I've learned that when reading food reviews in the mountains, knock off a star or two and that will be the actual rating of a restaurant. I'm quite disappointed with the food at Pepe Osaka's. To preface, the Mexican-Japanese fusion food I ate in Mexico was fantastic, so I may have been presumptuous with my expectations here. Our server gave us an extremely thorough run-down of the menu. I wasn't feeling tacos, so I ordered a poké bowl and my husband ordered the ramen. The rice in the poké bowl was super mushy which kind if ruined the whole bowl for me. The ramen bowl was not hitting either. I expected a birria consomé-type broth, but the flavor was just off, almost spoiled. Up side is that the margaritas were delicious! But I'd say skip the restaurants around this area and just opt for fast food. It's way more worth your money! read more

They have super high-quality food and fresh fish. The interior is fun, cute, and almost has a club feel. There are adventurous items on the menu, such as octopus and soft shell crab and more tame choices such as chicken and steak. They even have vegetarian and vegan options! The fried plantains are out of this world and our server allowed us to get a couple of an appetizer off menu. They are known for their fried fish tacos and I definitely recommend ordering one. I tried the mix and match combo and with Baja style tilapia, steak tataki, and ahi poke ceviche. It was a good way to try different things. Next time I go, I want to try the tempura lobster! I absolutely love Pepe Osakas. I've been coming here for about 12 years and always make a point to go here when I'm in town. Their chips and salsa are top notch, and you MUST order the chili garlic edamame. The plantains that come as a garnish are incredible, so I always order extra. The shrimp, spicy tuna, and ahi ceviche tacos are all to die for. No offense Pepe, but I would not recommend the sushi burrito. The overall Asian-Mexican fusion is awesome, and very unique. Wow how have I not already been here?! We ventured in on a rainy evening for happy hour and were warmly greeted and took seats at the bar that had TVs with football and playing sound for the CU game. Eclectic restaurants with a strange layout. On the left is lots of seating which suggests that there are long lines and waits. There's a middle section with tables and chairs. We wanted to sit there, but got told that staffing was short and that area wasn't open. We were relegated to the bar area where it was all tall table top. I asked for a bar chair (that had a back) for Jon since he was a fall risk. I sat on the hard, square stools. Sigh. Jon ordered a 3 piece enchiladas with salmon. He LOVED the salmon. They were large pieces and the pink sauce was delicious! I ordered the spicy Diablo Octopus in a bowl. While I LOVED the octopus, the Diablo sauce was very weak and one note. I had to use the spicier salsa to give it some pizzazz. My plantain was delicious but kind of hidden under a bunch of rice. There was also a large lemon wedge and 1/2 a raw jalapeño also hidden under the rice. My octopus wasn't as yummy as Jon's salmon. Prices here are super JACKED UP. My Diablo octopus was $39! Jon's enchilada was correctly priced at $28. My horchata was $7. Highway robbery! They also added a kitchen surcharge of 3.5% that was also TAXED. The suggested tipping at this establishment is 20%, 22% and 25! Highway ROBBERY!! read more

We were staying in town and needed food, and this place was within walking distance. So off we went! The server told us that they're known for their fish tacos and their infused tequilas. Based on that, I ended up ordering a cilantro jalapeño margarita. Should I have ordered alcohol on my first night of being at 9k feet above sea level? Probably not. But he sold these margaritas hard. And it was good. I ended up getting the three taco combo -- one spicy tuna, one ahi, and one grilled mahi mahi. The spicy tuna was definitely spicy! The ahi tastes nice and fresh, and the mahi mahi was decent too. The vibe inside was very chill. It was giving "hometown bar." We pulled up here being super skeptical since most of us are from San Diego and/or lived in San Diego, however we were all shook with Pepe Osaka's ramen. We did not expect it to be this delicious and some of us have been to Japan. Apparently one of the chefs lived in Japan for some time and learned their craft and crafted this gem. It is literally a perfect blend of Mexican-Asian fusion. It literally hit like home, like some of the comida mexicana we've had growing up. If you're in the area I highly recommend the ramen! My other friend tried the Mahi Mahi Al Pastor Tacos and he said they were very flavorful. Not to mention, how big the tacos are! I thought they would lowkey be like Tijuana style but they're damn near mini quesadilla size. The employees and manager Rolando were very welcoming and friendly. WOW!!! What an incredible meal in Winter Park. We chose this place due to proximity to our condo and it did not disappoint. The menu offers something for everyone. Always drove past this spot while going past Fraser, but today we decided to stop by and give it a try. I might have gotten lucky while coming in, but the owner greeted us and even explained the menu to us which was very helpful. The chips and salsa they started us off with was amazing. A cilantro style green salsa I would buy a whole tub of if I could. I think my main complaint was that the salmon in the bowl was not boneless, so I spent a lot of time picking salmon bones out of my food. Can you technically eat them? Yes. Did I want to? No. I will say though, the horchata sake was actually really good, and you could clearly taste the horchata. We've been to this place multiple times and it's always been really good. This time, I wasn't enthralled. It was good, but not great. Monday night, not busy at all. They even had the front section roped off. They sat us in the bar area, which was fine. We ordered our drinks and dinner. They both came out less than 5 minutes after ordering. The margaritas were great. I had the apple cider with mezcal. The chicken was cold, barely above room temp. There was a piping hot plantain on top. The biggest hack ever was discovering this gem of a restaurant right off Winter Park's ski area. After a full day on the slopes, I cannot imagine going anywhere else. The last time I tried this place was several years ago. I remember sending my food back because it arrived at the table partially frozen. More recently, while spending a weekend in Winter Park and feeling optimistic, I agreed to try it again. I'll give credit where due: my food was not frozen this time. Unfortunately, my first bite told me that overall things had barely changed. While I don't expect my food to remain hot throughout the meal, I do expect it to arrive above room temperature. My first bite of rice was pasty and actually cold. The barely warmed-over enchiladas were served on a bed of unrecognizable mush drowning in unappetizing sauce which did not help. Two thirds through my margarita it became unpalatable, as if a spoonful of salt or something unidentified had settled at the bottom. I'm not known as someone who has unreasonably high culinary standards, but I do not understand how this place keeps the glowing reputation it seems to have. The sad thing is that I wrote a similar review last time. Oh well. There's no reason to worry about going back now. read more
