I was originally going next door to the bridal shop when I spotted Penzeys. They don't have brick and mortar locations back home. However, I'm familiar with their social media ads. I'm a big fan of that so when I saw this location I knew I had to pop in. I bought roughly 8-10 spices for myself. And then I saw the gift sets so I went back and got one for my friend. The staff were helpful and fun. I could spend hours in this store! Highly recommend whether you cook or not. They have some seasonings to add to frozen pizza, popcorn, and even sandwiches. It's Fall Y'all and that means baking season in my house! I had to come and stock up on some of my favorite baking spices. You can place your order online for pickup or shipped to your door as well. I love that you can go inside the store now and browse to see all the new spices available. I love the layout of the store and how clean it is. The employees are super nice and helpful. They have empty bottles available for purchase as well as gift boxes of pre made or you can choose your own spices. I love getting a variety of spices to try from my favorite spice shop in Beaverton or keep some on hand for gifts or spices to go inside my gift baskets. It's a great store to get all your spice fix. They have a great assortment of spices for almost everything you can think of. I liked that they have them in multiple sizes as you can buy a small portion to see if you would want more of it later. I love this spice shop! The pricing is no more expensive than getting spices in a grocery store; yet, the difference is the quality. Their quality is exceptional, so fresh. There are Penney's Spices located all over Portland and the surrounding areas, but I prefer this location. It's smaller, so easier to navigate, but absolutely has everything one would need. Now that they are across the street from their previous location next to Trader Joe's, and over by TJ Maxx, the parking is plentiful. The warm exotic aroma hits you when you walk in! The store is clean and well organized. You can buy empty bottles to fill, bottles already full of spices and make your own gift assortments. Cardamon,, cinnamon, coriander- so many varieties and we are just at the "Cs!" Since I do a lot of cooking, and lately a fair amount of baking, my cabinet has a pretty extensive variety of spices, many specific to certain cuisines. Penzeys always has what I am seeking and their spices are fresh and high quality. As everyone knows, that 2oz container of cloves from the 90s isn't going to cut it! This is a great place to purchase your everyday spices, those hard to find spices that make a dish, or buy gifts for that friend of yours who loves to cook. Penzeys Spices recently moved from their location near Beaverton Trader Joe's to the shopping center across the street where TJMaxx and Asian Food Market are located. The lady at Penzys said Trader Joes had bought out their lease because they plan to expand. This is good news for fans of the cramped Beaverton Trader Joe's. Its also good news for fans of Penzys too. The parking is much better at the new location and the store is even a tiny bit larger. Penzys Spices carries good quality spices in several sizes. They offer single spices and combinations. They also sell accessories like jars. The lady working here today greeted me and was very pleasant. The store is well organized and neat. I wish Penzeys had a store in Bend! I have to order online, but the products are great. My husband is a cinnamon connoisseur, and this place has a wide selection of varieties. Another of our favorites is a blend called Justice, which I use when roasting vegetables. The little sample bags are great for trying something new. Still tops in my book for spices and more. During these days of COVID there is no in-store shopping but you can call and place an order (usually if you have only one or two items) but it's preferred that you submit an order online. Many times you can pick up the same day if what you want is in the store. Otherwise, they call to let you know your order is ready for pickup, usually within 24 hours. I had a lot of items so it took a little longer. After you are informed your order is ready, you drive to the store and park out front. There are tables set up right outside the door with bags with customer's names on them. You just pick yours up and go. An employee is watching through the window and I just waved and mouthed "thank you" and was on my way. I miss the days of shopping in-store. I'd pick up a hand basket at the door and stroll through all the displays of spices and herbs, smelling everything as I went along. I usually have a list of what I need but often I'd come across something unusual or something I didn't know I needed. Impulse buying at its best! The employees are very knowledgeable and friendly and always ready to answer questions or make recommendations. Most of the time Penzeys runs promotions where if you buy a certain $$$ you get free jars of spices. And they are spices you can really use, not old stuff they are trying to get rid of. Penzey's Spices has a large footprint, almost completely covered in individual spices, with some curated collections scattered about. Spices are sold in three sizes: small glass jar, medium glass jar, and large baggie (to refill the glass jars). My go-to test for spice-sellers is bebere, a staple of Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine, made from a mix of chili peppers, garlic, ginger, basil, fenugreek, and korarima, rue, nigella, and ajwain or radhuni. Some bebere are primarily spicy, others convey a more subtle bouquet. Penzey's offering is right in the middle of that range, which I like. Beautiful, open space that is inviting and for a first time visit there was no trouble just browsing or looking for specific items. The store is nicely organized bu category such as spices, taco, baking, curry, seasonings and much more. It was awesome to smell the samples that are in silver lids and a description of how one could use the spice. Baskets for shopping located all around the store too. The check out kiosk is located in the center which makes it easy to access and great for interaction. Even a kids table section for drawing too. Employees were friendly and helpful too when needed. High quality spices with a friendly atmosphere. I have been getting spices from them for years and love everything. Spice jars are full to the brim and always fresh and flavorful. During COVID they switched to mail-order for a while or online orders with curbside pickup which I did several times. Sometimes it was a few days before my order was ready, but pretty much everything went crazy for a bit and I'm not holding this against them. Now the store is open again for in-person shopping and we can once again browse the lovely displays and discover new favorite spice blends! My go-to blend is Northwoods - it's great on chicken, fish, or pasta with a bit of butter and parmesan. They often have specials on the website so it's well worth checking out even if you are not local to a store location. Shipped items are packaged well. I also appreciate that they sell larger bags of the higher-usage spices (ground pepper, garlic powder, etc) so you can buy a bag to refill your glass jar and not have to replace the jar every time. read more

I bought a bunch of Penzy's spices for gifts for my family and nothing stood out as special about the products to justify the high pricing. I also learned that Penzy's has elevated toxins like lead and arsenic in their products (see link below). I was extremely disappointed in the customer service at the Beaverton store. I live about an hour away, and this was a special trip I had made specifically to shop at this location. When I arrived, I realized from the sign on the door that they are not allowing in-person shopping. I had not previously been on their website, so this is something I didn't know. I called the number that was listed on the window and asked if I could place an order for pick-up and I was very rudely told that if I could read the sign on the window, I would see that I needed to place an order online ahead of time. I was spoken to in a very belittling fashion, as if I was stupid for not having known that I needed to place my order online. With most other stores in the state being open for in-person shopping, I thought that this was not a fair expectation. I did not appreciate being spoken to like that, and made to feel like a nuisance. I don't know that I will be shopping here again. read more

It is unusual for me to give a five star review after only going once, Penzys Spices is just that good. After seeing this shop was reviewed by a fellow Yelper friend, I bookmarked it. Today I found myself in Beaverton. I have been in the market for white pepper, so I picked some up. I also grabbed almond extract, spicy seasoning salt and poppy seeds. You can smell everything before buying it. There must be over 100 spices represented here. There is a large gift section, I will be back for Christmas gifts. So I am being rung up by the friendly cashier, he notices me looking at the cinnamon by the register, and he rings it up as a comp. What clever marketing, if someone impulse buys the product, great, if not, send them home with a sample. I was rung up for about $15 total. I will be back. read more

Okay, we didn't get anything, but I had to give a rating after such a good experience. My wife wanted to check it out so we walked in and was surprised at the amount of spices they had. Everything was broken into sections, countries, states and style of cooking (BBQ, salads, sauté and such). They had a kids drawing table to keep the kids busy while we shopped around. Everyone was extremely friendly. Unfortunately, I'm not low on any spices, but I will definitely keep Penzeys in mind when I do. read more

I became a Penzey's customer via the internet nearly 15 years ago -- and didn't get to a brick and mortar store until early in 2003 on a trip to Cleveland. Since then, they have expanded their fleet of stores to almost every major city in the US -- and there's no question why this happened. Penzey's sells the freshest, purest, and greatest variety of flavors in the spice world. If you're still buying your spices and dried herbs at a grocery store -- you need to rethink your priorities. I carry 3 of their small jars in my purse at all times -- it's THAT good. When I moved to the Pacific NW, Penzey's was one of my first stops (since the people who packed my kitchen managed to lose ALL my spices (!) -- the result was one of the biggest purchases I've ever made for my kitchen. Real spices/seasonings are not cheap -- they are, after all, the REAL spice of life. Whether it's the heavenly cinnamon from Viet Nam -- so naturally sweet that it makes cinnamon toast without the need for added sugar; or the Galena Street seasoning blend that takes the most unassuming white fish filet from bland to blazing in nothing-flat -- every bottle and jar in the shop is a winner. I honestly have never bought anything from Penzey's that I didn't love and use. The people that work here in this shop were as aghast as I was at the thought of a spice-less kitchen in a new house, and walked me through the shop, helping replace my foodie-fodder. My must-have list includes the outrageously expensive blend called "Fox Point" -- and the modest but all important chipotle powder. Their chili con carne blend makes a fast and dirty pot of chili or chili-beans, and their Five Spice is the basis for all good stir-fries. Adobo seasoning is the cornerstone of good guacamole (use their recipe on the label for the best novice guac) and their flake kosher salt is perfect for the finish at the table. Really -- stop using the stuff in those jars you got as a wedding present 17 years ago. It's not the same. And Penzey's is the place to learn what food is supposed to taste like. Great shop.
