Hats shoes and…read moresocks Jansons Clothing is a whole lot different than the usual touristy type of stores found in the center of Boothbay Harbor. It does carry some t-shirts and trinket type items but most of the inventory is centered around higher quality and practical clothing. The company has been around since 1902 and is perhaps most famous for it's wide selection of warm and quality sweaters. Definitely something people need to survive the winters up here. There are also heaps of shoes and boots, scarves, warm socks, hats, swimwear, sun glasses, watches and of course high quality long underwear. I even saw some life jackets in the store. Definitely a wide variety of different and very useful items. The prices here vary but tend to reflect the higher quality of the merchandise. Jansons isn't a good place to find trinkets and souvenirs but it is a great store to find quality clothing to keep your butt warm during the cold Maine winters.

Perfect for early-20-somethings to mid-40-somethings with an eye for fashion but with the other eye on their checking account. I've found Agolde jean shorts, a $300 winter jacket for only $110 (which has become a staple in my Maine winter wardrobe!) and countless cute sweaters and tops at a fraction of their retail price. They have a great selection of dresses apt for wedding guests, and a solid amount of high quality footwear as well. The way the store is organized is yet another plus. They organize by clothing type and color, which makes for a seamless shopping experience and caters to my selectivity. As someone who is embarrassingly picky about what ends up in my wardrobe's rotation, and is also committed to ethical consumerism, but whose wallet can't always accommodate my tastes, the Haberdashery is a godsend. I'm always surprised at what I end up finding (and walking away with) whenever I head in. As a seller, I appreciate their model--get more bang for your buck with store credit, or opt for cash-only. What a gem!!

However I do not think I'll be shopping here much longer. I had stopped by to grab a gift the other day and was helped by an older woman I did not recognize. Like I mentioned previously, the staff here is always very friendly and helpful. This woman was not. A minute into asking for her assistance I was disappointed to discover she was down right bossy and pushy, I could tell she was only focused on making the sale and not actually helping me. And when I tried to wave off the help and shop for myself, she lingered and closely watched me shop while chatting my ear off about her children. I'm a mother, god knows I talk about my kids any chance I get-but this just felt excessive and almost manipulative. Eventually the other younger lady happened to pop into the back room and was swift in saving me from the uncomfortable situation. She was very helpful and actually listened to me. On my way out I had also asked her about the lady I had encountered previously and learned that she apparently is the new manager. Needless to say, if that is how this store is going to be run from now on I feel bad for both the staff and customers. I don't think I will be shopping here for much longer. Such a shame since everything is so lovely.
