My experience with Pennybyrn has spanned 24 years between being an employee and a family member of a resident. From both sides, I can without a doubt share how amazing this community is. My Grandfather became their family and developed the best relationship with his caretakers. I never worried about the care he received, because it was always at the level where I would have cared for him. I expected the best, and he received it. When he passed, his entire household mourned along with me. They will still share an endearing or funny story from their time with him, and it really touches my heart to know their relationship was so strong. Pennybyrn has some of the lowest resident-to-caregiver ratios in retirement living, and this is designed to allow extra time to build relationships, give extra care, and support enjoyment of life and home. As an employee, I can share that this company will go to bat for its team and try to give the best of every penny and benefit possible. Pennybyrn is non-profit, meaning every dollar that comes in goes right back into resident care. When they give annual increases, free meals and amenities, and continue to keep benefit costs some of the lowest in the industry, they have strategically and thoughtfully given to their employees at great expense. Pennbyrn truly loves their team and will do whatever it takes to keep them happy! Please keep in mind that the other reviews listed here are subjective to each person's experience. Pennybyrn isn't perfect, but their mission and values are carried out in everything they do. You can come into the healthcare households right now and sing along to "My Girl" with a live band and dozens of residents singing and dancing along. I would highly recommend NOT sending someone you love to the rehabilitation facility. They did not give my mother the care we expected and hoped for. She was happy with her physical therapy in the hall and stairs for several days but then was isolated to her room for therapy. She had to stay in her room with the door shut. She went in with back issues, came out with COVID and passed a week later. They knew. Horrible place. read more

The Memory Care unit is more about warehousing than care. Not enough staff per patient care and some of the staff are not trained or prepared to work with dementia patients. I have been profoundly shocked by the way my father was treated. He is either parked in front of a TV (when the very sound of a TV is an assault to his brain) or left in his bed in his room. Found him there one evening lying at dinner time, laying in pee and poop. Who knows how long he had been like that? read more

Sadly, I would not recommend this place for rehabilitation. A few of the staff were good to work with. However, my family member, was continually having to do appeals with his insurance because this place, including his the social worker, kept telling them he was ready to go home when he couldn't even get up and down without assistance. I can't even wrap my mind around how poorly he was treated. The best thing there was the food. If you put a family member in this so called care facility, do not leave them unattended. All I can say is, I hope they do not treat their families like they treat patients. read more

Pennybyrn is all about looks not care...especially in the Assisted Living and Memory Care Units. IN those units they might have 1 LPN (in a building with over 100 patients) and the rest of the staff is a mix of Practical and just "clean up" staff. Pennybyrn really just seems to want the Independent Living customers that they charge a arm and a leg for. My mother has been there over 8 years and honestly while the grounds and facilities are super...the actual patient care has been constantly understaffed and not very good. The much less expensive home my mother-in-law is much smaller and doesn't look nearly as "swanky" with old buildings BUT they provide twice or better care of the patients and have their priorities correct. We constantly are trying to get Pennybyrn to communicate better, have better staff and improve communication with the responsible family members....to no avail. Now Pennybyrn is almost doubling their independent living but boy will all those people be disappointed when the day comes to move to a higher level of care. read more

Everything the marketing people say is true! Great place to live. Only problem imaginable is waiting too long to sign on...

Excellent absolute 5 star facility. My father was in here and he was treated with the upmost respect, dignity and care. Everyone here is extremely professional, considerate and especially kind. After having had extensive spinal surgery it was recommended that I go to a rehabilitation center for further help in the healing process. I was at Pennybyrn for a month where I received excellent therapy by an extremely caring staff of therapists. The staff in the living area went out of their way to help me recover. Everyone was cheerful, encouraging, and outgoing. The meals served in a warm, homelike atmosphere were delicious (especially the home-made soups/salads) and filling. I highly recommend to anyone needing rehabilitation services to look into being able to go to Pennybyrn at Maryfield. read more
