My girlfriend and I took my Dogs for the first time to bathe them and I was having to coax my husky pit mix that it was ok to get him up on the bathing area. The attendant on duty was more interested in helping my girlfriend than me and I tried to get her attention which she almost responded but for some reason stopped. I immediately spoke up with "What is something wrong? Speak!!!" To my surprise she exploded with" Don't you dare speak to me that way!!!!" Giving me a stern glare. I responded " Oh come on seriously?" She did not respond and continued to glare at me. I of course felt extremely uncomfortable with the situation and just grabbed my stuff and walked out with my dog while my girlfriend continued to bathe our dogs brother. I was pretty upset but I went to our vehicle because I did not want to escalate the weird moment any further. I waited until my girlfriend walked out and we just left. I signed up using the QR code on the sign in front & I see all these people getting ahead of me. Just visited this store today to wash my Goldendoodle and the employees were very nice and helpful. In particular Jorge was very kind and helped me look for food alternatives for my dogs since his usual food wasn't available. He was knowledgeable and gave some great recommendations on different brands. I really appreciated all of his help today. Sometimes it's hard to find kind and genuine people nowadays so I wanted to acknowledge this store and Jorge. On a side note: the store itself is very clean and organized and the pet wash stations are the same . They supply the shampoo and clean towels and even some treats for your pet. I've been passing by for a couple of months and finally stopped in today. Gwen greeted me immediately and helped me with my pet needs. She was gracious and informative without being pushy. The store is impressively clean. Smells good. I plan on returning with my labs to use the $18 wash. It's $18 for 25 minutes and I can wash both dogs in that timeframe. I've been coming to this pet store since it first opened and have always had the best customer service from all who have worked here. And I'm always amazed at how everyone is is so knowledgeable about the various products and pet food that they sell. With Covid they are taking all the precautions, masks, distancing, sanitizing carts & baskets, etc. And the other day I went in and noticed that not only did they have plexiglass at the counter to separate the customer and employee using the cash register, there is also a piece of plexiglass between the 2 cash registers to separate 2 employees if they are both standing there servicing customers at the same time. Granted the space for the 2 registers is very close in proximity but I think they were wise to put a plexiglass partition so 2 employees aren't shoulder to shoulder so to speak. They have bathing services in the back so you can bathe your dog which I know works extremely well for people who own large dogs as my brother uses this service for his 97 lb Rottweiler that is a pain to wash at his house. I am not sure of the cost but I've heard it's reasonable and towels are provided. What's nice about Pet Food Express, besides the helpful & knowledgeable employees is they have a lot of products that is buy 3 get the 4th free. And if you buy something that your pet doesn't like they tell you to bring it back and they donate the open bag, etc., to the local animal shelter. Another nice service that they have is you can place your order online and choose to either have it delivered to you (based on if they deliver to your area, you put in your zip code & it will tell you if they deliver) or you can do a curbside service and they will bring it out to your car. I haven't tried either of these services yet as my dog likes to go inside so we just park, go in, browse and spend money. This is my go-to pet store, not just because it's literally around the corner from my house but because they have great products, service and the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. read more

We've always had excellent experiences at Pet Food Express stores across the San Francisco Bay Area. However, on this particular visit, the store manager of the Petaluma store left a sour experience and had us question our loyalty to Pet Food Express. We recently purchased 4 bags of frozen Stella and Chewy and our dog was having stomach issues with the first 2 bags. We decided to exchange the remaining 2 unopened bags for another flavor. The store manager promptly asked us for a receipt and said they "strictly enforce" a 30 day policy on returns. We were 4 days shy of the return window and her demeanor and attitude made us feel like we should be thankful she was going to make an exception for us. I asked her when this 30 day policy had changed since we almost never return things to Pet Food Express. She said "It changed in October, so it's been almost year". Her tone and demeanor made us feel guilty and as if we needed to be lectured on the stores policy. We spent an additional $70+ on food at this store with an extra serving of attitude. We had to thank her for being a customer. I don't remember it ever working this way. The 30 day policy is not written on the back of the receipts or written in the store. There is only a QR code that invites customers to view the policy on the stores website. I will not be giving the Petaluma store anymore of my hard earned money again. read more

Be been coming here on and off for a couple years. They helped me so much back when I had an animal that was super sensitive to foods. They were so patient with me and every person was awesome. I bought treats, food, beds and travel carriers here and everyone had good advice for me. Fast forward 2 years and I needed help with grooming supplies for a dog with sensitive skin and sensitive owners (my nose). Jorge spent extra time helping me and sharing his personal experience with his own dog of the same breed. I come all the way down 3 towns away for this place because they are worth it. I brought my puppy here at least twice now for his shots. The registration is simple to get him in line . The facility is very clean , the staff is super friendly and helpful. Each vet has been kind and just love my pup . My puppy left extremely happy after we left . I was surprised since he just got a shot, but he did get an awesome new toy for being so good . They have absolutely everything you would need for your fur baby :) and such a variety of food and toys . I've always been asked if I need any help and even get recommendations on what my pup may need for his health . I thought Petaluma is the city for animals but this store is not only NOT pet friendly but a rip off. We have been to many Pet Food Express stores to wash our dog Sacramento to San Francisco and they have always allow us some extra time because we have a hairy dog without charge but the place refused!!! This is the second time where I've come to bathe my puppy with my mom (due to personal physical challenges) because I needed her help. The Male Manager refused to let her help me and said "you can come back another time" despite my physical challenges. I couldn't come back another time as my puppy was in dire need of a bath. So, I had to put myself at risk of injuring myself even further by doing it myself while my mom watched from a distance. Keep in mind, there was only one other person in the bathing area. The entire time I was bathing him, the manager and all of the staff were standing together (not socially distancing) watching me like a hawk to make sure my mom didn't come help me. After shopping here for many years I unfortunately will be taking my business elsewhere. I had an awful experience with "Jorge" at the Petaluma location regarding a toy return. I had my receipt and was totally okay with store credit but he refused. I talked to multiple other locations and they were confused as to why he would not accept the return as it was only five days since purchase. He would not let me speak or reach out to a manager. I ended up driving to Novato Pet Food Express and they happily let me return it for store credit. I can not say it enough, if you are shopping for your furry friend do not come here. They have no idea what costumer service is about and unfortunately will be losing a lot of business if they proceed to treat their customers so poorly. This place needs to teach its employees the difference between being helpful and being intrusive. For years my wife and I have popped in to this location occasionally when we're in the area, and pretty much every time there's at least one employee who will start grilling us the minute we walk in. What are we looking for? What kind of pet do we have? Have we considered this brand? Have we heard about such-and-such? And on and on. We've even had employees follow us around while we try to shop. I'm sure there are a few people out there who appreciate that kind of attention, but many of us do not. It's fine to ask your customers if they need help, but please do it once and leave it at that. We don't need an annoying interrogation under the guise of helpful customer service. read more

It was a rainy night when my dog got skunked. I tried Petco but they no longer carry skunk shampoo because they want people to use their dog grooming service. Why would I put a newly skunked dog in my car or wait for a grooming appointment? I feed my dogs, The Honest Kitchen. I drive all the way down to Petaluma to get the buy 3, get 1 free deal. In fact, I believe all of the food and treats are buy 3 get 1 free. Pet Food Express provides top quality products. And they carries great products you will not find in Petsmart or Petco. Pet Food Express also puts on the annual Bay Area Pet Fair that happens in Marin. Last year they adopted out over 700 pets from the 2 day event. Pet Food Express also has very nice tiled doggie wash. My husband and I came in here hoping to get a 20 lb. bag of Nutro cat food, which is what we've been buying for years. After checking out the Pet Food Express in Berkeley, we found said bag to be a dollar or two cheaper than Petco or Petsmart. We walked in and the lady working immediately asked us if we needed help. No, we told her, we're fine. She followed us as we walked to the cat food. When we were looking at the bag, she asked us again if she could help us. Again we assured her we were fine. She then watched us as we picked up the bag. "They're discontinuing that brand. It's the last shipment before they quit making it," she told us. This was news to us, but I figured that since she worked in a pet store, she should know. Then we caught a look at the price and it was about $4 more than the bag we could buy kitty corner at Petco. So we put it back. She continued to ask us questions as we perused the store. It got so annoying that we left. We went across the street and bought our cat food at Petco. That was four months ago, and the "discontinued" cat food is still plentiful at that store. Ohh, that's because it was never discontinued. read more

If you want someone who isn't afraid to look something up with you just to make sure, or good recommendations with a solid reasoning behind it, this is your store. I was in need of something that helps anxiety and upset tummies, as my dog hasn't traveled well. This one lady was so helpful in helping me get something and genuinely listened to my concerns. I made this review because watching my dog transform was incredible. It has been about a week now and CBD has helped far more than I thought, along with their probiotics fixing my dogs tummy. Pre-COVID, this place was filled with extraordinary employees. Everyone was helpful, friendly, and accommodating. We have a Keeshond who has Crohn's disease and it causes severe skin issues. Because of this, we have to bathe him weekly, which doesn't sound like much, but his hair is 10" long so it can take from 2-3 hours to complete. We washed him at Pet Food Express (PFE) every week for over 5 years. The pre-COVID team saw us paying for extra wash sessions and told us that the PFE Corporate policy was "one token, one wash" no matter how long it took. Our dog trainer also knew of this policy. All we had to do was tell them when the wash automatically turned off and they would turn it back on free of charge. The team would also let us use a second blower free of charge if no one else was using a wash station next to ours. As you can imagine, this was very helpful, and we would spend at least $100 weekly after finishing up each bath. We would also give the team holiday gifts each year and we gifted one employee with furniture and rugs for her new place since we considered the employees there like family. We kept our dog home during COVID because he is immunocompromised and we weren't sure if he could catch it, but we started going back to PFE a few weeks ago. Fast forward to Monday, 11/21/2022 at 5 PM. There were new people working so I introduced myself and our dog and explained what the old team would do for us and why. The new person I spoke with was an older female staff member with a blonde bob and she looked at me like I was crazy. My husband and I both sensed tension the entire time we were there - like we were not welcome. The older blonde female staff member asked everyone in the wash area if they were ok and if they needed anything - except us. And, yes, we noticed. I called today 11/23/2022 at 2 PM to ask if what we'd experienced in the pre-COVID days was something special and we didn't know it or if we just experienced an especially rude team on 11/21. Turned out that the person who looked at me like I was crazy and who was rude to us on 11/21 is the "new" (to us) manager named Gwen - and she was the person I spoke to on the phone today. She said that we were given special treatment all those years. Then she started going on about how costs were going up and their wash area was very busy and that the "timers are there for a reason," but that she could "talk to [her] district manager about MAYBE doing something special for us going forward." We were never after some sort of special treatment - it was offered to us after the old team saw us re-paying for washes. I also wasn't calling to ask for special treatment, I just wanted to understand why we were being treated so differently and what we should expect in the future. Now I understand what to expect in the future. I am also a Sonoma County employer and if one of my employees treated a customer the way I was treated, it would be their last day representing my company. We've spent nearly $20K at that store and as I told Gwen today, we will shop elsewhere. read more

Pet Food Express always has amazing customer service at all locations. We usually prep our dog's food but today we unfortunately had a pipe burst at our house, meaning everything was shut off so we couldn't prep his food. I saw online that the Pet Food Express in Petaluma was open until 8 so we hurried over from Marin. I called just to make sure and Rachel answered so kindly, making me aware they actually closed at 7. I asked if she knew of any place open that sells Just Food For Dogs and she told me to not worry. That she would have it ready by the time we got there even though it was after 7. She was incredibly genuine and kind, listening to me as I panicked. Rachel brought the food out to my car and I cannot thank her for her generosity enough. Hands down the best pet food store out there. We've been getting our dog food from here since we moved to Petaluma three years ago. The staff has always been friendly and the food and extras we buy are reasonably priced. I gave birth in December and my in laws were staying at our house. My husband forgot to buy more food for the dogs and my in laws called him (we were over at Marin general hospital) when they realized we had no more dog food. It was 7:55 pm and my father in law offered to pick it up but we also knew it would take about 15-20 minutes to get from our house over to the store. My husband called pet food express and spoke with the manager. He said he'd keep the store open until my father in law got there. What I didn't realize at the time was that he stayed out while the cash registers clothes and gave my father in law the bag of dog food. This was to help us out and it was on the honor system that my husband would come back and pay for the dog food. I know this is a chain-y kind of a store, but every time I've been in, the staff have been very helpful with finding things for my 3 spoiled cats. Okay so I'm a step cat mommy, but I take my responsibilities seriously. I've gotten great advice on numerous problems and they have a product guarantee so if your super picky pet does not respond well or like what you have purchased for them, you can bring it back for a full refund with the receipt and packaging. I've also found lots of fun toys for the cats to rip apart as well as a good variety of snacks. Almost everything in the store is buy 3 get the 4th free, so you can grab 4 toys, or 4 bags of Greenies, or 4 sacks of food, etc. and get a decent discount. You can tell that the staff really cares about animals and they love to talk to you and exchange pet stories. If you're rushing in and out, they are pretty good at letting you be if you tell them that you don't need help. I'd go on a little more, but I have 3 cats hovering about demanding snacks. Amazing store! Prior to shopping here, I had always gone to a big national chain like Petsmart or PetCo. Tired of horrible customer service, small selection on natural and holistic food, and seeing animals in cages being ignored, I decided to check out Pet Food Express. I didn't bring Bear, my 5 month old Lab/Boxer on my first visit. When I entered the store I was immediately greeted, and asked if I needed any help. I declined, and began to browse the store. The layout is great. Neat, and well organized, complete with a doggy deli, rows of holistic food, and an awesome self service dog wash station. I was impressed! Later I was again approached and asked if I needed any help. The staff also was interested in what pets I had and invited them to come next time. As I continued to shop I noticed the staff interacting with everyone, handing out healthy treats to the visiting dogs. They did not happen to carry the Large Breed version of the food I wanted, so they happily ordered it for me. My second visit, my husband and I brought Bear in for a bath. We were a bit hesitant. He's 5 months old, 55 pounds and has LOTS of energy. The staff reassured us, and we proceeded to the dog wash. For $15, you get everything you need. Shampoo, conditioner, towels, aprons, blow dryer, and tie downs. It is so much easier than doing it at home! They have a variety of scents and types of soap to use. Best of all no clean up! They clean the tub, towels, and dry everything once you're done. I recommend buying 3 washes and getting the 4th free. Once done, the staff lavished praise on Bear and gave him some treats. The pricing is fair and reasonable. A little known fact is they will price match on food from local pet stores. I'm not sure if they honor online pricing. Everything in the store is buy 3 get the 4th free, including the dog wash. They often have 20% off coupons in the coupon mailers or newspaper so keep an eye out for them too. The staff is friendly, bright, and knowledgeable. They are happy to offer advice if asked. If they can't answer the question, they will find someone who can. The store often holds adoption events, and has a local dog training company "Unleashed" hold drop in clinics once a month. Bottom line, if you love your pet, shop here. read more

I would give it 5 stars but they are pretty expensive. I take my dog here to give her a bath. It is $15 for a self service bath. The bath includes 2 towels, warm water and three different kinds of soaps, one for flees, one oatmeal for itchy skin, and one that's some kind of orange peel, and then a blow dryer to dry them. Their bath tubs are up high enough that you don't have to bend over and the hose is for water and soap, so easy!! They have tie downs in the bath so your dog wont jump out when washing them. It is so easy and pain free! They even provide aprons so you wont get your clothes wet. After I wash my dog we walk through the store to the toy section and she gets an inexpensive toy. The staff is very nice and loves animals. I go there at least once a month. Love it! read more

Each time I go here, I feel better and better about this store. The last time, the guys were so laidback, they said "hi" and left me alone. *Ah, I could think clearly and breathe deeply.* The pleasant cashier was even playing "The Postal Service" faintly in the background, and kindly told me about a Pet Fair at the Marin Civic Center. My first few times here, I dreaded it. TMI all over the place. "Hi, how are you? What brings you into the store today? Do you know about this and that? Well this is good because of blah, blah blah. These types of things are bad because of blah, blah, blah. This product is better than blah, blah, blah." In the end, all I heard was "blah" and my heart beat, pulsating through my veins. I then resorted to buying cat food online after that, as the San Rafael Store left me with similar feelings, around that same time period. But jump forward 3 years, and this store is A-ok. I believe that it's fine to acknowledge customers, but read their body language. As an employee, make yourself friendly and approachable without getting into people's space and heads. I love the selection of raw food available and sometimes when their fridge is out they usually have more in the back. Love love love their more holistic food options!! More options for holistic foods at lower prices than the chain across the street. I do have to go to the store across the street because of a picky cat, who will only eat a certain low quality food. The customer service here is far above that across the street. The clerks are knowledgeable about various types of foods, local trainers and their toy selection. They are willing to speak to a customer and help figure out what your pet needs. Before I went to Pet Food Express I had little to no expectations of a pet store, kind of like going to a grocery store. Be clean, be neat, and be reasonably priced. This place was all those things, but the staff is above and beyond. We recently adopted a retired greyhound from a local rescue and the knowledge the staff has is amazing. They are also incredibly patient and kind. Our little Grey is afraid of hard shiny floors and they are always willing to help him get a bit further in conquering his fears. In short this place rocks! The dog washing service is useful, although pricey at $15. There's a discount when you buy three. They're nice here, and usually give my dog a treat for free, and there are tons of treats and supplies to choose from. It's usually quite clean except for the washing bays, which are sometimes not rinsed out after every dog. I don't expect them to rush over and sterilize everything after each washing, but on occasion they're a bit gross. There's a good selection, but certain employees can be a little pushy about what food and such they think is best for your pet. As others have noted, most of the employees are super friendly and helpful, while one or two give the hard sell on pricier food. Not a big deal, I suppose. Great alternative to Petco, not as cheap as Pet Club (but the latter is a goodly drive away). In fact, PFE is on the pricey side. Recently got some worming meds here that were priced about twice as much as retail online. That's a big difference, and I for one can't afford to shell out $29.99 plus tax when I can get the same exact product for half that. read more

They have been excellent in doing all the things to make themselves, their counters, as well as their customers very safe. Each time I've been in (twice since the virus), they streamline their process both in time and safety.
