I had an emergency eye situation and was not hopeful that Dr. Steele, my very reliable but annual optometrist, would make room for me within an hour's notice but Dr. Steele and his team got me in asap. I had an acute cornea abrasion and Dr. Steele accessed me, provided some medicinal help, then made the call to a cornea specialist where I was seen within 12 hrs. Dr. Steele. saved my vision! I walked in his office, without an appointment, and told him that I had huge globs floating in my eye. He sat me down, took a picture of the inside of my eye, and said, "You have a torn retina. You need surgery, immediately". He called the Retina Institute, got me in within 30 minutes and they performed emergency surgery. Dr. Steele is impressive. He seems to approach his role like a scientist and asks good questions to make sure he is targeting his prescription appropriately. Because he doesn't sell glasses, there isn't the big sales pitch that you encounter at optometrists who own an optical center. He provides a full prescription that you can take anywhere. Beware, however, that the Costco optical at that location is very difficult to deal with, so don't default to them just because Dr. Steele is there. Dr. Steele just found an issue with my vision that someone could have easily overlooked. How? He asked questions and dug a little deeper than the average optometrist. Consequently, I received a referral to a specialist instead of just getting a new prescription. Yes, it sucks that I'm getting older and changes are taking place but I really couldn't be happier with his services! Unfortunately, my exam required a bit more time than allotted. My apologies to the person who had to wait but these things happen. Fresh from an appointment with Dr. Steele, I am writing to highly recommend him and his team for your optometry needs. Steele Vision is the independent optometrist associated with the Costco in Manchester, MO. This is my third visit to a Costco-affiliated optometrist in a third different state, and by far this was the best experience (all were very good, this was best). Mr. M. was in town for a brief time and desperately needed to get a post-COVID eye exam in before subsequent travel. Setting up an appointment over the phone was easily facilitated by his polite, friendly, and efficient team. $70 for a non-contact lens examination (I believe it is $99/$100 for the contact lens exam). The team observed COVID precautions, all wore masks, seating inside was limited while the hand sanitizer was abundant. Check in was a snap and within minutes Dr. Steele had finished his prior appointment and I was being seen on time. Things started out really well, when Dr. Steele turned to acknowledge me while he was wrapping up with another patient and told me he would be with me in a quick moment. The exam features a standard battery of eye tests (such as glaucoma "puff-test," slit lamp exam, which I won't get detail), I will note that the test did not require dilation (where dilating drops are instilled and you have 20-30 minutes of impaired vision after the exam). I am assuming that the equipment used is of the newer sophisticated variety that obviates the need for dilation. If having your pupils dilated is important to you, definitely ask about this because it was not given as an option (not that anyone would want this option...it is uncomfortable). What was very impressive about Dr. Steele's style were his: fast and efficient pace or work, his friendly attitude, his interest in explaining eye anatomy and answering questions, his clearly conveying options, and thoroughness. Point 1 Time: I was in and out in 15 minutes. 20 if I include my getting to check in, waiting at the front door, and then my time paying/checking out. Dr. Steele had everything efficiently running and his workspace was very clearly and cleanly organized, allowing him to efficiently move around and conduct the examination without it being too cramped. Point 2 Friendly: Whether it be his friendly comments about us all battling through COVID or his casual chatting about where I live in Virginia. If you're at all uneasy about visiting a health provider, Dr. Steele is the one you want to visit with a calm, chill, warm attitude that comes across right from the get-go. Point 3 In-depth explanations: Though he was clear to point out that he won't explain if patients are not interested, he was quick to efficiently and clearly explain eye anatomy and variations in my eyes. His explanation of variation in nerve anatomy and distinguishing between variable physiology and pathology were solid. Though he was speaking in technical terms after being asked a few technical questions, I got the distinct impression that he could clearly explain potentially complicated ideas (such as astigmatism) in everyday clear language. Point 4 Q&A: It was easy and great to be able to quickly volley questions to Dr. Steele and he hit them back like Federer. Super efficient, open to fully helping me to understand. Point 5 Options: When it came time to understand my options for glasses, he carefully and clearly described three different options to meet optimal needs, budget, and ease of use. You got the feeling Dr. Steele really wanted to be sure you got the best glasses set-up. Point 6 Thoroughness: As is should be, Dr. Steele performed a thorough pre-exam health screening asking about a family history of eye disease, current prescriptions, and any precipitating factors that brought me into the office. Throughout the eye exam he was taking time to demonstrate different eye settings and highlight differences, being certain that I had achieved the best prescription. There are people who do their job and go through the motions. There are others who have found a great niche work environment. Dr. Steele recounted how he used to work at a large group practice where he felt rushed, but now found a better place where he could spend a bit more time and have better patient outcomes. Similarly, his team of support staff (both clinical and administrative) are fantastic and worked really efficiently to assist patients in a friendly manner. Shame on me for not asking their names, they were fantastic and deserve credit too! If everyone had the same pleasant demeanor and attitude about serving patients and promoting health as Dr. Steele and his staff, we all wouldn't mind visiting the doctor. read more

Best RX I have had for glasses/contacts, and the equipment in the office is more up to date than other places I have been. Does not take insurance, however VSP reimbursed me in full for the office visit and the contacts I ordered through CostCo. read more

Dr. Steele was very professional and clear in explaining my prescription and how it had changed. We were able to discuss some other long-standing issues with my eyes. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. I brought my son who got contacts for the first time. Dr. Steele sat with him and taught him to use them. He was infinitely patient and my son felt confident in their use when we left. As for the reviewer who was unhappy about his glasses - that's NOT Dr. Steele. That's Costco. Dr. Steele doesn't have anything to do with glasses. Just issues with your eyes and your prescription. Dr. Steele is an outstanding optometrist. I had not had my eyes checked for over 15 years before my appointment with Dr. Steele. He was very thorough and informative during the exam. A few weeks later I got shingles on my forehead near my eye, Dr Steele saw me immediately to check me to see if the shingles had traveled to my eye. He was able to work me in between patients with no wait and no charge! He truly cares about his patients! Highly recommend this doctor! read more

Dr. Steele and his staff were amazing! So friendly and informative and got the job done quickly without feeling rushed. I was really surprised by the quality and friendliness service, it was actually a really pleasant experience. Typically my optometrists have always been crass and rushed but Dr. Steele took his time to explain everything and give me options all while smiling. No complaints about Dr. Steele. He is very thorough. The issue is the eyeglass sales people. Because the nature of buying eyeglasses causes very close head to head contact, and because I could feel her breath coming out from under one of those clear shield-types of mask, I asked the salesperson if she'd been vaccinated. I was not making any judgements or asking for any political POV. Just kind of expected to feel safe. She answered, "I am a healthy American. I don't need a shot". I told her I did not want anything more to do with her and moved to the far end of the counter. While I was interacting with another employee, she yelled instructions to the woman as to how to fix my glasses. She was obnoxious, but worse, I felt unsafe. That "healthy American" who handled my eyeglasses and breathed on me could very easily have passed a dangerous virus on to my "Real American Hero" husband, who sacrificed his health to make the world a better, safer place for people like her. Shame on Costco for allowing this type of risk to the public. read more

I was a walk-in at 2:45 p.m. and was told he could see me by 3 p.m. because the 3 p.m. appointment had cancelled. Another walk-in came in at 3:25 p.m. and was seen before me for a non-emergency. Finally, at 3:45 p.m., I was seen. The O.D. was unhelpful in explanation and dismissive; furthermore, he did nothing to treat or alleviate my problem and our meeting was over within five minutes. He did find the time to suggest a completely unnecessary, unrelated, and expensive examination, however. For this five-minute meeting after an hour of waiting, I was treated to a hefty bill for an "office visit." Never coming back, and highly suggest not going in the first place. read more

My experience was totally different. First, let me say that Dr. Steele was fantastic. I really don't think I have ever had a more thorough exam. I have gone to Pearle and Lens Crafters too and I thought they were good but I must say that I was very impressed with Dr. Steele's knowledge and as you get older it is nice to have an explanation in detail. To everyone out there reading "Jim H.'s" review, he is doing a grave injustice to both Dr. Steele and the Costco Optical Department (which happen to be TWO completely separate entities.). And both WONDERFUL to do deal with! DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU THROW SOMEONE UNDER THE BUS JIM! Dr. Steele in an INDEPENDENT optometrist who rents space from Costco for his office. (Hence you don't need a Costco membership card in order to have an appointment/exam w/Dr. Steele.) Dr. Steele has nothing to do with the actual Costco Optical Shop. His affiliation with Costco is to offer an added level of service and convenience for Costco members. Having a doctor on site is a terrific idea, but it's important to know that "Steele Vision" is an INDEPENDENTLY owned and operated business. "Jim H." why you would arbitrarily say negative things, inclusive of Dr. Steele's name and reputation, over you being disgruntled about the time frame it took to receive a pair of glasses purchased from the Costco Optical Shop?...Get over it buddy! Dr. Steele is an absolute professional and wonderful doctor. My entire family, including my parents as well as my children, have been seeing Dr. Steele for over 3 years and we just love him! I can only give glowing compliments & recommendations about Dr. Steele and his office assistant. They are thorough & personable! The ease of access, ease of care, attention to detail, and very low costs are just a few of the many things that make us loyal patients. This review is for the eyeglass buying experience (didn't see the dr, just bought glasses) If you like long lines and incompetent technicians with slow computers this place is for you! Just cross your fingers that after waiting in line you don't get the guy that can't work a computer, type in a name off a card, or remember what he made copies of 2 minutes before only to send you out of the store to contact your insurance because "it can't be verified in the computer" and now it's the "customers problem" to call the insurance. I called..guess what!?!? Nothing wrong, the guy just typed in my name wrong! OMG! so then, you get to get back in that back of the line to wait another half hour to tell the guy, hey, they said you must have typed something in wrong. gosh only knows what my glasses will be like when I receive them...I do not give it good odds that my prescription will turn out right or that I'll get the right pair of frames, that guy was a disaster. My confidence level in that transaction = 0% I could go on, but i won't...I've already wasted an hour and a half just to order a pair of glasses! read more

I have had nothing but exceptional service at the Manchester Costco Optical Department. The equipment is state of the art! Dr. Steele is wonderful and the women that I've delt with at the vision center counter have been courteous, helpful, and very receptive to all of the customers. I think their prices and selection are terrific too. You may have to wait a week for your glasses, but that's industry standard unless you go to the mall shops in which you pay more for hour service. Friendly and patient. Gave me all the time I needed and answered all my questions. Explained everything in detail but so I could understand. I have never had an eye doctor explain to me why I am having the vision troubles I have. I have always had double vision even with eye glasses.
