I come here once a week for crickets to feed my leopard gecko and things for my dog/cat. Never had an issue and I recommend it

5 stars I called and visited a few other local pet stores before stumbling upon Pet Mart--and I was genuinely blown away by this small business. Unlike the others, they actually answered the phone, answered my question clearly, and even double-checked inventory for me before I came in. When I arrived, the store was fully stocked with all kinds of pet supplies--and they even had some adorable pets for sale! Best of all, they had exactly what I needed in stock, so I didn't have to wait for shipping or run around town to find it. They're the worst when it comes to customer service, they don't answer their phones, animal cages stink and aren't clean, animal welfare is sub par. It's never been a good store but it has only gotten worse over the years. read more

Animals are neglected, there was a mouse in the food bowl and it was dead, rats were kept together in 20 gallon tanks with little mental stimulation, there was about five to ten rats in a single enclosure and they were fully grown. At the front of the store an employee was holding hamsters and showing shoppers the hamsters while letting them hold and poke the hamsters around if they wanted to, the employee was holding them in a manner where they could have easily been injured. The hamsters were also very scared. The hamsters as well were kept in very small tanks only this time there were about ten to twenty hamsters per enclosure. Both the hamsters, rats and mice lacked a decent amount of food water and proper bedding. Because of the way they are treated they are very prone to infections, and diseases. The reptiles were also treated in a similar manner, they had a lack of food, water, and proper bedding. They seemed very stressed and they were all house together in very small tanks. They lacked the lights that are required for them. the sun is what is needed in the wild for these cold blooded reptiles to have the proper ability to get calcium from their food. Without this they can develop calcium deficiencies and get ill and possibly die. So, in this case having a reptile light is absolutely essential for these creatures to thrive. There were kittens as well and they were kept in a rat cage and had little food, the food that was there was very dry, the kittens also lacked mental stimulation (essential for their development as they grow) and they did not have a proper water source, with the small bowl that those two kittens share they will dehydrate and get very ill or die. read more

I decided to support small local business and bought treats to my dog. To my surprise the food was almost two years expired and caused my dog to have seizures for two days! I went back to return and get a refund and the first employee said that he couldn't do it and to come back Tuesday when management was at the store. I went back Tuesday and was welcomed by a very rude employee who said the money was retired to my debit card, despite the receipt saying cancelled. Then he insisted I get store credit and that if I really needed the ten dollars he would "get it out of his wallet and give it to me". After asking multiple times to speak to management he simply gave me $10 from the cash register and said bye. read more

Living in Southbay we are lucky to have a pet store that Carrie's items for animals including reptiles small pets Guinea pigs and rabbits. They also carry feeders for the reptiles I'm quite a nice variety of reptiles that always look healthy. They're a little expensive compared to online purchases but less than the other pet stores in town. They carry specialty items heat lamps, bedding, roaches and superworms, harness, vitamins .... They dont carry chicken feed or horse food. They do have every kind of dog and cat food available, grains, Wheat bran, toys for birds and small pets, toys for dogs and cats. They're worth going in and checking out they also have a mobile pet vet that is there on certain weekends and you can walk in the store and they have a flyer that tells you when you can bring your pet down for shots which is really a nice thing for pet owners. I would give them 4 stars simply for it's size and lack of chicken feed and horse cookies. That wouldn't be fair. The staff is very nice, the pets are well taken care of, their hours of operation are really good and the store is cleaned and well stocked. They also don't try to get upscale you at every conversation. read more

I have had a better experience ever since my last review so here's an update: I only go in once a week for rats, which are are readily available in the front. Up until a few months ago they used to be in a bin on the bottom, now they're in a glass tank. When it's hot they obviously run out quicker since our little pet snakes eat more, but other than that I have almost always found one on my weekly visit. The lady in the front who is usually there on the weekends is very nice and I haven't had any issues :) Please note, there is a credit card minimum. read more

New in town and this was the closest pet store so thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake! Pet market is selling trash. I purchased a new extender leash today along with a harness and collar. The harness is sized totally incorrectly and poorly fitted. My dog normally wears a small, I bought the medium and the neck area hardly fits! But the worst part is the extender leash. The way it was packaged hid its poor quality. This thing looks like it was put today in the back room with scraps and string. The leash was literally a long sting tied to a hook at the end! What kind of bs is this?! This isn't safe, let alone ever usable! This place should be shut down. I heard them trying to sell a kitten for $125 to the customer in front of me too. I usually go this store to buy supplies for my dog and I decided to buy some treats. You'd think for $10 you'd good high quality treats. I gave my dog the treats and the next day he starting have SEIZURES. I check the treats and they're EXPIRED SINCE 2019. Not only that but the customer service was horrible when I went to go return them. I go the next day and the employee told me to return another day when management was in. So I left and came back when management was supposedly there. I ask for my refund and the employee LOUIE said "it's just a really long process to return to the debit card are you sure you don't just want to take a $10 item from the store". Obviously I don't want to, I don't trust this store anymore. This employee said "if you really want $10 I'll take out my wallet and give it to you". One Star for convenient location and plenty of parking. Other than that, the supplies are so-so and prices are nothing to write home about. As an aside, it seems many of the animals for sale here are housed in conditions that leave alot to be desired (rats crowded into multi-level wire cages, snakes tucked into very small pull-out drawers, that kinda thing). On one visit, there were small reptiles gasping for air and dying in a tank (one had been dead for a while), the overpriced mix-breed kittens looked like they had upper respiratory infections, and there were hamsters missing clumps of fur. To be fair, the condition of the animals was marginally better the last few times I've been in, but it's still not great. My sister bought a puppy advertised as a purebred Chihuahua from this store, and not only is he just a mutt-looking chi mix, but he has health problems and a nasty temperament -- he's been taking bites out of people since his eight week birthday. He was clearly not bred for sound temperament or health, and for $300 one would hope that this would be the case. You're better off adopting from a local shelter and then going to PETCO for the supplies. read more

I honestly think Yelp should add a 0 or no stars option. This place is overpriced, smelly, and unfair. Most of the employees who work there do not have any knowledge about taking care of pets, on top of that they aren't very helpful and rude. If you purhcase a pet and it dies, they do not give you a refund, they'll say it's your fault. I wanted to return something, and all they gave me is store credit no cash refunds. Oh forgot, you don't have your choice to pick for fish; they scoop it out, and that's yours to keep. I do not know why this place is still operating. You're better off going to Petco or Petsmart, you get discounts & way better experience than this greedy, hungry, money-hogging pet shop. read more

This is a pathetic attempt at a pet store. Any real animal lover could take one step inside and see how bad it is. They carry almost no current equipment, their animals look sad, customer service is a bust. I'm not sure what their saving grace is here aside from the fact that they're near me which isn't enough for me to elect going here. i do not recommend this place, i went in to look for a hamster and there was about 10-15 in a cage fighting, one was injured and not getting help from the people. when i had told them that is was hurt they said no they are ok. i've had a hamster for about 4 years and they don't do that. not ok take care of your animals. read more

For one, there is no reason to purchase a dog when so many in shelters need a home. For this reason I usually shop at Petco/Petsmart who do a lot of good for non-profits that benefit homeless pets. I had to stop in here to get some dog food when I was in the area and didn't know where else to go. The animals definitely need to be kept in better conditions. read more

WORSE service EVER. I came in ready to purchase a kitten and somehow the female employee working there right now couldn't sell it due to not having a contract for it. Then why are the kittens on display?? I asked if she could call a manager to inform them that I am more than ready to buy their kitten and can put money down or come back later and her reply was "I don't have a contract." She told me I had to come back and wait until 7pm when a manager is there and they close at 8pm. How does that make any sense? I am a very avid cat person, i love animals, and at first, when we found our little missy we were overjoyed with happyness, So lovable, But then, After we took her back to our house, well, its evadent that they took very little care of there Animals. I went half an hour before closing time to pick up some food for my pups and the front counter girl was too busy munching on fast food to notice I was standing at the counter. Are you serious?! This place has the basic items you need for a bird, cat, and dog; maybe other animals. I came here often for my love bird food, toys, and for my dogs flea medicine. When I bought the love bird toys not only were they dusty but very expensive as well. I don't support pet stores that sell puppies but besides that I haven't had great experiences with this place. They sell the dog food I like (Taste of the Wild) but I feel so badly for the animals in there that it's heart-wrenching to go inside sometimes. I think if a pet store MUST sell puppies (and all other animals) they should be kept in better looking conditions. Came here for a pet guinea pig and they were just so adorable... This lady seems nice but she doesn't vendors know what she was saying, I asked if how old the guinea pig as, she wasn't sure and told me 3 to 4 week's, she said at first a boy then a girl so we were confused, guinea pigs usually run for 25 to 30 at the most but sold me the piggy for 40 something buck's plus tax.. Well we bought her and took her home and she was doing perfectly fine...not until the other night, she gave birth to 2 pups it was so unexpected!!!! I returned back to San Diego in the Imperial Beach area after being gone for 2 1/2 years. I went back to Pet Market and was SHOCKED!!!! This store has turned TERRIBLE/NASTY, and no one speaks english that well, and the customer service SUCKS!!!! No one had any general knowledge of products or where to find them. I was pretty much ignored. I asked for a girl that used to work there named kris or kristina and was told she was fired. TOO BAD.....She was the nicest person there, knew all about the products, and was always delightful, funny, and genuinely cared about the customer. The store never smelled bad, and she was great with my dogs. BIG MISTAKE getting rid of her. This store has gone to hell in a had basket, and smells like POOP and RAT PISS!!!!! Its a shame I have to even enter this establishment to purchase my food. If Petco or Petsmart carried it, I would DEFINITELY be there instead. read more
