In October 2024, my wife and I spent a week at the Penha Longa Resort in Sintra, Portugal. I'll start off by saying this was the BEST resort/hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. The location, service, cleanliness and overall hospitality was top-notch in every aspect of the phrase. The resort is nicely hidden off the beat and path. If you enjoy quiet, low-key environments, this is the hotel for you. It's far off the main road making it secluded and very private. The entire time I was there I did not hear any road noise, traffic, people or other noises of a typical city. This also means you'll need to rent a car to get around or depend on Ubers/Taxi. We primarily Uber'd everywhere. Expect to spend anywhere from 7 to 30 Euros (Lisbon), each way. The rooms were very clean and spacious. We had a nice balcony to walk out to with a small table and two chairs. It was great to spend time there in the morning and evening winding down with a fresh cup of coffee. Looking into the distance and seeing green trees and hills is a level of zen you usually can't find elsewhere. Our rooms were not only cleaned daily, but multiple times a day. This means we always had fresh towels and other amenities. Of course, if you prefer privacy, slap the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on your door handle and they'll gladly oblige. The dining was 5-Stars across the board. Every restaurant we visited on site had delicious, fresh food. We mostly ate out in the cities we visited, but the local cuisine on site did the trick for us on more than one occasion. A centrally located bar (with finger food) is near the main lobby. Great place to catch drinks and chat with friends, family or strangers! The star of the show was the people. The service I received here exceeded my expectations. They have the most friendly and helpful hospitality workers in the world. There wasn't a single time that I wasn't met with a smiling face and answers to my questions that were thorough. My interactions with the staff left me feeling that they truly care about me, my stay and my requests. Above & beyond in terms of customer service. This is a hard thing to find these days, but they've got it locked down. My overall impression is 5/5. I would absolutely recommend this resort to family & friends and hopefully will be able to make it back in the future. Thank you for a great stay!

Gorgeous resort, great location and great staff. My grown daughters and I stayed at Penha for a night on our way to Barcelona from the US. We arrived early after a long flight and a really nice drive along the coast to Cascais. The resort was easy to find. We were allowed to spend the day by the pool as we waited for our room. We ordered lunch and drinks by the pool and just relaxed. There are actually three pools which I didn't notice at first. The adult pool is gorgeous but the water was way too cold to enjoy. My daughter took a nice nap by the indoor pool. The resort offers sun care products which I found a huge plus. Our room was refreshing and comfortable and had a nice view. I wish we had time to fully explore the property as it is gorgeous and serene. We couldn't get reservations at our restaurant or choice so opted for room service which was perfect for our tires bodies and allowed us to order and share in an informal environment. The food was great. Perhaps the best we had in the four countries we traveled to. We did enjoy lunch in one of the property restaurants and then spent the day in Sintra - a quick Uber from the resort (easier than driving and parking). The staff were extremely helpful and held our belongings until our return and departure for our next stop. I would return a thousand times.

Foodie and traveler from New Jersey , USA . Top notch service . Big, beautiful rooms. Golf course was windy and amazing . Food wise , all the food was excellent . The restaurants were all amazing and the breakfast was good too. At Arola, the steak sandwich was epic. The dinner there , the tasting menu for 62 euro was good, although the main seafood meal was just OK. Throughout the restaurant, the chicken wings were awesome, the crab salad and shrimp at b lounge was great. Biggest surprise was the 10 euro kids pasta I had at Aqua .. best pasta I had in a long time

The Church of the Lady of Health Chapel is a beautiful place for a wedding. My family attended a wedding there last week and I would have to say it was amazing. Here is an article that provides more details than I can: https://www.heritagedaily.com/2014/04/lisbons-phoenix-penha-longa-monastery/102890 The choir sounded amazing, there's a big room upstairs for the reception and the grounds outside are perfect for the cocktail party after the ceremony.

Biggest plus of this hotel is its customer service. Second to none. Staff is excellent. Friendly and polite from the first minute. Always there when you need it, without getting on your nerves. We experienced quite a few unexpected very positive suprises in terms of customer attention. Absolute benchmark. In terms of location: A very beautiful resort, an oasis close to Lisboa. Rooms and overall ambiance comply expectations of a 5 star resort. Whether you like golf or not. Restaurants and all extras are expensive, above average even for a hotel of this category. Many rates don't include breakfast, make sure to include it or book upon arrival with discount, definitly worth it.

The windows opened out to the main street but with the double pane windows we could hear a little bit of the street sounds but it wasn't loud enough to keep us up at night. The beds were decently comfortable and the room was spacious. Basic toiletries were provided but there were no slippers or tissue. The shower and toilet pressure were decent. My one biggest complaint was that there was no counter space in the bathroom at all. Also, there were no extra outlets to plug in chargers, so we had to unplug the bedside lamps. Service What sets this hotel apart is the outstanding service. I would've given this hotel four stars max, but I'm giving an entire star just for the hotel staff. In particular, Andres and Elena were amazing. On our last day after we checked out, we asked Elena about Ginja liquor in chocolate cups. She told us to go on with our planned tour and she would find out for us. When we got back, we found out she had walked to the shop herself and I got us a sample to try and also a list of the prices for different sizes of the alcohol. We loved it and she actually walked us back to the shop to make the purchase. I am so glad she pointed us in the right direction because the ones we had tried at other shops were not nearly as good. I was really impressed by how far she went out of her way to help us, especially considering we had already checked out of the hotel. Location This hotel is in the perfect location. It is within a few minutes walking distance of the historical center and is across the street from the bus stop for the 434 and 435 buses to all of the main sites. There are small shops and restaurants nearby and the tourism center is just down the street. Right next-door is a small travel agency. The Quinta da Regaleira is about a 12 minute walk from the hotel. If you need a tuk tuk or taxi, staff at the hotel are more than happy to call one for you. Restaurant After reading the reviews we decided to try the hotel restaurant on our first night. We got the shrimp appetizer, apple and walnut salad, and shrimp and scallop risotto. The food was unbelievably delicious and the seafood was cooked perfectly. We liked the food so much that we came back on our third night. The food was still good but unfortunately not as good as the first night. It was a different cook in the kitchen that night. Breakfast was good but there were two issues. The first was that it was exactly the same and by the third day we were bored of the same food. This wouldn't be an issue if there was a greater variety. However, with only eggs, sausage and mushrooms to choose from, you're left eating the same food every day. The other problem was they kept running out of food. Breakfast is supposed to go until 10:30 but they would be out of some items by 9:45 or 10 o'clock.

There seems to be some renovation going on, and you can imagine how beautiful this place is once restored to full glory, though at this moment, it's not quite there yet. The room is simply furnished, very clean, with nice towel, and for the shower, water is surprisingly powerful, and hot water ready and fast. Staff is very friendly. There is no reception, just a little bell near the entrance. Somehow ringing the bell summons help faster than a genie. All the staff is very pleasant, speaks good English and follow through with what they promise. The breakfast spread is also nice. I really like how they provide Portuguese cheese and home made bread, both I rarely find back home. There are several types of jam, fresh orange juice and fresh fruit, besides the standard cold cuts, cereal, coffee and tea you expect from a standard hotel. Most delightful are the parrots. The cockatoo, especially. He would tap on the window with his beak, knock knock knock, knock knock knock, while you eat your breakfast. If you venture outside, he will follow you around like a dog. He loves being patted and scratched. Well, he just loves attention. If you turn to go he will tuck at your jacket gently. This little guy totally melts my heart, I so want to just hide him in my jacket and smuggle him home. So, why the mixed feeling? Well, the hotel is quite a bit out of the way. It's an uphill trek from either the train station or downtown. Not recommend if you don't have a car and drag along luggages. We had a car, but the road was rather hard to navigate in the beginning. If the hotel is more conveniently located, I'd totally give it a five star without hesitation. But now... oh well... a bonus one for the cute little cockatoo... Sorry, I never claim to be an unbiased reviewer... I am no Michelin.

This hotel-palace is so rich in history. At one point, the Manager (?), Diego, happened upon me and my wife wandering around "oohing and aahing" at things and he proceeded to adopt us for the next half hour and take us on the most informative, charming mini-tour of this meandering hotel. (We must have spent ten minutes just discussing an 1896 German piano that was in one of the larger rooms.) The list could go on, many of the things on the list not all that impressive on their own... When landed at our room there was a plate of pastries next to a decanter of port. The water pressure and bathtub were a thing to behold (though maybe not for really large people.) The view of the grounds from this corner room were amazing. Good lighting which was greatly missed in other hotels in this trip. I know many people poo-poo extravagant digs, saying that the point of traveling is not to stay in your hotel room but, rather, to experience the culture and country and see the sights... well, if austerity and simplicity is your thing, don't stay here. (But this is not a fully "modern" hotel with jacuzzi tub and electric drapes and recessed LED lighting everywhere... definitely not their thing.) For two days, the place was heavy with police/security as they were apparently preparing to host some potentiaries/VIPs. Between the languages being spoken, the police cars, the secret service ear wigs and exotic uniforms, I have to say it felt like you were walking out of a scene from a Mission Impossible movie. We went down to breakfast early one day and were nicely asked to wait a few minutes while dogs sniffed around and a couple of bg-wigs finished their meal. (OK, it would have been slightly irritating were it not for the fact that we were down there so early.)

Charlotte, who runs the hotel was outgoing, nice, informative, and a pleasure during our stay. Check-in was super easy and getting to the hotel was quick from Sintra Train Station. It was a short, perhaps 4 Euro ride. The hotel offers stunning views from many windows. Our room had a view of the Castle of the Moors, Pena Palace, and Quinta de Regaleira. I mean I was blown away. The rooms are gorgeous and we had the opportunity to stay in a large king bed bedroom that was spacious and super clean. The bed was super comfortable as was every other aspect of the hotel. There are other rooms to hang out in downstairs where we tried to catch a little bit of the World Cup. You can order drinks as well, but we just had a little introductory Port as we arrived. The breakfast is very tasty and well worth the cost. We found cheaper in town, but it was not nearly as good or filling. The fresh squeezed orange juice is wonderful and the French press coffee was heaven. Wifi worked well all through our stay and the water was hot. The shower was strong and the bathroom was clean. The hotel didn't need AC as all you need to do is open the windows and the fresh mountain air comes in and cools you down. The windows and high ceilings in our room were one of my favorite aspects of the hotel. I felt like royalty during my stay. We checked out a little early our last day and the hotel staff kept our luggage for us while we did some last day exploring. The staff is super friendly and they take care to make you feel welcome. Sintra was one of the highlights of our honeymoon and Casa Miradouro played a huge part in it. We felt wonderful every time we came back from exploring and could enjoy our down time. When I come back to Sintra I am going to stay here again as you should when you first visit. This is not a place to stay, but THE place to stay. Thanks again, Charlotte.
