My Dog Star has some skin and allergy issue so I wanted to visit this pet store to see if they had some items I could purchase instead of getting them off Amazon. I have heard good things about this Ultra oil so I was happy they had it in stock! The store is filled with lots of boutique collar, toys, bedding, special made dog treats, and lots of natural pet food. I was a bit overwhelmed with the selection of pet food, toppers, frozen items that I wish I did more research before visiting. The staff seemed friendly and the store was very clean. This is my go-to store for good, quality, American made dog food. They carry really great chow for my Newfie mix and Tummy-sensitive German Shepard. Specifically, all forms of FROMM, in various flavors. They have refrigerated raw foods, and rawhide snacks. They also carry raw, freeze dried brands like Stella & Chewy's in several different sizes and flavors to meet everyone's budget. The sales people are knowledgeable, and will give suggestions based on what your specific dogs' needs may be. It's a small to medium store, very clean and well kept. They always offer to help load up my car after I pay. The store also carries doggie clothes, hygiene products, leashes, toys, carriers, and vitamins. I love it! read more

I went looking for a nice, unique collar for my sweet Leonberger, Lucy. I took her to some of the popular commercial stores, but the leashes were so "corporate-looking." So I took her here to Pet Barn just to check out what they had. Now THIS place had some collars! I saw several I liked and Lucy seemed excited by them as well. She sat right up and stared as I pulled out a few and let her take a sniff (see photos). Meanwhile, as we were deciding, a nice employee came over and pet her, asking: "This is a Leonberger, right?" Impressive. Most people don't know my dog's breed. We were certainly in the right place. There was also a couch nearby and Lucy was invited to sit up on it! They brought her over a couple of treats and she enjoyed them very much. Yes. We have arrived, I thought to myself. This is how shopping with your dog is supposed to be. Lucy was in her element and looked right at home. I was just beaming as they gave her the VIP treatment. Nothing makes me happier than when people are super nice to my dog. But I digress... So we found a really nice collar, one befitting my beloved Leo. It's nice and thick with strong leather on the inside, but a beautiful subdued flowery fabric design on the outside. It's also very unique. It fits her like a glove and has plenty of expansion room. Lucy pranced around the house a little more than usual when we arrived home. Showing off her neck wear, no doubt. You should definitely check out Pet Barn Annapolis. They have a ton of unique gourmet treats for your dog, too. And toys, all kinds of natural food, cool-looking dishes, etc. It's all high end and so not "corporate," like those other places. So it may not be cheap, but it's worth it. Think about it. When my dog developed severe allergies and suffered from re-occurring yeast infections, I turned to Pet Barn on the recommendation of a friend. They truly stand up to their reputation as nutrition experts. I'll be the first to admit I'm a hypochondriac, especially when it comes to my fur baby. The staff were more than happy to deal with my neurotic questions and even gave me information to take home so that I could continue to educate myself on their products on my own. I'm happy to report that Barkley couldn't be doing better on his new raw food! His ears and eyes have cleared almost completely and he is no longer bothering his paws. The shampoo they recommended also seems to have gotten rid of his "doggy smell". I could not be happier, and I will continue to recommend them to my friends. read more

It is spacious enough and they are very welcoming of my gihugic great danes whenever I've come in to shop. (Please see added notes edited in for information since provided by the business) I wanted to find a local source for the raw and dehydrated raw foods our cats need (I'd rather not pay shipping, and I'd like even more to support a local store). However, after two visits, I don't plan to shop here again. The first time, we were able to find a handful of sample-sizes to try (important because we never know what our cats will react to). One of the ladies told us that the contents of the dog version of a certain brand of frozen raw was fine for cats and that all they did was change the label on the cat versions (which they were low on). Well, that certainly didn't turn out to be true: the dog versions don't contain the all-important taurine cats need (NOTE: the store called to tell me there are acceptable amounts of taurine in the raw flesh, and they only add more to match the requirements for labeling for cat foods), and they contain bone fragments large enough to be a choking hazard for cats. (If my cat hadn't coughed out that piece of bone, this would be a far more irate review right now.) I noted at the time that one brand of sample size items had expired coupons on them but didn't think much of it at the time. (NOTE: the store has said that the coupons were simply mis-printed by the manufacturer.) On the second visit, one of the things I picked up was a large box of Addiction dehydrated raw cat food; I knew from the samples that the cats love it and it rehydrates easily. However, this box's contents were rock-hard and almost impossible to rehydrate. There's no expiration date in the "enjoy by" box or anywhere else, so I contacted Addiction Foods. They were surprised to find there wasn't an expiration date listed, shocked to hear that the food was so hard, and immediately offered to send me a replacement box for free. (NOTE: The store tells me they're sending what they have back to the company, and that there's an issue with the expiration date stickers falling off, and possibly an issue with the batch being off in consistency or the warehouse storing it improperly.) One way in which local stores struggling to avoid losing sales to online giants can get ahead is to have great customer service or knowledge on their side. Unfortunately, I no longer trust anything the folks at Pet Barn are likely to tell me, down to the freshness of the products on their shelves. (NOTE: while it's a little unnerving to have the store call me out of the blue to address an online review, at least they were able to give me additional information which I've noted in several places above. Hopefully it'll help you make a more educated decision of your own.) I will give Pet Barn this: they did handle the return of the cat food very well. Edited once more to add: I've since purchased the cat food from another source (same brand, same size, same variety) and it was not at all hard and stale, so that definitely isn't what it's supposed to be like. Also, while I was happy to talk to the cat food company, as a matter of principle I don't appreciate a business handing out my personal phone number without my permission. Lesson learned: when they ask you for your phone number for their customer records, just say no. read more

I visit Pet Barn Annapolis for one product. The polietness of the staff can be hit or miss but not to the point I am detered from visiting. I love the concept of the store but I wish the prices were more reasonable. I respect that they are not a chain and can't get the same bulk discount as other retailers but I do think there are some items that they are definitely getting a higher profit margin on. All in all I would recommend this store should you be in the market for all natural products for your pet, however I would recommend shopping around a little and making sure you're not over paying for something you can get elsewhere for cheaper. read more

High end products and high end prices but lousy service with a "know it all attitude". The snotty girl in this store was a complete know it all who was extremely rude. Even when presented with proof that what she was saying was incorrect she wouldn't back down. Then she offered to order the special food we needed and said it woudl definitely be in on Wednesday - on Wednesday she calls to say it didn't come in but she knew where we could get it - then wouldn't tell us where. She pushed us out to Friday - still no food. She never called back and now dropped this onto a coworker. Our dog has allergies and needs one specific food and we would have ordered it on line had she not made promises. The promises on the food were the only reason we put up with her nastiness. We will NEVER return and there are PLENTY of other places to go in the area so avoid this overpriced place with poor customer service and a rude staff! read more

I went to return an item that we did not use and decided we didn't need. When I produce my receipt, both reps (young ladies) behind the counter told me that they don't take back items that are made of a material. That it's too difficult to sanitize because it has bacteria in it. It was UNUSED! Brand new, still had the tag on it, only purchased a couple weeks ago. I would understand not taking back an item that looked used or chewed up by my pet. Hello! Last time I took biology we found out that everything has bacteria in it. So the items they are selling have bacteria in them! How does that ring with their policy? I asked if they would even consider a store credit. With her snooty attitude she said 'no, sorry'. I said, 'so, I am pretty much stuck with this'. She said, 'Yep!', almost with a condensending attitude. She didn't offer any other options or help. They lost a customer today. I won't spend my money here again. My dog was getting diarrhea from a new food they recommended to me. When I called the first time the employee said they don't return raw dog food because they can't resell it. The next day the owner calls me and I explained to her what happened and she told me to bring it back in we will see what we can do and she doesn't know if it is the food or not making my dog sick. What she didn't know is that I know the rep for the dog food I was having an issue with and ALL of there dog food is guaranteed. If there are any problems they accept all returns. This place only cares about $$$ and not if your dog is healthy. I understand you are running a business but if you sell food you have know the risk and prove good customer service. Right across the street from them opened a Bark. I use to go to them in silver spring and they are usually very helpful. When I am in annapolis area that will be my place of choice. read more

I agree with Kathy G's post. I don't understand the poor reviews of this place. I went in there for the first time this evening and was blown away with the customer service. We are in the process of preparing to bring a puppy home for the first time and both girls working when I went in blew me away with all their knowledge. I had an absolutely lovely experience at Pet Barn today! My Westie and I live in Mexico. When I come to the US, I like to stock up on biodegradable pick-up bags. When I'm visiting Southern California, finding them is no problem. Pet People stock them and I buy several boxes. Here in Maryland, they are more difficult to find. One of the big chain stores had a single box last week, promised re-stock on Sunday, and then told me on Tuesday they would not be carrying them anymore. I went to Pet Barn because it was close. I was greeted warmly, the sales associate quickly identified the product I needed, helped me to find the "best buy" for my needs, and even asked friendly questions about where I live. It was such a positive experience! I love it that such friendly businesses still exist amidst all the big boxes and impersonal mega marts. read more

This is the best price ANYWHERE for the 5 star canned food my dogs eat! On the down side when they recommended raw goat's milk I was told if it starts to get old freeze it. Since food safety is in my line of work I was aghast. While I realize that ecoli doesn't affect dogs like it does humans I still don't want to take chances with my dogs' health. The Annapolis Pet Barn is an unfortunate mix of a good selection of products but with high prices, inflexible and poor customer service attitudes and policies. I have spent a lot of $$ buying high end dog food and products since they opened but twice have been surprised at the register when my dog food bags have rung up at several $ over the posted price on the product shelf tag. The first time I questioned the error and was told that I would pay the price the computer rang up - period! No, apology for mispricing or incorrect system data or even an offer to honor their posted pricing. They ripped the tag off the shelf and said - "you pay the price the computer says". I questioned their policy and attitude and was met with a stiff, arrogant attitude, as if I were wrong! After bringing this to the owners attention later, I was given a credit for the amount. Again no apology. Just an attitude. The same thing happen again recently and I went through the same request for them to honor the posted price and was given the same answer, as if they are programed like their computers. I didn't buy this bag but informed the clerk that they just lost a customer for good due to the ridiculous attitudes and unfriendly customer service, over their own mistaken pricing or forgetting to mark up the system a couple bucks. The customer may not always be right but at least they deserve to be treated with respectful attitudes and customer service oriented policies when something small goes wrong. The other specialty pet store in Annapolis has a great staff that are actually eager to please and help. their prices are actually much better as well. What a combination.
