We got a ten piece bucket, slaw, biscuits, and fries. We got there right after opening at noon. The food took about 30 minutes, which almost pushed into our theater time. The Chicken was hot and crispy, the slaw was great. The biscuits were covered in honey and butter, but WAY too much honey. We gave Penny Red's a try for a late night dinner after a recent Friday night Tigers game and all agreed that it was the right choice. Located 'inside' the Brakeman, its just a short walk from Comerica, the DAC, and the Shinola Hotel. Penny Red's is straight-up take out, but you can "eat in" at the Brakeman or outside the Brakeman at the tables setup in the alley leading down to other spots, including the Shinola Hotel. If you like fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, biscuits, and fries, this spot will satiate your craving. I went with a big group and we ordered a bunch of things to share so we could try out several different menu items. The Food: We decided to go after the chicken sandwiches, so we tried 'The Classic' (w/ ranch, sweet pickles, and hot honey) and the 'K-Town Cutlet' (w/ toasted peanut, scallions, and kimchi BBQ). On both sandwiches the chicken was crispy and the batter/breading is seasoned well with some zing. On the Classic, the hot honey makes the sandwich stand out, but we all agreed the K-Town was the best...really great flavor combo. The homemade biscuits when "dunk'd" (they dunk the biscuit in honey to completely coat it in deliciousness) are spot-on and very addictive; but if you get them plain, be sure to get extra honey butter or they're a little dry. Their Sidewinder Fries are essentially thick cut steak fries with a spiral to them like a curly fry, just a lot shorter, and they are seasoned perfectly. Hot, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside; these are seriously some of the best fries around. On our visit, they had a popcorn chicken appetizer on special and those little bites of glory were incredibly addictive! We didn't try the brussels sprouts or the banana pudding, but I wished we had when the people at the table next to us were freaking out over both of them as we were about to leave. The Service: The place was absolutely slammed, so the guy at the window taking orders was definitely short on patience and hospitality, but I was very impressed with how fast the handful of dudes in the back were churning out orders. You can see it all happening at the order window, and they are hustling, making everything fresh. I was in the mood for everything and that's what I ordered: chicken, Brussels sprouts, potato salad, slaw, and biscuits. I also wanted to sample every sauce (except Ranch). When the order was ready, I carried the bounty to Brakeman's next door. What a great place to enjoy chicken and a beverage. The room was huge and was populated with both large picnic-styled tables and high tops. Sunlight spilled into the space from large "garage-door" styled windows. They were open on the day of the visit allowing a comfortable cross-breeze. The meal was delicious. The tender chicken was coated in a flavorful, spicy but not hot, crunchy coating. The sauces were excellent. I particularly enjoyed the one that tasted a bit like chili sauce, as well as the mustard-based hot/sweet sauce. All of the sides complemented the meal but I thought the Brussels sprouts were particularly good. I prefer creamy to vinegar-based cole slaw. I also had the biscuits, dry, which were flaky and buttery. After re-reading some Yelp reviews, I should have gone with them dipped in honey butter--next time. Service was wonderful. In my experience, the fancier the restaurant the worse its fried chicken will be. Penny Red's proves my theory correct. Penny Red's retro-chic design is inviting and fits in well with the cool vibe of Midtown. Given its location, a premium price is expected, but does the food live up to the hype? I did an online order to pick up after work. First of all, parking in Midtown is a nightmare and the Detroit parking enforcement officers have no mercy. I managed to get an empty spot specifically designated for Penny Red customers. There are only a few designated spots and if they are all taken you are out of luck and will need to find metered parking. I only had to wait several minutes for my food. I was disappointed with the fried chicken. It was some of the worst fried chicken I've had in a while. The chicken had a burnt taste due to it being dry and overseasoned. The seasoning on the skin was overwhelming. The skin is usually my favorite part of eating fried chicken and I could not eat it. The best part of the meal was the sides. I liked the sidewinder fries and the honey butter biscuits. I don't usually like sweetened food but I liked the biscuit dunked in honey butter. I am very hesitant to try Penny Red's again.
