Ashley is the nicest and most professional person. She took me through all of my eye tests and was so personable and amazing. She's very patient and makes sure you are always comfortable. I've been seeing Dr. Rieger for years at Pepose Vision and he's very thorough and nice as well. The front desk is always great and they checked me in quickly and I saw Dr. Rieger on time at my appointment time. I highly recommend an early morning appointment. I had Lasix surgery here years ago and started using them for my vision check ups after my long time eye doctor retired. Staff is always friendly and helpful, my appointments are on time and always efficient This visit was to their Chesterfield location so I could get in to see a Retina specialist for an eye issue. Years ago I had Lasik with Pepose. They ran tests saying that I was a good candidate for this surgery. Two years after the surgery I thought I was going blind. I went back to Pepose and I was told I had Keratoconus and that it was hereditary. I am legally blind. Nobody in my family has it or has heard of it. This condition requires very expensive contact lenses that are $1000 per lens and lasts 1 1/2 years. Insurance does not cover these lenses saying it's cosmetic. Glasses do not work. You only have one pair of eyes. read more

I go to Pepose for routine eye exams. this last exam was a bit of a disappointment. While i was being examined the technician asked me if I would be wanting an eyeglass prescription, because it would be an extra $60 charge. I was a little annoyed at that surprise since they never asked that before, and I thought that was the whole point of the eye exam, to update my eyeglass prescription. Since my current glasses weren't terrible, I declined. When I got my bill, I found that the bill included a $380 fee for "COMPREHENSIVE ESTABLISHED" plus an additional $69 fee for "REFRACTION"... and I didn't even get a new prescription. I'm not certain why this has changed, but this is way too much for an eye exam, especially considering that I don't get a new prescription. Maybe this is what optometrists charge for eye exam these days, but I'm certainly going to look for an alternative because this is way too expensive for what I'm getting. read more

Dr. Qazi is an excellent ophthalmologist but I did have to wait over an hour for the first visit and half hour more recently. However, since my eyes seem to be normal he will not see me again so I need to see another one of their drs. Qazi will concentrate on the more lucrative services as Dr. Pepose is cutting back on is surgeries. I also dislike being told they do not provide prescriptions from the extensive exams, so I need to get the Rx from an optometrist. read more

My husband and I are long time patients of Dr. Rieger. We've been very happy with the care provided by him, however when we showed up for our annual exam we were scheduled with a different doctor. I must admit, I was not happy about this at all. We drove a long way and there's never been any confusion with what doctor we were seeing. We typically receive a call to remind us about our appointments, so I was a little confused about the lack of care when nobody bothered to let us know about this change. It all made sense though when this issue carried into our appointments. The wait time was completely outrageous and the staff themselves are very inattentive. I hope this doesn't become a pattern because we enjoy Dr. Rieger as our optometrist. read more

Run, run, run before Pepose fleeces you. Had a Standard Eye Exam, covered 100% In-Network by Humana (same exam as the last 50 years at other places). Pepose sent me an Additional Bill for $69 for an Eye Exam & Rx. BUT I don't even wear/use glasses (part of Standard Eye Exam anyway). (For fine print I use Readers I get at Walmart 3 for $15.) Humana told me not to pay as its part of the standard eye exam, Medicare says the same. I called them a couple times but they angrily say "we performed the service" ... also opened a case with the BBB/Better Business Bureau & they won't resolve (others with same problem too.). NOW Peopose hired a Collection Agency to collect the $69 bogus fee, had to call the bill collectors & protest the whole bogus bill. In my opinion this is a Big Fat SCAM on me & the others on the BBB. Pepose's billing department is very aggressive & hostile, as they deal with their bogus charges on a regular basis. I called out of curiosity & Pepose said their glasses ave $900+. As I reviewed many of the complaints from others having the same issues, maybe it's time to get together and sue the pants off them. Has anyone gone through there grant program? **** PLEASE READ. I am absolutely stunned by some of these reviews. I am a businesswoman, single mother and consumer of the medical care for my family. I need to share my story because I have been through hell and back with my eyes. Jay Pepose and his staff saved my vision. 2 years ago I got diagnosed with presbyopia from another provider. I got sick from wearing bi-focals and I had to wear them. The contacts were tearing up my eyes. Everynight my eyes were irritated and when I woke up in the morning my eyes were glued shut. I needed hot towels to open my eyes. I decided to put an end to my misery and get Lasik. I first went to a place on Ballas that had a Groupon. I went in for an evaluation and after they took $250 for a consult, they told me I was not eligible for Lasik and needed another procedure (RK) that cost more and had far longer recovery. The doctor that would perform my procedure was from Dallas and literally flew home at 4pm after my procedure. I left that appointment in tears. I then reached out to Pepose Vision. I explained my experience to every person I spoke with on the phone. I went to my consultation and met with Dr. Pepose first. He had 3 separate people test my eyes to determine whether I was a candidate. All concluded that Lasik was for me. I scheduled my procedure and knew exactly what was going to happen. My procedure went off perfectly. The next day I went back for my follow up and I have not looked back. That was 2 years ago. My eyes are better than perfect and I go back every year for my follow up. You only have one set of eyes. I read some of the other reviews and they were upset about time (doctors run late) and customer service, which I have NEVER experienced. I do not want to mitigate their experiences but I encourage people to really do their research. Dr. Pepose is local, professional, kind and gives back tremendously to the St. Louis community. I have been trying to get an appointment since August 14th for a yag procedure since I had my cataract surgery there 3 years ago. I have contacted them 3 times to be told they have not looked at the doctor orders and cannot schedule surgery until they get doctor approval and kept telling me they haven't seen me since 2017. As of September 3rd I have not gotten a response! BTW I was also overcharged like so many others. I called another doctor and was given a surgery date within a week! Once again I have had problems with their billing department. They required I pay my insurance deductible up front of my cataract surgery which I did. When the bills came I was overcharged $540. I called the insurance company and they in turn called Pepose billing. The reimbursement never came so four weeks later I called Pepose billing and was told yes, they owed me the money and would send the information to bookkeeping so my check could be processed. Two weeks later, still no reimbursement so I called again and got the same story - yes, they owed me the money and would send the information to bookkeeping so the check could be processed and sent out. My youngest son has been after me for laser eye surgery for two years. I thought his eyes were too young, him being 18. Now that he's 20 and some 5 months, we went. We were told this would be a three-hour appointment. I was equipped with plenty of reading material. We walked in, registered, paid, and sat. For about two minutes. He was taken in for the review to see if he qualified for this surgery. When the evaluation was concluded, I was invited back for the other processes that needed to occur. Every step of the way was explained with precision. All post-surgery appointments were made on-the-spot, with appropriate cards for reminders. When we went into the examination room with Dr. Pepose, he was gracious and professional, performing eye examination and the final determination that my son was, indeed, an appropriate candidate for the surgery. As it went, this three-hour appointment took just two hours! Kudos for under-promising and over-delivering! Terrible communication. Multiple times contacts not arrived and they never call to tell me and change my appointment. Only find out the day of when I call to follow up because have taken day off and arrived there with nothing ready to go. Dr. Reiger gave prescription for glasses that was way off. Blamed it on eyes sight changing throughout day but contact prescription given on same day was fine for vision. Had to take glasses back and get correct prescription from his assistant. Told I could try contacts out and return if they did not work. I was there multiple times and always told I would not get fitting money back but could return contacts. Then got push back that I could not return them. Finally received money back for the contacts and paid $1,000 just for the fitting and now they are billing my insurance for the office visit. I can honestly say they have gone over and above your normal vision center. I went in for a routine exam. Got my glasses, which I had to have sent to me as I would be out of town. I called the vision center as there was an issue with my glasses I went in on Thursday (my first day back in town) met with the manager, and they fit me in to have my prescription checked. Have NEVER had this level of service. If you are searching for an ophthalmologist this is the place to go. I truly felt my concerns were heard, and were sincerely addressed. They even got me an assessment with a Dr. Pronto. I cannot recommend Pepose Vision Center enough. They are taking extra steps to ensure my glasses are correct, even though I already used my benefits for the year. I cannot recommend this company more highly than a 5! read more

Husband had an appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8. He has been looking forward to getting a surgery scheduled for months. This morning he was called and told they would have to reschedule because the doctor wouldnt be in until 9am. This office staff is rude and unhelpful. We already have an appointment with another practice. If we had canceled the appointment we would have to pay a copay...no repercussions for them. Never again Pepose. Should have read the reviews. Total Rip-off. I made an appointment for an evaluation. I was specifically told I would be responsible for $69.00 of the total evaluation fee. Although the evaluation was very thorough (took 3-1/2 hours), I decided not to pursue the surgery as the total cost was prohibitive ($8,000, two separate operations, and I still wouldn't have 20/20 vision). No one from the office ever contacted me thereafter to see if I was interested. Two months later I received a bill for $122.00. Then again, a month later another bill for $95.00. When I complained, they adamantly insisted I owed the most recent billing. Wonder how long this scheme persists. This was an insurance rip-off to bill as many procedures as possible without regard or notification to the patient additional costs would ensure. This place is all about the money. read more

I do not recommend Pepose to anyone. Their staff is extremely disorganized, unprofessional, unhelpful, and rude. It takes a village to send records to my new doctor's office with a one week lead time and multiple follow ups. Living in the archaic times trying to send docs back and forth with customers using a fax machine... had to wait 2 days till someone who knew how to send through email could help. Do your research and go somewhere else. Hopefully Patty in record keeping can get more training on how to speak to customers in a professional way over the phone... read more

When I went in for my check up after surgery, They had the wrong eye written down. I had a problem with Dr Holecamp. She would not answer questions. I did complain about a rolling chair that was used for tests. It was unsafe. I was ignored. Dr Holecamp sent me out with a scheduled appointment it was never given to the right people. I went there for the appointment and it had not been given to the front desk. Dr Holecamp has gotten better with the question and answer part. There are times I stand and wait for a phone call even though I was there first. They need more people on their desk read more

I had an eye appointment this morning to check my eye surgery from over 3 years ago, drove there during rush hour, and after checking in was informed they wouldn't see me because of an outstanding bill (which I have been disputing for over a year from my original surgery). NEVER have I experienced such incompetency from a billing department, nor have I ever been turned away for service because of an unpaid balance. I have a pristine credit history, and as far as my records and research show the error is on the end of the billing department. Multiple phone calls and requests statements and communication go without response, and when I have received a response the message is conflicted and different depending on who I have spoken to. Incredible (UN) Ethics at this "Institute" I called to make an appt for Cataract Surgery. I was told that I needed to have Exam, etc prior. I inquired, and they checked, to see if I was in network. Indeed I was, I was told, by them and my insurance. So I went through all the diagnostics -- and then -- when the diagnostics were completed and I was trying to schedule for the Cataract surgery (as was my chief concern from day one) -- I was told that the Surgery Center was in a separate network!!! And that I was NOT in that network!!! All of this money that I spent (after insurance), not to mention the time and the inconvenience, was completely useless -- because other opthalmalogy clinics need to do their own diagnostics. Pepose knows this -- it is incredibly UNETHICAL not to tell me, when I call in to obtain Cataract surgery, that their diagnostic clinic is separate from the surgical clinic ... and that they are both in separate networks. Worse than all of this unethical behavior was the snarky incredibly smug and unsympathetic billing manager - Elena. She is incredibly bad to work with. She would offer not even the slightest compromise on something so unethical. The whole operation seems scummy. Bottom Line -- this is a money hungry operation. If I could put a negative star I would. We have been trying to get a refund check for 4 MONTHS. I call every week and get the same run around. These people are highly trained in telling you BS. 4 MONTHS! And supposedly they only issue refund checks once a month. I was finally "allowed" to speak to the supervisor today. And, again, BS. My husband did have his eyes corrected by another Dr. For 1/3 the cost of Pepose. I had an appointment today 11/9/18 at 12:15. Showed up early for the paperwork. Exam was complete and done on time. got to the part about scheduling the surgery and found out I would need somebody not only to transport me both ways but, they had to stay there the whole time. I work for a transportation company that would give me door to door service. Was told this was not good enough. What do people who live alone do? This just isn't right. Have insurance and can't use it. I know this isn't a Pepose problem but, what do people do? Go blind I guess. read more

Although we have been very happy with Dr Holekamp, I am very frustrated with the Pepose Institute. We go regularly for eye shots and have been going regularly during this Pandemic shut down, following all the rules of wearing masks, taking temps, social distancing etc. That is no problem. However now at this appointment they have decided for no logical reason that I can't accompany my 90 year old mostly blind mother. Why this change? I checked in, had my temp taken, had on a mask, and was sitting with her in an empty waiting room, when suddenly they decided I couldn't be there and made me leave. At 90 years old, my mother needs me there to hear what the doctor has to say and to help her get from place to place. At no time was I a danger to anyone. There was absolutely no one else in the room. VERY disappointed in their LACK OF CONCERN FOR THEIR PATIENTS just to appear politically correct. read more

My husband got lasik surgery back in 2000. It was a new and promising procedure. He had very poor vision his whole life. He could not see the big clock next to the bed without glasses. We lived in St. Louis and went to Dr. Pepose because he was a pioneer for the surgery. My husband is very happy with his improved vision. A year after, we moved to Albuquerque so he did not have the full follow up care, and dry eyes bothered him when we lived in the southwest. His eyes would get bloodshot and sore. But eye drops helped and now we live in the midwest again and that is much better. Also he got the surgery when he was 40 so he now wears bifocals since his distance is off my a smidge and reading glasses help his up close vision. So it has not been a fix-all. He didn't get free or discounted "follow up" surgery, which I think is the same peeling back the cornea deal, and I am not sure would be recommended. He doesn't have perfect vision, but it is so much better. He works in law enforcement and this has been a great improvement to his life. Back in the day we paid $5000, and it was worth it. We really like Dr. Pepose and believe he is one of the best. I think that patients need to have realistic expectations. read more

Pepose Vision Experience - May-June 2017 I apologize for the lengthy review but I felt it was very important to wait this long to get it right and be objective. May 10, 2017 - Appointment with Dr. Rieger for an eye irritation/infection problem. Specified this when I booked the appointment. Upon arriving, the assistants were preparing me for an eye exam. Told them I was not there for an exam but for Dr. Rieger to check my right eye which was irritated. Dr. Rieger examined me and told me I needed to have a Yag Laser Capsulotomy; not an irritation. I booked the surgery for June 15. When I went home I had some nagging doubts about needing this surgery. My right cataract was done February 28, 2007. I started researching the web and found this condition usually occurs 2-5 years after the cataract surgery. My right cataract was done 10 years prior. Seemed odd that I needed this 10 years after my original cataract surgery. My issue was more an irritation not vision which I explained to Dr. Rieger. A week before my surgery was scheduled I decided to call and talk to Dr. Rieger with some questions. I tried calling Pepose four times. Each time I was slammed on hold without being asked if I could hold. The last time I actually yelled at the lady answering the phone "DO NOT PUT ME ON HOLD" but of course she did. At this point I am very upset. I had to drive to the Pepose on Clarkson Road (8 miles from my house) and go in to try and talk to the Dr. or someone with some questions. The place was chaos. At that point I decided I did not want this company putting a laser to my eye. I spoke with a manager and cancelled my surgery. With the incompetence I witnessed, I made her sign my paperwork stating I cancelled the surgery because I did not want my insurance to be billed. I told them to cancel my followup appointment; they assured me they would. The day before my scheduled surgery I received calls from Pepose regarding my upcoming surgery. I called back and told them I had cancelled it. I also received a call the following week re: my follow up appointment. They did not even know I never had the surgery. I decided to go to another ophthalmologist for this issue and did not mention anything about my experience at Pepose. This is an ophthalmologist that retired ophthalmologists use so I felt very confident in this doctor's diagnosis. He did not mention anything about needing a Capsulotomy. His opinion was I had developed an intolerance/allergy to either my contact or contact solution. I tried a different solution which did not help. He then prescribed a different brand of contact which fixed my problem. The last thing I want to mention is that I checked my insurance claims. Pepose billed my insurance twice for the exam ($238) on May 10. My insurance caught the first double billing since it was submitted for the same thing on the same date. So my question to you would be - would you want this company putting a laser to your eye? read more

I'm a 29 year old male. Just had LASIK at Pepose last week. Was considering it for years, and finally decided to pull the trigger a few months ago. My vision is my livelihood, so I did extensive due diligence on the best providers around the country. I had no issue with flying to another city for the procedure if I felt more comfortable with the doctor/facility. I was very happy to discover that one of nation's leading providers was in my own backyard. When I scheduled the exam, I was pleased to learn that it would take nearly 3 hours. The facility was state of the art and the staff extremely professional. I underwent a battery of tests to determine whether I was a good candidate for the procedure. When they informed me that I was, I felt much more comfortable moving forward given their thoroughness. Luckily, I was able to schedule the procedure later the same week (I assume someone else had cancelled). Dr. Pepose himself performed the surgery. The surgery itself was relatively painless, even if somewhat anxiety-provoking (we're talking about the eyes after all!). But I felt that Dr. Pepose had things firmly under control the entire time. Hearing his calming voice during the procedure was very reassuring. The surgery lasted less than 20 minutes, and I was in and out of the facility in 2 hours. Very short recovery period. At my 24 hour post-op checkup (which I drove myself to), I read the bottom line on the chart with no problem (I think that was 20/10?). No discomfort or complications whatsoever. Eye drops a few times a day and plastic shields over the eyes for the first 3-4 nights (to prevent inadvertent rubbing). Best $6k I ever spent. read more

I was a patient of Pepose Institute for over 20 years and will never go back after my last horrible experience. I feel I was severely mistreated. I had to wait 2 hours for an appointment. It was apparent they were overbooked. The procedure done took less than 5 minutes. Then I was sent off with a prescription to get drops that cost over $300. The pharmacy said I should have been give a coupon by the doctor's office or at least a prescription for the generic brand which was much less the cost. It was very stressful trying to get this accomplished after the fact when I was home. On top of all this, It was mandatory that I pay for the procedure in advance, which I did. I was told what the procedure would cost and I paid the fee they told me to pay the day before after they checked with my insurance. Now they are coming after me to pay more money! When I tried to explain my disgust with all this, they could have cared less. I need to find a new eye doctor now! read more
