and cared for to the level that I feel she deserves. This company also seems to hire really strong associates. They come ready to work and interact with the dogs. They also all look clean and well dressed (not the "just-released-from-prison-look" I had become accustomed to at our old facility). I can't say enough good stuff about this place! I am really appreciative that I know Chelsea is having a great time in a safe, clean environment, surrounded by true dog lovers. This is a fancy, boutique hotel for dogs (complete with lobby for their humans). The minute we turn into the parking lot, our dog begins to jump for joy. He goes for short stays, long stays while we're out of town and for his grooming. Our dog knows the staff, runs to great each person and then is off to play with his friends. This is a really excellent place--and if you just want to know how your dog baby is doing while you're gone, they will let you call anytime to check :) read more

We call BreedAbove our "doggy daycare," but that doesn't even begin to describe what this company does. We've been bringing our 2 year-old rescue dog, Amos, to Jocelyn and her crew since we first adopted him as a stray from the Huron Valley Humane Society. They were quick to figure out Amos's issues (severe separation anxiety) and work with him to make him more comfortable and secure. We love taking Amos to them 1-2 times a week for their "daystay" program, after which he always comes home happy and exhausted. And their "nightstay" program is worth every penny. My poor clingy dog has been treated phenomenally well by this staff, where they go so far as to sleep on the floor with him when he won't settle down in his "suite". This is a company that will go above and beyond for their clients and their pets. Customer service is clearly their priority, and their love of dogs shines through in everything they do. I began taking my dogs, both rescues, to Breed Above several months ago. I use their hotel service as well as the day stay program. One of my dogs had no socialization prior to adopting her. Since she began her weekly visits to Breed Above, I have noticed a significantly positive change in how she handles being around new people. Our dog, a now-10-month-old lab/boxer/cattle dog mix, has been attending BreedAbove's DayStay Program a couple days a week for about a month. We love it. Honestly, we weren't prepared for our dog's energy level when we adopted him as a 6-month-old puppy, and we were struggling to give him multiple hours of exercise each day while also working on obedience and, well, holding down jobs! Since he started going to BreedAbove, he's become calmer and much better behaved and more relaxed around both our cats and dogs he meets on walks. (He's always loved other dogs, but struggled to contain his excitement whenever he saw one.) While some of this is surely due to him growing older, I give a lot of credit to the folks at BreedAbove as well: they clearly understand and care about the animals. While more expensive than other options in the area, we really couldn't be happier - highly recommended! read more

This place is wonderful! Our dog absolutely loves coming for daycare here and has stayed over night numerous times while we have been out of town. The daystay program is a great chance for our dog to socialize and get all his puppy energy out while also getting behavior training along the way. Dogs have to go through a 1/2 day of behavior testing before they can stay and play, which shows me that they really care about the health and safety of the dogs in their care. Both the front of the house staff and the trainers are wonderful to deal with and are always willing to impart information about how the day went and we always have a tired and happy puppy to take home at the end of the day. The night stay program has also been a great resource for us. Our dog has stayed there twice now for about 10 days at a time and has also done shorter weekends there. The staff have never minded us calling to check in on how our dog is doing. Over this last 10 day stint, one of the trainers even emailed us pictures of our dog at play :) The staff are also very aware of their guests' medical needs- our dog is heat sensitive and they make a point of letting us know that they will keep and eye out for him and keep his temp regulated on hot days. All in all, very clean, competent and polite staff, wonderful facilities. This place has become one of the essential components of our dog's wellbeing! read more

We have a very spirited young dog, Daisy, who is 20 months old and her energy and enthusiasm sometimes overwhelms other dogs. We are having her spend some time with a one-on-one coach, Cynthia, to help her learn some impulse control and to be able to interact/socialize in groups and with individual dogs successfully. After the first 4-hour session with the coach, I noticed over the following days during walks with Daisy, that her leash walking had improved significantly. She does fine on the leash, sometimes pulls forward or lags behind but after that first session, she walked next to me on a loose leash for most of the walk. She also demonstrated a huge improvement in her behavior in a group of dogs after just two sessions. I'm very happy with the professionalism and quality work done by the trainers and staff/caregivers. Daisy also LOVES to go to Breed Above. She pulls me in the door (still working on the loose leash walking into Breed Above! :-) We've been taking Daisy to Breed Above since she was about 4 months old and have been consistently happy with the care that she has gotten. She has stayed for overnights several times and has been in the play groups and I have always felt entirely comfortable leaving her there. The facility is spotlessly clean, the staff are professional and friendly and the dogs appear generally happy and relaxed. I have also observed the training and "manners lessons" occurring throughout the day during the day-stay program. We also took a course from Maria (the certified dog trainer on staff) called Adult Basic Manners and were very happy with it. We recieved a lot of valuable training information and practice time, and Daisy had definite improvements in her behavior from things that we learned in the class. The only reason that I couldn't give 5 stars is that for me and my financial situation, the cost for the day-stay and overnight stays are a bit high, but for the training sessions with Cynthia and classes with Maria the cost is very reasonable considering the exceptional quality care and training that the dogs receive. read more

I was very impressed with this facility the moment I opened their doors. It is amazingly clean, the staff is friendly and treats your dog like family. We have been bringing our puppy here. He stayed for 10 days without any issues. I definitely recommend this facility. We plan on this being our dog's home away from home! You will not be disappointed...worth the cost. read more

At first glance Breed Above is an aesthetically pleasing building with friendly employees behind the desk. Unfortunately despite 'priding' themselves in not judging dogs by their breed, they have been the only doggie daycare in Ann Arbor with a trainer that openly generalized that "anytime a bully breed vs a golden retriever come into a daycare one is going to have a harder time." This is just false. I own both a golden and a pit mix and my golden has severe dog fear while my pit is completely socialized. I've heard from multiple people and experienced myself that after PASSING a temperament test and getting into a rhythm of attending day stays, they then tell you that the dog needs additional attention and require you to pay around $80/day. That is absurdly expensive and unnecessary for a little extra hands on help, which they claim to provide if you just read their website. Also FYI there is only pavement, no grass. All in all: If you have a low energy dog who doesn't engage in much play then you'll probably have a fine experience, but if you have dog who likes to actually play, like a dog, don't waste your money. read more

So expensive for a place that has absolutely no grass for the dogs to play on. The former parking lot they use is just awful for the dogs. No comfortable place to lie down or to play. Super hot on the paws even with the cheap awning over head, in the summer and no real room to run. The dogs all looked miserable- when I visited. The staff are so snooty and rude! I think they believe the people are a breed above the dogs... not so much. They are treated like cattle. I thought that I really liked this place but a few months ago my 1 year old dog came down with kennel cough (just 2 months after she had her yearly vaccine!). The only place she had been going to with other dogs around was this place. I've never had a dog with kennel cough so for about a week she had the cough without me knowing what exactly it was. She went to BreedAbove twice during that time and no one said anything to me about kennel cough going around or that my dog was coughing unusually. I feel terrible because my dog probably infected a few other dogs and I could've prevented that had they said something to me. I'm really bummed because they were great with my dog and she seemed to really enjoy being there. I still haven't decided if I will take her back or not. This place seems to be the best of the Ann Arbor options, I just wish they would've been more honest about the kennel cough that was going around. read more
