Kazeem was not only dapper, but definitely warm and welcoming as well as awesome to chat about mid-century design -- and that is always a mark of a good person. ;-) See you again soon!

The handmade jewelry is my guilty pleasure here, but they have everything from Frye boots to Spanx. The staff has always been helpful and kind. They often have GREAT sales which is super, considering their prices are very much retail value. I once broke the chain on my necklace that I had purchased here and they replaced it for me. My items from here always get a lot of compliments and are some of my favorite pieces! I do miss their David Aubrey collection and really wish they would bring more of it back, their jewelry options have somewhat dwindled since I first started going in here, but I never leave empty handed so... what does that tell you. When I struggled to find some that fit "just right", she brought a few pairs and even suggested that I try a smaller size--I guffawed (really? that's flattering she'd think I'd fit into THOSE, but hahah, yeah right!)--well, they ended up being PERFECT, and I walked out with those jeans in my hand. This is a funky little shop. Most of the shops in the Old Port now are pricey but Expressly Trends…read morehas brand name jeans and clothing for really affordable prices. It can be hit of miss so sometimes you go in and find nothing and other times you go in and love everything. It all depends on what they are able to get in stock so you have to give it a couple of chances before you write it off. They have AJ jeans which are my favorite and they are usually around $300 but sometimes you can get them for as little as $40 which is amazing. I have also found Frye boots there for $50 or so. The women who work in there are super friendly and super helpful as well so it always pleasant to go in there. Whenever I am shopping in the Old Port I try to stop in there first to see what I can find before I go spend a fortune at the other high end boutiques downtown. If you are local check back regularly because you never know what steals you might find. :)

The place focuses on high end fashion, presented on racks and shelves in a fairly efficient way. I don't like when boutiques go nuts draping their sweaters and pants over pieces of art, or suspending it from the ceiling. It's clothing. It'll speak for itself. Anyway, Zane avoids that troublesome trend and shows off the goods in typically Portland straight-forwardness. Definitely worth a quick stop in if you need a top, jewelry, or want to be a polite boyfriend and stand there holding a purse.

For the items I purchased I didn't feel I was overpaying, prices were what I expect from a local business. I loved the environment and display in the store. I really enjoyed taking my time looking at each and every item. Icing on the cake, there was the sweetest mellow little pittie named Lou, who sauntered out from behind the counter for a quick hello and pets. Their perfectly fitted flannels have passed the test of time, combined with curated items from high-end brands (A.P.C., Barbour, Swans Island, Wings + Horn, etc.). They put together looks that don't go out of style, with durable clothes that have been in my closet (and on me) for up to six seasons (so far!). If you're anywhere in the area, Portland Dry Goods is worth going out of your way for. My only complaint: the buttons on their flannels sometimes jump ship, but they've reinforced a couple and I've had no issues since.

My mom was in town, saw that we had an Anthropologie, and made us stop what we were doing to go…read morethere. She had watched "Man Shops Globe" with the Keith Johnson (Anthropologie's buyer-at-large), which featured him traveling the world to find local artisans who made unique wares that could be sold in Anthropologie stores, and wanted to see what it was all about. As an artist herself, she felt a connection to the potters in particular. I whined. I moaned. I groaned. I rolled my eyes. I dragged my heels. "I am not an Anthropologie Girl" I stated. "What does that even mean?," my mom asked me. The truth is that I don't actually know what it means, but I knew girls - girls who were FAR more fashionable, FAR prettier, FAR classier, (who appeared) FAR more cultured (despite the fact that I've lived abroad multiple times), FAR more mature, FAR more "with it" - who shopped there. And I knew I wasn't one of them. At least I didn't think I was. But Anthropologie is chic and bohemian and indie and artsy and creative and soulful... and, y'know what, I'm into those things in my own way so I should be an Anthropologie Girl! I guess what I didn't realize is that Anthropologie is a lot more than just clothing (and I think THAT'S where my mental hiccup was with this place). Actually, the clothing - while beautiful and stylish and totally covetable - was too far out of my price range to even try on. There was one shirt that was totally "me", but not at a three digit price tag. What I like my Anthropologie is everything else: the jewelry (which is still too expensive) and other accessories, the candles, the perfumes, and mostly the home decor items. If I could refurnish my whole home in just Anthropologie wares, I would. As it is, I think I can start incorporating new pieces and fun items here and there (like whale shaped measuring spoons, for example) as they prices on the home decor stuff were actually insanely reasonably priced. My first visit I bought a teal and gold glass blown votive candle (for $8) that I've been drinking red wine out of it. Probably not what it was meant for, but it's like a statement piece and... red wine looks pretty in it. I should have bought three more. My current want list includes: the sea salt perfume (because it'll help me get one step closer to being a mermaid), a headband (I'm not sure I can pull off, but I might try), and some minimalist earrings that make me smile (like crawling vines). Is the staff perfect? No. But my interaction with them each time I go is so limited that I'm unfazed. The store is spacious, clean, smells good, and is all around inviting and warm. The location is fabulous, and what they sell is fun to just look at, touch, and smell even if you can't afford it. So, yeah, I'm an "Anthro" (as the cool kids say) convert.
