Visited here for Valentine's Day Haunt. I didn't realize how big it was. They have like 4 different haunted houses for this event. They did a good job of trying to scare you with using fog or light that blinked a lot. I do feel like they could have done a better job with the haunting. Like there was one section where there was a tunnel and it was too foggy to see anything. There were a ton of mannequins you had to walk past. I think it would have been nice if they would have had some actual people in there so they could come back from behind and scare you. The haunt also featured palm readers and had a bar where they were also playing live music. There were some characters dressed up near the bar as well which was interesting. The staff was really friendly and took an ample amount of pictures for us. If you bought premium tickets, there was a separate line and they had access to a VIP bar as well (to be honest, it didn't seem worth it to me but I also wasn't drinking).

I have to say that we throughly enjoyed our time at pennhurst. I think some of the actors and even the robotics/animaltronics whatever you call them were amazing. I don't scare easily at all and one of them actually got me. I did not like the spin bridge thing I was dizzy but I get that the point. I don't like that you dint have a choice of which order to do the attractions in that you have to do them in order and there's nothing really in between like a bonfire or snacks, bathrooms were plentiful though. Also my favorite part of haunted places is always the hayride so I missed that but again everything that was there was really good. The asylum part itself was the best part. There was some sort of incident at the end and we were rushed out and it was hush hush so we didn't get snacks or shopping at the end but it's ok the kids got frosty's at Wendy's on the way home. I would recommend and do it again.

Listen, I do have to address some things. For those of you who have reviewed and were upset because there was no indoor plumbing there's also no indoor electricity...... the building is over 100 years old. I'm not really sure what people were expecting but if you wanted fancy indoor plumbing and a fancy building, you probably should not have gone to 100 year-old plus building that was abandoned for 30+ years.. I highly recommend you go places like the Hilton or the Marriott because you do not fit in to this place. And then for those of you who were upset because you had to walk outside.? Like that's wild enough. I'm not sure what you expected other than unpaved paths. I thought it was a really well organized and a very nice event. I took my two preteen kids and my husband and we had a great time. Our tour Guy Devon was absolutely amazing and the unit the security guy who came by everyone's wanted to check on everything and make sure everybody was safe and knowledgeable. If you go into this expecting to have a five star experience with top of the line amenities, you're really not going for the actual experience that you get. You don't understand why the building is there and the terrible history that happened at that building, you didn't go to learn about what happened to the people who used to have to be forced into those places, and nor did you go to respect those places or those people. This was a really well taught lesson in history of what happens when you allow hate to overrule common sense. I would go back and I would go back for Halloween, even if there was a line. And it was hot, but it's summer and if I'm upset about it being hot then it's only my fault. Because I know in August and July those are hot months I live on the East Coast. They were really patient with both of my kids and helping them learn about the equipment and showing them how to use the equipment so they could have a full-blown real experience of ghost hunting. I didn't think my kids were gonna be too thrilled about this, but it is something they are still talking about and very excited about. The history of the facility was pretty cool when they'd walk around during the daylight hours and let you know about how the building started why it started what was going on in certain places of the buildings. It's sad to see that. Some of the buildings are completely falling apart, and I wish that we could see more of the hospital before it had fallen apart, but it is an old building once again, and I stated before, I am just thought they have been able to preserve what they have so far. If I could give it more than five stars, I absolutely would. I am a mother of children who are on the special needs scale and I felt very connected to this place and my kids did as well.

Thanks to my sister from another Mr inviting me to join her for an outstanding spookily fantastic scream-arific evening. And by the by, those #grilledcheese offered at the end of the whole adventure? These sammiches are located in the food court with the merch before the exit, these were the bombdiggity. You MUST have these mouthwatering delectably and lovingly constructed sandwiches. You will not regret it. After the belly workout from the jump scares and throat wrenching calisthenics, you will be hungry. You have burned calories. You've earned that carb load. You NEED that carb load. Go. Get it. Order it with the tomato or plain. Or what'evs. Just treat yourself. And re-clog those arteries that Pennhurst Asylum has graciously piled their moist guts and hearts out for us to enjoy and clear out the plaque that was originally residing in the bod tubes you will be thankful are not laying (?) all over the asylum. Please do go out to Pennhurst Asylum, get the VIP on the special event night and....run!!!! Run for the fear and joy of it.

I got engaged here on Saturday and it was amazing! Thank you to all of the staff for making it so special and unforgettable! I come here every year (sometimes multiple times a year) and it's always my favorite

Everything I had hoped for and more. Pennhurst is a little bit difficult and confusing to find, and some of the signs that point to "parking" are misleading and lead you in a loop. GPS doesn't really guide you in an accurate direction. Eventually I found my way and I'm sure glad I did. It was a dreary, damp, rainy afternoon and the perfect day to tour such a facility. Our guide Chris was fantastic, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the real history of the facility. At its peak there were 4500 patients residing here. We started out going inside the building known as "Quaker" and it looked just as you night expect a decaying building to look. 150 men known as "bad boys" resided in this building with beds lined up in one big room. Chris explained that "bad boys" was really a misnomer, as they were really just misunderstood, as people did not understand disabilities the way that they do today. The architecture was spectacular. There was vegetation growing inside; dusty, dilapidated "squishy" furniture, and some graffiti. The rest of the tour was mainly outside, but ended at the museum, which is the only museum in the US devoted exclusively to disabilities. Some archival items are displayed here, some of them crumbling, some of them better preserved. Pennhurst opened its doors in 1908 and closed forever in 1987. Fortunately there are some folks who believe in historic preservation who now maintain the property. There is also a haunted attraction. We had another volunteer talk to us towards the end of our tour and he did his doctoral research here at Pennhurst. He found out that 70% of the actors and "haunters" as they call them, employed by the haunted attraction self-disclose as having a disability. While some of the historians felt negative towards the "haunters", they soon realized that they are indeed *not* exploiting the history of Pennhurst, but instead contributing towards the rich history of it. This institution was actually never called an "asylum", but that refers to the fictional experience of it all. That is kind of the "stage name" for the facility, if you will. The goal of this place was to educate and reform the patients (also sometimes referred to as inmates, since they were really unable to leave). While there is some dark history, not *all* of what they did here was bad. It was a really informative day. I learned about eugenics and some of the sad history surrounding such, but I also learned about the positive strides that are being made for people with disabilities. I've watched some of the ghost-hunting shows that have filmed here, but today I got a completely different perspective. It wasn't quite enough though, as I would love to come back and learn more.

This was an awesome experience - not just for the overnight haunted tours, but to learn about the history of the facility. The grounds are MASSIVE!!! If you're into the paranormal and history, this tour is a must! Although, I had minimal paranormal experiences it still was an enjoyable experience and I'd love to visit again! Hopefully the next time, it's less people because some people were just loud!

Wack!!!! I expected so much more from this place as I ride past a billboard ad for it every 5 mins it seems, and people I know personally have raved about their experiences here. Unfortunately I don't feel the same way... the lines sucked!! Please do yourself a favor and get the VIP tickets if you decide to come here, you'll save yourself a lot of time and will get out of the cold faster. The actors were boring and weren't scary at all. When going here I expected to feel like I was in a mental hospital and I didn't feel that way not once. Should've been actors outside scaring us, should've been actors on the roof acting like they were about to jump... like I wanted the most out of this experience and I can't say I received anything close to that. Very disappointed and won't be back! The hot chocolate was good though...

Our tour started almost 30 minutes late because the guide was waiting for a personal friend to arrive - and on top of that we hended up having a spark notes version of the tour because of an event happening later in the afternoon. Our questions were shot down and we were told we would cover that topic during a different section of the tour. That part never came. We missed several buildings and the buildings we did see we weren't permitted to view inside/certain floors. They tried to end the tour over an hour early, but as soon as we demanded a refund/reschedule opportunity they said we could go backtrack to a few different places that we had initially not been permitted to see. The guide started the tour full of energy and stories - she told us about court cases that lead to many current laws and legislations that have been passed. However, after she tried to end the tour early that same energy she had was lost. For the entire last hour of the tour we were brought to empty rooms and told very little history of the place. Instead she just spoke to a few individuals (which I'm assuming are the ones she knew personally). This experience was a wasted drive, and quite frankly wasted money. They prioritized a specialty event that was happening instead of focusing on each and every individual tour - who honestly had paid just as much to be here. We spent more time standing around and waiting than we did hearing about this places history.

It's well worth the value of tix (which are already cheap). Super scary houses, my 11 year old and her friend did them with my wife but we kept my 8-yr old out of them (a little too much for him, we did paintball instead!). They were definitely scared, my wife however said the workers did adjust their level of "scariness" after seeing younger kids as to not completely terrify them. The house has so many different elements and "zones", it isn't a quick walk through. Each room has a scary feature be it a person, or simulation. The last phase of the house is dedicated to clowns, and boy are they dedicated!!! The barn- oh my goodness! That was so fun, and scary! You're chased with a chainsaw, haunted by dolls, and the girl from the ring. Characters stay in character, and provide the right level of fright! Paintball hay ride (zombie).... absolute blast! My 8 yr old and I did this three times!! He had so much fun, we got tons of paintballs, they play music and zombies walk all around open fields, hide in spots etc. This was a great age appropriate event for the younger ones not able to do house or barn event. It wasn't terrifying, but more entertaining. Scary folks running around... they have folks running around w/ chainsaws, penny wise, and other current horror film characters just walking around. Lots of places for pics/selfies for the millennials. Big thanks to Missy (owner) and Maggie. They were super friendly to my family after they discovered how far we drove (specifically for paintball zombie ride). This is a family/friend affair and the staff does in fact make sure they don't "over-scare" little ones. We had a blast and will definitely be back. We drove two hours and spent nearly 3.5 hrs there. The scare actor pictured did a great job of keeping fun banter that made time passing more bearable, and this is a LINE INSIDE, after you have waited for a LINE OUTSIDE, and a Security Line. You then watch a safety video that another scare actor basically takes 5 minutes to tell you to be quiet and watch a 3 minute video. I completely understand the need to make the visitors aware for the staff and site's safety. There were some dicks in the visitors like there always are at Haunted Houses. Nothing the attraction can do about that. However, the glaring issue is: WAITING IN LINE FAR LONGER THAN THE 3 PREVIOUS YEARS As for the attraction, the setting is incredible, Eastern State Penitentiary is a fantastic historical site of a failed prison model, and the scare actor barkers/door people and wandering scare actors all were fun and creepy. The sites lends itself to spooky fun. The haunted houses are the usual mix of pneumatic pops and animatronics, with scare actors mixed in. We have our favorite attractions inside and they change them somewhat from year to year. You can opt for a 'scarier experience' by wearing a glow necklace where the actors can touch you and take you away from your group. My son has never wanted to, so we don't. I am not scared by haunted houses, i enjoy the production, the scare actors, and the atmosphere. I think professionally it is well done and fun. My background in theater and technical theater and my own father's Halloween Mania... unfortunately, 'i know how the sausage is made'. Don't let my inability to have a suspension of disbelief stop you, the scare actors really do a fantastic job. Another thing the site changed in recent years, an individual attraction is one time only visit, you used to be able to go as many times as you wanted to any individual attraction. Some things are cool enough you want to see them again. You're just gonna wait in a long series of lines before you can experience any of it.

This place is already fascinating because of its history and the atmosphere of the old penitentiary, but experiencing it during a Halloween event takes things to a whole new level. The setting alone makes this such a cool place to visit. There's something about exploring a historic prison after dark that creates the perfect atmosphere for a haunted attraction. Add in the Halloween decorations, incredible actors, and immersive experiences, and you have the recipe for a fantastic night! The event featured five well-themed haunted mazes, and we were thoroughly impressed. The haunt actors were incredible, bringing so much energy and commitment to their performances. We also loved the Touch Pass option, which lets guests opt for a more intense, hands-on experience. It's a great addition for those who want to take things up a notch and get even more immersed in the scares! There were tons of great photo opportunities throughout the grounds, so you'll definitely want to take your time exploring and grabbing some pictures. We appreciated the variety of food trucks available, too, which made it easy to grab something to eat while enjoying the event. The absolute highlight for us, though, was the Speakeasy experience inside Al Capone's cell! We paid a little extra for this experience, and we HIGHLY recommend doing the same if you visit. The singers and actors were phenomenal! One of my personal favourites was an amazingly talented woman who sang opera beautifully. Her voice was absolutely incredible, and it was such an unexpected highlight of the evening. I also loved the woman who performed a lovely rendition of Barracuda. Both performances really stood out and made the experience feel like so much more than just another Halloween attraction. You even get a complimentary drink included with the Speakeasy experience, and the beer was excellent! Between the live entertainment, the historical setting, and the overall atmosphere, it was absolutely worth paying the extra money. Overall, we had an amazing time at Eastern State Penitentiary's Halloween event. The combination of the historic location, fantastic haunted mazes, talented actors, Touch Pass option, photo opportunities, food trucks, and unique Speakeasy experience made for a memorable night. If you're visiting Philadelphia during Halloween season, we highly recommend checking this out! And seriously, don't skip the Speakeasy at Al Capone's cell. That experience alone was a major highlight for us! She had a room full of balls).  My friend sat down for a shave, where they covered his face in shaving cream.  We were also basted in the kitchen by the chef (the clothes start to get real messy here).  The sets were very intricate, and all of the actors were very committed to their roles.  We even encountered a woman giving birth (cool effect that the baby flew across the room which was followed by a shower of blood).  This was a wonderfully unique experience and well deserving of five stars! So this is by no means a bad review, however, there was just not enough actors to deliver scares. The sets were fantastic, using all the standard fare that all the great places use. That being said, again, just not enough actors within the haunt. We walked through several scenes without seeing an actor. For the price of the tickets (which are on par with much larger places like Penhurst Asylum and East State Penitentiary) Hotel of Horror just does not stack up with the big boys. Would we return? Probably not, for the money, would most likely return to one of the big boys!!!
