I have known of Percy Ingle's for twenty years. East London has a huge range of excellent bakeries but little overlap. You have to be in the right place to pick the one you want and mostly all are equally good.
That said I will NOT eat 'shop bread' as in, not at all. But the East End bakers are a step above and, now and again, I would pop in a buy a small loaf, which usually turned out to be somewhat like the real bread I was familiar with growing up in Ireland.
Recently though, I was introduced to sourdough at first in Fancy London Markets at Fancy London Prices and gradually at selected local London bakeries and even in supermarkets. One day I happened to notice, in a Percy Ingle outlet near Roman Road, "ancient grains sourdough" and thought I'd take a punt.
It was probably the fifteenth 'sourdough' I'd sampled over a period of maybe two years. Many of the fifteen became temporary or firm favourites. But the introduction to 'ancient grain sourdough' was a whole new level of epicurean delight and it has become a staple of my simple cuisine and diet. I am delighted to take the trouble to write this review and to underline, in my view, that this fine old Hackney baker has got it right , really right with 'traditional' bread. read more
