Many other reviews have nailed the overall vibe and feel of this store very well. A vast array of items you will find once you step in. Etsy/garage sale, and any other way you'd like to describe is appropriate. Some will make you want to buy it instantly while some others may make you question who in the world would buy it besides as a gag gift. For example, some stickers of not safe for work body parts that are not close to being anatomically correct or doing lewd acts, that will give you some laughs while looking at them. Even if you are just looking to browse and not buy I believe this is a store worth checking out! The worker was friendly enough and tried greeting those who entered. Prices are hard to judge as I think some of the items are unlikely to be found many other spots so the value is up to the buyer. WHAT A CUTE STORE!! Nostalgia wrapped in modern entities that are bursting with color! That is my best summary of Pinecone + Chickadee. I was heading to HiFi donut (right across the street) and this store jumped out at me. I love interesting stores. I walked inside and was overwhelmed at how many things there were to look at! Prices range from affordable to a little overpriced- I do appreciate the range. There were things from my childhood, cool stickers (free and a fee), buttons, games, journals, so much everywhere! I really enjoyed poking through this store. This is not a Portland tourist trap, this is an actual store selling regular substance for peoples homes or just to make someone smile. I can share, I had a 9 year old boy with me and he loved so many items! read more

Ha! It was great reading Steff's review from 4 years ago. She nailed it. Pinecone + Chickadee seems to still have that charm; that Etsy-comes-to-life type of charm. It also looks like their prices are still as steep in 2021 as they were back then, which isn't too surprising. This store is cute. It's one of those stores where you go in and 9/10 things you look at, you want to buy. Even though you don't need them. Or you think of someone that would love that cute journal they have, with that nice indie cover that makes you feel ~hip~. P+C is paradise for anyone that's artsy/crafty, and for those of us that get a kick out of beautiful stores. It's great on the eyes, but not so much on the wallet. Most of the items here are overpriced, but I'm glad they exist in case I ever need them. $5 for a birthday or thank you card is not something I'd do often, but for the right person and occasion, I might just splurge. And, honestly, it's good to know that I can visit P+C to buy a non-generic card that's not made by Hallmark. Still, I can't justify their prices when it comes to buying things for myself, as cute as their selection is. The staff here, however, doesn't leave you with that same wholesome feeling as the rest of the store. Half the time they look bored and very disinterested in the customer. Other times they force you to sanitize your hands even though you're wearing gloves, and promise to not touch anything, and you had just sanitized your hands prior to leaving the car. PS: They have cute pins for $1. They're tiny, but they can make for a cute gift. Probably the one item I'll continue to buy from them as a gift for others. Alright, so one of those things that you are supposed to do as a loving husband/significant other was to go browse around curio stores while on vacation, and as a rule when it comes to the touristy part of Portland, Maine, they will always stock the same thing A) local pottery (even the ones clearly labeled "made in China" B) Soaps C) Local interest things like the "wicked good" bumper stickers D) Blueberries or fir scented crap E) Syrups (as if I never seen them in Quebec before) Invariably, the curio part of the store goes down and it all degenerates into boring old dollar store touristy consumerism, and the entire experience turns into a forced march of inanity. That is, until we happen upon Pinecone + Chickadee. Well, it's not that I can't find anything to buy here, it's more like trying to figure out what I really want, and what I can live without. The classic video games are always nice, the thotchkes of a bygone age is welcome. My lady actually found an old NKOTB LP record that she knows her friend will definitely want, and I was salivating over the Star Wars stuff. So many cool things to buy here. Pinecone + Chickadee is my go to for candles and unique gifts for friends. My friend loves Prince. It's more an obsession, I guess. I've found Prince candles, a mug and a greeting card. And she's always a happy camper! I've also picked up some great records, fun pot holders and some really cool books! Stumbled across this place while visiting Portland, and so pleased that I did. It felt like finding a great thrift store with tons of things you want to buy. The items are not vintage but all feel curated and local. Another review mentioned Etsy and it is like a live action Etsy store with multiple artists. Overall slightly pricey on some items but honestly this just helped keep me from buying 15 items. For the items I purchased I didn't feel I was overpaying, prices were what I expect from a local business. I loved the environment and display in the store. I really enjoyed taking my time looking at each and every item. Icing on the cake, there was the sweetest mellow little pittie named Lou, who sauntered out from behind the counter for a quick hello and pets. We moved on to shopping and he casually walked back to his cozy bed tucked behind the counter. Overall this was easily my favorite store I visited in Portland! read more

Pinecone + Chickadee is like a garage sale made sweet, sweet love to Etsy. Looking for old school video games? Or Pyrex ware? Or vinyls you didn't know you needed? They've got it. Looking for unique t-shirt designs (like a space cat)? Or jewelry made from wood burning? Or locally made lotions, chapsticks, and beard oil? They've got it. Seriously, it's an amalgamation of all the best parts about your neighbor's yard sale and all the things you wish you could touch, hold, feel, and try-on before buying on Etsy. For all my indie, crafty, vintage loving friends THIS is the place I want to shop for them for their birthdays, holidays, or just because. But I can't, because I'm not rich. See, the problem is that everything is so much more expensive than you think it's going to be. A single greeting card, for example, will run you $5. I've splurged from time to time, especially when I've found that perfect item, but I can't buy as much as I'd like to unfortunately - so P&C ends up being a really fun place to browse more than anything (which is still great and totally inspirational for those of us who are artsy). My only other hesitation with this place is the staff - they seem far more interested in hanging out with each other and their friends (I always feel like I'm disrupting a "hang sesh" - do kids still call it that? I'd like to love this store, especially because they carry vintage typewriters for reasonable prices. However typewriters are so very hip so OF COURSE they carry typewriters. HIP. Yes, Hip. This store is for HIPSTERS. If you have never seen a hipster in his or her natural state, this is where to do your anthropological field work. Hipster is behind counter. Wearing ironic clothing, never making eye contact or talking to you. Talking to friend about how they don't like that band anymore because everyone else does. Pinecone + Chickadee was the very first store we stumbled upon after arriving in Portland and it immediately caught my attention, so of course we had to go in. What a cute little store! I loved the vintage, mod, retro feel of the surroundings and items for sale. I saw some clothing, housewares, appliances, jewelry, books, candles, pins, etc. Everything seemed to be reasonably priced and from what I could tell, several of the items were handmade by local artists. I would definitely recommend stopping by Pinecone + Chickadee if you either live in the area or are visiting the area to check out some one of a kind items and support the local scene! read more

Some vintage, some modern, and all curated with love and care, there's not much not to love about Pinecone + Chickadee. Every time I walk into this store I find at least a few things that I want to buy. Because of my superhuman self-control, I usually only buy one or two. I enjoy the way the goods are organized, which is pretty loosely. It makes for a sort of treasure hunting browsing experience, but without a feeling of clutter or chaos. The owners are a husband and wife who are both cordial and good for a short conversation, if that's your bag (it's mine). Stop in and say hi. I'll bet you find a few things you'll want. read more

I love this place! I've loved this place for years. I most recently found a CareBear glass that I had years ago. That being said what was the smell in here this past Friday night? It was awful-it was a cross between wet basement & an illegal substance. So while I love this place---I love the squirrel drummer shirts, the cool flower earrings, etc if it smells like that again I'll have to walk on by. read more

This is a fun store and we had a good time walking around and laughing at all of the old things we had forgotten about. Star Wars lunch boxes, Burt Reynolds greeting cards, and 8-track tapes! Dionne Warwicke, Barry Manilow, John Cougar (Mellencamp), they're all here. My only complaint is that for its size, there isn't enough of the stuff. read more

Don't let the name throw you off, this is an amazing store for all sorts of trinkets and gifts. From books and jewelry, to Maine souvenirs they have it all. Maine shirts are super cute and soft. Only downfall is they are a little tab expensive, so just be aware you may be dropping some money when you go in here (although it is definitely worth it) read more

Some cool stuff but a lot of it can be found for a quarter of the price at GoodWill, flea markets and garage sales. Some stuff is laughably overpriced for what it is but there are some fairly rare stuff there that is worth the cost. Everytime I go there I see the same stuff, i wonder if they actually ever sell anything. If you are into retro and don't mind shelling out some dough, this place is for you. If you have patience and love the thrill of the hunt, go garage-saleling. read more

LOVE this store. so many cool tidbits, clothes, and vintage items- its like the best yard sale you've ever been to, but on crack and with handmade items and back up stock. great place, all around. i can see cranky people complaining about the "hip" vibe (kids these days! with their Wes Anderson movies and their irony!), but honestly, if there is stuff there that you want and the staff is nice, who cares what label the cranksters put on it? Seriously the coolest store concept. I found A Christmas Carol reel for my old viewmaster there. Plus some adorable brass anchor candle stick holders as our Maine souvenir.
