Original Review: Can't speak to their quality of work but can say that they were a non show for 2 days in a row when trying to get a quote. First appointment I got a message that they were going to be way late and requested to push back until 3pm the same day. I adjusted ny schedule and agreed. They didn't show or send a message so I gave another chance to show anytime before 3pm the next day and they agreed. Again, no show and no communication and right at 3pm they said ok tomorrow at 3. BEWARE!! Jose is not trustworthy. He did a job at my house and did not do it correctly, after telling him of the issues, he refuses to answer and or make things right. He took shortcuts and did not want to give us copies of receipts for materials bought or a copy of the contract. After installing the grass in our front yard, we told him that the grass was not growing after a few weeks, he said that is was fine and eventually it would grow. Months later we found out that he never removed the weed barrier that was already there. That is why the grass did not grow right. We have asked him to fix the problem and no answer from him. $9500, down the drain! Jose Perez answered right away with my Yelp inquiry, then came out fairly quickly to give me an estimate. Once we agreed on the project he said he would be able to complete it within 3-4 days, but actually completed it in 2.5 days as the first day it was raining and due to the nature of the project (retaining wall) he could not really work in the rain. Additionally, while him & his assistant worked, my husband was also working on other projects outside and Jose & assistant helped my husband whenever needed. We had another company give us an estimate & was completely overpriced. Although that other company was wanting to make our house look like a million bucks, we simply could not afford it. They do whatever they have in their mind without asking you what is better for landscaping and make decisions by themselves. they received $8K for our front yard and in the end, provided us a messy service. Not happy at all with their service and their behavior. The guy brought his 10 years old son to work in our yard and the child just damaged all our plants instead of making the yard beautiful. Updated: Still waiting for almost a year to get paid back for the money we apparently "overpaid" him because he doesn't keep very good records of payments...Over 1K, so hard to let that go..very disappointing. Not to mention the few thousand more we spent to redo 2 major components of our yard that was done poorly (the deck and the BBQ island). My husband has been so sweet giving him more & more time. But after many months of hearing nothing from Jose, I guess we are never going to get our money back.. There were plenty of positives, but there were negatives that I just can't overlook. We hired Jose to do many aspects of our backyard. We assured us he was able to do everything we discussed. His quote was extremely reasonable, which we were thrilled about. They started very productive with the demo. Then it started to slow down considerably. He would tell us he's arrive on days and wouldn't. Or just 1 worker would show up and not do much. He did have some family issues that we were made aware of after weeks of poor communication and about to hire him, so we tried to be very understanding. But I had hard deadlines that he assured me would be met and it was not met. I needed things finished for events I was hosting and because they were so many weeks behind, things were thrown together at poor quality. We were supposed have a 1-step up cement deck. We ended up with a wooden, flat deck without asking us. Luckily for him we liked it, but I doubt anyone else would be ok with that kind of change. The worst part though is that the deck he installed was raw, untreated wood that his crew slapped a few coats of stain on but you could clearly see the ends and the gaps between were exposed raw wood! So needless to say, after one rainy season we had to rip it out and redo it. (My husband has since spent more $$ to redo it himself) We also had a cement BBQ island we wanted built. His cement guy did his best, but it was clearly out of his comfort zone and they didn't tell us. It looked extremely sloppy and unfinished. I had a cement expert come look at it and we had to completely redo the counter. Again: it cost more $$ to redo it. So disappointed. He did feel very bad about it at the time and offered to try to fix it, but it was not fixable in the state it's in so we had an expert do it. The pavers they did for us, the sod they installed and the landscaping looked great. He installed new irrigation and drip on our entire hill and all the ground plants, which we were so happy about. Overall the yard looks great. The deck and BBQ island did have to be redone (just did it recently) which cost us so much more and we did not get compensated for these mistakes. But after a 5-6 week project turning into an almost 12 week project we just were happy to have a usable yard. I think this was a big project for him. He clearly has lots of landscaping knowledge but little building and zero design skills. He needs to work on managing his staff better, and more staff for bigger project and do a higher quality of work if he wants to survive. read more

He quoted an outrageous price for fixing the sprinkler heads. Like $500 for parts and labor. My brother in law told me the sprinkler heads were under a dollar each. On top of that, he never came back to do the work. Plus he was arrogant as hell. read more

We were hoping to a leave a more positive review for Jose, but the quality and timeliness of his work is severely wanting and I would hate for someone else to share our experience. As mentioned in other reviews, Jose fail to show on days that he committed to and many times, would not return calls, unless we assured him of our honest review. It seemed that Jose commits to more than one job at a time without having enough crew to equally service multiple jobs. In regards to cost and use of finances, I guess it is true that you "get what you pay for," if that means that a "good deal" implies inconsistency and poor craftsmanship. Jose asked for a large portion of the project cost up front for "materials", but did little work during the first couple weeks that would have cost anything, other than paying his crew for other jobs he had committed to. At many points, he would ask for more money, without completing more work. Toward the end of the project, he had asked for the remainder of the money without having finished and at the point that we had lost all trust in his promises. We had Jose lay new sod in our back yard, install a cement/stone walkway with pea rocks and wood chips, move our jacuzzi, install a planter that wrapped around the border of our lawn and over the patio, and set up sprinklers/drip for some border plants. Because we have clay in our backyard, we assumed that he would prepare the soil appropriately before laying the sod. He did not till the soil or lay down much of a top layer (if at all). The lawn is uneven and water collects in low points. The walkway turned out well and the plants look great. It seems that the pea stone and wood chips are spread thin. The drip system isn't buried enough and sprays onto the side of the house. The retaining wall is the biggest disappointment. He used cinder blocks with a plaster facade. As mentioned in other reviews, Jose may take on projects that are outside his expertise, without letting the customer know his limitations. Every time he worked on plastering the retaining wall, he worked alone and could only mix enough plaster to complete a small section of the wall. The next time he would return, he was unable to mix the plaster to the same inconsistency or color as the previous section. This caused our wall to have patches of differing color and texture. When the job was "finished", he assured us, he would come back to fix cracks and inconsistencies, but will not respond to calls or texts. Jose is a nice guy and I'd like to imagine that he means well, but I do not trust his ability to gauge cost, time, and skill for the jobs he commits to. If he were to return and repair inconsistencies, I would be willing to update this review. Otherwise, all I can do is give fair warning to other potential clients. My advice with all future projects is to: 1. Hire for jobs you have specifically seen the contractor already complete successfully with people who would give positive reference. Don't trust someone to provide a specific service you haven't seen them do. 2. Choose products (pavers, wood chips, etc) at a home store/masonry depot IN PERSON, so you know exactly what you are getting. 3. Break up your project into phases and establish clear expectations for payment upon completion of each phase, so that you do not give too much money up front. Overall, our yard looks much better than before, but our experience was very frustrating and we are currently looking at repairs and additional work that will cost us more money (too soon after the job was completed). For this reason and because Jose does not return calls/text consistently (if at all), we cannot recommend him for work. read more
