This restaurant has been here for so long, but I've also haven't been here in so long. I feel like I've only been here 1 or 2 other times, but it seems to have evolved over time. The main reason I say this is because they didn't originally have an AYCE Mongolian BBQ option as far as I can remember, but it seems to be a popular option. I remembered Peony Palace not really being a standout option, and so wasn't very motivated to come back, but now I can't wait for the next time I get to come back. The staff member at the bar greeted us when we came in and he was very friendly throughout our time here. We came here with family and we ordered 6 dishes to share among 4 people. I would say portions are overall pretty generous. Things we ordered: - Salt baked string beans: Came with green beans, jalapenos, garlic, onions. This was more so fried than baked. It was almost like getting string bean fries. This was delicious, although I can see myself getting tired of eating it after a while. - Sweet and sour pork: I don't typically like sweet and sour sauce that is so red, but I got past it and it was delicious. Tasted almost like McDonald's sweet and sour sauce. The pork was fried. - Cashew chicken: I was surprised that I liked this so much. There was a brown sauce (aka "house sauce") with chicken pieces. The vegetables that were included were zucchini, carrots, celery, bamboo slices. The vegetables were ample and cashews were also a nice touch. - BBQ pork fried rice: had a good amount of BBQ pork, good flavor (enough char and seasoning). I really enjoyed this. Most Chinese restaurants tend to under season their fried rice. - Eggplant with garlic sauce: We paid the extra $1 to get it deep fried in batter and it was really good. Totally worth the extra $1. The sauce was really good, and felt like more than just garlic. Something we also noticed with the AYCE Mongolian BBQ was that people were using gloves to touch the tongs as they were building their bowls, which is very impressive for the sanitary aspect. Peony Palace has been a regular spot for some tasty Chinese cuisine. I've been here many times and always had a good experience. Located in a shopping plaza so there's ample parking. It is well maintained and clean inside. Good size dining area inside with outside patio seating as well. There is a bar with a good selection of your choice of libation. On this visit, I ordered a late lunch around 3:30pm and there was no crowd otherwise this spot is typically busy with lots of patrons during peak times. Plenty of dishes to select on the menu. For this visit, just ordered a combo dinner B ($21) for to go, which is served with: Mongolian beef Chicken chow mein Bbq pork fried rice Egg roll Egg flower soup The meal was delicious as usual!!! I've heard this place has been around for a while, but it's a family owned business. Been here a few times for All You Can Eat Mongolian or just order off the menu. Tons of options and variety for everyone. I like the Mongolian because there's a ton of meats, veggies, and sauces to choose from and you can keep going back for more. Regular menu food is also great and delicious. We ordered the deluxe dinner which came with so much food! And it was all really tasty. My highlight was probably the sesame chicken and the chow mein. They have a nice lunch menu for either $15.95 or $16.96 - HUGE PORTIONS!!! Each plate we ordered was screaming flavor. MSG perhaps? It didn't bother us for every bite was delightful. This place used to be the spot for me back in middle and high school, so coming back as an adult definitely felt nostalgic. I really hope it continues to thrive -- I've heard they've been around for over 20 years, which is impressive! On this visit, I went with the Mongolian BBQ. One of the most fun parts is the concept: you pay a set price and get to fill your bowl to the absolute max before handing it off to the chef to cook on the big round griddle. I loaded mine up with beef and lamb, and it turned out delicious. I also love that it comes with your choice of soup, plus rice, an egg roll, and wonton chips. For around $20, you're getting a meal that could easily stretch into two or even three servings. That's a steal, especially considering the interactive experience. Never a bad time at this establishment. I have tried a good portion of the menu and have yet have had a complaint about anything. The House Fried Rice and Beef chow mien are two of my favs when it comes to staple accompanying sides. My absolute go to has got to be the General Chicken, the sauce this dish is cooked is amazing!! I added beef, chicken, broccoli, yellow onions, and green onions in my bowl. Overall, 7/10. It came with fried rice 4/10. Vegetable egg roll 5/10. It costed $20 which is very pricy for what it is. I've been to Peony Palace multiple times, including the day before this visit. On my previous visit, I ordered two to-go bowls from the Mongolian BBQ section--one bowl with protein and one bowl with vegetables--and there was no issue. In fact, an employee commented that I hadn't taken very much food. When I returned the next day and tried to do the same thing, I was told I could only use one bowl because using two bowls would "mess up the burn" on the grill. I explained that I was getting my food to go and was not planning to come back for additional servings. I even offered to pay twice if necessary because I wasn't trying to get around the all-you-can-eat policy. Instead of working with me or offering a reasonable solution, the employee argued with me. Rather than continue the disagreement, I left both bowls and walked out without ordering. Afterward, I called to express my disappointment as a regular customer. I explained that they were likely losing a customer over the situation. The response I received was, "That's on you." The most frustrating part was the inconsistency. What was perfectly acceptable the day before suddenly became a problem, and there was no effort to accommodate a paying customer or even have a respectful conversation about it. I ordered my food 20 minutes before closing and arrived after they had closed. The lady that helped me was so kind and was very patient with me. She noticed I had a baby with me and told me next time if I call she would bring the food out to me instead of me taking my baby out the car. The service was 5 stars for me and the lady insisted that she carry the food to the car for me. I ordered the Deluxe Dinner and it did not disappoint at all. Peony palace is a neighborhood friendly restaurant. They have a lot of regulars that frequent the restaurant. I went on a Wednesday night and sat at a booth near the back . I had braised chicken and fried rice, my son had the Mongolian bbq. Everything was fresh and hot. My son stood and watched the guy cooking his Mongolian bbq on the big round grill in the middle of the restaurant - which was fun for him. Service was good, food was good and they give you nice size portions. Some people complain that the employees aren't that nice - they can be a little stand offish at times, but if you go there often you get used to it and they are for the most part very nice. A quaint little restaurant that has been unassuming off the corner of Franklin & Whitelock (which was originally Poppy Ridge). Has your typical Chinese food but also a Mongolian (build your own) setup. But the review will only be for their Chinese food. After entering (on their left door), you'll be greeted by usually who is tending the bar (yep a local "watering hole" too). Their menu has a wide selection of choices based upon if you want meat, seafood, or vegetarian. There are your typical favorites available and House specials. My favorites: is the Peony Beef but you you want pork the do the Peking style spareribs, either one is fried then glazed over with a sweet sauce. But the best bang for your buck is their dinner selections (for 2) since you get appetizers, soup, rice, chow mein, and two different dishes based upon which dinner you choose choose from: Canton, Mandarin or Deluxe). If there are more than 4 people then just order an extra dish separately and not from within the dinner selections add-on, so you get something you really want. This evening we added the Fried tofu with mixed veggies. Along with my wife's go-to the Canton Dinner (pictured) with Broccoli beef and Sweet Sour chicken (sauce on the side). We've almost tried everything on the menu and haven't had a bad meal here...it's comfort food when I don't want to cook at home. I've always been an advocate for supporting local businesses, but unfortunately, this will not be one of them for me. I never got the chance to try the food because the experience started off on the wrong foot. There was a sign that clearly stated, "Please wait to be seated," so I followed the instructions. However, instead of being greeted or acknowledged, I was met with looks from the staff that made it seem like I should have known to seat myself. To make matters worse, other guests who arrived after me were greeted and assisted right away. First impressions matter, and this was one of the worst welcomes I've experienced at a restaurant. Since this place came highly recommended, I expected a much higher level of customer service and hospitality. Based on this experience alone, I chose to leave without dining and will not be returning. I understand that restaurants can get busy, but acknowledging guests and making them feel welcome is a basic part of customer service. We heard about this place through some friends when we were in the Elk Grove area. We had to check it out because we love Mongolian barbecue. This place was good. My husband went and got two rounds of the noodles. He noticed that the ingredients were fully stocked, the food was made quickly and fresh to order. He said it was delicious. My mother-in-law got the sweet-and-sour pork and I got the lemon chicken. Everything was so good. We ended up having to get boxes because the portions were very big. I was able to enjoy this the next day. Our server was kind, kept checking in on us and cracked a few jokes which we appreciated. Inside was clean and they have a really cute sign that you can't miss. The rice was different than traditional fried rice I get at other restaurants. The soup was delicious. We ordered a dinner plate with garlic chili chicken. The service was 10/10. I'm looking for a Mongolian barbecue in Elk Grove. Peony Palace showed up in my research. I have never noticed that Peony Palace has Mongolian BBQ before, but I want to try it. I don't want to drive to Sacramento, and I don't like the other Mongolian BBQ restaurants in Elk Grove. When I walked into the dining room, it was nice and clean, with a traditional classical-style dining room. I like it! The Mongolian BBQ iron is next to the dining area, where the chef is present. I like my feeling of the restaurant. The meats and veggies are very fresh in the buffet line. One more thing I love is they don't water down the sauces. A nice casual restaurant in a mall I never knew existed near Franklin High. My guest and I both chose the Mongolian BBQ for lunch and it was very pleasant. The bowls are smaller than I'm accustomed so it's advisable to press down on the bowl of ingredients (gloves are provided) in order to compensate for the ingredients shrinking during grilling. The ingredients were good enough but seemed to be lacking in flavorful add-ons such as green onions, red onions (white onions were provided) bean sprouts, and red pepper flakes. The egg roll provided was fine but a little doughy on the inside. Peony Palace has been the best Mongolian BBQ I've ever tried so far in the Sacramento area! They have every topping you could want, pretty good meat selection, and perfect noodles. The location is great, parking is easy and seating is never an issue. The only hiccups I experience would be occasionally with the customer service. My husband and I were seated right away and given a menu. There are a few options. On one side, you have the option for Ayce Mongolian bbq and the other side, you can order Chinese lunch plates. So there are options! We got the ayce bbq which came with fried rice, soup, eggrolls and wonton wraps. The fried rice was meh. Basic and just an add on. We got one bowl of sweet and sour and egg corn soup. Both soups were a little sour and not as warm as I would like. The options they had for Mongolian were pretty decent. They had lots of sauces. Just Gotta make sure to add the right mixture lol the meat was a little tough, but was still edible. Overall, the experience was good and I would come back. Tried this place after a friend recommended her neighborhood Mongolian BBQ spot. The place is clean and service is really friendly. The egg drop corn soup was sooo good! I scraped my bowl. I was a little disappointed that there were no bean sprouts available at the time I made my bowl. Also, the veggies are cut pretty large and thick. I always add my sauces and mix my perfect blend. But here, the cook, adds sauces. You aren't asked what you want or if you want more...it just happens. What is chosen and how much I have no clue because I was never asked and there was a different blend for myself and my husbands bowl. I found that odd. Also, there is a whole entire bowl of water used during the cooking process so that waters down the sauces quite a bit. I've seen a splash or a few cups of water used at other places but here it seemed a bit much. I'd come back, but only for the egg drop corn soup. Yummy! read more

I unfortunately had to change my review after our recent visit. This was our go to place for Chinese food for many years. We hadn't been back in a while and we're craving Chinese. We placed an order for take out. In total it came to about $65. Everything was terrible. The soup wontons were gummy and disintegrating in the broth and the meat looked questionable. The pot stickers were under cooked and gummy with zero flavor. The chicken and vegetables were bland and the sauce just made it all worse. The rice was not fully cooked and was tough to chew. Unfortunately, it all ended up in the trash. What a waste. Not sure if they changed ownership or what happened. Definitely not the same. read more

We came in almost an hour towards closing time. The server was real rushy. We sat near the Mongolian bbq station. We ordered foil chicken which was dry and rubbery very disappointing. The food we had was good. But sitting there watching them clean with dirty rags and watching them use the sink water for the bbq was pretty bad. The restrooms were not very clean. And near the bathroom and the janitors area was the bowls they used for the Mongolian barbecue. My friends told me about this place but for me it's just not clean and sanitary enough for me.
