Right away Ricardo saw my stress and was compassionate and thoughtful in managing my expectations for the car. By closing time, they had a diagnosis that it was totaled, but they gave me another ~45 minutes to gather my things and make travel arrangements. The whole team I interacted with was very compassionate and kind to me throughout this process. I would give them a minus zero. I scheduled a smog inspection for my wife's car and Ricardo confirmed that Guillermo the smog technician would be in on the day we made the appointment. They even sent me an email reminder the day before the appointment. On the day of the appointment, my wife took the car in and was told that Guillermo was on vacation. I called back and asked for a manager to call me back. They finally called me 3 days later and said that the technician had a family emergency. I asked why they didn't call their customers to notify them and was told it was last minute then I was offered a 10% discount. What a joke. Horrible customer service is an understatement and a 10% discount is unacceptable. Stay away from this place. They obviously don't care about their customers. read more

Looking for a spot close to home that could help me buy and install four tires. Online it said they had my size in stock and called in to confirm. Made an appointment for the following day to install the tires. Walked into the shop and said regardless of my appointment they were too busy and would not work on the car until two more hours. I went in to get a diagnostic report for my car They said I needed a new engine They gave me a receipt with no codes they said my car was leaking oil and that I had no oil in the engine. my car is not leaking oil and it had oil inside the engine. I call their offices to see if I could get a refund. And they said yes , I went to the location in Downey on Lakewood, Adrien helped me I gave him the receipt and explained to him the situation I was there for a refund then he proceeded to tell me that the Manager wasn't there and that he would refund me when he gets a chance so to look in my account in two to three week to see if the money is in my account then he stated that he remembered me that I was there to get something for free . I said excuse me !! Then he said when I picked up my car that I was in a hurry I told him what does that have to do with my report that I paid for . I bought new tires for my daughter's Cadillac at Costco and they include everything except the alignment. I decided to call Pep Boys last night and the employee asked me the year, make and model and made me an appointment for today after the tire installation at a nearby Costco. Upon arrival at the designated time, a different employee said they didn't have the proper equipment to perform the job. His manner was brisk and rude to my daughter. I failed a smog check earlier this week and the issue from the smog location was brought to my attention, they were nice enough to print out the issue . My air conditioner thermostat was contributing towards the problem. I figured going to the pep boys in Downey California would help solve this issue. I made an appointment for 9:00 a.m. yet made it to the location 20 minutes early checking in. Prior to this situation I had a pretty decent impression of this location for the last 3 years or so. I showed the gentleman at the counter upon arrival the printout of what needed to get done from the smog place and although I wasn't completely comfortable with the $100 inspection fee( that I guess is their policy) I agreed because up until this point ,I trusted this business. To my delight he understood the assignment, or at least, he gave me the impression he did and assured me they would get on it. From 8:40 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m. there was an "inspection" that took place but no work was done on the car at all. Mind you, I sat with four people in the waiting room. I arrived before everyone and different people were coming in and out getting their vehicle serviced. seemed to be finished before I was. There was definitely a lack of communication with updating me with what was going on... I was very confident the same professionalism I had seen in the past was something that was still present. I was wrong.... It was 1:00 p.m. when I was informed this entire time they were inspecting and admitted their attention was distributed between multiple vehicles. Personally I'm not against that. I understand realistically different customers have different needs. And some can be tended to faster than others. I was incredibly disappointed when I was called finally after more than 4 hours to find out absolutely nothing was done even when I specifically pointed out what I needed to get done. I thought I was helping them out with what I needed. Even if there was another variable they wanted for me to consider, It should not have taken four hours. I was even given a price for the labor and part upon arrival. I was very sure everything was established. Around 1:00 p.m. I was told some additional things needed to get done. And after 4 hours they were ready to get to it. At that point I insisted on paying their inspection fee and just left. When there's a lack of professionalism, that can't be fixed overnight. I'm not entirely sure what the hiring process looks like at this location. But I can tell by the other negative experiences many customers have had from different reviews it demonstrates my impression was right. There's a lack of professionalism at pep boys particularly the Downey California location. Pep boys in Downey California taught me a valuable lesson today. To never walk any of their buildings ever again. And do not allow anyone I care about either. Save yourself the trouble and avoid them and their inspection fee. I went to Pep Boys on June 3rd for a scheduled 12 PM diagnostic appointment specifically for my car's A/C system. What should have been a straightforward diagnostic ended up taking over two and a half hours, only for them to claim that my A/C condenser was "severely leaking" and quote me $900 for the repair. That price included an $800 labor charge, which I found to be excessive. Thankfully, I decided to get a second opinion. I purchased a brand-new condenser myself for $100, and a trusted family friend, who is a certified mechanic, offered to install it. During the inspection and installation process, no leaks were found--none. The condenser was never leaking, meaning Pep Boys either misdiagnosed the issue or intentionally tried to upsell an unnecessary and costly repair. This experience was a complete waste of my time and money and raised serious concerns about the honesty and reliability of their diagnostics. I urge others to seek a second opinion before agreeing to any expensive repairs here. What I experienced felt like a clear attempt to take advantage of a customer--something no business should ever do. Also if I could do zero stars I would be sadly you get one. read more

I had an issue with my car because it kept starting and stopping. I had to tow it here because this happened at 4pm on a Saturday and mostly all mechanics close at that time. So, l had them look at it and right away they told me it was my alternator and the price to fix it was $1062... that's right $1062!! So l said fix it. I sat down in the waiting area for almost 1.5 hours. Then, one of the mechanics came in and told me that the guy that works that area in cars wasn't gonna be in until Sunday. GREAT!! Why didn't they tell me that sooner??? So l left my car there and went back to work. I called them the next day and told them NOT to do the work. Too much. So I had it towed to my usual mechanic and the tow cost me $100 (which they should reimburse me for). They checked it and they told me it WASN'T my alternator.... my battery was fully charged!! Imagine that... NOT MY ALTERNATOR!!! It turned out to be a camshaft sensor. Forgot to mention, they charged me $15 dollars for a diagnostic exam when l went to pick up my car. Guess they were pissed because l didn't let them do $1062 worth of work THAT DIDN'T NEED TO BE DONE!! WASN'T MY ALTERNATOR!! My mechanic had the problem fixed in about 2 hours and only charged me $185!!! They saved me from overpaying for a service that didn't need to be done. Bottom line.... go to your own mechanic don't trust these big name places....I almost learned that the hard way.....if l could give negative stars, I would...stay away from there.... Pep Boys is not worth your time or money...seems they only care about lining their pockets with your money!!! read more

I came in to purchase a set of tires and alignment I was provided with an appointment. 6 hours later They mentioned that my cars service is complete as I was driving home the car was not properly aligned. My car would randomly jolt / pull to the right side. I brought the car back and they mentioned that their staff failed to follow through with basic procedures and did not calibrate it . 30 min later after waiting the staff mentioned that they did not have time as it was close to closing. I brought the car the following day and received a call from the facility stating that my cars had issues with the suspension and if that was not taken care of at their facility that they find the car not save to be driven and I would need to tow my car out of their shop. Made an 8am appointment, arrived on time, told them I would wait. 3 hours into it I get a phone call that my vehicle was ready. Go to pay, then im told it'll be 2 more minutes. I went to Pep boys after receiving a promotional email on buying a new battery. I stood in line for about 30 mins, understandable nowadays a lot of places are understaffed. I finally got helped, I told the rep I needed a new battery and wanted to use the 20% off I received via email. He proceeded to tell me "oh that can't be true, we wouldn't offer a 20% off batteries" I then proceeded to show him the email and even at that he wouldn't honor the discount. I became a little upset and told the rep that was false advertising. He began to tell me "You can use the coupon code only it if you add installation service" No thank you nowhere in that email did it say I have to add installation service!!! Ps. They said 1 hour, I told them okay, because I had an appt. 90 mins later ...I saw my car outside was in a different place about 90 mins after I came in. So I thought it was complete- went to the front desk and they hadn't even started it yet and it would be another 90 mins. I didn't have time to wait...so I told them I need to leave..on the way out they were sarcastic telling me "have a nice day" ...maybe a sorry would have been better. Pep Boys didn't bother to call me yesterday (12/19/18) like they said they would when the new steering wheel that we had to order came in. This after an employee was trying too hard to multitask at the register and dropped the original steering wheel, scuffing it up to the point where it was permanently damaged (it wouldn't simply rub off). I'm a fan of their online discounts, online ordering, return policy, and rewards program. But more often than not I do not understand the lack of communication and customer skills at this particular location in regards to other "tires, parts, and auto services" stores nearby. After our car was inspected they said it needed an alignment. Our car sat for over 3 hours and they didn't even do the alignment.
