This sweet little place never disappoints. The star of the show is always the service. I have never left there without a smile on my face. The first time we were there the gentlemen who waited on us took us through a whole tasting journey and ciders were the best part. This time we had ciders and wines and the lady waiting on us even went in the back and concocted a non alcoholic beverage for my dad who was our designated driver and is also diabetic. It was just a seltzer and tangerine but my dad was blown away by how sweet a gesture it was and he loved the drink too. I just love the different cute gifts inside and the pureness of the place. This was our first stop of the day and we will definitely be back! David was so sweet, helpful, and talkative (not to mention very generous with samples)! The former schoolhouse was a hit with our group of three teachers! Is so adorable. I have seen the wine in some major retailers in metro Detroit so, to be honest, I didn't have the highest hopes for the quality. I was happily proven wrong! It was our favorite stop of the day- due to both the amazing customer service and the absolutely delicious ciders. We had so much fun we lost track of time and were late for our reservation up the road. The option to make your own 6 pack is like putting a kid in a candy store. We left with three 6 packs, 3 separate cans, two bottles of wine, and 2 prowlers of root beer. Most of this, however, would not have been purchased if David wasn't there. Loved the setting, was a beautiful day for getting out. Northern MI is well known for it's sweeter white wines and rose' and those did not disappoint but I did not care for the two reds I picked. I was disappointed by the level of service from the young man behind the counter. Part of the experience in wine tasting is having someone ask what you like, making recommendations-there was none of that. He was short and rude at times, did not seem to want to be there and when attempting conversation he seemed like he did not care about what I had to say. Since people are potentially going to be spending lots of $$ there on bottles or cases of wine, I would expect a better reception. We were actually planning on purchasing a bottle or two but changed our minds after our interactions inside. The older woman, Sarah, did come out and chat-she was awesome-great attitude, good customer service. I think perhaps the young man would be better off behind the scenes and not interacting directly with customers. read more

This was my favorite winery of our stops up the peninsula. I think it's super cute that it's located at an old school house & they have a lot of cute touches that highlight that too including some funny wine names. We came during covid but my parents have been before & their charcuterie board was served on a clipboard- so cool! We did a tasting during our visit. The tasting includes 4 samples in a very cool looking flight carrier. You can choose whatever wines or cider you want. Our server also let us try smaller samples before committing to getting it as a part of our flight. I enjoyed my wines here- my favorite was the cab franc merlot. We got a bottle - to note, you cannot drink the bottles at most wineries but you can get a glass of wine or cider to enjoy after the tasting. While visiting the Traverse City area, my wife and I took an afternoon drive up the peninsula. There are wineries all along M37. Knowing nothing about any of them, we picked a couple at random to visit, Peninsula Cellars being one of them. We loved it! Located in an old schoolhouse, the building maintains some neat history that the winery really dives into. The winery sells both wine and cider that it makes itself. We ordered a flight of wine, which was some of the best wine we had the whole trip! The cherry wines in particular were wonderful! The lone gentleman working the bar seemed a bit overwhelmed -- he did admit to me that it was busier than they typically see for a Tuesday afternoon -- but was very warm, friendly and helpful. For a unique experience and delicious wines, I would highly recommend Peninsula Cellars to anyone! read more

Oh BOY! Do I want to rave about this place! Peninsula Cellars was by FAR my favorite vineyard and tasting room that my boyfriend and I visited while we were in TC. The tasting room itself is set in an old schoolhouse and had so much character. The centralized bar area allows for multiple people to be served at each time and the individual that helped us (I don't remember his name) was SO knowledgeable about their choices. When you look at their menu, don't get overwhelmed! There are so many different wines to choose from so be sure to ask what your servers favorites are! We were able to get a really great description about the history and taste of each of the wines offered and were able to make educated choices because of this. Another plus here is that along with wine, they also offer cider samples! We loved the Cherry Jalapeño cider, it was so tasty. When I go to TC next, this will definitely be the first winery that I go back to! Pro-Tip: Make a reservation! The cab franc merlot was my favorite blend and even bought a bottle of it! The apple cinnamon cider was tasty (sampled the cherry habenero which was interesting, not too spicy) and ended up purchasing a glass of apple cinn cider which came in a cool mason jar. Extremely rude staff. They move you along like it's a production line. You can't stay inside, they kick you outside, no shade inside, Not allowed to open umbrellas outside for shade. Had to immediately pay for flight. If you want to buy a bottle it has to a separate transaction. We won't be back. I just ADORE this place so much! I have an obsession with old schoolhouses and this one did not leave me disappointed. The original one-room schoolhouse charm (complete with the original blackboards) was abundant while still being the perfect place for a tasting room. My husband and I each got a flight of 4 wines to try. I am more of a sweet wine lover and there were plenty of wines for me to choose from. The girl working the counter (I wish I could remember her name) was able to circle the sweet wines on the menu and offered recommendations to assist me in my decisions. The names of some of the wines were creative and fit perfectly with the schoolhouse theme. Those names included Detention, Homework, and Pop Quiz. All 3 were on the sweeter side and were SO GOOD. We drank our wine outside on a beautiful June day (this was also due in part to some of the Covid restrictions still in place). I cannot say enough good things about Peninsula Cellars - it is a must-stop if you are in Traverse City/Old Mission Peninsula! We will be back for sure! read more

My favorite winery on my tour of the TC peninsula! This was our last stop and our favorite. We were drawn in because we had teachers in our group that wanted to support the schoolhouse one. All of the staff here were super friendly and helpful. The prices for flights were great and there were so many options. We like that you could mix your flight selections between the wine and cider menus. The school theme with some of the wines was super fun. The outdoor seating was great because it allowed you to enjoy the view of the schoolhouse and the vineyard. We sat at a picnic table under a big shady tree and loved it! It was busy, but we had no trouble finding a spot to sit. Loved "Pop Quiz" so much I have to get a bottle to take home with me. My friends and I will definitely be returning when we return to TC. The staff were professional and the live music was a nice added touch. The view isn't as spectacular as some of the other vineyards in the area, but you can tell effort was put into the outdoor decor. My only critique is the lack of flavor profile with the cider. Came here without a reservation and got in just fine. Everyone was very friendly! One of my favorite things was the ambience and how that carries through into the wines. Not only is it a school house with original pieces in tact (I.e. slate chalkboard), but the wine names such as "detention" really put on a pleasant charm. They also shared that their wine called "exchange student" is a wine they source from other wineries and it roatates throughout the year - what an appropriate name. No fantastic view here but a quaint, local feel worth experiencing. They also had a homemade sangria (some type of apple flavor) which was definitely worth adding to my flight. My girlfriend and I visited four wineries on our trip up Old Mission Peninsula: Peninsula Cellars, Chateau Grand Traverse, Brys Estate and Two Lads. Peninsula Cellars was the most laid back. Chateau Grand Traverse had the best variety of wines. Brys Estate was our favorite tasting room and Two Lads had the best view. When we showed up to Peninsula Cellars in December, 2015, we only saw two other couples pop in during our visit. The employees were very friendly and helpful. They weren't pushy. One of the wines was served hot, which I liked. (At Chateau Grand Traverse, they served me a room temperature wine that was supposed to be served hot.) Peninsula Cellars also offers a tasty non-alcoholic root beer. As you work your way up the peninsula, you'll find fancier tasting rooms, but I liked how Peninsula Cellars wasn't pretentious. It kinda felt more like a bar than a winery. We walked away with two bottles: The 2014 Chardonnay and the Hot Rod Cherry Wine. My girlfriend doesn't normally like chardonnay, but we both agreed it was good. I didn't really care for any of the reds here. Indeed, finding a good red in Michigan is hard. read more

They are offering flights during this time and even though being the smallest place we visited didn't have any rules about reservations. REVIEWING THE WINE TASTING ONLY: To my personal preference Peninsula Cellars was the top of the list of tasting, within the Traverse City wine region. The service was attentive and although the tasting portion of the day was rapidly coming to an end, we were poured a 2007 Manigold Gewürztraminer, which just so happened to be on special. Buy one get one free is quite a deal in this area and with whites from other wineries being shallow to the nose and the palate, the Gewürztraminer was a true treat. The Old School Red and Detention (both $14.99/bottle) were close to the best reds of the day at a great price, so I bagged a few of those bottles. Sweet berry, but far from immature and young, both wines versitile enough to pair with most any dish-just no fresh water fish in my opinion and is splendid with pizza-Seriously! We were served a Kroupa Orchards Apple wine at the very end and I think it summed up the wonderful options at Peninsula Cellars: Inventive, bold, daring and well balanced! read more

Very cute tasting room right off the main road up the peninsula. It's in an old school house, and they have photos and items from the old school displayed around. The wines all have clever 'school' names to them. It's a cute winery to try. There are so many options to choose from, it was hard to just do 1 tasting of 5 samples ($5). As a note, everything borders on sweet, even their dry options. The staff were all very friendly, and gave recommendations on where to stop next and where to get food on the peninsula. This was stop number two on a bachelorette party wine tour. This, by far, is the most unique winery I have ever been to. The building is an old school house so everything is school themed. There are chalkboards and school decor everywhere. It is beyond adorable. I got a tasting and enjoyed every wine. My favorite was their white wine blend, Old School. It was sweet but not too sweet. There are dozens of wineries in the Traverse City area, each offering their own signature wines, grown in the local vineyards. Peninsula Cellars is a member of WOMP (Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula); a trail of 9 wineries, each with their own character. This is one of the smaller wine tasting locations, their vineyard is elsewhere, but coolest ones as well. They converted an old one-room school house into this tasting room.
