It was Saturday night and we stopped in because our tire had gone completely flat. At that point we only needed assistance removing the tire so we could replace it. We were told to leave the car overnight because the shop was too busy. Since that wasn't an option for us, we decided we would bring the car back in the morning and simply asked for help removing the tire. Unfortunately, no one offered assistance or even provided a better tool to help us remove it ourselves. This was especially disappointing because we purchased all four tires from this location just a few months ago. Customer service should matter, especially for existing customers. My car had just been to a garage getting an alignment so I took it in to a mechanic for a 2nd opinion. They lifted it and said these parts were totally intact. Place is a scam. A few years ago after an oil change they told me I needed a headlight repaired, when I picked the car up it had no issues. I brought my car into pep boys complaining about the AC sounding like it was sputtering and about to die. Pep boys told me the issue was my filters needed to be changed and the AC liquid was low. I trusted their judgement so paid (400 dollars) and moved on with my life. several days later my AC completely died. I brought the car back to pep boys and was told that they would not charge another diagnostic fee (which they did). They then said the fan had died. I dont know if they were trying to milk money out of me and thats why they didnt even start my AC the first time to hear the problem (id imagine a competent mechanic wouldve understood the fan was dying if they had just turned the AC on to listen) but this also shows that the fan was never checked the first time around and I did not need the services they told me would fix the problem. This is either an incompetent mechanic they hired or the business tries to milk money out of its customers. I tried to reach a resolution with pep boys regarding this and the only thing the manager was willing to do was offer me a discount on future services. However I dont intend to ever go back to his location due to trust issues, I was willing to go to other pep boys locations but corporate wouldnt even talk to me. Went in for first set of brakes ever installed on my Toyota, I bought the truck new. When I got home I checked the brake fluid reservoir and noticed it was overfilled. Knowing it is not good to have your brake fluid overfilled I took the truck back to have some removed. The guy at the register tried to sell me brake fluid flush which I refused, I just wanted the excess fluid taken out. I went to have a tire replaced and when I got my car back my rim was scratched all along the edge. My rims are in prestige condition, not a single one has a scratch. When I confronted them about it, the service manager Carlos Vargas negated everything I said making it out as if I was complaining about something minor and told me he would not take responsibility for the damage. I had a picture on my phone from the day prior when I was changing the tire to put my spare on where you can see ZERO damage to the rim and he said "it's weird you have a picture of your rim" he acted as if I was trying to pull one over on them asking me if I was trying to get a new rim out of them. I said no I want the damages fixed that weren't there when I got here today. Instead, he was incredibly rude and offered no solutions to the problem just kept saying he won't take responsibility and walked away to avoid it. I have never written a review in my life good or bad for any services or company I've dealt with and I'm a very quiet introverted person and HATE to complain or cause conflict but I feel robbed and incredibly disrespected and felt I needed to say something to help others avoid this situation. I went to un a quick errand in my lunch break. To my surprise I had a dead battery. A neighbor jumped my car and the battery died again while at a light. This pep boys was on the corner. I've had mixed experiences here but it was close and a passer by was nice enough to give me a 2nd jump. I called the store. I told them the problem. They were expecting me and had a bay ready. A free diagnostic was done and I definitely needed a new battery. I wasn't given price options, just one for $200 installed. Within 15 min it was installed and I was back on my way. I am immuno surpressed and waited outside. Everyone had masks on which made me feel better. I was thirsty and was pleasantly surprised u could buy drinks or snacks without walking far. I took my Diet Coke and was only 1-2 way through when the car was done. Dara as the person who answered my call and let the service team know to expect me. I live in PA but work in NJ and have a well maintained Lexus vehicle with 60k miles on it. Went in to have my car inspected, nothing more, nothing less. 2wks prior had my mechanic in NJ do an oil change, change the filters, rotate tires, flush my transmission fluid and check my brakes, nothing needed to be done to my car I made sure of it before bringing to PB for inspection. 20 mins after drop off Carlos (the apparent Mgr) called to inform me that my front rotors were completely rusted thru and I needed new break pads in the front & back AND then I was going to need a wheel alignment as well. You can imagine my surprise! When I explained the work that my mechanic had just done 2wks prior and what he told me Carlos said "well I don't know what to tell you, this is what the inspector said." So I asked "ok, how much would this all cost?" His reply "around $1,086" then he further informed me that he didn't know if "the inspector would pass or fail my car because of this. I told Carlos to please find out knowing full well my car was fine. He called me back not 10mins later and said "we're going to give you your inspection sticker" I was astounded as he had just informed me that my brakes absolutely needed to be replaced now he changed his entire tune and demeanor but not before saying "you should get another mechanic as your mechanic isn't very good". What a sleaze bag Carlos is... I understand you work on commission but I just nailed you in a complete lie! If the situation was as bad as you painted it to be you would've NEVER passed the vehicle for inspection! Talk about trying to rip customers off. Not only should Carlos be ashamed (and I know he's not) but PepBoys should be ashamed of employing someone who so blatantly tries to con people into services they don't need. The warranty company determined that was a lie. old pieces from the other engine were put on their including the PC Valve. We later found this out when my son called the warranty people. The conversation got heated because at this point I had enough of the lies and scams. I said to Carlos that it's all about money for this business he said don't we all work for money and my reply to him, yes but ethically. So my thought is for a man to only be a manager not OWNER, but manager making probably $45K a year the only reason why he goes so hard for this business is because he's getting a cut. I think he's over charging customers and pocketing the money, he comes across as man with no morals. This is the only way it makes sense for Carlos to make a statement like that and to go so hard for a business that he's not the owner of. Carlos call the cops which I told him I did not care and he could do so. When the cops came they had no issue with us and we explained and they suggested we take it up with the court at this point. My son then followed up with the Director of Pep Boys Brian to see if we could get the matter resolved. Brian pretty much supported Carlos and all his lies. So all the negative reviews and complaints from multiple customers about Carlos, I guess are all lies. It's funny because when we told Carlos we were going to complain to the Director he said he don't care what we tell him, well I see why now. The man lies so well that the Director believes his nonsense. So with all that being said Pep Boys are saying they are not liable to have this fixed and saying it's has to be done via the warranty company. Neither Carlos nor the Director Brian has tried to resolve this issue with us when they were the ones that made the repair. Had something been wrong with that engine why would they not test it first prior to putting it in. None of it makes sense. To add insult to injury there are now more issues with the car after it was with Pep Boys. All they do is tear your car up so they can rip you off with unnecessary repairs. Oh and to add more injury to insult the PC Valve was under $40 and takes less than 15 minutes to replace, but they wanted to charge us $600. Oh it even gets better the PC Valve wasn't even the issue. It's been replaced and the check engine light is still on and I am sure it's due to the things that was printed out from the Auto Zone report. That Carlos refused to fix as well. So since we have had no resolve from the Director Brian, we will take this matter further because this is just unacceptable and for the Director to allow this speaks volumes about him and the company's business ethics. My suggestion to all if you had any issues with Pep Boys file a complaint with the attorney general. I am a regular customer at this location, yesterday I utilized your 120 point inspection for an older car that I am sending with daughter to college, and I am disappointed. What was reported to me verbally was there is an oil leak, I had the oil leak addressed at another mechanic. We all remember when this car was leaking oil there was oil on the driveway, everything is clear currently we are confident that the oil leak was addressed, I understand it is an older car. But where my disappointment lies mostly is I thought there was report that I would have access too especially since this is an older car, I received nothing constructive from the money that I was charged for this inspection, nothing. From as simple as a light needing to be replaced to something important. They ALWAYS forget. Had my car there for an inspection. I bought my car in this week for a right wheel bearing fix. They drove it twice and the tech said he heard nothing. There was a distinct growling noise from right front tire. My appointment was at 11:30 a.m. I call at 4 and they had not even looked at it yet. I was told 3 hours. They drive it again and same story. After wasting my entire day they couldn't "hear" it. I picked my car up and they guy told me "maybe you didn't explain it properly."He was rather rude to say the least. I am a senior and I could hear it fine. Maybe they all need hearing aids. We were going here for years and actually liked the staff, but that's just not enough when we're talking about fixing your means of transportation. We took our car here 4 or 5 times over a 6 month period due to a squeeling noise. They told us it was a belt and that they fixed it, but then the noise started again. It ended with us on the side of the road with a car full of steam because (as we found out later) the 'fixed' belt broke and it was the one that controlled the heating and cooling of the engine. I've had my oil changed at this Pepboys in the past and was hesitant to do it again because they never call to tell me it's done, and they did poor work on fixing an oil leak (it was not fixed). They didn't close the hood properly after changing the oil this time. When I got up to speed on the highway, my hood flipped open and cracked my windshield and dented my roof. The hood is ruined. I was thankfully not hurt, and no other car was damaged, but boy was I scared. I am trying to get Pepboys to fix it for free, as I consider this their fault. Classic Pep Boys. You should know what you're getting ahead of time. 1) Very slow service, and slower by 2 hours than what they promised. 2) Disengaged staff 3) Average skill. You could take your Honda for an oil change or inspection, but not your Mercedes for anything, or even your Geo Metro for something major. With that said, they are honest, and won't rip you off, or tell you something is wrong when it isn't (their errors are almost the other way it feels like). So for that alone they get 3 stars, since at least 30-40% of mechanics will openly rip you off if you are unaware. read more
